Ansel Elgort’s Very Bad Day

Ansel Elgort is trending in response to an Instagram post which appears to accuse the actor of making racial slurs in high school, and a Tweet from a woman who claims he sexually assaulted her when she was 17.

-Remember his really odd GQ interview from a few years back? “Girls love it when you have some weird nerdy thing in your room. It makes you look less threatening, even though I’m, like, very threatening. I’m the most threatening guy ever.”

-In this Nicole Beharie interview in the NYT, she talks about how Sleepy Hollow mistreated her. “My co-star and I both got sick at the same time with the same illness and had different treatments. He was allowed to go on leave for a month and I had to continue working.” She was forced to work through it and ended up developing the autoimmune condition C. difficile. I remember loving the first season and being outraged that she, the co-lead, was clearly being punted to the background in favour of a white woman in the later seasons. She added, “Sometimes I think that some people I was working with didn’t like that I was unwell but loved by the audience. I would think they’d support that. But everyone of color on that show was seen as expendable and eventually let go. I tried to get work afterwards and people were like, “We heard you were difficult.” But no one can say I was late or unprofessional or negative.”

-During an interview on Watch What Happens Live, former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay spoke about her experience as the first Black lead of a show in the Bachelor franchise: “I did have a racist contestant on my season.”

Taylor Swift is speaking out again, this time to say Juneteenth should be a national holiday.

Gabrielle Union claims that her agent was threatened after she spoke out about the working conditions on America’s Got Talent.

-The Friends reunion special is now expected to film in August. I honestly can’t imagine how they’re going ahead with this when we’ve spent the last three months drowning in reunions for charity.

Will Smith joined wife Jada Pinkett Smith for an honest Father’s Day talk on Red Table Talk. “The idea being that just because a man might not be the best husband, does not mean he isn’t a good father.”

-Mr. Malcolm’s List, a diverse regency-era drama which first debuted as a short film from director/producer Emma Holly Jones earlier this year, will be expanded into a feature-length movie starring Constance Wu and Sam Heughan. Gemma Chan, Sope Dirisu, and Freida Pinto starred in the original short, which is a DELIGHT.

-AMC’s CEO said yesterday that the theatre chain won’t be enforcing mask-wearing when they reopen in July because they “did not want to be drawn into a political controversy.” They quickly reversed their decision following the backlash, but if they’re letting people take their masks off to eat, I can’t imagine it’ll be enforced.

Cardi B’s Sam Smith “remix” is hilarious — and a million times better than the original.

Noname responded to J. Cole in a new track.

-This is a very interesting take on how Love, Victor, a 10-episode Hulu spin-off of the 2018 film Love Simon, is caught up in the mythology of white gayness.

Sir Ian Holm, known for roles in Lord of the Rings and Alien, has died at age 88 following a battle with Parkinson’s disease. I’l always rememeber him from The Sweet Hereafter.

Jimmy Kimmel is taking the summer off to “spend even more time” with his family. His longtime frenemy Matt Damon helped him make the announcement.

The Tenet Promo Train Chugs On

-Promo for Tenet is continuing as if the movie will still open next month, with John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki interviewed by EW. (From the photos I assumed they were nowhere near each other during the cover shoot but the video suggests otherwise.)

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves opened up about their philanthropic work to help students in need in the new issue of Town & Country.

-Lots of baby news today: Michelle Williams and Thomas Kail have welcomed their first child together.

Kristen Wiig and fiancé Avi Rothman welcomed twins via surrogate earlier this year.

-In other happy news, Raven-Symone married Miranda Maday in a surprise ceremony today.

-I didn’t think it would happen but here we are: Danny Masterson of That ’70s Show and The Ranch has been charged with raping three women at his home between 2001 and 2003. He is maintaining his innocence. Leah Remini, who put a spotlight on the accusations by interviewing the women on her show last summer, reacted on Twitter, saying “This is just the beginning Scientology, your days of getting away with it is coming to an end!”

Jennifer Lawrence joined Twitter to issue a statement about the death of Breonna Taylor.

Lonnie Chavis, one of the child stars of This Is Us, has written an essay in People about the experience of growing up Black.

Angelina Jolie penned an emotional piece about the refugee crisis for Time.

-Glad to see I’m not the only one who think the CW’s new blocking trolls policy is too little, too late. I noticed the Candice Patton hate from trolls since the second she was cast, and I didn’t even follow The Flash fandom. I was more tuned into Arrow’s and saw replies to the official accounts that were absolutely brutal to Emily Bett Rickards. It also extends to how CW actress’ roles are written.

-Ah poop. Racist tweets from Megan Amram have surfaced. She apologized but jeez that’s a bad look.

-Sopranos star James Gandolfini once said he was ready to “beat the f**k out” of Harvey Weinstein. Of only.

