Viola Davis Gives Powerful Speech at Women’s March

-Celebrities joined the women’s march on Saturday and offered some rousing speeches. Scarlett Johansson (not a particularly unproblematic spokesperson but ok) talked about gender equality, Halsey wrote a gutting poem, and Viola Davis brought the roof down.

-On the day when hundreds and thousands of women took to the streets, Ciara shared a video that tells women how to find a husband. Gross.

-Every time Jennifer Garner calls her Alias costar Victor Garberspy daddy,” I get a little choked up.

-Oh. My. God. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are bringing the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows to the small screen. This is incredible news.

-It was a weekend of famous dudes that I didn’t even know were in a relationship getting engaged. Ed Sheeran debuted his new relationship status on Instagram, and Darren Criss popped the question to Mia Swier.

Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis will announce the Oscar nominations tomorrow. Uh oh. Does this mean she isn’t getting one? Because that seems to be the trend with announcers lately.

Tracee Ellis Ross clarified her Blackish salary dispute, and seems to dispel the rumours that she threatened to cut back on her hours.

-If Stranger Things star David Harbour wants to dance with penguins, then internet, we need to make that happen!

Olivia Munn texted Anna Faris to make it clear that she’s not dating Chris Pratt, despite what the tabloids say.

-The Stark sisters are sticking together IRL. Maisie Williams is going to be Sophie Turner’s bridesmaid.

-On the SAG Awards red carpet, Alison Brie addressed the allegations of sexual misconduct made against her brother-in-law, James Franco by saying: “I think that above all what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone that feels victimized should and does have the right to speak out and come forward.”  So good! If she had stopped it right there, it would have been perfect. But then she had to go and add “not everything that’s been reported has been accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information.”

-Speaking of stars I like putting their foot in their mouth, William H Macy said at the SAGs: “It’s hard to be a man these days. I think a lot of us feel like we’re under attack and that we need to apologize, and perhaps we do.” He goes on to talk about what men can do as part of the Times Up movement, but that first part…yeesh.

-It turns out it was Lily Tomlin that Morgan Freeman was calling out at the start of his SAG speech.  I thought he was reprimanding someone for being on the phone or something.

Alexander Skarsgård brought his longtime BFF Jack McBrayer as his SAG Awards date. I didn’t know these guys were buddies, and now I’m obsessed with how that possibly came to be.

-Also, Skarsgård may be in the second season of Big Little Lies (which makes no sense).

Nick Offerman has no use for your Ron Swanson parody account.

-Some hits are starting to emerge from Sundance already. I love that The Miseducation of Cameron Post is getting such raves because that book was wonderful. Lizzie is also sparking buzz, possibly because Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny have hot barn sex and axe-murder a man together.

-This is a really good piece on how some of the pop culture romances we loved when we were young actually glorify or excuse predatory male behaviour.

-The Resident, Fox’s new medical drama starring Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp, debuted last night — but all anyone is talking about today is how one of the show’s staff writers managed to get a job there since he was investigated for sexual harassment on his two most recent shows, The Night Shift and Code Black.

-There’s a new Wrinkle in Time trailer. The more I see of this thing, the more I can’t wait!

The Golden Globes 2018 Red Carpet Makes A Statement with #TimesUp

This was the most unusual red carpet I’ve ever seen in my 10+ years of covering award shows. Every nominee and major star who walked the red carpet wore black in support of the #TimesUp movement in an effort to bring awareness to the cause. And that was great. As was the amount of famous women who brought activists  as their dates (a move that was reportedly led by Michelle Williams).

But it wasn’t without frustrations. As I worried about before the show, talking about fashion at all seemed to be frowned about — despite all the hard work the designers and stylists put into helping the stars make this statement. (This thread from the Go Fug Yourself ladies covers it more eloquently than I ever could.) And most frustratingly, the women seemed to be the only ones being asked about #TimesUp movement, putting the burden of solidarity totally on them, while men got the typical questions about their nominations and roles, which further made the movement seem more symbolic than transformative.

