Justin Timberlake’s Post-Documentary Apology

Justin Timberlake has apologized to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. “I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right,” he said on Instagram.

-Jezebel has the best headline: “Like Most Women in Their Late 30s, Britney Spears Has Received a Halfhearted Apology From Her Terrible High School Boyfriend:

-It looks like that documentary didn’t just wring an long-overdue mea culpa out of Timberlake; it may be helping turn the tide  for Britney Spears. A judge ruled against her father in the latest estate court hearing, denying his bid to retain control of delegating her investments.

Pitbull also has thoughts on the Britney Spears’ situation: “They are not called mistakes they are called “must-takes” and mistakes don’t make you.” Um, ok?

-Holy crap, Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are creating and starring in a Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series for Amazon Prime. Is that not the most perfect combination of words?!

-The men of the Buffyverse have finally started to show support for their female costars. So far, David Boreanaz has only liked Charisma Carpenter’s posts, but J August Richards, who played Gunn on Angel, tweeted to her “As I said to you yesterday, I am here for you, however you need me,” while James Marsters, who played Spike, tweeted “The Buffy set was not without challenges. I do not support abuse of any kind, and am heartbroken to learn of the experiences of some of the cast.” On a recent podcast, Marsters talked about how Whedon once confronted him because his character was supposed to be a villain and became a fan favourite instead. “I was terrified of Joss…I remember he backed me up against a wall one day and was like ‘I don’t care how popular you are, kid. You’re dead. You hear me? Dead. Dead!’ And I was like ‘Uh, it’s your football, man. Ok.'” (Marsters doesn’t get a total pass, though. He once admitted to writing a creepy song about Michelle Trachtenberg before she turned 18.)

-Speaking of Trachtenberg, her latest statement is the most damning so far. She edited her Instagram comment, saying there was a rule on the Buffy set that Joss Whedon was not allowed in a room alone with her. She starred on Buffy from the ages 14-17.

-This flew under the radar last year, but Buffy’s stunt coordinator and Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s stunt double (now a married couple) accused Whedon of threatening and surveilling them, and trying to manipulate them into breaking up.

Grant Gustin of The Flash is gonna be a papa.

-I don’t think there’s been a better socially distance press tour than the one for the latest To All The Boys movie. First they had Lana Condor and Noah Centineo do a reaction video to the movie, and now Netflix asked them to write “goodbye” letters to each other.

-Also the new movie, which dropped on Netflix today, is currently 71% fresh.

-Chapelle’s Show’ is returning to Netflix and this time it has Dave Chappelle’s blessing.

Jamie Dornan promoted Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mara with this very cute IG video.

Gina Carano announced a new movie project with Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire, which might be the most hilariously fast downgrade ever. She told Deadline, “They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.” Look, TPTB in Hollywood (not including the on camera talent) are notoriously conservative. She wasn’t fired for being conservative, she was fired because she refused to stop making the Disney/Lucasfilm brand look bad. They’re just responding to market research about what’s going to hurt their bottom line.

Jessica Rothe, Jack Kilmer and Michael K. Williams make money of people going to rehab in Body Brokers.

Billie Eilish Presses Pause

Billie-Eilish-Vanity-Fair

-In her new Vanity Fair cover story, Billie Eilish talks about over-enthusiastic fans (“When you’re excited about something, you forget boundaries and you forget what’s polite and what’s kind of not polite. I’ve had a lot of weird situations—people will kiss me and pick me up, spin me around”), and the intense scrutiny she’s under (“I thought that I would be the only one dealing with my hatred for my body, but I guess the internet also hates my body. So that’s great”).

I woke up in the morning naked in his bed.” A representative for Cohen denied the allegations “as absolutely false.” Cohen was previously accused of assault by his daughter and and a women who chose to remain anonymous.

-A live-action Harry Potter TV series is reportedly in early development at HBO Max. Great, another project to line JK Rowling’s pockets.

-Variety’s Actors on Actors interviews continue to hit it out of the park. Jamie Dornan and Eddie Redmayne recall their time as roommates, and — in what is the most surprisingly delightful pairing yetPete Davidson and Glenn Close talk about keeping movie costumes and her never winning an Oscar. “Is it better to be wheeled out in a wheelchair and get the lifetime achievement award? You don’t have to make a speech…It might be cool to never get one. I wouldn’t mind being wheeled out when I’m old and drooling, and I have a gray wig to cover my bald head.”

-This story about how power players in entertainment and media are hustling hard to get the vaccine before they’re supposed to is so deeply unsurprising.

Demi Lovato is going back to her comedy roots. She’s signed on to a new sitcom for NBC called Hungry.

This photo of Ben Affleck juggling all the online orders he placed in a pandemic haze is way too relatable.

-Ugh. As someone who works in social media, this is my worst nightmare: Jennifer Lopez tried to make her ‘Love Don’t Cost a Thing’ challenge go viral, and it flopped — mostly because we were all too busy creating Bernie memes. Plus, strolling on a beach and throwing away expensive things? In this climate??

-Meanwhile, ABC has delayed the return of Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, and A Million Little Things to March.

-I’ve previously only read a few historical romances but I was shocked by how dated Bridgerton seemed when I started reading the series before it debuted on Netflix. If those books are what people think romance novels are like, we’re in trouble. This piece nails it: “Yes, romance is having a moment, but it’s bittersweet for the most popular representation of our genre to be based on a series of books from two decades ago.” This list of Regency recommendations seems like a better reflection of what’s happening in the genre now.

Andy Samberg just released a commentary track for Palm Springs on Hulu. I’m actually surprised it took this long for streamers to get into DVD-style extras. I want blooper reels on everything!

-People are losing their minds over the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer. Sure.

Steven Yeun’s Big Year

Steven Yeun Variety

Steven Yeun is on the cover of Variety to promote his critically acclaimed new film Minari — which, for some reason, won’t compete in the Best Picture category at the Golden Globes and has been relegated to Foreign Language category, despite it being an American story set in America and made by an American director.

Prince William, Kate Middleton and their kids were reportedly spotted strolling with Prince Edward’s family — despite not being in the same covid bubble.

-This is an interesting look at why only a handful of celebs dominated this year’s media coverage. “With fewer people to photograph, almost every star was bound to get some traction just for stepping outside—and some say the stars have been cooperating to make it happen.”

-HBO Max is eyeing a Samantha-less Sex and The City revival. Don’t.

-This is a great examination of why J.K. Rowling‘s anti-trans stance shouldn’t be surprising. Her books are all about identifying/putting people in their place (wizards vs muggles, sorting hat, etc.) and she’s always seemed entrenched in her opinions, reluctant to allow much room for interpretation in her novels and “determined to map and describe every corner of her fictional world.”

-I missed the Eddie Izzard announcement but I love her and hope she’s happy.

Dominic West’s family holiday card is as awkward as you’d expect after the year he’s had.

The reviews for Netflix’s Bridgerton are glowing. “Frothy, silly escapism” is exactly what we need to ride out this craptastic year. Here’s hoping this leads to a wave of romance adaptations.

-This old ABC promo is blowing my mind.

Viola Davis and her husband take nightly baths together just to soak and talk—and sometimes she gives him facials. They have it all figured out.
