2017 Golden Globes Best and Worst Dressed

The theme of the 2017 Golden Globes’ red carpet seemed to be clavicles. There were so many weirdly similar plunging necklines that a lot of the dresses kind of started blending together. But there were still enough WTF? style moments to keep us awake throughout the inane red carpet banter. Nicole and I picked our best and worst looks:

BEST DRESSED:

Jen: There’s no question for me that Evan Rachel Woods’ custom tux by Altuzarra is the winner of the night by a long shot. I loved it on first sight, and then I loved it even more when she said she wore it as an homage to David Bowie and added, “I want to make sure that young girls and women know [dresses] aren’t a requirement and you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to; you can just be yourself because your worth is more than that.” Preach!

Nicole: I’m totally with you on this! She was just so cool and made it seem effortless.

Nicole: I loved Kerry Washington’s Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda. The fit was perfect, it was so flattering and a great colour! I also appreciated that Kerry wore lipstick which because it just pulled the whole look together.

Jen: You like this more than I did. I think the bodysuit peeking out from underneath makes me side-eye it a bit.

Jen: I love me a sleek column dress and Amy Adams did it best in this Tom Ford stunner. I adore the square neckline, which makes it just a little bit weird.

Nicole: I was a bit bored by this. It fit beautifully and agree the neckline was interesting but it still wasn’t enough to make a black sequined column dress a standout for me.

Nicole: I was pleased with Emma Stone’s Valentino gown for tonight and thought that it was simple and flattering and just youthful enough to come across as fun.

Jen: I kind of wish it was a bolder colour but I dig Emma’s dress too, especially because it fit so well with the character she’s nominated for (but wasn’t as on the nose as Natalie Portman’s Jackie-esque dress).

Jen: I can already feel Nicole yelling at me for this pick, but I weirdly kinda dig Drew Barrymore’s weirdass Monique Lhuillier birdlady dress. Not many people can pull off the Vegas boho look but she kills it. I wish her hair was less messy and she’d toned down the contouring makeup, but I’m still tickled by this look.

Nicole: Good lord. I actually hoped she’d fly away with those weird wings.

Nicole: I fell in love with Janelle Monae in Moonlight and tumbled a little deeper after seeing Hidden Figures. She is stunning in this custom Armani gown and manages to invoke a bit of the time period while still being thoroughly modern. Love!

Jen: This dress is so weird but in a good way. Between Moonlight, Hidden Figures and her red carpet game this season, she’s on a roll.

Jen: She was a late arrival but Brie Larson saved the best for last in this perfectly fitted red Rodarte. One of my faves of the night!

Nicole: Agreed! It was a stunner on sight and the red stood out amongst the sequins, yellows and golds.

Nicole: It pains me to choose Jessica Biel as a favourite (mostly because of her spouse) but her Elie Saab was so cool and crazy and flattering. It’s a clavicle dress but I just loved the tailoring and the embellishments.

Jen: I can’t believe you’re stanning this one. Not only for the clavicle (see below) but this thing has FAKE GRAPES glued to it!

Jen: Insecure’s Issa Rae killed it on her first red carpet in this absolutely breathtaking beaded Siriano. Great hair, too.

Nicole: I thought it was simple and beautiful.

Nicole: We both loved Viola Davis’s breathtaking Michael Kors Collection sequined gown that positively glowed. She was radiant and a unanimous pick.

Jen: Yeah, this was a such a great dress. Bold colour, perfect fit. I love that Viola is having such a moment right now!

WORST DRESSED:

Jen: How does a dress like Nicole Kidman’s McQueen happen to such a huge star? HOW?!? I want to rip off the sleeves and the hem and change the lining — just to start.

Nicole: What in the actual f*** was this mess? Another cold shoulder gone terribly wrong.

Nicole: I never really think of Natalie Portman as a star on the red carpet but this dress was just terrible from the colour to the fit. I understand not wanting to wear a super form fitting dress but this was a bedazzled Prada tent.

Jen: Hey guys, did you know Natalie plays Jackie Kennedy in the 60s? Did ya? Well, just in case you forgot, her dress is her to serve as a walking reminder.

Jen: I never really have high hopes for Carrie Underwood on a red carpet, but this was unusually bad, even for her. From the figure skating costume sheer back to the frilly front that kind of looks like a labia, this Iris Serban gown is all kinds of bad.

Nicole: Classic overdone Carrie.

