Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue Made Some Choices

vanity fair hollywood issue - 8 covers

-The Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue came out today and everyone’s dunking on Nicole Kidman’s cover, but I dunno. It’s overly photoshopped but if I look like anything even remotely that when I’m 54 I’ll weep with joy. Personally, I have more questions about Benedict Cumberbatch‘s milk bath with swans.

-There’s also a cute video in which the 8 cover subjects answer 8 questions about their careers.

-Also in the issue, Kristen Stewart talks about working on a TV show with her screenwriter fiancée Dylan Meyer: “We discovered a superbrain.”

-In the new issue of Interview, Alexander Skarsgård talks to Kirsten Dunst about his role in the new viking saga The Northman.

-Oh, this is rich. When asked about Taylor Swift‘s new version of “Red” in his Esquire profileJake Gyllenhaal said he hasn’t listened to it but added, “That begs for a deeper philosophical question. Not about any individual, per se, but a conversation that allows us to examine how we can—or should, even—take responsibility for what we put into the world, our contributions into the world. How do we provoke a conversation? We see that in politics. There’s anger and divisiveness, and it’s literally life-threatening in the extreme.” Sir, she wrote about her dad comforting her when you skipped her birthday party. If you want to talk about taking responsibility for what we put out in the world, let’s chat about the nightmares I had after watching Nightcrawler, mmm-ok?

This interview with HBO/Max’s Casey Bloys is good, mostly because he says he’s not just interested in doing reboots (despite there being talk of Six Feet Under and True Blood revivals). “I just want to point out that if you look at the last year, between Mare of Easttown, The White Lotus and Succession and Insecure and now Euphoria and Gilded Age and going into Winning Time, there’s no reboots. In most those cases, they weren’t based on existing IP. I do want to take a moment to make clear that we don’t spend our days thinking about what to reboot because it’s a tricky business bringing a show back.”

This is a good piece on how Kanye West’s behavior towards Kim Kardashian should not be covered as romantic or gossip fodder. “It’s objectively disgusting to read defenses of Kardashian with qualifiers like, ‘I don’t like Kim, but…’ — Your opinion on Kardashian does not matter. What does matter is your opinion on intimate partner violence, of which stalking is one. A man stalking their partner who is trying to leave is unacceptable.”

Prince Andrew just bought his way out of trouble. He reached an out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who says she was forced by his longtime friend, Jeffrey Epstein, to have sex with the royal while she was a minor. The amount of the settlement is undisclosed. Andrew will also be making a “substantial” donation to Giuffre’s charity in support of victims’ rights.

Kanye West took to Instagram for apologize for posting screenshots of his text exchanges with Kim Kardashian. “I know sharing screen shots was jarring and came off as harassing Kim. Give people something to talk about. Do your fucking service, do your job.”

-I love this story: Johnny Greenwood says that when he first joined Radiohead, he only pretended to play keyboards. “The first thing I did was make sure my keyboard was turned off … [The other guys] made quite a racket, quite a noise. It was all guitars and distortion — and so I would pretend to play for weeks on end and Thom would say, ‘I can’t quite hear what you’re doing, but I think you’re adding a really interesting texture because I can tell when you’re not playing.’ And I’m thinking, ‘No, you can’t, because I’m really not playing.’ And I’d go home in the evening and work out how to actually play chords and cautiously over the next few months, I would start turning this keyboard up.”

-I’m not hearing a lot of buzz about The Gilded Age, but HBO has already renewed it for season two.
