Elle Responds to FKA Twigs Cover Backlash

-Frankly, when I first saw this cover I was trying to figure out why they put FKA Twigs in that messy outfit instead of looking at the headlines surrounding her, but yeah, that Becky with the Good Hair joke is not great. Elle even published an article on their site from Melissa Harris-Perry about why it alarmed her.

-In an Instagram post, Lady Gaga says she and Taylor Kinney are soulmates who are just taking a break, and asked her fans to “please root us on.”

–Idris Elba dancing and singing in funny voices is making my insides goopy.

-I was interviewed by the Toronto Star and I praised Kim Kardashian. In print. Publicly. I don’t even know who I am anymore…

–Mila Kunis says she and Ashton Kutcher tried to just be f*** buddies but, like their crappy rom-coms suggest, that never works. “If we just paid attention to these movies [No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits], we should know that s—t like this does not work out in real life.”

–Laura Benanti‘s impression of Melania Trump on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was pretty damn perfect.

–Kevin Bacon on Comedy Bang Bang made me laugh a lot. (“In Kevintown, the main industry is fun!”)

-I really liked WB-TV’s use of Snapchat to preview some of their stars that will be at this weekend’s Comic Con.

-Speaking of Comic Con, Simon Pegg reveals all the disguises he’s used in the past to walk the floor.

-Did the Beyhive figure out some sort of advanced compression algorithm for superlong GIFs? Is there anything that fandom can’t do?!

-I just spent way too much time in this comment thread, reading about people’s celebrity encounters. The one about Tom Cruise serving kids cupcakes is great, as is the one with Topher Grace asking a girl if they once banged.

–Amandla Stenberg just joined the adaptation of Everything Everything — a book I loved. I really like this casting news!

-Speaking of great casting news, Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs just landed a role on Blackish.

–Miranda Kerr is engaged to Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel. Which she announced using Snapchat’s new bitmoji. Synergy, y’all!

-Twitter finally banned that conservative blogger who led the online abuse of Leslie Jones.

-Screw this article about how what happened to Jones is a symptom of fan entitlement. It was racism and sexism, full stop.

-This is unexpected. D&D is making a comeback (with celebrities at least). Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Drew Barrymore, Stephen Colbert, Mike Myers, Jon Favreau, and Aubrey Plaza all say they play it.

-Unreal’s producers are defending this week’s twist. I’m not buying it. This season is definitely wobbly — possibly because of behind-the-scenes drama.

-This is an interesting article from Vulture on how women’s pictures found a new home on TV, but it feels like they’re turning a blind eye to soaps.

–Kirsten Dunst is going to direct an adaptation of The Bell Jar, starring Dakota Fanning? Yes, please!

-Interesting: The Cut takes us inside Raya, the secret dating app for famous people.

-I need someone to explain Maria Bello’s pants to me. Do it like I’m a four-year-old (which is the age these must be designed for).

-Why would Jennifer Hudson do this?! She was just on Broadway, for crissakes!

-The only thing Democrats and Republicans agree on? The CW is a damn fine network.

–Ben Foster and Chris Pine are bank robbers in the Hell or High Water trailer.

 

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney Call Off Engagement

-It’s a bad week for Hollywood’s longtime couples (especially the ones who’ve been plagued by blind items). Yesterday was Josh and Diane, and today it’s Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney who have called it quits.

–Matt Damon and Julia Stiles responded to Lena Dunham’s critique of the Jason Bourne poster, politely telling her to PFO.

-Meanwhile, I really like this cover story on Matt Damon, mostly because they got other celebrities to talk about him instead of doing the usual profile thing. Tina Fey’s comment is the best. Clearly.

-Here’s a good look at what’s next for Taylor Swift, now that her “aw shucks, math sure is hard, y’all!” persona has been blown to bits.

-Even her ex-guitarist is coming after her on Twitter now.

-Meanwhile, a lawyer has weighed in on if Tay’s “character assassination” claim is legit.

-Ohhh…I really hope this photo means Scott Speedman is on Aisha‘s podcast soon. Even if it’s just him repeating the word “hey” for an hour.  No one heys like Speedman…

-Here’s a peek at Anna Kendrick’s book cover. This feels like a “Oh god, what do I do with my hands?!?” pose.

–Chris Pine showed off his Jeff Bridges impression and proved he’s the king of inflatable flip cup on The Tonight Show. (Weird sidenote: I tweeted about Chris this morning and it went crazy with RTs. Y’all like him, huh?)

