Celebs Read Texts From Mom

-On Jimmy Kimmel last night celebrities read texts from their moms in honour of Mother’s Day — a cleaner, family-friendly version of mean tweets. I think I like this even better.

-Why yes, I WOULD like to watch the royal wedding’s live coverage with Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell.

-I really liked the Washington Post’s piece on Lainey and how celebrity news is met with contempt because it’s a feminized space.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Ellen DeGeneres went to dinner together and tried to stay under the radar — by going to the hottest spot in LA.

-God, I adore the fact that Jessica Chastain‘s lady spy movie, which she thought up after seeing all the lack of female-fronted films at last year’s Cannes, is now in the middle of a bidding war.

Bella Hadid and the Weeknd were spotted kissing in Cannes, so I guess they’re a thing again.

-I want to marry Cate Blanchett’s Cannes dress and have little dress babies with it. It’s that good.

-Wow, the outrage over Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s cancellation is intense. Last night the cop comedy was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter, going head-to-head with the biggest TV event in the world, Eurovision. A bunch of famous people tweeted about it, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sean Astin, Guillermo Del Toro, James Corden and Mark Hamill.  On the plus side, apparently producers are fielding multiple incoming calls to save the series. Among them: Hulu, NBC, and TBS. (Netflix has already passed.)

-UPDATE: in the wee hours of Friday night, NBC swooped in to save BB9! This makes a lot of sense; they own the show and creator Mike Schur has been good for them (he will now have 3 sitcoms on air at NBC next year). I think there’s going to be a point when we’ll have to examine how networks are increasingly allowing fans to feel like a show’s renewal is dependent on them doing all the heavy lifting on social media, but for today I’m just happy to see so much happiness on my timeline.

-Instead of sticking with BB9, Fox officially ordered revival of Tim Allen‘s cancelled sitcom Last Man Standing as network TV continues to make a big push for multicamera comedies (and Trump voter bait). Also, Allen’s narrative of why it was originally cancelled at ABC is a hella revisionist.

-Other shows that got canned today: Lucifer, The Exorcist, The Brave, Designated Survivor, Quantico, Taken andGreat News. And the CW is not going ahead with its Supernatural spinoff, which is surprising seeing as how well the original still does for them.

-On the plus side, Speechless and Fresh Off The Boat were saved, as was iZombie (thank god!). The CW also picked up the Roswell and Charmed reboots

-I’m from the east coast and I had no idea that ‘newfie’ was considered a derogatory term. Anthony Bourdain found out the hard way.

Sarah Drew live-tweeted her final Grey’s Anatomy episode and — yikes.

Donald Glover followed Billy Dee Williams‘ advice to “just be charming” when playing Lando.

-Yes, Donald Glover and Kanye West have a lot in common, but I really like this take on it. “The popular desire to appoint Glover as Kanye’s successor botches the lesson that fans might ideally learn from the latter artist’s fall from grace.”

-Speaking of good Donald Glover think pieces, I liked this article on what it’s like to watch him grapple with the relief and responsibility of black collectivity.

-Oh no. Scott Hutchison, the frontman of Scottish band Frightened Rabbit, has been found dead.

Ally Sheedy writes about her experiences with Hollywood sexism in this excerpt from a new collection of essays.

-The new season four Arrested Development edit seems as if it’s in direct response to its widespread poor reception. Even if it fixes everything, I still can’t sit through that again.

-All of the trailers for The Spy Who Dumped Meare really working for me. Mila Kunis‘s mid-career turn as the lead of raunchy lady comedies is pretty genius.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Canceled by Fox

brooklyn-nine-nine-canceled

-It’s killing season in TV land this week. Fox just canned Brooklyn Nine-Nine (nooo!!!), The Mick and Last Man on Earth — but weirdly, they have room for a dumb Tim Allen sitcom. They still haven’t announced the fate of Lethal Weapon (I’m still shook about how bad an actor’s behaviour must have been to get thrown off a show the network wanted to renew. Actors behaving badly is the norm, so it must have been REALLY bad).  Over on NBC, Law & Order: SVU, Blindspot and the Chicago shows will survive but there’s still no word on Timeless.

-I don’t know why Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt did a couples photo shoot, but I’m not complaining.

-This was such a good troll for Veronica Mars fans…

Amal Clooney was so worried her Met Gala dress would rip, she changed in the gift shop. Seems like a lot of work for a not-great dress.

-So we’re in full Georgina Chapman comeback mode, right? First Scarlett Johannson wears Marchesa to the Met gaga, and now Vogue is giving her a soft-focus profile.

-In response to the profile, Yashar Ali wrote a rebuttal for HuffPo: “I’ve spoken to over a dozen survivors of Weinstein’s sexual predation about Chapman and all of them surprisingly said they believed she was aware, in some form, of Weinstein’s behavior. Two of them told me that Weinstein made misogynistic remarks to them in front of Chapman and she did not react in any way.”

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller have split after nearly two years of dating.

-People keep trying to put Justin Theroux and Emma Stone together. I’m going to continue to cling to a blind item I read that said she had no interest in dating him. I’m CLINGING to it!

-Hey Sylvester Stallone, your racism is showing.

Jennifer Garner made a music video about being a mom for Ellen. I don’t get it.

-I liked this interview with Nick Offerman: “After Parks and Rec, the parts coming my way were overweight men in briefs, crying.”

Jennifer Lopez and Jimmy Fallon faced off in a fast dance dance off!

-In an interview with Lana Del Rey for Elle, Kendall Jenner says it was “weird” when her younger sister had a baby before her.

Chris Brown is being accused of hosting a party at his L.A. home where a woman claims she was repeatedly raped by two of his friends.

