Jessica Chastain, Constance Wu and Ava Duvernay Lead the Charge on Change

Jessica Chastain, Constance Wu and Ava Duvernay

Jessica Chastain, Constance Wu and Ava Duvernay cover Marie Claire, where they talk about the importance of inclusion and representation, and learning how to not obsess about accommodating others.

-Sad news for for those of you who even knew they were dating: Rita Ora and Andrew Garfield split up.

Kit Harrington told Stephen Colbert about the end of Game of Thrones: “I was very shocked and surprised at certain events unfolding, and then I blubbed my eyes out. I cried.”

-I’ve watched this clip of Jennifer Hudson and Tom Jones spontaneously singing at each other more times than can be considered normal.

Keri Russell and Adam Driver (who are costarring on Broadway) are so damn funny and charming in this NYT profile.

-You can tell Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson have done a few movies together by this point; their chemistry is really easy going and nice. The Captain Marvel pair sang Ariana Grande and took a lie detector test on Carpool Karaoke.

-Also, Larson and Jackson sang “Shallow” on The Jonathan Ross Show and they were pretty damn great.

Heidi Montag defended The Hills reboot’s lack of diversity by pointing out her co-stars’ hair colours. So that happened.

-Also, I keep forgetting that Mischa Barton is in this thing.

Gwyneth Paltrow says that her persona shift from a whiskey-drinking, cigarette-smoking cool girl to a health nut had everyone “thinking I was a crackpot.” Who is this whiskey-drinking badass she’s speaking of?

-Not surprisingly, Idris Elba‘s Netflix comedy about a DJ-turned-nanny isn’t getting glowing reviews. I want more for him than this. (And I definitely want more for him than taking over Will Smith’s role in Suicide Squad.)

-HBO’s The Case Against Adnan Syed will follow Amy Syed’s process of seeking and winning an appeal post-Serial.

-I liked this piece a lot about how Steven Spielberg isn’t right about Netflix — but he’s not entirely wrong either. I’ve been surprised by they lack of debate and the full-throated support of Netflix (who does some not great stuff). At the very least, they *should* disclose their box office numbers if they want to be Oscar contenders.

-Oh my goodness, the Good Omens trailer is all kinds of fun.

-I very much enjoyed this look back at Julia Roberts’ “Fellini summer”, a dramatic few months which included leaving fiance Kiefer Sutherland for Jason Patric, fighting with Steven Spielberg on Hook, being hospitalized for the “flu”, and walking away from Shakespeare in Love.

-You know, I’ve been pretty checked out on Arrow for a while and mostly just catch up with it out of routine these days, but compiling all these cast and fan social media posts about the show’s ending for this story hit me harder than I thought it would, especially Stephen Amell‘s tearful Facebook video. There were seasons when I LOVED this show, and I’m glad it’s getting to go out on its own terms.

-Meanwhile, I’m thinking this TV blind item from a while ago was probably about Amell.

-The trailer for Mindy Kaling’s Late Night starring Emma Thompson is everything I’ve ever wanted.

Steve Carell Surprises Jenna Fischer for Her Birthday

-Jenna Fischer was a guest on Busy Philipps‘ show last night and Steve Carell surprised her for her birthday. Yeah, this got me right in the heart guts.

Ben Affleck and ex-girlfriend Lindsay Shookus have reunited.

Ellen Page is urging people to remember that hate crimes are not a hoax, and people should not to lose sight of the endemic violence against underrepresented communities.

-She’s done it again! Survivor superfan Sia surprised a Survivor contestant with a $14,000 cheque. This is the third time she’s gifted one of her favourite contestants with $$.

Will Smith has a new series on Facebook Watch called Will Smith’s Bucket List, a reality/challenge show. In the six-episode weekly series, the actor will travel the globe, checking off bucket list adventures like starring in a Bollywood movie, skydiving in Dubai, and performing stand-up with Dave Chappelle.

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell are not great at guessing games.

Idris Elba has no intention of giving up his “Sexiest Man Alive” title. Change approved!

