Succession’s Bad Billionaires Are Back

the cast of succession on new york magazine's fall tv preview issue

-I’m going to share a lot of Vulture profiles today because there were so many good ones, but none better than Hunter Harris’ cover story, in which she went on location in Italy with the cast of Succession.

-All the boldfaced names in Italy this weekend for Dolce & Gabbana’s show made it clear that celebs and their stylists are back to being totally cool with D&G now despite their alleged racist, homophobic and fatphobic behaviour, especially if it involves a (free?) trip to Venice.

-Not only am I wondering what Jennifer Lopez was thinking by attending, but I’m also wondering why no one took the price tag off her cape?

-Also regrettable was her overdrawn top lip line. Billie Eilish has tried to make this a thing too, and I hate it.

-Rumour has it that a very rough cut of The Batman screened this weekend and the reaction was positive. It’s apparently horror-level dark, and Pattinson and Kravitz are great.

Patty Jenkins says the hybrid release of Wonder Woman 1984 was “detrimental” to the film’s success. I mean, it was also possibly because the film was…not good?

Emily VanCamp is leaving Fox’s The Resident after 4 seasons. Isn’t she the co-lead? There’s no official word why yet, but she’s back in the MCU — not to mention she and her husband, Revenge costar Josh Bowman, recently welcomed a baby girl.

-Manifest has been saved. Netflix is bringing back the cancelled show with a final, 20-episode season. Apparently NBC also made an offer, but Netflix’s had more episodes and a bigger budget.

Drake will release his next album this Friday (which he weirdly announced on Sports Center).

Kanye West‘s new album is out (after a bizarre listening party where he “married” Kim Kardashian and featured Marilyn Manson and DaBaby). He’s now claiming Universal released the album without his approval and that they blocked the DaBaby track.

-The album reviews are decidedly mixed.

John Cho talked to Vulture about getting superhero fit for Cowboy Bebop. “The biggest fear that I had was I was too old. I knew people were gonna have issues with my age. And I had to get over it.” Who has issues with his age?!? Point me at ’em!

-Is this why Tom Cruise was so yell-y on the Mission Impossible 7 set? Paramount sued its insurer today for refusing to cover the vast majority of its losses due to pandemic-related shutdowns on the film.

An IG account features crew members begging for more rest periods amid complaints that they are working dangerously long hours to meet streaming production schedules. I’ve been following this account for about a month now and the stories are horrific. Lowly PAs who have to pick up the food being expected pay the tip out of their own pocket, crew not being allowed meal or bathroom breaks, and department heads fudging crew’s hours so they don’t have to pay overtime.

-The first male to speak publicly with allegations against R. Kelly took the stand today, describing sexual abuse when he was just 17.

Nia DaCosta is the first Black woman filmmaker to open a movie at No. 1 at the domestic box office with Candyman. Good for her, but also how depressing that it took this long.

Halsey says she was turned down by some publications while promoting their new album while pregnant because “they didn’t want a maternity cover.”

-Meanwhile, I like this look back into how Halsey spent a lot of time on the internet during their teenage years — specifically Tumblr, and even more specifically, One Direction Tumblr.

Jon Stewart has something wrong with his face in the new teaser for his AppleTV series.

Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke are teaming up to play brothers in Apple TV’s Raymond and Ray.

-Speaking of new AppleTV duos, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson are reteaming for a romantic action-adventure film at Apple.

-Joe isn’t happy he has a son in the season 3 teaser for Netflix’s You. Meanwhile, Penn Badgley talked to Vulture about the new season and says he doesn’t want viewers to root for his character; he wants to push them toward a deeper consideration of You’s themes and the societal myths that allow men like Joe to get away with violence toward women.

-AMC has renewed Kevin Can F*ck Himself for a second season, a show that got much better as it went on.

-Last week’s episode of Ted Lasso was the best of the season so far. Brett Goldstein’s episodes always crush me.

-There’s a lot of speculation about which celebs are invited to the Met Gala, but it sounds like Addison Rae is in.

Camila Cabello is a good singer, so why is this clip of her singing in Cinderella so not good?

-Here’s the trailer for Jake Gyllenhaal’s The Guilty, which is making the festival rounds before hitting Netflix.

Jennifer Hudson Talks Playing Aretha

Law Roach is on fire right now. He styled pregnant Halsey’s Allure cover, as well as InStyle’s Jennifer Hudson one. In the interview, JHud talks about stepping into Aretha Franklin’s shoes for her new biopic Respect, and how her dogs predict success. “I got the dog Oscar before I won my Oscar for Dreamgirls. And then I said, ‘Oscar needs a wife. So how about I get a dog and name it Grammy, and maybe I’ll win a Grammy.’ And then I got the dog Grammy, and I won the Grammy.”

-In his new GQ profile, Jason Sudeikis says he still doesn’t know why Olivia Wilde left him after nine years together. “I’ll have a better understanding of why in a year, and an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it’ll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle.” He added, “That’s an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about. You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it.” He also confirmed they split “in November 2020” (so months after their rumoured split in March 2020, but before she was spotted holding hands with Harry Styles in January 2021).

-The Crown, Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, and the recently cancelled Lovecraft Country were some of the shows leading the Emmy nominations this morning. I’m glad that Ted Lasso scored 20 nods, including 6 for Supporting Actor/Actress (all but Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie), that The Boys snuck into Best Drama category, that Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You got some love, and that Jean Smart was nominated for both Hacks and Mare of Easttown. But it sucks that Girls5Eva didn’t make it into the Best Comedy section.