Nicole: I always wish Michelle Williams would be more interesting on the red carpet and this year was no exception. I generally love the adverts she does for Louis Vuitton but this dress was blah, the choker was embarrassing and for the love of god, wear some colour on your face!

Jen: This was another dress that I wanted to rip the sleeves off of. And the chest was weirdly boob-flattening.

Jen: So many women were saddled with Louis Vuitton gowns that I didn’t like on this red carpet, but LV did Sophie Turner extra dirty with this mess of a dress.

Nicole: I get the desire to be different and youthful. This is not that.

Nicole: Let me preface this by saying I love me a cold shoulder. However, when executed as a gown, I feel like it doesn’t play well. Sarah Jessica Parker is a great example of this with her Vera Wang gown. It doesn’t work and I wish she’d just worn her Vera Wang wedding gown instead.

Jen: “Cold shoulder.” “Flu shot access panel.” Whatever this trend is called, I still hate it.

Jen: Lately, Felicity Jones seems to be trying to be on a personal mission to get her photo placed next to the word “dowdy” in the dictionary, and she might just succeed with this atrocious Gucci gown.

Nicole: I’m with you. I love the Gucci playfulness and tromp l’oeil but this mess? No.

Nicole: I wish Winona Ryder had worn something… less interesting? It looked like my Junior Prom dress (from the 90’s) and even though it’s Victor and Rolf and fit beautifully, I just wasn’t won over, especially with what looked like a terrible ass bow.

Jen: I didn’t dislike this one as much as you did. The bow on the back was a little much, but otherwise I thought it was Old Hollywood classy.

Jen: I didn’t hate Kristen Bell’s Jenny Packham dress as much as my other picks, but I was so bored by this unflattering neckline. Mandy Moore and Jessica Biel also rocked a similar look. Since when did the top of bellies become a must-show-off body part?

Nicole: I actually loved this. It was young and fit impeccably and I thought she was having a ton of fun in it.

Nicole: Gucci had some crazy dresses on the red carpet tonight and they also took Zoe Saldana down with them. This frilly mess had gorgeous colour going for it but failed to flatter and the cheap bow really did this in.

Jen: This was extra disappointing because she’s usually one of my faves.

Best and Worst Dresses at the 2016 Oscars

Most of the Oscar dresses left us a little  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  (so much so that Nicole and I could only find four dresses each for our Best list). But our worst list? Gurl, brew a pot of tea and settle in because we have *thoughts*.

BEST

Jen: Not everyone’s going to like Cate Blanchett’s green Armani. It’s a risk, and that’s why we love her. It’s a bit too “fashion-y” for my personal taste, but she’s the only one who could make it work – and she does.
Nicole: She’s on trend with green but the seafoam stands out. I agree that Cate is one of the few who could wear this without it overpowering.

Nicole: Finally, Saoirse Ronan. It’s about damn time! At least someone in the Best Actress category dressed like a goddamn winner. This dress follows the classic Calvin silhouette but looks like liquid emeralds on Saoirse.
Jen: I’m so happy about this one! She’s sexy, she’s representing Ireland with the colour, and she’s being age-appropriately playful with the mismatched earrings and killer back.

Jen: It’s so hard to pull off red on a red carpet, but Charlize Theron is killing it in Dior. I’m not sure I would have agreed to the giant boob grazing necklace, but she’s making it work.
Nicole: It’s simple, sexy and everything we would expect from Charlize.

Nicole: When I saw Naomi Watts hit the red carpet in her Armani Prive dress I thought two things: 1. Wowza, that’s hot; she nailed the dress, the Bulgari necklace and the slash of red lipstick. 2. Jen’s gonna want to be buried in that dress.
Jen: You know me too well! Sometimes we play the “what designer would we choose for a red carpet if we inexplicably became famous?”, and Armani Prive is always at the top of my list. This dress perfectly exemplifies why.

https://twitter.com/misspopc/status/704106107573145600

Jen: Tina Fey always plays it safe and classy, and this dress is no different but that doesn’t make it any less lovely. Another plus: she totally beat Reese Witherspoon in the strapless purple dress contest!
Nicole: Tina’s last few red carpets have been sexier and more confident than usual and this gown fits that new style really well.

Nicole: Margot Robbie looks like a gorgeous Oscar statue in her snakeskin print Tom Ford gown. Her loose, tussled hair is on trend and that clutch is to die for (birthday gift idea!?).
Jen: I was a little ‘meh’ on this one. Yeah, the dress is slinky and the long sleeves are a nice change of pace, but she couldn’t have run a brush through her hair?

