Claire Foy Is Having a Moment

claire_foy_first-man-spiders-web

Claire Foy is everywhere these days. She’s promoting both First Man and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel, which has landed her on the covers of Vogue, Porter Magazine, and The Hollywood Reporter (my fave look).

-A Taffy Brodesser-Akner profile is always worth your time. In her latest, she interviews Melissa McCarthy while indoor skydiving.

-In an Instagram story, Ariana Grande says she’s taking a social media break following her split from Pete Davidson: “time to say bye bye again to the internet for jus a lil bit. it’s hard not to bump news n stuff that i’m not tryna see rn. it’s very sad and we’re all tryin very hard to keep goin.”

Lady Gaga‘s explanation of why she wore menswear-inspired look to the Elle Women in Film Awards last night is pretty damn powerful.

-Also at the Elle event, Shonda Rhimes revealed that she’s the highest paid showrunner in television — and that she allowed the press to under-report her deal with Netflix. “When Ryan [Murphy] made his amazing deal with Netflix, what did he do? He shouted his salary to the world and he did this gorgeous cover shoot and photo for The Hollywood Reporter and he deserved every minute of it. I applaud him. When I made a deal with Netflix, I let them interview my salary wrong in the press, and then I did as few interviews as possible and I put my head down and worked. In other words, I hid.”

-At her tribute to Sarah Paulson at the Elle event, Sandra Bullock revealed that her dad and her two dogs all died within the last few weeks.

-Twist! After Drake discussed feeling betrayed that Kanye West told Pusha T about his secret son, Pusha said he actually found out about it from Drake’s producer and BFF Noah “40” Shebib.

-Netflix announced that the next season of Orange Is the New Black will be its last.

-I really need to see this video of a little boy stroking Prince Harry’s beard today.

-It’s only Wednesday, but this definitely takes the cake for the weirdest headline of the week: A Riverdale actor denies conspiring with Courtney Love to murder Frances Bean‘s ex-husband.

-Blumhouse has never made a horror movie with a female director, so a reporter asked Jason Blum why. His response leaves a lot to be desired.

Busy Phillips‘ new book comes out this week and it sounds deliciously dishy. (I’m just going to pretend I didn’t read the part about Joshua Jackson being a mansplainer...)

-Speaking of Joshua Jackson, now that pot is legal in Canada everyone on my Twitter TL is sharing this clip of Jackson and Gord Downie getting high in One Week. I LOVED that movie!

-I’ve seen both of the movies that Nicole Kidman is getting Oscar buzz for (Boy Erased and Destroyer), but Destroyer is the one that’s stayed with me longest. The way she changes how she moves in the flashbacks with Sebastian Stan versus the present day storyline as a bitter cop is phenomenal.

Lady Gaga Is Engaged

-Everything’s coming up Lady Gaga. A Star Is Born is doing even better than everyone’s wild expectations, and she just confirmed her engagement to Hollywood agent and boyfriend of two years Christian Carino.

Gwyneth Paltrow talks about her wedding to Brad Falchuk in the inaugural issue of Glamour UK’s digital issue: “It’s different to be in your mid-forties; do it again and bring all your experience, your pain, your happiness, suffering – everything. It’s actually very heartening, I feel very optimistic!”

Ariana Grande has returned her $100k engagement ring to Pete Davidson because she “ended the engagement and felt it was the right thing to do.” (And also maybe because it was pear-shaped? Just sayin’.)

Hailey Baldwin gushes about fiance/maybe husband Justin Bieber in her new Harper’s Bazaar interview: “He is incredible. He crushes everything. Every song, every feature. It’s crazy to see what he does. I’m always blown away.”

-Whoa. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Chow Yun-fat has revealed he plans to donate his $714-million fortune to charity.

-In a new interview with Vogue, Chrissy Teigen talks about building her brand on social media, getting blocked by Trump, and reacting to pal Kanye West’s antics.

-Oh goodie. We’ve entered the phase where Louis C.K. wants us to feel sorry for him.

-Practical Magic turns 20 today and I love that movie so much. I wish it got the annual Halloween rewatch love that Hocus Pocus does.