-I agree that these five nominees are among the top to root for. Roy Kent!

-Eyewitnesses claim that video of Justin Bieber appearing to yell at wife Hailey Bieber is misleading.

Britney Spears’ personal conservator Jodi Montgomery claims her dad, Jamie Spears, used $2 million of her funds for his defense.

Scarlett Johansson chatted with Seth Meyers about her pandemic wedding to Colin Jost. “Obviously we wanted to take all the precautions, every precaution that we could, so we had the masks [with ‘Jost 2020’ on them] made. It definitely was a weird party favor that could only happen now, but you just gotta go with it.”

Drake‘s girlfriend has been revealed to be 40-year-old model Johanna Leia, who he’s reportedly been dating for several months.

-Seems like Olivia Rodrigo is over that guy she wrote “Driver’s License” about; she’s dating Adam Faze.

-I always worry that Joshua Jackson is going to end up disappointing me, but not today! His Esquire interview is excellent, especially the part where he talks about having a home birth because “the American medical system has a horrendous track record with Black women.” The accompanying video is also great, including when they ask why he’s turned his Instagram into a stan account for his wife. “I think it’s important to celebrate women in media where they want to be, rather than the objects that we want them to be.” Gah! Perfection!!

-I liked this love letter to the bad girls of 90s teen dramas. Justice for Rayanne Graff, Kim Kelly and Jen Lindley!

-A video appears to show Mel Gibson saluting Donald Trump as he arrived at UFC 264 on Saturday evening. How is anyone at all surprised by this?

-Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet were all kinds of cute together at Cannes.

-For the same premiere, Owen Wilson (who I’m convinced will end up being the bad guy in this week’s Loki finale, because the person behind the TVA can’t just be some random dude, right?!) also looked great.

-Meanwhile, here’s a clip from the movie (Wes Anderson‘s The French Dispatch), featuring Chalamet having a bath in front of Frances McDormand.

-I’m very ready to watch Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino kick butt in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake this weekend, which is getting decent reviews.

-Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s conversion therapy documentary Pray Away, from producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, and directed by Kristine Stolakis.

-Disney/Pixar’s new movie Turning Red takes place in Toronto!

Halsey Announces Pregnancy

Halsey, who has been open about suffering multiple miscarriages over the years, has announced she’s expecting her first child with Alev Aydin.

-The first image of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in the upcoming film Spencer has landed. I was skeptical of her initial casting, but the resemblance is remarkable. And if anyone can play a person reluctant about their sudden fame, it’s her.

Kim Kardashian West reportedly has her divorce exit plan “ready to go.” A source tells Us Weekly: “Kim has had all of her and Kanye’s financials and properties ready to be split, it’s a very fair deal for everyone.”

-Movie theatres have had a rough go of it lately, but AMC just erased its 20220 pandemic losses — because of Reddit.  Basically, a subreddit has decided to take down hedge funds by inflating the stock of shorted companies like AMC, Gamestop, Bed Bath & Beyond, and a few others. This thread is probably the simplest explanation of what’s going on that I’ve see so far.

Christa B. Allen will be invited to the Revenge reunion after all now that organizers said they’ve changed platforms so now they no longer have a tech-based limit of four castmembers. Um, they know we all know how Zoom works at this point, right?

Dakota Johnson says she’s used George Clooney’s name to get dinner reservations. She eventually told him and he was cool with it.

Pamela Anderson secretly tied the knot with her bodyguard on Christmas Eve — 11 months after her nonlegal wedding to Jon Peters.

-Conservatives are big mad over Alyssa Milano being cast in a Nora Roberts adaptation.

-Netflix says it has a new most-watched series in Bridgerton: a record 82 million households around the world tuned in in its first 28 days, making it the streamer’s biggest series ever. I still side-eye all of Netflix’s “ratings” releases, but hopefully this will usher in a bunch of romance adaptations.

-The first images from Netflix’s Shadow and Bone adaptation are here and I’m excited. I don’t usually read fantasy but a friend recommended that series and I devoured it.

-Who in the world in Lindsay Lohan‘s camp is trying to suppress the first bit of good press she’s gotten in years?!

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci’s new film Supernova, in which they play a couple dealing with illness, is getting rave reviews.

-On the flip side, Netflix’s Malcolm & Marie, starring Zendaya and John David Washington, is not getting good reviews. “A screechy and solipsistic debate about identity politics that was made because Zendaya was bored during lockdown.”

-Top Gun: Maverick is still holding out for a summer release, which seems wildly optimistic.

Paul Bettany says Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon “really, really wanted” Vision to have a penis in his “birth” scene. “And everyone, [Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige] and [Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito], I mean everybody was like ‘I don’t know, Joss…I mean…I’m not sure…'”

Kate Moss and her daughter walked the runway together.

Cloris Leachman has passed away at 94.

-Sloan’s Chris Murphy has been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy.

-The Bold Type will end with an abbreviated fifth and final season this year.

Selena Gomez announced she’ll be releasing a whole EP in Spanish, Revelación, on March 12.

Gary Oldman and Armie Hammer star in the trailer for Crisis, Nicholas Jarecki’s Arbitrage follow-up. The timing of this is bad on so many levels.
