Lupita Nyong’o Covers British Vogue

Lupita Nyong’o Covers British Vogue

Lupita Nyong’o’s first ever British Vogue cover is stunning. She talks about her decision to stay mum on her personal life (“Privacy is a commodity that is hard to come by”), what she looks for in a script (“I don’t get fulfillment from the number of zeros attached to a project. What I’m seduced by is the potential to shift a narrative. That is very seductive to me, having social and cultural impact”) and hanging out with costars (“Filming is so time-consuming. And intense. With Black Panther, a lot of us were single. On Little Monsters, nobody was single. Everyone, when they’re done with their day’s work, wants to go home to their families, which makes a whole lot of sense. When you don’t have that it’s very isolating”).

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their 7-month-old reportedly flew to Toronto over the holidays to see friends, including Meghan’s BFF Jessica Mulroney. They later met up with Meghan’s mom in Victoria.

Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello also spent time in Toronto over the holidays (though she wasn’t spotted with him on NYE).

-Congrats to Michelle Williams, who is reportedly pregnant and engaged to Hamilton director Thomas Kail. They met on set while working on the FX show Fosse/Verdon, which Kail directed.

-Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator/star Rachel Bloom, who is 7 months pregnant, got stranded on the side of the road with her husband in Bakersfield and tweeted that they were going to sleep in their car, so a couple invited them into their home.

-Tragic news: prolific television producer Jenji Kohan (creator of Orange Is The New Black and Weeds) is mourning the sudden death of her 20-year-old son, who died following a ski accident in Utah.

Beyoncé posted a black screen on Instagram 10 minutes before midnight on NYE, and the internet lost its poo, thinking it was another surprise album drop. The comments under the post were hilarious (my fave was “Bey MAAM, I’m poor, go to sleep”). But she quickly followed it up with a video retrospective of her highlights of the decade.

Megan Thee Stallion and Zendaya attended Beyoncé‘s NYE party.

-This is weird: eleven of the last 14 seasons of Survivor — including each of the last five — have been won by men.

Sharon Stone was blocked from the Bumble dating app — for impersonating Sharon Stone.

Busy Philips did an IG post about the shitty way she found out her E! show was being cancelled, and it included screenshots of the hilariously profane letter her daughter wrote to the network.

Florence Pugh, 23, does not seem to love it when people remind her that her BF Zach Braff is 44.

Jodie Turner Smith said the nude photo she posted on IG was “not a thirst trap” since her hubby, Joshua Jackson, took the pic. Works for me.

Whitney Houston‘s family continues to be plagued by tragedy. Nick Gordon, who dated Houston’s late daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, died Wednesday in Florida following a reported drug overdose.

-Bombshell is bombing at the box office. I saw it yesterday and I walked out with the same question as this person: “who exactly was that for?!”

-The performances were good though, especially Margot Robbie. Things are already looking up for her in 2020 — she’s confirmed that Jared Leto will not appear as Joker in Birds of Prey.

-In other Joker-related news, no one is doing more to make me feel better about not seeing Joker than its director, Todd Phillips. In a new interview, he claims the success of the Joaquin Phoenix-led film had nothing to do with the character’s connection to Batman.

-Also, the fact that Phillips packed the movie with homages to his hero Martin Scorsese — only to have Scorsese admit he hasn’t seen it — is amazing. (“I saw clips of it. I know it. So it’s like, why do I need to. I get it. It’s fine.”) The other amazing part of that Scorsese interview is when he basically says that he talked all that shit about Marvel movies in the press so that he could get a meeting with Disney’s Bob Iger about film preservation.

Kim Kardashian did NOT give her daughter the shirt John F. Kennedy was shot in as a Christmas present. Just in case you were worried about that.

-This is probably the review of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that best captures how I felt about it.

-Meanwhile, a wild Reddit conspiracy theory about why the new Star Wars is so bad has made #ReleaseTheJJCut a trending topic. Look, big studios are always going to have notes and demand changes, for better or worse. That’s how blockbusters are made. That doesn’t mean Disney was trying to purposefully torpedo J.J. Abrams‘ reputation so his future WB/DC projects would tank. That’s ridiculous. (And also, Chris Terrio was hired to co-write Rise of Skywalker on the heels of two terrible Justice League movies and Batman V Superman, so the actual movie this conspiracy theory is about disproves the idea that one bad film could actually tank a white man’s Hollywood career).

-Not to mention the fact that of the five Disney-era Star Wars movies since 2015, only The Last Jedi didn’t have a production crisis.

-Speaking of Star Wars, now that he’s no longer under contract John Boyega has gone a little wild on social media. I don’t particularly love jokes about “laying the pipe” with Rey or when actors make fun of shippers, but it’s kind of fun to see him completely unleash.

-As of yesterday, Friends is no longer be available to stream in the U.S. on Netflix. I wonder if and how that’s going to affect this year’s subscription numbers.