-Spotify has removed R. Kelly music from its playlists, citing new hate content and hateful conduct policy. Now Sony and RCA need to drop Kelly from its roster.

-Writers for the original Roseanne series say they’re struggling to reconcile the character they wrote with the reboot’s new, Trump-loving character who jokes that her Muslim neighbors’ pile of fertilizer in their yard means they’re making a bomb. “I don’t recognize that character.”

-I really, really don’t want Roseanne to attempt to do a #MeToo episode.

-I kind of love that Jessica Chastain is walking the walk. She’s producing and starring in 355, a female spy movie with Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Lupita N’yongo and Fan Bingbing.

-Watch Deadpool apologize to David Beckham for insulting his voice in the first movie.

-I love this: Patty Jenkins may earn nine times her Wonder Woman salary for the sequel, according to Variety.

-I guess I’m in the minority but I really enjoyed I Feel Pretty. Greta Gerwig did not.

-Watch John Cho‘s frantic hunt for his missing daughter in the first Searching trailer, also starring Debra Messing.

George Clooney Was Having “The Best Time Of His Life” At Met Gala

George Clooney apparently had some very drunk fun at the Met Gala afterparty. (FF to 1 min, 30 secs)

Letitia Wright was also having the best time.

Taylor Swift opened her Reputation tour by talking about being “bullied” by Kim Kardashian: “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on.” So that’s the way she wants to play it, huh?

Lea Michele‘s engagement posts have been a little over the top, but it’s still very cute that she asked Jonathan Groff to be her maid of honor.

-Holy Christ, how is Johnny Depp still getting roles? He allegedly attacks a crew member? He hires his friends for parts? He takes over the director’s job? This whole story is trash.

-Ooh boy. Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa posted a photo of her and her boyfriend Aundre Dean at the Kentucky Derby over the weekend. She promptly got a response from Dean’s wife, who is pregnant with their second child.

-Streaming numbers of Beyonce and Kanye West‘s albums on Jay Z‘s music platform Tidal have been manipulated, allowing the stars excessive royalty payouts, according to a new report. This follows a lot of blind items about Tidal that have popped up over the last couple of years.

Jada Pinkett Smith sat down with Will Smith’s ex-wife, Sheree Fletcher, for her new Facebook series. Jada recalled a time she was rude to Sheree: “Will Smith let me have it! His take was, ‘That is Trey’s mother, and that’s just not your place.'”

-This look at Hollywood paydays is insane. Sandra Bullock made at least $10 million for her voice role in Minions.  Robert Downey Jr got $10 million for his appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

-This is so effing savvy: Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson added a $1 million “social-media fee” to his multimillion-dollar movie salary. If the studio wants him to tweet about a movie, they gotta pay up.

-Despite strong reviews for Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff’s performances, Broadway’s revival of Children of a Lesser God has struggled to sell tickets and is closing early. Jackson’s IG post about it is predictably gracious and wonderful.

-Wow. Ryan Murphy is donating 100 percent of profits from his new FX show POSE towards trans and LGBTQ charitable organizations.

-Meanwhile, people are really angry that Murphy is eyeing a new series tentatively titled Consent, which would tackle Hollywood predators like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey.  Yes, I would prefer to see a woman lead this, but I’m not going to get too worked up over a hypothetical series. Call me when it gets a season pickup.

-Speaking of pickups, NBC just ordered new sitcoms produced by Mike Schur (Parks & Rec, The Good Place) and Amy Poehler. CBS picked up two comedies, and as well as Dick Wolf‘s FBI and the Murphy Brown revival. Interestingly for a network that has been traditionally super white, two of their new shows will have black leads (including one produced by Harry Styles).

Childish Gambino‘s record-breaking “This Is America” video hits 50 million views in mere days.

-Meanwhile, between his new video and his SNL episode, Donald Glover is basically winning May. I’m very interested to see how prickly he’ll be during the Solo press tour. I can’t take another New Yorker profile like this one.

-Also, he totally steals the show in this new Solo clip.

-I dig Nathan Fillion, but I follow him on Insta and this is not what his face looks like anymore.

-Rose McGowan is on the cover of THR, and she talks about how the press treats her. “If I was Reese Witherspoon, would I be treated like I am? The answer is no. But [the press] feels I’m fair game. I think it’s because [Weinstein] paid off the media for 20 years to savage me.”

Cate Blanchett is crushing it at Cannes so far. A reporter asked whether the #MeToo movement would change the industry and festival — and she prompted her male jury members to speak up first.

Terry Gilliam is having a terrible week. He’s still waiting to hear if his long-delayed film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote would finally be screened at Cannes this weekend or if it will be tied up in legal delays. And he just suffered a mini-stroke.

-Grimes is dating Elon Musk? Huh.

Armie Hammer apparently just found out about Iran-Contra Affair? I feel old.  (Also, I would watch this.)

Annette Bening in talks to join Captain Marvel which is great because she’s boss, but didn’t they already start filming in back in March? Adding castmembers to movies already in production freaks me out.

Jordan Peele’s next movie is called US, and Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss are in talks to star.  Just take my money already!

-This is a great piece on how superhero movies make publicists of us all.

-Oh no. Scott Hutchison, the lead singer of the band Frightened Rabbit, has been reported missing. I like them.

Gabrielle Union‘s excitement over rosé gummy bears in this interview makes me love her even more.

-This was one of my fave sequences on TV last year. The fact that Pamela Adlon planned the whole thing without her TV daughter knowing about it beforehand makes it even more awesome.

13 Reasons Why’s season 2 trailer is all about justice for Hannah. “I thought this whole thing was going to be over,” says Clay. So did I, kid.

Jeff Goldblum narrates the new Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer.
