Jennifer Aniston Talks Matt Lauer, Harvey Weinstein

jennifer-aniston-variety

Jennifer Aniston covers Variety to promote her new Apple series The Morning Show, and talks about researching Matt Lauer before filming  (“It’s such a strange thing; it felt oddly like my dad did something terrible. I trusted him and had been interviewed by him. He was there for so many moments in my life. And when Friends was ending, it was Katie [Couric] and Matt interviewing us”), says that Harvey Weinstein knew not to bully her (“He knew better. I remember, right when [his ex-wife] Georgina’s clothing line Marchesa was starting. That’s when he came to visit me in London while we were shooting. He’d be like, ‘Ok, so I’d like you to wear one of these to the premiere.’ And I went through the book, and at the time, it wasn’t what it is today. It was not for me. He was like, ‘You have to wear the dress.’ That was my only bullying. And I was like, ‘No, I will not wear the dress'”), and explains why the Friends reunion hasn’t happened (“Because our producers wouldn’t want it, wouldn’t let us. Look, it’s not been without our desire to, because our fans have wanted it so much”).

Ann Curry tweeted about Matt Lauer‘s accuser: “Brooke Nevils is a credible young woman of good character. She came to NBC News an eager and guileless 20-something, brimming with talent. I believe she is telling the truth. And that breaks my heart.”

-Meanwhile, Nevils has responded to his denial: “I am not afraid of him now, regardless of his threats, bullying, and the shaming and predatory tactics I knew he would (and now has) tried to use against me. The shame in this story belongs to him.”

-In Elle, Natalie Portman says she’s glad to have shaken off her “manic pixie dream girl” image from Garden State. “It’s definitely a relief to be out of the phase where you’re supposed to be adorable…It certainly is stifling to be the one who’s enacting someone else’s idea of how a young woman should behave.”

-Also in Elle, Zendaya opens up about her anxiety: “I already know after this interview is over, I’m going to spiral about it for weeks.”

Drew Barrymore just landed a daytime talk show. I think she’ll be great at it, but with new shows from Kelly Clarkson, Keke Palmer and RuPaul the field is getting crowded.

-Ruh roh. Lindsay Lohan has reportedly been fired from The Masked Singer Australia.

-Now that we’re all pretty much over Chris Pratt, which famous Chris should take his place in the best Chris ranking?

-Do you remember how after Fresh Prince, Will Smith said that he and his manager sat down and studied the top 10 grossing movies of all time to determine their comment elements, and then set out to only make those? This article highlights how his most recent career moves have been just as methodical.

-Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto reportedly felt “alienated and upset” when Warner Bros. decided to move ahead with a solo Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix. So there might be something redeeming about Joker after all!

-Movie stars continue to jump to Apple’s upcoming streaming service. Clive Owen and Julianne Moore have signed on for a new series.

-Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh appeared on The Social this week and talked about DMing Rihanna.

Robert Downey Jr. has asked not to be considered for an Oscar for Avengers: Endgame which is very nice but like, who told him he was being considered?

-I really like this piece on how Succession uses Shiv as a weapon. Everyone is so ruthless on this show that I think audiences automatically gravitate to the female characters like Gerri and Shiv for glimpses of humanity, and last week’s episode shattered that.

-Even though I’m about to get on an Air Canada flight and bracing myself for the worst (because it’s AC and they’re usually terrible), this commercial Sandra Oh did for them about how to travel like a Canadian is very cute. (Speaking of which I’m taking a few days off. Be back next week!)

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt voice teenage brothers on a quest to meet their dad in the trailer for Pixar’s Onward.

Joker Bans Press from Premiere Red Carpet

-And the hits just keep coming for Joker. They just dis-invited interview press from the red carpet at this weekend’s premiere. I don’t understand how you make a movie and spend weeks talking about how gritty and realistic it is, and then be COMPLETELY unprepared to answer questions about how it might trigger violence?

-Meanwhile, director Todd Phillips once again shit on comic book films. He’s not making one of those, you see. Oh no, he’s making a “real” movie. He told The Wrap, “I literally described to Joaquin at one point in those three months as like, ‘Look at this as a way to sneak a real movie in the studio system under the guise of a comic book film’. It wasn’t, ‘We want to glorify this behavior.’ It was literally like ‘Let’s make a real movie with a real budget and we’ll call it f–ing Joker’.” Seriously, doesn’t he realize that comic fanboys are their target demo?

