-Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart have broken up following two years of dating — for now.

-In happier Hollywood couple news, Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix are engaged after being together for three years.

-So that was how this season of Big Little Lies wrapped, huh? Huh.

Emma Thompson getting day-drunk with Hannah Gatsby and doing the robot for the paps is a mood.

-This was poetic: Avengers: Endgame passed Avatar to become the biggest movie in history at the same moment Marvel was on the Comic-Con stage presenting Phase 4. (Which sounds awesome, btw. So happy for Simu Liu from CBC’s Kim’s Convenience, and tickled that dudes are so upset about Natalie Portman playing Thor.)

-The movie side of Comic-Con felt really subdued, but there was a TON of TV news and trailers.

-I didn’t expect Comic-Con to make me emotional, but the panels for shows that are ending got to me. The Supernatural dudes teared up, Arrow’s Stephen Amell teared up, The Good Place’s Kristen Bell teared up. Dammit, feelings!

-The three Andrew Lincoln-led Walking Dead movies will no longer air on AMC; they’ll be released exclusively in theaters. Do people still like this franchise enough to spend movie money on it?!

-It’s odd that HBO thought it would be a good idea to have a Game of Thrones panel at Comic-Con. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss bailed, but lots of the cast showed up. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau got some boos from the audience when he said he thought it made sense for Jamie to die in the arms of Cersei.

Rose Leslie is exiting The Good Fight, which makes sense because last season it was like she was on a completely different show.

-Oof, that Veronica Mars season. I loved it right up until until I didn’t. No spoilers but female characters don’t need to be tortured and miserable to be “strong” or worth rooting for. It’s straight out of the Joss Whedon handbook and we should have moved past this shit by now.

-Showrunner Rob Thomas is giving interviews about the big twist, and said “It is a gamble. If we never get to do Veronica Mars again because the fans turned on the show… then I placed a large bet and lost it.” It’s poses an interesting question, though. I don’t think creators owe fans anything (even if their work is fan-funded), but I also don’t think fans own creators their continued loyalty if they do something they know the fans will hate. This move just pissed off what is very likely their most vocal, fervent fans (the ones, I would argue, who were largely responsible for resurrecting the show). What will it look like if a lot of those fans wash their hands of it?

-Also, his defense is that it’s a “noir” show, which falls apart if you look at the tropes of noir.

-Good on Tina Majorino (who played Mac) for clarifying that she didn’t come back for the new Veronica Mars season not because of scheduling conflicts, but because of her character’s “diminished value.”

Cate Blanchett showed up at a drag brunch in Toronto this weekend. Dammit, I’m going to that on Sunday. Just one week off!

-Here’s the first new trailer for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a movie about Mr. Rogers, played by Tom Hanks.

Vanity Fair Offers a Peek Inside Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Vanity Fair’s new issue has our first in-depth look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, including new characters like Keri Russell‘s Zorri Bliss and Richard E. Grant‘s Allegiant General Pryde.

Natalie Portman has hit back at ‘creepy’ Moby for his ‘disturbing’ account of their relationship in his memoir, telling Harper’s Bazaar UK: “I was surprised to hear that he characterized the very short time that I knew him as dating because my recollection is a much older man being creepy with me when I just had graduated high school. He said I was 20; I definitely wasn’t. I was a teenager. I had just turned 18. There was no fact-checking from him or his publisher – it almost feels deliberate.” He then countered by posting “proof” on IG: a super creepy pic of them, in which he’s shirtless and she’s grinning uncomfortably. It’s all quite gross.

-Congrats to Zoe Kravitz, who reportedly had a secret wedding to Karl Glusman.

-At the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood presser in Cannes, Quentin Tarantino snapped at a female reporter from The New York Times who asked why Margot Robbie wasn’t given more to say or do in the film. He groused “I reject your hypothesis” and didn’t expand. Bless Margot Robbie for trying her best to answer thoughtfully though, saying that it was an interesting acting experiment: “To really show those wonderful sides of [Sharon Tate] could be done without speaking…I did feel like I got a lot of time to explore the character without dialogue specifically.” (I love how Brad Pitt looks over at her supportively when she’s done, like “valiant attempt trying to polish this turd”).

