Emmys 2016 Best and Worst Dressed

The good greatly outweighed the bad at this year’s Emmy Awards, which was a lovely change of pace! Here’s my picks for the best and worst on the Emmy red carpet.

BEST

She came oh-so-close to crossing the line of “overwhelmed by too much material,” but The Good Place star Kristen Bell ultimately won me over with this dreamy, vacation-inspired Zuhair Murad gown.

Tatiana Maslaney keeps it sleek and simple in a stunning Alexander Wang dress.

I tend to not love pink and I am also usually not a fan of Marchesa, but leave it to Viola Davis to change my mind about both.

Unreal star Shiri Appleby is one of my favourite of the night in a slinky, fresh DVF.

It’s weird and quirky and I’m totally digging Maisie Williams’ Emmy dress, even though I can practically hear you all screaming at me about how much you hate it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s hard to make a giant belly bump work but damn if Kerry Washington doesn’t kill it.

I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve given Sarah Paulson praise for her red carpet style, but this green Prada is stunning.

WORST

Anna Chlumsky has made some fashion missteps in the past, but this is taking things to whole new levels of WTF.

Amy Poehler, I still love you but sometimes you make it so hard…

I actually dig Claire Dane‘s Schiaparelli gown, but the spray tan is ruining the entire look.

I wasn’t really feeling Amy Schumer‘s gown, but she gets points for responding to “Who are you wearing this evening?” with “Vivienne Westwood and Tom Ford shoes and an ob tampon.”

The only thing worse than Mandy Moore‘s terribly tiered sheer Prabal Gurung dress is her matching orange blush.

Gwendoline Christie’s dress is an ’80s prom dress nightmare.

Natalie Portman Wants You To Read Her Emails

natalie-portman-underwear

Natalie Portman and Jonathan Safran have emailed each other for more than a decade, and shared some of their correspondence in New York Times’ T magazine. Though they’re beyond pretentious, she’s definitely the one doing the heavy lifting in these chats — but it’s all weirdly undercut by the accompanying photos of her without pants. Sigh. So close, guys!

-Meanwhile, Portman is less interested about sharing emails with Ryan Seacrest.

Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult bonded for Equals by skateboarding at 4 a.m., late-night drinking in a bar and go-kart racing. The rest of us are in the wrong line of work, y’all.

Julie Klausner said Page Six lied about her comments about Gwyneth Paltrow — so they came back to her with a handful of receipts.

-Mr. Robot superfan Robert Downey Jr. interviews Rami Malek in the new issue of Interview.

-I’m pleasantly surprised by my lack Emmy rage blackouts today! Overall, this was a really good batch of nominations. I’m especially happy for all the love thrown at The Americans (usually shows this deep into their run of Emmy snubs can’t dig themselves out of it ), as well as the nods for Tatiana Maslany, Constance Zimmer, Better Call Saul, Maura Tierney and Catastrophe (for writing).  It wasn’t all perfect — I would have preferred  Christine Baranski over Emilia Clarke, Rachel Bloom over Laurie Metcalfe, Orange Is the New Black over House of Cards, Oscar Isaac over Cuba Gooding Jr, The Leftovers over Downton Abby,Justin Theroux over Kevin Spacey, and Jessica Jones over almost everything — but still, I’m happy with most of the major categories. I’m also thrilled that The Good Wife’s craptastic final season was totally shut out.

-Also good: for the first time in Emmy history, all six lead acting categories include nods for people of colour. (It’s not perfect, though: not a single supporting actor/actress of colour in a drama was nominated.)

-Bloodline’s Kyle Chandler found out about his nom while taking out the trash. (Which is what that show is. Amirite?)

Bryan Cranston’s talks about the iconic Breaking Bad “I am the one who knocks” scene.

Lea Michele and the Glee cast paid tribute to Cory Monteith yesterday on the third anniversary of his death.

Ariana Grande and Jimmy Fallon made a Snapchat music video, which is supposed to be a joke but seems too much like something that will eventually happen.

Reese Witherspoon won the internet yesterday with her Legally Blonde anniversary snaps.

Alicia Keys rounded up Beyoncé, Kevin Hart, Lenny Kravitz, Rihanna and more celebs for a powerful PSA.

Britney Spears just debuted a new song, “Private Show,” and she looks fantastic in the video.

-Happy Ghostbusters Eve! Enjoy this delightful new Seth Meyers interview with Kate McKinnon. (“My fondest wish is to live as Nick Offerman”), and this Kristen Wiig interview with Jimmy Fallon, in which she plays Bachelorette JoJo, despite knowing nothing about The Bachelorette .

Tom Hiddleston, Anna Kendrick, David Duchovny and more shared their celebrity pet peeves with Stephen Colbert.

-You can watch the terrifying first 8 minutes of Netflix’s new series Stranger Things.

The Hollars trailer, directed by John Krasinski and costarring Anna Kendrick and Margo Martindale, is designed to make you cry.

Emmys 2014: Best and Worst Dressed

Emmys 2014 fashion

Overall, I was pretty impressed by the Emmy red carpet. Maybe it was because the VMA fashions were so underwhelming, but I loved more Emmy looks than I hated. Of course, there were still some misses. Here are my five favourite and least favourite looks, and check out all the fashions in my MSN gallery.

BEST

Amy Poehler: This slinky Theia gown might be Amy’s career best to date. Eat your heart out, Will Arnett!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Simple and sleek, the Veep star was the picture of elegance in this Carolina Herrera pink dress (although the cameras made it look red).

Lizzy Caplan: There’s been a lot of chatter about how thin the Masters of Sex star looks lately, but that all disappeared the second she stepped onto the red carpet, looking like a goddess in this black Donna Karan Atelier gown with a flowing white back.

Julie Bowen: This Peter Som dress is pretty, but on her it’s a revelation when you consider all of her past fashion missteps.

Samira Wiley: It was a mixed bag for the Orange Is The New Black stars, but no one did it better than Poussey in this stunning yellow Christian Siriano dress.

WORST

Laura Prepon: Was this supposed to be ironic? Seriously, no one puts on this Gustavo Cadile dress and thinks “Yeah, I’m totally nailing it!”

Kerry Washington: I’m glad she was one of the few stars to not wear red, but this orange Prada was…not good. And the sparkly underwear beneath it wasn’t doing her any favours, either.

Mayim Bialik: It’s almost too easy to make fun of The Big Bang Theory’s style, but she was on a bit of a roll the past few red carpets, which makes this matronly look all the more heartbreaking.

Katherine Heigl: As I mentioned in my MSN gallery, this would have been a wonderful dress for someone like Glenn Close or Stockard Channing. But she’s 35! I guess she was trying to look presidential in honour of her new TV show, but this was a fail.

Michelle Monaghan: I’m a big fan of the True Detective star, but why did this Giambattista Valli Couture silk gown have sleeves?
