Jessica Mulroney Gets Called Out

jessica mulroney dm

-We’ve got ourselves a homegrown scandal! Blogger/influencer Sasha Exeter called out Jessica Mulroney (wife of Ben Mulroney, BFF of Meghan Markle) over her white privilege and ‘threatening’ behavior yesterday in an Instagram video, saying: “One very prominent Canadian figure who used to be an acquaintance of mine named Jessica Mulroney took offense to a very generic call to action that I shared on my IG Stories. And what happened next was a series of very problematic behavior and antics that ultimately resulted in her sending me a threat in writing last Wednesday, June the 3rd.” She added that Mulroney reportedly threatened to speak with Exeter’s brand partners and interfere with her livelihood if she didn’t modify her BLM posts/tone. Exeter then posted a story that says “Here’s what happens when you call out someone with privilege and wealth. They publicly apologize on your post to preserve their image while privately threaten a lawsuit to try and shut you up” followed by a screenshot of a DM seemingly from Mulroney sent at 2:24am that says “Liable suit. Good luck.” [sic]

-Following an initial apology in the comments, this afternoon Mulroney posted a lengthy apology on Instagram. She does not mention her alleged legal threat.

-Meanwhile, CTV just announced that they are removing Mulroney‘s show about weddings from their schedule because her “recent conduct…conflicts with our commitment to diversity and equality.” Hudson’s Bay also announced she would no longer represent the company or Kleinfeld Canada as a fashion and bridal specialist. Good Morning America, where she often does style segments, has yet to comment.

-Daytime lifestyle show Cityline also issued a statement, saying: “Cityline fans – we want you to let you know that Jessica Mulroney will no longer be appearing as a guest expert on our show.”  Cityline’s host Tracy Moore, who’s friends with Mulroneycalled her out on IG for using “her extreme privilege to potentially bury a Black sister.”

-In other news, Kelly Clarkson has filed for divorce from her husband after 7 years of marriage.

-This Janelle Monae Variety cover is divine! She talks about her support for charities during the pandemic, the importance of showing an interracial queer couple on her season of Homecoming, and the need for white people to step up and support Black voices.

-Country band Lady Antebellum has changed their name to Lady A.

-Glee actor Samantha Ware explained why she chose to call out Lea Michele. “Does Lea even know what a microaggression is? I don’t know. All that her apology did was affirm that she hasn’t learned anything. Am I calling Lea a racist? No. Does Lea have racist tendencies? I think Lea suffers from a symptom of living in this world in an industry that is tailored to white people.”

-This is a very good piece on how the gatekeeping has to change in Hollywood. “I don’t and never will want my pain, Black pain, to be fetishized or consumed by white traumavores. I’ve been too patient for too long, and that patience has run out.”

This supercut of Sohla in the Bon Appetit test kitchen proving she has more skills and knowledge than her white colleagues (who were paid for their video appearances while she wasn’t) is devastating.

-Look, it’s not as bad as the “Imagine” video, but this clip of white actors speaking about BLM is still pretty cringe-y because they’re all ACTING. SO. MUCH. I guess they haven’t had an outlet for a while. At least this one was done by the NAACP and the link at the end is to donate to Color of Change, Bail Project and other charities.

-County health officials have approved film and television production to recommence this week, and every showrunner I follow on Twitter is like NOPE!

-Whenever TV does come back, don’t expect to see as many sex scenes, fight scenes, or extras.

Pete Davidson will appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, alongside Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, and John Cena.

Anna Kendrick remembers her time on the Twilight films as “cold and miserable,” saying “I just remember my Converse being completely soaked through and feeling like, ‘You know, this is a really great group of people and I’m sure that we would be friends at a different time, but I want to murder everyone.”

-Here’s the full trailer for Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the Netflix film starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams.

J.K. Rowling Continues to Destroy Her Legacy

-My god, why won’t J.K. Rowling just stop?!? She posted a 3000+ word essay on her website, defending her anti-trans comments, affirming her support for “single-sex spaces,” and invoking her own experience with sexual assault as if that explains her stance. It’s not only flawed, it’s dangerous and horrible.

-Between Rowling’s anti-trans comments, Johnny Depp being all Johnny Depp-y, and Ezra Miller appearing to choke a woman on video, the future of the Fantastic Beasts movies is precarious.

Lizzo posted a TikTok about working out: “I’ve been working out consistently for the last 5 years. And it may come as a surprise to some of y’all that I’m not working out to have your ideal body type. I’m working out to have MY ideal body type. And you know what type that is? None of your f*cking business…Health is not just determined by what you look like on the outside. Health is also what happens on the inside. And a lot of y’all need to do a f*cking cleanse for your insides.”