James Corden did a Reddit AMA and all the top comments are about his terrible reputation. I love that even the questions that look legit end with “also, is it true you’re an asshole?”

George Clooney went into detail about his “bad” motorcycle crash in Italy: “I was just waiting for the switch to turn off.”

-I love that Gwendoline Christie predicted the Game of Thrones ending in an interview a few seasons ago. (I also love that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was like “wait, that doesn’t make sense.” He is us.)

-Also, even though it looked like the finale was setting up an Arya-focused sequel — it wasn’t.

-I haven’t watched Orange Is The New Black in years, but this promo of the stars singing the theme song kinda got me.  The final season drops on Netflix July 26.

Olivia Wilde‘s directorial debut Booksmart, which opens this weekend, is at 99% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with nearly 100 reviews counted. That’s insanely impressive.

-This is a really good interview with SNL’s Heidi Gardner, who talks about being a hairstylist for nine years before transitioning into comedy.

-I also loved this profile on Timothy Olyphant, who talks about saying yes to every role after Deadwood was cancelled — because he had just bought a new house. “Those experiences were equally valuable…Find yourself bald in Bulgaria doing some pile of shit, that will get you up a little earlier in the morning and make you work a little harder.”

Michelle Williams is getting rave reviews for her turn in Fosse/Verdon (especially this week’s episode), and what’s even more impressive is that she’s not using a vocal coach.

-I really liked this NYT feature on how “Old Town Road” became the biggest song in the world thanks to memes and controversy.

Jesse Eisenberg grapples with masculinity in The Art Of Self Defense’s first trailer.

Is Emma Roberts Dating Garrett Hedlund?

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters have reportedly called off their engagement — and she’s been spotted looking cozy with Garrett Hedlund.

Pete Davidson joined Kate Beckinsale and her family on the anniversary of her dad’s death. (Sidenote: I’ve been staring at this photo of them for the last five minutes. I just don’t get it.)

-Who’s criticizing Gemma Chan? Let that precious unicorn alone!

-According to Us Weekly, Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman haven’t quite wrapped their heads around the fact that they might actually end up going to prison.

-Ouch! 90% of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” royalties are going to the composers of “My Favorite Things.”

-This is a really fascinating deep dive into the writers room on The Good Place.

-When Sophie Turner realized she was on the Jumboton at MSG, she chugged a glass of red wine. Which is both gross and awesome.

-Five years after it first aired Andy Daly revisits the pancakes episode of Review, which might be my favourite half-hour of television ever.

-The Stranger Things season 3 trailer is here. The bit with Steve geeking out with imaginary lightsabers with Dustin in front of the hot girl warmed my heart.

Jordan Peele hid three Corey Feldman Easter eggs in Us.

-Bill & Ted 3 is finally, officially happening. I don’t know how Keanu Reeves is making this haircut work, but he really is.

Mindy Kaling just got a straight-to-series Netflix comedy inspired by her childhood.

Ricky Gervais‘ new Netflix show After Life, about a grieving widower whose suicide attempt is interrupted by a dog, is getting rave reviews.

-Speaking of rave reviews, critics are digging Jann Arden’s six-part series, which debuts tonight.

-Today Disney closed their $71 billion acquisition of Fox entertainment business, one of the biggest media consolidations in Hollywood history. It brings nearly all Marvel heroes and villains under one owner, with the Fox-owned X-Men and Deadpool now in the Disney-controlled MCU. (It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll be able to keep the Deadpool movies profane despite Disney’s squeaky clean rep.) On the TV side, Disney now has a massive TV studio with A-list showrunners like Seth MacFarlane, Lee Daniels and Kurt Sutter.  They also acquired Fox’s 30% stake of Hulu, which now gives Disney a controlling interest of 60%.

-Here’s the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. People are going crazy for it, but I’m not sold yet.

-Also, this video on the Easter eggs you may have missed in the film’s poster made me laugh a lot.

-Here’s the first trailer for Lucy in the Sky, starring Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz and Dan Stevens. It’s produced by Reese Witherspoon and is the directorial debut of Legion/Fargo creator Noah Hawley.  So yeah, I’m in.