Adam Rippon tested a variety of celeb rosé and he found Brangelina’s Mirval too sweet so I trust nothing he says.

-Better Things returns tonight and the reviews suggest this season is even better than the previous two. I’m not sure how that’s possible. (I rewatch this dance scene at least once a month. And this scene when Max’s dad bails on her graduation and everyone steps up? *sob*)

-Ok, this story may feel too industry insider-y, but stay with me cause it’s huge: Fox was just rocked by one of the biggest financial penalties in TV history ($179 million) after an arbitrator concluded top Fox execs gave false testimony to cover up their “reprehensible” fraud regarding the TV show Bones. The arbitrator said Fox executives lied, cheated and committed fraud at the expense of the show’s stars (David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel), executive producer producer Barry Josephson and author Kathy Reichs (whose novels the series was based on), who had filed a lawsuit claiming they were cheated out of their rightful profit participation. Thanks to Fox’s distribution/streaming deals (including a “sweetheart” deal with Hulu, which Fox had a 30% stake in), the procedural drama took in nearly half a billion dollars in its first seven seasons — but Fox deemed the show to be a money loser, which meant the cast, EP and author got no profit share. So instead of licensing Bones’ streaming rights for fair value, Fox’s studio dept was basically giving it away to Fox’s distribution dept. “The obvious inferences of self-dealing, conflict of interest and the lack of any arm’s length negotiations leap off the page,” the arbitrator concluded. Not only is this ruling expected to alter the economics of hit shows in the streaming era, it also leaves Hulu’s fate uncertain. And with new streaming services coming from Disney, Warner and NBC, it’ll be interesting to see what “fair market value” they’ll now be expected to pay for the past seasons their own studio’s shows.

The Four Weddings and a Funeral cast reunite in the first trailer for their Red Nose Day special.

-Fox has officially ordered a 6-episode 90210 “revival” starring Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. (Luke Perry might appear as a guest star.)

-Netflix UK accidentally streamed The Notebook with all alternate bummer ending, and people freaked.

-Hmmm…I’m not sure I’m loving Brie Larson’s dress at the Captain Marvel premiere. That cut makes it look like it’s falling off.

Taylor Swift fans are going crazy with theories about when her next album will drop. She seems to think it’s hilarious.

-Every new trailer for Little makes me fall more and more in love with it.

Best and Worst Dressed at the 2019 Oscars

With its lack of host, endless organizational stumbles and too-close-to-call categories, no one really knew what to expect from the 2019 Oscars. But it turns out the big surprises came on the red carpet. It was a night filled with whimsy, colour, ruffles, shapes – and SO MUCH HOT PINK. Check out our picks for the best and worst looks of the night at the 91st annual Academy Awards:

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2019 OSCARS:

Jen: I thought Jennifer Lopez was going to be my favourite metallic look of the night until I saw Brie Larson‘s outfit, which I think edges out JLo’s because there’s clear strategy behind it. This is exactly what Larson needed to do before her big debut as Captain Marvel: look great but also like a goddamn superhero who can kick anyone’s ass. She rises to the task with this sexy, slinky Celine that fits her like armour. Take that, haters!

Nicole: Emma Stone’s Louis Vuitton gown is elegant and sculptural, with sleeves that look like tiny wings and sequined material that clings to her. I love that the sequins are layered so they didn’t lay flat. It fits perfectly and she keeps her accessories and makeup to a minimum to let the gown do all the work. It a bit of a weird look which is appropriate given the film she’s nominated for (The Favourite, which is also lovely and weird) and it feels like a grown-up choice. Love.

Jen: Yellow is a hard look to pull off on the carpet, but when it works it’s spectacular. Constance Wu‘s marigold Versace gives me memories of Michelle Williams’ iconic Vera Wang moment during Brokeback Mountain’s year and I heart it.

