Barbie Came to Play

-CinemaCon happened today, offering looks at the upcoming summer movies, and the big focus was on Barbie. It sounds like it’s about dolls who are sucked into the real world and have an existential crisis. I’m already seated.

-Also, Ryan Gosling is clearly going to crush this press tour. Not only did he wear this today, but he told the crowd: “If I’m being really honest I doubted my Kenergy. I didn’t see it. But Margot [Robbie] and Greta [Gerwig] conjured this out of me. I was living my life and then one day I was bleaching my hair. Shaving my legs and wearing bespoke neon outfits.”

-In the Wonka footage that screened, Timothee Chalamet‘s chocolatier meets Hugh Grant — trapped in a tiny glass cage — one of the Oompa Loompas who eventually keep his factory running.

-CinemaCon also gave audiences a glimpse at the Dune 2 trailer, which should be hitting online soon.

Oprah Winfrey and Blitz Bazawule presented the first look at The Color Purple, starring Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., Halle Bailey and more. They’re positioning it as “Not Your Mama’s Color Purple,” which is…odd.

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney are leaning hard into the fact that their upcoming romcom has an R-rating, but modern audiences are complaining about it should be PG. Can’t relate.

-Speaking of Sweeney, she’s still engaged.

-Congrats to Daniel Radcliffe and Erin Darke, who welcomed their first kid.

King Charles tried to stop the Prince Harry from taking legal action against newspapers over their alleged phone-hacking, court papers claim.

-Police have issued a warrant for former Jackass star Bam Margera, who they say punched his brother in the face and threatened his father before fleeing into the woods in Pennsylvania.

Halsey has split from boyfriend Alev Aydin and is seeking full physical custody of their son.

-Is DeuxMoi really trying to take credit for the Succession reference to the rumour about Leonardo DiCaprio wearing headphones during sex? Girl, that rumour has been around since 2016. OG gossipheads know what’s up.

-Speaking of Succession, Kieran Culkin is submitting as Lead Drama Actor instead of Supporting Drama Actor for the Emmys. He’s going to have tough competition from costar Jeremy Strong, but this is the season to try. His mountaintop confrontation with Lukas in the last episode is some of the strongest work he’s done in the series.

Richard Armitage, star of Netflix’s Obsession, confirmed that he has a longterm male partner — though he wouldn’t consider this his coming out. “[It] happened when I was 19 – to anybody who mattered – and I was always waiting for that question to punch me in the face, and it never did. I thought, ‘Are people being polite, or is it that they don’t want to know?'”

-Netflix’s XO Kitty trailer sends Lara Jean’s little sister on her own quest for love in Korea.

-The trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 look good, but is it enough to overcome superhero fatigue?

-Speaking of movies that will test our limits of superhero fatigue, here’s the latest one for The Flash, which heavies up on Michael Keaton‘s Batman.