Jen: I think Mindy Kaling’s Elizabeth Kennedy dress is incredibly flattering and the blue almost gives it the illusion of a cape, making it one of my favourite showings from her ever.
Nicole: I generally love Mindy for her colour and brilliant style but this was too sedate for me.

Nicole: I’m so very relieved to see Kate Winslet in a new style after endless red carpets in what felt like the same dress over and over. This Ralph Lauren custom is flattering to Kate’s curves and the liquid material is sexier than we’re used to on her. It’s a great departure for her.
Jen: You like this one way more than I do. In some angles it looks like liquid sex, but in others it looks like a garbage bag.

WORST

Nicole: Well, I didn’t have great hopes for Brie Larson‘s dress and as such was not disappointed. Her blue Gucci gown was actually terrific right up until just past her stunning belt and then the weird fluttery bits made it a miss.
Jen: I had huge hopes, so I’m crushed. I love the colour, but she lost me at the terrible length and the weird pleated, ruffled skirt. Her makeup is on point, though.

Jen: God, I was praying for Rachel McAdams to kill it tonight and I got so hopeful when I first got a glimpse of the colour, but then I saw the wrinkles and puckered seams and now I’m totally bummed out.
Nicole: She had a great season and I’m sad it ended with this dress as it just didn’t show her at her best.

Nicole: Man, there were some broke-ass dresses tonight. It felt like Alicia Vikander was on a roll with her last Louis Vuitton but this lemony disaster was infuriating. How do you end up in this dress as a nominee on the Oscar red carpet? How?
Jen: The yellow is a decent colour but I want to cut off the hem, bury it in a deep, deep hole and salt the earth.

Jen: The bodice on Julianne Moore’s boring black Chanel dress looks boxy and is separating her breasts in a weird way.
Nicole: Can you imagine if Julianne had worn Margot Robbie’s Tom Ford dress instead?

Nicole: I’ve HAD IT with these dresses that look all daring with their mega cut outs and sexy skin-baring designs, then we get close up and it’s just another figure skating dress. I’m talking about you, Olivia Wilde. If you’re going to wear that Valentino dress, get some double sided tape and go J-Lo style.
Jen: Yup, can suspender dresses just be over already?

Jen: I’m so bored by Jennifer Garner’s dress. This should have been her big post-divorce coming out moment, but she played it safe in a black Versace dress I feel like I’ve seen on her before. Bless her heart.
Nicole: This is not a phoenix dress. Too bad, she could’ve really lit it up.

https://twitter.com/IAMFASHlON/status/704099911390859264

Nicole: I’m so bored, so tired of Rooney Mara‘s nude coloured dresses. Her Givenchy looks too similar to her McQueen dress from the Golden Globes. Yawn.
Jen: It looks like she’s wearing a doily. Also, this girl does not need any help seeming severe, so her tight hairstyle isn’t doing her any favours.

Jen: This is Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley’s very first Oscar red carpet, and she chooses to celebrate by wearing a blah Chanel dress with a weird floaty dust ruffle? And if that weren’t bad enough, her shoes. Dear lord, her shoes!
Nicole: Oh man, so many beautiful options and this is where we end up? I honestly could’ve slept through this.

Nicole: Really, Lady Gaga? You had the choice of five gowns and that’s what you chose? After a run of really beautiful ensembles, I’m bummed that she ended up in this white Brandon Maxwell pantdress on the carpet that matters most.
Jen: My eyes haven’t even taken in the pants part of it yet because I can’t tear them away from the ill-fitting chest area. It looks like she has boob pockets!

Jen: I love Amy Poehler so much that she could basically wear a curtain and I’d still be crushing on her. But damn, I wish she hadn’t tried to test that theory.
Nicole: What the what, Poehler?! A caftan? Unacceptable.

Oscars 2015: Best and Worst Dressed on the Red Carpet

Nicole and I may be in different provinces right now, but that didn’t stop us from IM’ing all night about the hits and (mostly) misses on the Oscar red carpet. Here’s our picks for the 5 best and worst looks of the night:

BEST

Jen: When Scarlett Johansson finally showed up in this killer green Versace dress amid the sea of pale gowns, I tweeted “this is the red carpet equivalent of a mic drop.” The colour is stunning, the cut is unbelievably flattering (the fact that she had a baby four months ago breaks my brain), and the shaved hair is Thunderdome chic. This is without a doubt my favourite look of the entire night.
Nicole: I’m super not sold on the necklace but she is radiant against all the white dresses and that fit… wowza.