That being said, fashion-wise this might have been one of the best red carpets we’ve seen in a while. Perhaps because the gowns were all black, there seemed to be more focus on impeccable tailoring and stunning accents & accessories. Here are my 10 favourites of the night:

Saoirse Ronan has been knocking it out of the park during her Lady Bird press tour and at the start of this awards show circuit with her dedication to mixing it up and keeping it fresh. She looks sleek and cool in Atelier Versace.

Speaking of sleek and cool, this is a great look for Jessica Chastain. Her Armani Prive fit her like a glove.

Pants was a big theme of the night, whether it was skirts over pants (Christina Hendricks, Alison Brie) or just a straight up lady suit. I don’t think anyone did it better than The Handsmaid’s Tale star Alexis Bledel in Oscar de la Renta.

Gawd, is there anyone cooler than Tracee Ellis Ross? The black dress code didn’t stop her from serving up a whole lotta look in Marc Jacobs.

I usually find Dakota Johnson a snoozefest at these things, but the back of her Gucci gown was stunning.

Gal Gadot is all business in a Tom Ford column dress and blazer. I felt like the slit was a slightly awkward length, but she still made it work.

Insecure’s Issa Rae takes a dramatic plunge in this stunning Prabal Gurung gown with perfectly paired Lorraine Schwartz accessories.

Allison Janney proved black doesn’t have to mean boring in this in Mario Dice with daring cutouts.

Viola Davis was her usual stunning self. She’s pretty much the only person who can wear valor and still make me love it.

Allison Williams stretched the black dress code further than most in this Armani Prive with a colourful bodice.

Chrissy Teigen Opens Up About Postpartum Depression, Egg Freezing

Chrissy Teigen In Style IVF

Chrissy Teigen is on the cover of InStyle, in which she reveals that she and John Legend are looking to add one more child to their family via IVF.

-I’m going away for a week and I’m really starting to worry that I’m going to miss more of the SATC cast dragging each other. The latest is Kim Cattrall saying of Sarah Jessica Parker: “I don’t know what her issue is. I never have,” and says her relationship with her costars was “toxic.”

Jimmy Kimmel continues to kill it with his monologues. In his latest, he says he has no time for those who claim it’s too soon to talk about gun legislation.

-When I read The Goldfinch, I was not picturing Ansel Elgort as Theo.

Gabrielle Union spoke out about her fertility struggles, admitting ‘I’ve had 8 or 9 miscarriages.’

Viola Davis and Larry Wilmore are teaming up for a new show on ABC called Black Don’t Crack, written by Insecure producer Regina Hicks. My god, that entire sentence is glorious!

-Add Brooke Shields to the list of women with creepy Trump stories. She says he called her right after his divorce saying “I really think we should date because you’re America’s Sweetheart and I’m America’s Richest Man.”

-Glee’s Mark Salling pleaded guilty to child porn possession and will serve 4-7 years in prison.

Sam Smith is dating the guy who played one of the jocks in 13 Reasons Why and I love it so much.

Jenny Slate may join Michelle Williams and Tom Hardy in the superhero flick, Venom.  This thing just gets better and better.

-The Real Housewives have a bad rep, but Bethany Frankel chartered four planes filled with supplies and EMT and sent them to Puerto Rico.

-There’s lots of talk about ABC’s new shows getting soft ratings last night, but The Mayor was up against This Is Us and still managed to  nearly double its timeslot comedy competition and tied CBS’s Bull among A18-49 at 9:30 p.m, while retaining 80% of  its lead-in.

-Here’s the first U.S. trailer for B.P.M., which dramatizes AIDS activism in early 1990s Paris. This got raves at Cannes and TIFF.

-Is it weird that I’m disappointed that Kate Winslet is working with James Cameron again? Cause I kinda am.

-It doesn’t help that I’m already disappointed in her for doing Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel, which just dropped its first trailer.