Anderson Cooper and his baby’s People cover is … odd. They both look Photoshopped or something.

-Speaking of babies, Iggy Azalea quietly became a mom when no one was watching.

-This is a really, really good article on how TV is sabotaging itself with its move towards fewer episodes and seasons to tell its stories. I don’t know if I long for 22-episode seasons anymore, but I do think that 8-10 episodes don’t always give the writers enough room to experiment and break out of the mold. And the big trend is to announce a “third and final season”, but most of my favourite episodes of television of all time happened in the later years (Buffy’s “The Body,” Breaking Bad’s “Ozymandias,” Mad Men’s “The Suitcase,” The Office’s “Dinner Party,” Lost’s “The Constant”).  I think a lot of this also has to do with movie people becoming TV creators without having any respect for TV. That’s how you get all the “it’s not a show, it’s an 8-hour-movie” bs.

-After 30 years on air, COPS has finally been cancelled. It shaped a lot of misconceptions about American policing, mainly that white cops were saviors and black people were criminals.

-A romantic comedy called The Broken Hearts Gallery (executive produced by Selena Gomez) will be one of the first wide releases of the summer, hitting theaters on July 10. It also looks like Christopher Nolan‘s Tenet is still on track for a July release. The idea of going to a movie theatre right now seems incomprehensible to me, especially for a 3+ hour film!

-My god, Bon Appétit is in total meltdown mode.

-All day today, white famous people are handing over their Instagram accountsto Black stars, writers, businesswomen and activists.  This should be a weekly thing.

-The Batwoman showrunner shot down rumours that they’re killing off Ruby Rose’s character, saying “I’m well aware of the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope and I have no interest in participating in it.” That’s why you can never trust articles based on audition scripts. Lots of actors (especially on CW shows) tell stories about how they auditioned to play a cop/love interest/mother and ended up playing a villain/nemesis/sister. Also, the fact that they’re not just recasting remains so strange. It’s only been one season, and all of the other character arcs are based on their relationship to that character. Having her go missing and a completely new person take up the costume seems unnecessarily complicated.

Spike Lee’s new Netflix movie Da 5 Bloods is getting raves.

Elizabeth Debicki, Donald Sutherland and Mick Jagger star in The Burnt Orange Heresy trailer.

Daniel Radcliffe Steps Up

-Following J.K. Rowling‘s tweets, Daniel Radcliffe spoke up to defend transgender women. This is very, very well done. He chose the Trevor Project as his platform instead of a media outlet, and he kept the attention on the issue instead of the person who made the comment. “If you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred” is such a good lesson for anyone who is disappointed by the creator of a work we adore.

-I find it really weird that Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas are now trolling the paparazzi, but ok.

-The Hollywood cleanout continues. MTV’s The Challenge just fired competitor Dee Nguyen (who was expected to return for the next season) over her Black Lives Matter comments. Even more shocking — at least according to my Twitter TL cause I don’t know who they are — Vanderpump Rules fired Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute because they once called the cops on their black castmate.

-Publications are cleaning house too. I very much agree with Mo Ryan’s take on how this isn’t “cancel culture.”

-No, Alia Shawkat! You were doing so well! The Arrested Development actress (and maybe girlfriend of Brad Pitt) is “deeply sorry” after an old interview resurfaced in which she used the N-word when quoting a Drake song. On the plus side, this might be the first apology to include art.

-Also, Woody Harrelson briefly trended because people thought this guy looked like him. Keep the faith; Woody is still awesome.

Brad Pitt was at a protest this weekendand it seems like the only reason he was recognized is by his super rare motorcycle.

Keke Palmer penned a column for Variety about the protests and the need for justice.

-Author Emily Giffin is realizing that she should probably keep Meghan Markle’s nameout of her mouth.

-Speaking of authors, Rachel Hollis just announced on Instagram that she’s splitting from her husband.

-I love this piece on how the simplicity of Christine and the Queens‘ “People, I’ve Been Sad” is a huge part of why it’s become the song of quarantine. That performance of it on Colbert gave me CHILLS.

-Another day, another story about Lea Michele being a monster. This one recounts the time she allegedly stormed out of a L’Oréal campaign shoot.

Katy Perry says that Harry Styles was “a complete gentleman” when she told him she was pregnant and offered to give up his airplane seat. He’s a good egg, that one.

-These reports that Batwoman is planning on killing off Ruby Rose’s character seem really sketchy to me. Auditions use fake sides all the time. Plus, no matter how acrimonious the split between the actor and the show was, I hope the CW recognizes the optics of killing off their first ever main lesbian character.

-The trailer for Bill & Ted Face the Music has arrived. It’s from the director of Galaxy Quest! God, we need this right now.