-I really, really like this article on why you should go see Ghostbusters right now (because it matters).

-Meanwhile, celebs came out to support Leslie Jones after her Twitter harassment.

-Yikes. Tom Sizemore was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

–Norman Reedus‘ latest prank on Andrew Lincoln makes him downright giddy.

Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger Are Officially Over

-In news that shouldn’t surprise you if  you’ve been paying attention for the last eight months or so, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson have split after 10 years together. Do you think this happened last year and they’re just burying the news under today’s Tay/Kim smokescreen?  In any case, she’s commemorated the announcement with a Jimi Hendrix quote. Um, kay. #TeamPacey

-Speaking of Tay/Kim, have you had time to digest all the madness from last night? What a glorious gift from the gossip gods to be dropped in our laps at the end of a week that was a mess of real-word news! Before we get into it, we need to give props to Kim Kardashian (as much as that may hurt our souls). I’ve never seen Twitter cape for her like they did last night, and deservedly so. She not only dragged Taylor Swift across multiple platforms (Twitter, TV, Snapchat), but she also had time to make fun of Taylor’s Slytherin rep and make and sell a Kimoji to commemorate the occasion! I mean, this was a genius, perfectly executed takedown, folks. It wasn’t a set up (Kanye reportedly has a doc crew with him at all times in the studio) and he sounded courteous and respectful during that call. But Taylor came out looking BAD. Yes, yes, her defense is that she didn’t specifically hear the “bitch” lyric and the Snapchat video supports that — but she’s clearly had time to craft a comeback (as indicated by the “search” at the top of the Note she posted) and this is the best she could do?! Weak sauce. Her reps’ initial statement about the phone call was that she “cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message”. Even if we didn’t hear the whole call, did you get the sense that’s where that convo was going? Uh, no. Not to mention her two most damning quotes from the call:  “I’d never expect you to tell me about a line in your song” and “You gotta tell the story the way that it happened to you and how you experienced it…You didn’t know who I was before that, that’s fine.”  Even if she heard the full song later and changed her opinion (which is her right), that doesn’t justify the self-righteousness of her Grammy speech. And you can’t make a speech like that, write a song about what happened at the VMAs, constantly reference it, and now ask to be “excluded from the narrative.” Gurl, you’ve been dining off that narrative like it’s your own personal buffet for YEARS. Look, whatever you think about the three people involved, they are all calculating, ruthless and ambitious. Except two of them are pretty unapologetically upfront about it, while the other one plays the victim. And people are OVER it.

-This is a good time to link to the article from The Ringer staff last week entitled “When Did You First Realize Taylor Swift Was Lying to You?” For someone who used to be a master at image manipulation, it’s amazing how many times she’s taken an L lately.

-Oh, and don’t even come at me about how Taylor vs Kim is anti-feminist and women should stick up for each other. Feminism = equal rights. Feminism ≠ watching someone mean girl you and simultaneously act victimized, and letting them get away with it.

–Idris Elba is set to break the record for being the highest grossing actor in a single year. We’re blessed.

-I really, really liked the new Ghostbusters movie. Kate McKinnon is a national treasure, and who knew Chris Hemsworth had such comedy chops.? This photo should have clued us in. In any case, despite its so-so debut, it’s almost certainly getting a sequel.

-Speaking of Ghostbusters, Leslie Jones has been RT’ing some of the racist tweets she’s been getting since the movie opened. It’s disgusting.

-Speaking of Hemsworth, he’s going to be in the next Star Trek movie. I’ll take him in pretty much anything at this point.

–Alden Ehrenreich has been cast to play a young Han Solo. Good. He was the only thing that made Beautiful Creatures somewhat watchable.

–Pippa Middleton is engaged. Not to Prince Harry, which ruins many fanfic dreams.

-I am weirdly excited about Freddie Stroma’s return on UnReal tonight. I am much less excited about that thing growing on his face.

–Drake shared a note that he wrote to his mom in 2006, apologizing for his eBay addiction. (He had a WireImage subscription? Was it to look up paparazzi images of Wheelchair Jimmy?!)

-Sorry, nerds (including myself in that, of course). The Game of Thrones premiere has been pushed to next summer, and the season has been shortened.

–Evan Rachel Wood is the latest celeb to defend Amber Heard.

–Emily Blunt tries to figure out the truth while going crazy in the new trailer for The Girl On The Train. Allison Janney is in this? YASS!

–Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and more assemble in the Magnificent Seven trailer.
