Chris Pine Pops Up in Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later

-Here’s the Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later trailer. Holy crap on a stick, is that Chris Pine?!?

-Also, this bit about Chris Pine in the Charles Taylor interview is great: “I don’t know why he isn’t getting every leading role there is. He’s gorgeous, he’s charming, he’s got a great level-headed presence, and what he does in Wonder Woman is amazing. He is there to show her off. That is really the mark of someone who knows how to act in front of a camera: I am going to step back a bit and let my co-star shine.”

-Meanwhile, I took this Buzzfeed quiz where you create a BLT and discover your perfect Chris, and I got Chris Evans. I’m very ok with that.

-JFC… Bill Cosby wants to hold seminars on how to avoid sexual assault accusations. Don’t assault people. There, I’ve just written his whole script for him.

–Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler reunited for a “Really?!?” segment last night on the Late Show. Really.

-Also, Amy Poehler has a theory about Daniel Day Lewis’ retirement. It involves potato chips and misunderstandings.

-I had very little interest in seeing Rough Night, but the trailers for Girls Night have me psyched. Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and the cast are featured in an upcoming episode of Carpool Karaoke and the preview is great.

–Ron Howard has officially taken over for the Hans Solo movie. According to EW, Lord & Miller were leaning into the comedy and allowing the stars to improv (which is what one does when one hires actors like Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge), but writer and Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan wanted them to stick to the script. The kicker at the end of this article though…

-Also, who will get the finished film’s directing credit?  How will residuals be apportioned? Will Lord and Miller even be allowed to attend the premiere?  The directors guild is going have an interesting time figuring this one out.

–NASA is not impressed with GOOP’s $120 bio-frequency healing sticker packs.

–Alison Brie is doing some hard posing and smizing at the Glow premiere, but Dave Franco‘s presence makes it all better.

-It’s been a rough news week. Hey, here’s Justin Trudeau hugging an enthusiastic unicorn puppet for CBC Kids.

-The weirdest part about the Downton Abbey movie announcement is all the articles in which the cast seems surprised. “Well, tell my agent, because we’re still waiting to know.”

-Transformers: The Last Knight suffered a franchise-low opening day.

–Naomi Watts‘ new Netflix series Gypsy is not getting good reviews.  THR says “maybe watch episodes 1, 7 and 10. Skip the rest. You won’t miss much and you might enjoy it.”

–Taylor Swift put her music on streaming services and just made almost $400,000 in one week.

-HBO wants you to watch The Leftovers series finale so much, they put it up on YouTube for free. (I adored it, but if you didn’t watch the series you’ll be lost.)

–Alexis Bledel, who did the best work of her career in The Handmaids Tale, will return as a series regular in Season 2 (which has been extended to 13 episodes from 10). Which probably means no more new Gilmore Girls for quite some time…

-I’m kinda glad Jennifer Lopez is going back to her romantic comedy roots. That’s where I like her best (outside of Out of Sight, but that felt like a fluke).

-This is a great read about a Facebook group of tens of thousands of Brendan Fraser fans. Surprising, sweet fandom shit like this makes me weirdly happy.

–John Cho ponders death and romance in the Columbus trailer. Yes! John Cho in as the romantic lead in everything, please!

-Look at our girl Tatiana Maslany co-leading a movie alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. Look at her!!

Samira Wiley Got Married

-Congrats to OITNB’s Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli, who are officially married! (I’ve got nothing but love for any wedding outfit that includes a cape.)

–Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were looking very cosy with the fam this weekend.

-This article wondering why male critics are so baffled by Big Little Lies is asking all the right questions.

-Speaking of BLL, Shailene Woodley will have one year probation for her pipeline protest, but she still encourages people to take a stand.

–This photo made me feel really bad for Justin Bieber.

-And this video made me feel really bad for Selena Gomez.

-I assumed Aaron Sorkin‘s comments in which he appeared to be unaware of Hollywood’s diversity problem were sarcastic, but then I remembered this. And this. So yeah, he just sucks. It’s crazy that someone who writes the most self-aware characters has none of that self-awareness himself.