Noah Centineo and Dancing with the Stars alum Alexis Ren are dating. Look, I know everyone’s mad he’s not with Lana Condor in real life but  let’s just be happy for him. It can’t be easy to find someone willing to put up with that Spencer Pratt-y beard.

George and Amal Clooney celebrated their 5th anniversary in NYC with BFFs Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford. Five years! I’ve repressed almost all of them…

Kanye West‘s album is expected to drop tonight, just in case you don’t have any plans and want to torture yourself with a reminder of how good he used to be.

Frankie Muniz is a Lizzo fan, which makes me a Frankie Muniz fan.

-Netflix’s The Politician drops today, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Platt, and critics mostly like it.

-No one is watching TV anymore, huh? NBC’s new comedies bombed last night. Perfect Harmony only got a 0.5 in the 18-49 demo, and Sunnyside did even worse at 0.4. That’s BAD. (I remember some of the CW superhero shows I watch coming at at 0.4 last season and I cringed. And that was bad FOR THE CW!)

-This is an excellent outfit on Katie Holmes. It’s like she’s going to take over the corporate world but also maybe have a bath first.

-Well well well. Spider-Man is staying in the MCU — for now. Disney and Sony struck a deal for one more movie.

Natalie Portman made fun of her new Lady Thor look on Ellen.

-I’m actually surprised that Vampire Diaries’ stars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley like each other enough to launch a bourbon line together.

Helen Mirren plays Catherine The Great in the trailer for the upcoming HBO miniseries.

Jennifer Lopez Is a Hustler

jennifer-lopez-variety-cover

Jennifer Lopez is on the cover of Variety, in which she talks about American Idol (“Everybody was like, ‘Don’t do this. Your career will be over, and they won’t offer you any movies.’ I was like, ‘The truth is, I’m not getting offered a whole bunch of movies, so what are they not going to offer me?'”), how Alex Rodriguez supports her (“He loves being at every show that he can be at. I go to all his baseball games”), and what she’s like as a boss (“I’m firm. I’m not a yeller or a screamer. I think nobody likes to disappoint me, because I get very quiet. I’m also relentless. I don’t have hours”).

-Also, this is a great clip of JLo talking about accidentally making Constance Wu bleed on the Hustlers set. (I love that Cardi B interrupts her costars with “Wait a minute, actresses!”)

-This is a good Taylor Swift interview (though I’m bummed that the writer describes her Nashville apartment ans “an Etsy fever dream” and there’s no photos).

-This weekend’s D23 Expo dumped a ton of new Disney news, including footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Dark Rey!), our first look at Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil, Black Panther II will come out on May 6, 2022 and Kit Harington has joined the cast of The Eternals.

Tom Holland addressed the Sony-Marvel split at the event, saying “It’s been a crazy week, but I want you to know I am grateful from the bottom of my heart and I love you 3,000.”

-Some of the most exciting announcements came from Disney+, the new streaming service (launching in Canada for $8.99/month). News of their shows — which will drop weekly instead of all at once — included announcements of a Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight live-action series, confirmation that Kat Dennings and Randall Park will reprise their previous MCU roles in WandaVision alongside Kathryn Hahn, news that Hilary Duff reprise her role as Lizzie McGuire, a new High School Musical series is coming, and the reveal that Jeff Goldbum (who I met this weekend and will never stop giggling about) is getting his own show.

-The first round of SNL hosts have been announced. That Phoebe Waller-Bridge / Taylor Swift night should be something else.

Kaitlynn Carter attended Miley CyrusVMAs rehearsal on Monday.

-This is a lovely Kirsten Dunst cover story.

-I cannot believe that E!Online ran their annual TV’s Top Leading Man poll and Can Yaman (the guy from the Turkish soap I’m obsessed with) beat out everyone else. I didn’t know so many other people watched it?! I feel so seen!! (Here it is if you want to also be obsessed.)

-This article about a writer who spent several months of my life and over $1,000 on Goop products is worth your time. It goes beyond the surface to examine how Goop uses health anxiety to attract aspirational customers. And it’s really funny.

-A teaser trailer and poster dropped over the weekend for the upcoming Breaking Bad film, dubbed El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. It will bow on Netflix Oct. 11, air on AMC later on, and focus on Aaron Paul‘s Jesse Pinkman. “It’s a chapter of Breaking Bad that I didn’t realize that I wanted,” Paul told The NY Times.

Natalie Portman plays an astronaut who has a tough time re-adjusting when she returns to Earth in Lucy in the Sky, which costars Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman and Dan Stevens.
