Charlize Theron on Fame and Finding Her Voice

Charlize-Theron-Harpers Bazaar

-In her Harper’s Bazaar cover storyCharlize Theron talked about an unnamed male director who told her to look more “fuckable” (“Having absolutely no control over what you’re wearing is a big one that really fucking annoyed me for years. Having some guy make you have a fitting almost in front of them—stuff like that, it’s really belittling”), getting Michael Bolton to perform at her friend’s surprise 40th bday party (“I said, ‘Listen, I know you’re probably going to say no, but would you mind singing a song at my friend’s birthday party?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah,’ and, oh my God, he was just so cool”), and her eclectic pop culture tastes (“I always say to my kids, ‘Just diversify a little bit,’ and my little one will go, ‘Are you watching the Housewives again?’ And I go, ‘Yes, I am. … We’ll watch a little Fellini later'”).

Kelly Ripa covers People and talks about everything from married sex (“The one part of our life that has always been very good”) to botox (“I’m not saying you should let people bully you into cosmetic procedures. These are my choices for me“) to Regis Philbin (“I understand that probably he didn’t want a cohost, but the network wanted me to be the cohost and I didn’t think I should pass up that opportunity. I don’t think it was fair to him. But it was also not fair to me. There were good and bad days. I thought I’d grown on him. I think I did”).

-Of course Johnny Depp is dating his lawyer. Of course he is.

Constance Wu says she faced sexual harassment and intimidation from a producer during Fresh Off the Boat.

-The pair of siblings who accused Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears of sexually abusing them as kids for the purposes of a comedy sketch dropped the lawsuit last week and said, “My family and I have known Tiffany Haddish for many years—and we now know that she would never harm me or my brother or help anyone else do anything that could harm us.” Haddish was then spotted by a TMZ cameraman and told him, “Oh, I lost everything. All my gigs, gone…I don’t have no job. I don’t have no job, bro.”

Khloé Kardashian was spotted taking sexy photos with 365 Days stars Michele Morroneat — but they’re not dating.

Rihanna is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 12 in Arizona.

-Don’t Worry Darling did decent box office, despite (or because of?) a new report of Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde getting into a “screaming match” on set. (How come so few are remembering similar things about the male director who’s infamous for this stuff and has a movie out in two weeks??)

-It looks like DWD’s box office was front-loaded and won’t have the staying power that The Woman King seems to.

-Meanwhile, the more I think about DWD (which I didn’t hate!) the more questions I have. What was that plane thing about? Or the frantic dancing on stage thing? And why did Wilde keep hyping the sex in the movie knowing the context?

Jennifer Garner, Victor Garber and Ron Rifkin had an Alias reunion in NYC.

Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin are trying to “figure things out” after reconciling.

-I’m very interested to see if January’s Golden Globes ceremony will be the star-studded affair it usually is.

Kiernan Shipka was spotted out to dinner with BJ Novak. They’re just friends, right? RIGHT?!?

-Apple TV+ has given a two-season, straight-to-series order for a show from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. He’ll reunite with Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn, who is in the lead.

-House of the Dragons’ obsession with brutal birth scenes is getting a little much. I think I’m giving up on this show. There’s too much other good stuff to watch and I don’t care about any characters beyond Matt Smith‘s. (The time jump didn’t help.)

-Rolling Stone invited a panel of actors, showrunners, and critics to vote on the 100 best TV shows of all time. I’d quibble about some of the order, but it’s a good list.

-Netflix hosted their Tudum event and released a slew of trailers, featurettes and announcements. On the TV side, we got news on Heartstopper’s season 2, a look at the new season of You (Joe’s a professor in London!), a trailer for Emily in Paris’s season 3, a sneak peek at Shadow & Bones’ season 2 (not nearly enough Crows footage), the final season trailer for Dead to Me, a trailer for the new series The Watcher, the trailer and announcement that The Crown will be back Nov 9, and a very cute video with some of the cast of Bridgerton.

-Speaking of Bridgerton, I didn’t think I’d want a prequel about Charlotte and George III’s romance, but wow, this 2-minute clip did a lot to win me over!

-On the movie front, Netflix released trailers for Jason Momoa’s SlumberlandGal Gadot and Jamie Dornan’s Heart of Stone, Millie Bobby Brown’s Enola Holmes 2, and Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother. We also got a clip from the new Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion.

M. Night Shyamalan is back with Knock at the Cabin, shot on 35mm film and using vintage lenses in order to have a classic ’90s thriller look, and starring Dave Bautista and Jonathan Groff.

-Here’s the first trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. People adore this video game but I think the show will be too bleak for me — but adding Melanie Lynskey and Fringe’s Anna Torv to the cast is tempting!