Nicole: I adore Rachel Weisz’s Givenchy gown. It’s a conventionally pretty gown with a flowing skirt – and then it’s topped with A HOT RED PLEATHER CROP TOP. God, I love writing those words. I’m on a real red tear right now so this immediately plays to my style obsession, plus the contrast of materials both in texture and shape make this such a daring and cool choice. She keeps her accessories tone-on-tone, opting for a black manicure and simple makeup. The headband brings the whole look back to feminine. Again, this weird gown feels wildly appropriate given the film she’s nominated for.

Jen: When I first saw Amy Adams I was disappointed by the colour because it felt too bridal and boring to me. But every time I caught another glimpse of her Versace dress, I feel more and more in love. I still wish it was in a brighter hue (paired with a stronger lip), but the fit is impeccable and it photographs SO well.

Nicole: Oh my god, Sarah Paulson in Brandon Maxwell is so awesome (I was going to write weird, but I have to stop calling all these amazing gowns weird). It’s the colour of the night and the shape is both unconventional and voluminous but also immensely flattering. Sarah is styled by Karla Welch, who often takes calculated risks with her clients (see also Tracee Ellis Ross in the same colour and volume of dress several times this year), however although she’s really pulled towards this colour and shape for her clients, this is one of the best iterations because it manages to be super interesting and lovely.

Jen: Pink was the surprise colour of the night, but IMO no one did it better than Gemma Chan in Valentino. Unlike Linda Cardellini‘s fuschia moment, Gemma’s wearing the dress instead of the dress wearing her. I think you have to be a “fashion” girl to really pull this off, and no one has been rocking couture this awards season as well Gemma. Plus it looks really comfortable and it has pockets (and she was using it to hide COOKIES!!), which always gets bonus points from me!

Nicole: Helen Mirren is so hot in this simple, flowing, vibrant pink Schiaparelli gown with a tulle overlay. It’s feminine, fresh and pretty. I’m not sure why people on social media were going after her makeup – I was so happy to see a bright lip on the red carpet. *sets out fuchsia lipstick for tomorrow*

Jen: Billy Porter hosted the Oscar red carpet preshow but he stole the entire show in this in voluminous Christian Siriano number. I could watch him spin all night long. Werrkkk!

Nicole: When I first saw Angela Bassett on the red carpet, I wrote “wowza” in my notes. I adore the structure of this fuchsia Reem Acra gown and although I wish the material looked less wrinkled, the shape is immensely flattering, the flowing low pony is so feminine and she looks every inch a goddess.

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2019 OSCARS:

Nicole: Glenn Close actually looks like she is wearing a 42lb gown – which she is. I feel like this Carolina Herrera gown is heavy, not at all flattering and it comes across like she is trying way too hard. When I think about Helen Mirren’s simple and flattering gown and hold the two side by side, Glenn looks overwhelmed. I guess 4 million beads will do that to a woman.

Jen: I had high, high expectations for Lady Gaga – if only because I assumed she would bring the weirdness. So imagine my disappointment when she showed up in this understated, underwhelming McQueen, with oddly jutting hips as its only distinguishing feature. She doesn’t even give us a bold red lip! At least the infamous Tiffany necklace is stunning.

Nicole: I actually like Melissa McCarthy’s Brandon Maxwell… outfit? I mean, I can’t call it a gown because IT’S PANTS. At the Academy Awards. I was a bit heartbroken because otherwise the shape is perfect, the colour suits her and the cape is amazing!

Jen: If Gemma Chan is my fave pink look of the night, then Kacey Musgraves is my least fave. She gets lost in this fluffy, cotton candy coloured mess of a Giambattista Valli gown. Tiered tulle is nobody’s friend.

Nicole: I want to love Charlize Theron’s Dior gown but damn. Although it highlights her tall, lean shape, the open back is not flattering and her whole (I’m guessing?) braless situation does not work. I also feel like the colour is doing her no favours. At least there isn’t a weird back strap on her dress like Irina Shayk’s. So there’s that.

Jen: No other nominee had a fairy tale narrative like Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio – but that doesn’t mean she had to dress like a princess. I wanted so much for her…and this Rodarte wasn’t it.