Nicole: I did not imagine that Laura Dern would be on my best dressed list but her silver dress by Alberta Ferretti looks like a suit of armor and it’s stunning.  The fit is perfect and the flowing back of the dress contrasts with the tough front. It’s much more interesting than I’d expect to see on this red carpet!
Jen: Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by this dress too, especially the view from the back. It’s fierce and sexy.

Jen: Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike is another rare star to make a break from the pale gowns and wow us with a colour. This stunning Givenchy fits beautifully and hugs her in all the right places. (She also just had a baby, which is beyond depressing.)
Nicole: This is THE dress of the night for me and a great do-over after  the disappointing dress at the Golden Globes. The contrasting textures really flatter her curves and the corset top is gorgeous.

Nicole: Dakota Johnson is in a simple red column dress and if it not for the gorgeous shoulder detail this St. Laurent wouldn’t be a standout. The slash of red lipstick is perfect and the whole ensemble shines against her pale skin.
Jen: You liked this one a lot more than I did. It’s ok, but this is her big moment, and I really wish she’d went for it in a much bigger/bolder way.

Jen: Mark your calendar! I’m including Lady Gaga on a best dressed list! Sure, some of it is due to the fact that it was slim pickings on the Oscar red carpet this year, but it’s hard to ignore the beauty of this custom Azzedine Alaïa dress. Even her hideous dishwashing gloves couldn’t overpower it.
Nicole: Okay, so it’s a white dress in a sea of white dresses but wow, this is beautiful.  The architectural shape still flatters Gaga when it could easily overwhelm anyone else.

WORST

Nicole: It’s heartbreaking really, the Dior Couture dress that Marion Cotillard is wearing looks pretty (if too loose) from the front but falls apart when you see the back with tons of volume and a weird black strip. This reminds me of the Jennifer Lawrence Dior from last year, which also wasn’t super flattering and had weird volume issues.
Jen: Agreed. I was almost going to give this one a pass for quirkiness when I saw it from the front, and then she turned around and showed off the bustle. Hard pass!

Jen: It’s not that there were a lot of terrible dresses on this year’s Oscar red carpet. That would have at least kept things interesting. Instead, we got a lot of ‘meh’ dresses — disappointing gowns that failed to elicit any meaningful reaction at all. We were bored to tears by Reese Witherspoon’s black and white Tom Ford (way too similar to what’s she’s worn in the past), Cate Blanchett’s basic black Margiela dress, Julianne Moore’s unflattering Chanel couture, Emma Stone’s old lady Elie Saab, Zoe Saldana’s Versace with its bad straps, Sienna Miller’s unremarkable Oscar de la Renta, and Keira Knightley’s Valentino, which makes her look like she rushed to the carpet from a high school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Nicole: SIGH. So much white.  I had such high hopes for Julianne as she was really strong throughout the season and Emma Stone makes such beautiful choices but it was just underwhelming. I was going to comment on Keira Knightly but my mother just reminded me that if I can’t say anything nice…
Jen: This is why you shouldn’t watch award shows when visiting home. Not saying anything nice is the WHOLE POINT.

https://twitter.com/IAMFASHlON/status/569647457841360896

Nicole: While I’m certainly not surprised by Felicity Jones’s boring prom dress, I am shocked that it’s Alexander McQueen.  The bodice is lovely and fits beautifully and then it poofs out into an overwhelming skirt. I sound like an old lady, but she has such a great figure and she’s so young; I wish she’d embrace a more adventurous style!
Jen: Though the colour was a bit underwhelming, I really liked the bodice. But wow, she was completely swallowed up by that skirt, which is a shame.

Jen: As a pale lady, I know the rules of dressing for alabaster complexions. Nicole Kidman does too so why is she breaking all of them in this Louis Vuitton gown. It’s too pale, too sparkly, too ill-fitting. And dear lord, why the belt? Why?! She looks like a bowling pin.
Nicole: I actually like the belt.  I just would like to see the belt on a much less boring dress.

Nicole: When Lupita Nyong’o stepped onto the red carpet (holding her own umbrella, no less) all I could see was the very top of her white pearl custom Calvin Klein dress and I thought… this could be great.  But I couldn’t get over the awkward pearl in the middle and in the end it just comes across as too much.  Maybe if they’d used fewer than 6,000 pearls?
Jen: Remember when she KILLED it all award season last year? What’s happened? This is her latest misstep, and it’s a biggie. It looks like she’s wearing a bunch of old lady necklaces that somehow melded into a dress in a freak accident.
