Kit Harington Comes To Terms With Game of Thrones’ Ending

-In his Variety cover story, Kit Harington talks about the finale season of Game of Thrones (“Balls out, I think is the term. [HBO] could have easily set the same budget as they did for season 7, but they went bigger”), his infamous Jon Snow haircut, and how emotional he and his castmates got on their final day of shooting (“I saw [Peter Dinklage] just break down”).

-Just when I thought I couldn’t get more excited about Hustlers, the Constance Wu/Jennifer Lopez movie about former strip club employees who take down their Wall Street clients, Cardi B just joined the cast! It also stars Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, Julia Stiles, Mercedes Ruehl and Trace Lysette.

–Jason Sudeikis allowed Ellen Degeneres and his wife Olivia Wilde to cut his hair on TV. He shouldn’t have.

-Jesus. After Netflix cancelled One Day at a Time, Sony TV immediately started to shop it around and was approached by CBS All Access — but a clause in Netflix’s contract prevents the show from moving to another streaming service. So not only did they cancel it while at the same time talking about the need for diverse storytelling, they also made it more difficult for the show to live on. Stuff like that, and this article on Netflix’s monoculture machine, have me worried.

-Also, this is fascinating: the under 34 crowd now watch nearly 50% less TV than in 2010.

-In a show of support for the writers guild, The Wire creator David Simon blasted the practice of agency packaging.

-I haven’t watched Catastrophe’s new season yet, but by all accounts the Carrie Fisher episode is going to kill me.

-CW’s Jane the Virgin spinoff, Jane the Novela, will be an anthology series in which each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane and narrated by the author herself.

-I can’t even look at these pictures of Lupita Nyong’o. Those eyes! Why???

–Rachel Bilson is returning to her Fox roots in a new show called Lovestruck.

-David Boreanaz is hinting at an Angel reunion … and I don’t hate it?

Is Charlie Hunnam Cancelled?

-Jesus, Charlie Hunnam. I really didn’t want to end the week badly, but then you went ahead and praised Jordan Peterson in an interview. WHY?!?!?

-This is incredibly sad: One Direction star Louis Tomlinson‘s sister Félicité died of a suspected heart attack. She was only 18.

–Soulja Boy was arrested on Friday for violating his parole.

-Look, between the college entry scandal and James Gunn being reinstated as the director of Guardians of Galaxy vol 3, I seriously can’t remember a week with more WTF? breaking news. Gunn returning to the fold is a good thing; his firing was the result of bs outrage manufactured by alt-right douchenozzles.

–Insiders tell THR that Marvel/Disney never actually undertook a search for someone to replace the filmmaker and had gone back to Gunn and made a deal…in secret.

-It’s weird to be at the “all my teen crushes now play dads” phase of life. Freddie Prinze Jr. will play Nancy Drew’s hot dad in upcoming CW pilot.

-This is a good article from the NYT’s TV critic about how Netflix is not your friend, no matter how cute their Twitter feed is.

-HBO revealed how long each Game of Thrones season 8 episode will be. Settle in — there will be a buncSoulja Boyh that run 2-hours.

-Yay for Canadian YouTube superstar Lilly Singh, who is getting her own NBC late night talk show!

–Lori Loughlin is reportedly being written out of the final season of Fuller House.

-Netflix has finally removed the 2013 Lac-Megantic train derailment footage from Bird Box.

–Milo Ventimiglia treated James Corden to a lap dance and Kate Beckinsale got to watch.

–Alicia Keys‘ son flirting with Taylor Swift at the iHeart Awards is all kinds of cute.

–Julia Roberts rightly believes that a movie like Pretty Woman wouldn’t fly these days: “I don’t think you could make that movie now, right? So many things you could poke a hole in, but I don’t think it takes away from people being able to enjoy it.”

–Lily James and Alicia Vikander get married in this clip from the Four Weddings and a Funeral reunion special for Red Nose Day.

Game of Thrones Teases the End

-Entertainment Weekly dropped 16 collectible covers for Game of Thrones’ final season. The story details the biggest battle sequence the show has ever done as an “uneasy collection of allies” will fight the Night King and his army at Winterfell, and there’s talk that one on the final six episodes will be “a calm-before-the-storm entry” with “play-like intimacy” that features closed-door scenes between pairs of characters.

–Luke Perry is dead at 52 after suffering a stroke. This one is a heartbreaker. Twitter is now flooded with celebs and journalists telling stories about how he was more lovely and grounded than you could ever expect from someone who got so famous so fast so young. 90210 was super important to me and people my age, and I crushed on Pike from the Buffy movie hard. And he had just gained a whole new generation of fans with Riverdale. Tragic.

-I really liked this tribute to Perry and his ability to play the ultimate fantasy boyfriend.

-As if this day couldn’t get worse for gen-xers, The Prodigy frontman Keith Flint was found dead at his home in Essex today of a suspected suicide.

-I guess I’m having an emotional day or whatever but the Queer Eye season 3 trailer made me tear up.

–Pete Davidson and Kate Beckinsale were all over each other at a hockey game. That’s a lot of tongue.

–Khloe Kardashian swiftly changed her tune about Jordyn Woods.

–John Mulaney’s SNL monologue about New York was very, very good. Also, the “What’s That Name” skit  was legit funny.

-It’s lovely that Gwyneth Paltrow attended Chris Martin‘s bday party and all, but um…is she wearing pajamas?

-This is an interesting look at how Esquire lost the Bryan Singer story.

–Sir Ian McKellen just gave a master class in apologizing.

-Good on Jaden Smith for helping bring clean water to Flint.

-This profile of Rob Delaney is both hilarious and moving. He’s incredibly open about the death of his two-year-old son and his worries about having another child soon after (“I knew that I would ‘love’ him. But I didn’t know if I would like him or bond with him, ’cause I didn’t know if I would be too afraid to”).

-Steven Spielberg ramped up his case against streaming sites like Netflix from being eligible to win an Oscar and people went after him HARD. And I get it; Spielberg’s statement came off as incredibly elitist (I especially hate the part where he seems to consider an Emmy Award as insubstantial as a Teen Choice — “Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar”), it’s a really weird year to be praising Oscar-quality movies when crap like Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody did so well, his insistence of needing to see movies in theatres is undercut by the knowledge that most Oscar voters watch the nominees with screeners at home, and you can’t really deny that Netflix is opening up more types of movies to more types of people — including those who can’t go to the theatre due to expense, disabilities, etc. On the flip side, Speilberg’s critics are holding up Roma and Mudbound as movies Netflix was responsible for bringing to life but that doesn’t really track (both of those movies were bid on by numerous distributors and Netflix won), Netflix spent $50 million campaigning for Roma’s Oscar chances, and I am very concerned about the kind of monopoly Netflix is building and remain skeptical about how sustainable their business model is. The whole issue is incredibly thorny, and maybe giving Oscar-campaigning movies a limited theatrical run for a few weeks before it hits Netflix is the best of both worlds? I don’t know the answer but I do know that the blind stanning of Netflix during this debate surprised me.

-I cannot wait to watch HBO’s documentary on the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her scamming blood-testing company Theranos.

-The new trailer for Shazam has dropped. I’ve been in a theatre twice now when a trailer for this has aired and the audience didn’t laugh once. Not a peep.