-I like that Jon Hamm doesn’t shy away from penis jokes.

-This is a good deep dive into ABC’s decision-making process about rebooting Roseanne without its star.

Busy Phillips credits BFF Michelle Williams for saving her marriage. #FriendshipGoals

-The CW just released the poster for the 3-show DCTV crossover and it’s bananas. Everyone is body swapping? I usually hate multi-verse, parallel timelines crap but I dig this.

-Meanwhile, Legends of Tomorrow has bowed out of this year’s crossover, but the trailer for their new season looks bonkers in the best possible way. That show really came into its own last year.

Gina Rodriguez proves she’s an action star in the first trailer for Miss Bala.

Victoria Beckham Explains Why She Doesn’t Want a Spice Girls Reunion

Victoria Beckham covers Vogue Australia

Victoria Beckham looks amazing in the pages of Vogue Australia (though I’m not sold on the flesh-coloured bandeau). In the interview, she talks about why she doesn’t want to do a Spice Girls reunion (“I always wanted to do fashion, so I was lucky that music was never my main passion. For the other girls it was”) and why she left the group in the first place (“I remember sitting very near to the front [at an Elton John concert] and looking at him singing those songs he’d sung time after time, year after year, and his passion and his enjoyment was incredible, even after all that time. And a few nights later, I was on stage at Madison Square Garden with the Spice Girls and I thought: ‘It’s almost like a waste that I’m given this opportunity. I appreciate the time I’ve had with the girls, but I don’t have what Elton can have after all these years.’ There was nothing there, other than that my kids were in the audience and I wanted them to see Mummy doing the Spice Girls.”).

Bryan Singer is working hard to get ahead of an article that Esquire is about to publish an article that he says will ruin his career.

-This article about how Timothee Chalamet is the perfect movie star for 2018 (according to producers, agents and studio execs) is so, so weird.  There’s lots of talk about how he’s a soft “beta” and not a hard “alpha” like Leonardo DiCaprio by people who clearly forget that Leo was a teen heartthrob for decades (“He’s pretty fey,” says one veteran studio hand and Academy voter in his 60s. “He might be the next Anthony Perkins, rather than the next Leo”).  This part is especially gross: “Girls love him now because I don’t think they’re scared of him…You’re selling the new male. What does the new male movie star look like in a post #MeToo world, where you can’t get away with all the things the alpha guys used to crush it at?” What exactly were you trying to get away with before?!

-Speaking of articles that deal a lot about traditional movie star archetypes, Viggo Mortensen talks about how not becoming famous until he was in his 40s helped him avoid celebrity traps. I have mixed feelings about Green book — I liked it but it’s problematic — but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s part of the mix when Oscar talk comes around. (Also, I can’t believe he’s going to be 60 in 5 days!)

-I was genuinely surprised by Meghan Markle’s pregnancy announcement. I wonder how Princess Eugenie feels about the fact that they announced it to the family at her wedding?

-Twitter is fantasy casting a movie with Kerry Washington and Chris Evans, and Washington is into it because she’s no fool.

Jennifer Garner says an Alias reboot may be in the works. Despite my reboot fatigue, I don’t hate this idea.

-Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Scott Thomas have designed sweaters, with proceeds going to their fave charities.

Nicole Kidman has not one, but two movies that are generating Oscar buzz (Boy Erased and Destroyer) so she’ll be doing quite a bit of press in the next few months. Still, I’m surprised that she talked about Tom Cruise in a new interview while addressing #MeToo: “I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of [the marriage] at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up.”

-I really like Ariana Grande and I hope she’s doing ok after her split from Pete Davidson. At least it happened before the wedding.

-On a new podcast, Taran Killam got candid about the mood behind the scenes on SNL: “When Seth Meyers left the show, the dynamic changed quite a bit. He was the last person there who I witnessed really collaborate with Lorne, as opposed to just kind of do what Lorne says.”

Drake comes off really, really well when talking about his drama with Pusha T in Lebron James’ new HBO show The Shop.

Ansel Elgort is living two different lives in the Jonathan trailer.