Fiona Apple is donating all proceeds from TV and movie placements for two songs from her new album to charity for the next two years. Royalties from “Shameika” will go to the Harlem Children’s Zone, while the “Heavy Balloons” proceeds will go to Seeding Sovereignty. Showrunners and music supervisors should stick these songs in everywhere. I don’t want to turn on a TV show or watch a movie trailer without hearing “Shameika said I had potential!”

-A spinoff of Daria has just been ordered, which makes my Gen X heart happy.

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly appear to be going strong – they’re now Instagram official.

Lady Gaga was out shopping with her boyfriend and didn’t want to pose with a fan for a photo (understandable) so she gave the fan her leather jacket off her back instead.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is heading to Hungary for reshoots.

Bryce Dallas Howard makes her feature directorial debut with her new Apple+ documentary, Dads, which features Will Smith, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Neil Patrick Harris, Judd Apatow and more.

Kristen Stewart’s Royal Role

Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in a new movie which is…hard to imagine. I actually really like Stewart as an actress but she seems to bring a very specific, twitchy energy to every role, whether it’s Personal Shopper or Charlie’s Angels.

Gwyneth Paltrow plugged her new ‘Smells Like My Orgasm’ candle on Fallon — with help from her 14-year-old son Moses.

-In this week’s People, Tyler Perry penned an essay about racial injustice. He narrates a recorded version for 8 min & 46 seconds — the exact length of time Derek Chauvin used a knee to pin George Floyd by the neck as he died.

-Screenshots are circulating from a private Facebook group in which a black film editor posted about looking to connect with other black editors, and a bunch of well-known white editors immediately called foul.

J. Cole released a new song on Tuesday, which contains verses that many interpret as taking aim at Chicago rapper and activist Noname. It is all very tone policing. “When I see something that’s valid, I listen/But s**t, it’s something about the queen tone that’s botherin’ me” and “Instead of conveying you holier, come help get us up to speed.” He responded to the backlash by tweeting that he stands by his lyrics, but also encouraged fans to follow Noname: “I love and honor her as a leader in these times.”

Chance the Rapper also weighed in, tweeting: “They both my peoples but only one of them put out a whole song talking about how the other needs to reconsider their tone and attitude in order to save the world. It’s not constructive and undermines all the work Noname has done. It’s not BWs job to spoon feed us. We grown”

-The Bold and the Beautiful headed back into production today and the safety measures are wild, including using actors’ real-life partners as stand-ins for intimate scenes.

-With all that’s been going on, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a public #MeToo-ing but that’s what happened last night to Chris D’Elia. The comedian (who, ironically, played a predator in the second season of You) was the subject of a series of Twitter threads from women who say he behaved inappropriately with them. Multiple young women shared screenshots of him apparently sliding into their DMs and trying to arrange meetups when they were still in their teens.

D’Elia responded with a statement to TMZ: “I have said and done things that might have offended people during my career, but I have never knowingly pursued any underage women at any point. All of my relationships have been both legal and consensual and I have never met or exchanged any inappropriate photos with the people who have tweeted about me. That being said, I really am truly sorry. I was a dumb guy who ABSOLUTELY let myself get caught up in my lifestyle. That’s MY fault. I own it. I’ve been reflecting on this for some time now and I promise I will continue to do better.”

-Comic book writer Warren Ellis is also coming under fire on Twitter for his interactions with women.

-The CW released a committment to making their social pages safe and free of harassment for fans and talent. Which is great — but Candice Patton has been receiving online harassment and threats for 6 years and they did nothing.

-This is a very good piece on how some Hollywood TV studios drastically cut the pay of lowest-level assistants & support staff after the pandemic hit. Last week, at least 15 showrunners at WBTV banded together to fight for them, but the recent cuts to assistants’ pay particularly rankled employees who used to work with Andrew Kreisberg, who was fired from The CW in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment — and was paid nearly $10 million by Warner Bros after he was let go.

Ted Danson gushing about Schitt’s Creek to Annie Murphy during an Emmys roundtable is so heart healing.

-In another Emmys roundtablePatrick Stewart revealed he was not high on Gene Roddenberry’s list to star on Star Trek: “Somewhere in the cellar of Paramount Pictures, there’s a Post-it note which says, ‘I do not want to hear Patrick Stewart’s name mentioned again ever!’ ”

Joe Cornish says he’s met up with John Boyega to talk ideas for an Attack The Block sequel. Don’t tease me!!

-This is a good look back at how New Girl mastered the art of the slow burn with Nick and Jess.  (I think they eventually screwed up that relationship, but the beginning was perfection.)

-The National Book Critics Circle has imploded. More than half of the board has resigned in a series of events one member described as “bizarre and bloody in an end-of-a-Tarantino-movie way.”

A teen romance about a guy who’s so beautiful he has to keep his face under wraps? Sure.
