Tina Fey’s Sheetcaking Skit Stirs Controversy

Tina Fey appeared on the Weekend Update special last night and urged people to ignore the neo-Nazis, stay safe inside and eat some sheetcake. The reactions to it were swift and judge-y. Personally I didn’t love it either, but then again I tend to sideeye some of her race-based comedy bits to begin with. I usually LOVE Fey (I’ve re-read Bossypants so many times I can quote parts of it), but there has definitely been things she’s done on Kimmy Schmidt or Whisky Tango Foxtrot that aren’t great. So I understand why people are arguing that the suggestion from a white woman to ignore neo-nazis is kind of what got us into this mess in the first place. On the other hand, a lot of people think she was gently winking and mocking her own message (with the sheetcake being a spin on “let them eat cake”). It’s entirely possible, but maybe now is not the week for subtle, easily misinterpreted comedy?

Taylor Swift just went dark on social media, leading to speculation that she’s about to make a big announcement (a new album, maybe?). She wiped all profile pics from her Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram accounts, and she’s no longer following anyone on Twitter.

-I’ve listened to Justin Bieber’s new song four times today. I’m not proud.

-I also really like Miley Cyrus’ new song. It’s like my music tastes are Benjamin Buttoning.

-Speaking of ladies making bank, Emma Stone is 2017’s highest-paid actress, according to Forbes. Next in line  are Jennifer Aniston, who pulled in $25.5 million, and Jennifer Lawrence, who earned $24 million.

-Luke Cage explains Danny Rand’s white privilege to him in this scene in The Defenders and it’s amazing. Here’s the backstory.

-Meanwhile, the reviews of The Defenders are mixed at best. THR likes it, but Vulture calls it “a grim slog” and the NYT says it’s “less than the sum of its superheroes.”

James Corden started his show with an emotional monologue about the Barcelona attack.

-Your internet boyfriend Idris Elba is on crutches. Who wants to volunteer to play nurse? Ok fine, I’ll do it!

-I gave up on Transparent a while ago but somehow came across this clip today of Judith Light singing “Hand In My Pocket” and ended up bawling at my desk. So, that happened.

Emilia Clarke shared a cute Instagram video of Kit Harington and it almost made it seem like he has a personality!

Kal Penn putting Trump on blast is the best use of Twitter this week.

Blake Lively‘s photoshop skills are on point.

Cobie Smulders, Justin Long and John Cho star in the Literally, Right Before Aaron trailer.

Sofia Vergara Poses Nude for Women’s Health

Sofia Vergara stripped down for Women’s Health’s Naked Issue — and looks amazing. She said, “Here’s a woman, 45, being able to show her body. It’s not like before, when it was just young girls who would make the cover of a magazine.”

-Whoa – Vanity Fair just clapped back at Angelina Jolie. Her lawyers tried to get them to print a retraction to the part of her cover story which describes the cruel casting process of her new movie, which Jolie later claimed they took out of context. VF responded with the exact damaging quote, which they confirmed the reporter had captured on not one, but two recording devices. For someone who’s usually so on top of it, this is a major misstep for her.

-I don’t watch the Real Housewives of NYC but everyone on my Twitter TL has lots of opinions about LuAnn’s divorce.

-I haven’t had a chance to read all of Aziz Anzari’s GQ profile, though I did read the part about him quitting the internet.

-Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later starts streaming tomorrow (just in time for the long weekend!), and the reviews are great.

Natalie Portman‘s sci-fi film Annihilation just got a 2018 release date. I’m a little concerned that’s it’ll be in the wasteland that is February, but it costars Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac so I’m still here for it.

-It was NBC’s turn at the TCAs today. They confirmed that they’ve already picked up the Will & Grace reboot for a second season even though the first hasn’t aired yet, announced that Tina Fey will be starring in seven episodes of the next season of Great News, touted a plan to foster female directors in their quest for gender parity (sounds nice, but I want to know more about how they’ll implement it), the president of the network threw out some incredibly impressive rating numbers (26 million people watch This Is Us per episode on all platforms?! And they claim they’re able to monetize digital?!), and for some reason they still seem to think that the mystery of Jack’s death is why everyone watches This Is Us.

-Speaking of the TCAs, here’s a recap of yesterday’s Everwood reunion. *sob*

Jessica Chastain called out CBS over the lack of female leads in new fall series.

Iwan Rheon’s appearance on Kimmel reminded me of his character on Misfits instead of his character on Game of Thrones, which can only be a good thing.

-Here’s Margot Robbie and Domhnall Gleeson in the Goodbye Christopher Robin trailer. If this is  based on the true origin story of Winnie the Pooh, then that national heritage commercial may have led us astray…

Tina Fey Opens Up to David Letterman for THR

tina-fey-david-letterman

Tina Fey was interviewed by David Letterman for the latest issue of THR and it’s great. She talks about her fear of artists becoming Leni Riefenstahl, offers her take on Donald Trump getting into a Twitter war with Alec Baldwin (“You think you’re good at being a jerk on Twitter? You will now face the grandmaster of being a jerk on Twitter”), and reveals she’s in a daily group chat with Maya Rudolph, Emily Spivey, Paula Pell, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, and Rachel Dratch.

-Forbes identified the 10 most overpaid actors of 2016, and Johnny Depp topped the list for the second year in a row. Also, it *tickles* me that Leonardo DiCaprio landed at #8.

-This is an interesting take on why the Casey Affleck sexual-harassment allegations just won’t stick.

Russell Crowe won’t be charged over that bizarre confrontation with Azealia Banks.

Katie Holmes shut down Dawsons Creek’s reunion chances. Um, because she has so much other stuff going on?!

Rihanna denied dissing Beyonce after not getting a Grammys nomination for Album of the Year, saying “We don’t need to be putting black women against each other.”

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are really good at charades. And life.

-Jesus cripes. A new “right-to-live” lawsuit on behalf of Sofia Vergara‘s fertilized eggs (“Emma” and “Isabella” ) has been filed in Louisiana by ex-husband Nick Loeb. How can this possibly be a thing?!

Reese Witherspoon is confused by Westworld.

Ryan Murphy says he now regrets that he directed the People v. O.J.’s Marcia Clark episode instead of hiring a woman to do it. I have my issues with him, but it’s good of him to admit this.

-Ellen DeGeneres bet Natalie Portman $1,000 that’s she’s having a girl.

-I knew (KNEW!) there’d be a backlash against the pure joy of La La Land because people are predictable monsters. But I didn’t think I’d first see it on Jezebel.

-Random: Minka Kelly is reportedly dating HIMYM’s Josh Radnor. On the plus side, she’s not dating Sean Penn.

Matthew McConaughey pet a real tiger for his new movie and lived to tell the tale.

-Pretend you’re actually at a Childish Gambino concert with his VR video for “Me and Your Mama”.

-The CW, which doesn’t cancel anything, just cancelled Reign.

-The new trailer for 50 Shades Darker is as ridiculous as you’d expect.