-I binged the entire second season of You this holiday break. I’m happy with that decision.

-Here’s the new trailer for A Quiet Place 2. It’s still quiet, and still creepy.

When Mariah Met Mellie

Millie Bobby Brown got to meet Mariah Carey. (Seriously though, every picture of MBB lately makes me double take. She looks so different and I can’t figure out what it is.)

-This might be the most cringe-worthy segment the Ellen Show has ever aired: Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and Ellen Degeneres debated which celeb male Charlize Theron should date, all while Charlize looked like she wanted to murder everyone in the room who was allowing this to happen. AND THEN they showed a photo of Kidman’s ex Lenny Kravitz and suddenly everyone had murder eyes.

-The Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun feud kicked into high gear last night, went Swift took to social media to accuse Braun and her former label of blocking her from playing her old songs at next weekend’s American Music Awards. Her not having control over the songs that she wrote? Not cool. Her siccing her legion of fans on anyone who disagrees with her? Also not cool. This whole situation is a not cool fest…

-The Actors on Actors interviews continue to roll out. Today’s participants: Charlize Theron and Adam Driver, and Tom Hanks and Renée Zellweger.

-Survivor’s Elizabeth and Missy have apologized for their actions on this week’s episode: “Sexual harassment and sexual assault are extremely serious, life altering topics that I do not take lightly. They have no business being used as tactics to further one’s own agenda, whether it be in real life or in the game of Survivor.”

Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson are quickly turning into my fave celeb couple.

-Quibi (the short form video platform) isn’t expected to launch until next year, but it continues to reel in stars. Bill Murray has signed on to star in a Peter Farrelly comedy series, Will Arnett is going to host a comedy series, the Russo Brothers are creating a Marvel vs DC docu-series, and there’s a Varsity Blues revival.

Lauryn Hill just dropped her first new solo song in five years.

-This is a great look at how Kelly Clarkson pulls off all those covers on her talk show.

-Congrats to Lena Waithe, who revealed that she secretly married her fiancée, Alana Mayo, at a courthouse in San Francisco.

GOOP’s holiday gift guide is fully of goopy ridiculousness.

Mo’Nique is taking Netflix to court for pay discrimination.

-Actress-turned-influencer Eva Amurri, who is currently pregnant, announced her and her husband have split.

This piece is the best thing I’ve read about The Morning Show so far — especially if you’re a Jennifer Aniston scholar.

-I’m just catching up on the controversy about The Social and I don’t really get the uproar? Yeah, Jess‘ comments about hockey players being bullies is subjective (though she did clearly say it was based on her experience), but everything else is pretty undeniable, no? Hockey is played by predominantly white dudes, and it’s really expensive to put your kids in it so it’s mostly dominated by families with a lot of disposable income and time.

-Holy crap, Sesame Street just did a Succession spoof starring Brian Cox and it’s everything I’ve ever wanted.

Sandra Oh Celebrates Korean Designers

sandra oh porter magazine

-This Sandra Oh fashion shoot in Porter magazine is fabulous and just what we need to kick off the weekend. (The interview is fire, too.)

Pete Davidson and Margaret Qualley have reportedly called it quits. But they didn’t even get around to regrettable matching tattoos yet!

This video of Paul Rudd demonstrating how he takes pictures of celebrities in a way that makes it look like a butt is hovering over them is possibly the best thing I’ve ever seen.

-Grace and Frankie stars Jane Fonda and Sam Waterston were arrested this afternoon in DC during a climate change protest.

-This documentary clip of Meghan Markle getting emotional about her negative press hit me right in the heart guts. “Thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m ok.”

Christina Hendricks announced her split from husband Geoffrey Arend. He got 10 years of marriage out of her, which is about 9.5 more than most of us predicted.

-I love Paul Feig, and this interview cements it. He says of all of his films having female leads: “I was an only child. I grew up next to a family of eight kids, six of whom were girls. I liked the humour of joking around with my female friends because male humour devolves, eventually, into homophobia, punching and name-calling. I’d rather just have goofy fun.”

Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston recreated one of their most memorable scenes together from Friends, and it was all kinds of great.

-This lip sync video with Penn Badgley is incredibly hot. (I once saw him on a dance floor with Zoe Kravitz and I thought they were going to make the whole place spontaneously combust.)

-I finally got around to watching the Succession season finale. Are people seriously creating conspiracy theories about that end shot? Even Brian Cox doesn’t buy it. It was more like — game recognize game.

Jennifer Lopez was spotted wearing a wedding dress on the set of her new movie and … is it supposed to fit like that?

-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will no longer be being released as planned in China because Quentin Tarantino refuses to trim scenes of violence or the one that featured Bruce Lee sparring with Brad Pitt’s stuntman character. Which — and I have never said this before and likely won’t again but — good for Quentin Tarantino.

-Here’s the trailer for Bombshell, starring Margot Robbie, Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman.