–Katey Sagal opened up about welcoming her ‘beautiful miracle’ Esme via surrogate when she was too old to carry a child.

-CHIPS may be a flop, but it’s the latest reminder that Michael Peña is a Hollywood unicorn that should be protected at all costs.

-Tired of police destroying evidence of your sexual assault? Tatiana Maslany introduces the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Utility Belt!

-Dammit, Fallon, Migos, The Roots, and classroom instruments might actually make me like “Bad and Boujee.” I resisted for so long!!

-One Direction’s Liam Payne is a dad now.

-It’s stupid that they didn’t release the full Red Nose Day Love Actually scene on iTunes in North America and raise a ton for charity. No one is waiting two months to watch it on NBC.

-Speaking of Red Nose Day, James Corden and Take That were very cute.

-I am very glad Bravo Canada has picked up The Handmaid’s Tale. Yay!

–Terrence Howard now says being abusive is not part of his history. Wait, we can do that??! In that case, I most certainly did not take belly-dancing for a year and end up at a recital wearing nothing but undergarments and a sheer skirt….

-Between David Milch joining True Detective’s third season, and Katie Cassidy returning to Arrow as a regular,  I literally don’t understand any of today’s TV announcements.

-The Justice League trailer is here, and it’s kind of a mess.

Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man universe won’t be connected to the MCU. But wasn’t he introduced in the last Captain America movie? Ugh, so confusing. At least the new trailer is cute.

 

No #SquadGoals Here; Critics Skewer Suicide Squad

-I happened to be on Twitter last when the Suicide Squad review embargo was lifted and oof! The critics are absolutely hating on it, so much so that dumb fanboys are now petitioning to have Rotten Tomatoes shut down — which is kind of like complaining that a newspaper prints too many crime stories. (This is why I now try to limit my tweets about superhero TV; DC fanboys are the WORST.) Meanwhile, THR’s deep dive into what went wrong with this movie is fascinating. Warner Bros execs were reportedly so blindsided and rattled by the critical response to Batman v. Superman that they even brought in the team who made the (admittedly great) first Suicide Squad trailer to help tweak the movie, which is…wow.

–Channing Tatum is set to star in Splash remake, playing the mermaid while Jillian Bell will play the character originally played by Tom Hanks. I love this news, especially since Tatum is never funnier than when he’s with Bell. Have you seen his Idiotsitter episode? If not, this clip should convince you to rectify that.

-Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey has apologized after pretending to come out. Wait, what?

–Bradley Cooper allowed James Corden to tase him. I really wish I had that opportunity after seeing All About Steve.

-Surprise! We’re getting a new Britney Spears album this month!

-Welp. This isn’t good news for the Cruel Intentions reboot starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. NBC is reportedly looking at “alternative platforms” to air it.

-Pro gun nuts ran Daisy Ridley off Instagram.

–Jonah Hill told Fallon a story about the time he accidentally emailed Drake his daily food journal (the point of said story is to let y’all know that he has Drake in his contacts).

-I cannot believe I forgot to record The Hills anniversary special when I was away.  Sounds like they showed lots of forth wall-breaking clips. (Spencer Pratt, who was not invited, still managed to add his commentary.)

-As if you didn’t already love the kids from Stranger Things, it turns out they’re all really good singers.

-Meanwhile, as good as Stranger Things is, this is a really great piece on how the show misses the mark with its female characters.

-I don’t know what makes me happier: that there are a bunch of videos floating around of the Arrow cast breaking into showtunes from Hamilton, or that in each one, the guy who plays Det. Lance seems really annoyed by it.

-Once again at the TCAs, HBO was somehow blindsided by questions on its shows defaulting to sexual violence against women. Sigh.

-Meanwhile at the TCAs, Archie Panjabi gracefully deflected questions about her messy exit from The Good Wife. Proper ’cause that wasn’t the place for those kinds of questions, but can she just go ahead and do a Vanity Fair tell-all interview already?

–Julia Stiles didn’t love riding a motorcycle with Matt Damon on the Bourne set.
