Awkwafina’s (Non)Apology

Awkwafina took to Twitter to address accusations of cultural appropriation — and a lot of people found her comments lacking. I can’t believe after years and years of being accused of using a “blaccent,” this is the best she could come up with. There’s nary a “sorry” in sight. And after getting a not-quite-glowing response to her post, she quit Twitter!

Thandiwe Newton is also feeling heat for giving a tearful interview in which she said “my light-skinness has been more problematic than being Black.”

-Meanwhile, The Rock has backed away from his support of Rogan.

-Also, it’s weird that Rogan was praising vaccines at the start of the pandemic, saying “there’s so many wackos out there that think that vaccines are a scam or they’re dangerous.” It’s almost like he realized saying outrageous, batshit things no matter what he personally believes makes him more money.

Leslie Jones says NBC, which owns the broadcast rights, has asked her to stop live-tweeting the Olympic Games, something she’s done for the past several Olympics. How are they not paying her big bucks to do this, let alone turning their noses up at the free publicity? She gets people excited about the games at a time where ratings continue to freefall.

Prince Andrew will give evidence under oath on March 10 as part of the civil rape case against him.

-As soon as that news came out, The Queen announced she wants Camilla to be dubbed Queen Consort ‘when the time comes.’ I’m sure the timing was a complete coincidence though.

-Meanwhile, have Prince Charles and Camilla been priming the British tabloids for this move?

-Is there a West Wing reboot in the works?

-Ohhhh, now I get it. The stars who keep gushing about NFTs are connected to CAA – which just so happens to be an investor in OpenSea, an NFT seller.

-Also, the backlash against Buzzfeed for revealing who’s behind the bored apes is bizarre.

Billie Eilish stopped her concert so a fan could get an inhaler. “Guys, give it some time. Don’t crowd…We’re taking care of our people, hold on. I wait for people to be ok until I keep going.”

-Did Zendaya and Tom Holland buy a house together?

Steven Soderbergh‘s Daily Beast interview is excellent. He talks about his biggest complaint with superhero movies (“Nobody’s fucking!”) and what he got wrong with his film Contagion (“What we thought would be a niche voice, or a single note within a chord — the Jude Law character — we had no idea that that would become the dominant chord. That that sort of attitude, and skepticism, would really turn into the primary issue. We stupidly didn’t imagine that people, when given the opportunity to not get sick, wouldn’t take it. It just didn’t occur to us, on a mass scale”).
