Aubrey Plaza Ignored Chris Pratt’s Advice

aubrey-plaza-cosmopolitan

-While I hate the granny panty/diaper they put her in on the cover, Aubrey Plaza looks adorable in the inner pages of Cosmo. (This REDValentino dress is my fave.) In the interview, she talks about advice she got from her Parks and Rec costars (“Chris Pratt used to tell me when he would give me advice: ‘The separation is in the preparation.’ He’s one of those people who’s always very prepared. I was kind of the opposite. Clearly, it worked out for him”), and creating her own projects (“I’m so used to relying on this patriarchal idea of waiting around for someone to say, ‘You’—some brilliant man. I still have that voice inside my head that wants that. But it’s like, I’m 34. I can do it myself…I’m sick of doing other people’s shit. I want to do my own shit”).

-Speaking of great photoshoots, I love the Iris van Herpen dress Zoe Kravitz wears in British Vogue.

-Forbes estimates Rihanna is the richest woman in music with a reported net worth of $600 million thanks to her music and Fenty Beauty.

-The Jonas Brothers have a new documentary, where they talk about their purity ring past. Joe says of the virginity symbols: “That was not who we were. It was just something that we did when we were young kids but we wore the rings through the first bit of the band starting to explode, at that point it was already too late because it was in the media.”

Lady Rose Cholmondeley (aka the woman at the centre of all those Prince William rumours) attended the State Banquet last night, but while her husband got to walk in with the procession that included the Queen, the Trumps, etc. she did not.

Christoph Waltz and Wallace Shawn have joined the cast of the next Woody Allen film, and as much as I hate cancel culture we might need to evoke it now for these two. (Allen’s already long cancelled, obvs.)

-Who says spoilers are harmful? After the end of James Holzhauer‘s winning streak was leaked, last night’s Jeopardy was the most watched episode in 14 years.

Jon Hamm is incredibly charming in this interview clip with David Tennant. His little smirk at the camera after his says “always add an extra 1/2 inch.” 🤣

-The season of appreciating Keanu Reeves continues. I hope it never ends!

Busy Philipps testified today in front of the House Judiciary Committee about abortion rights. “It is my body. Not the state’s.”

-The first trailer for Luce teases a mind-bending psychological thriller starring Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer and Tim Roth.

Best and Worst Dressed at the 2019 Golden Globes

The stars came out to honour the best in TV and film at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. Unlike last year, when most celebs wore black in support of Time’s Up, this year’s red carpet was a sea of colour. White and tulle were the biggest themes, but the dresses we loved most had a bit more edge. Check out our picks for the best and worst looks of the night:

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2019 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Jen: Nicole Kidman looks like liquid sex in this slinky blood red merlot dress by Michael Kors. Nicole and I are fighting over the black hair bow (I hate it, she loves it) but this dress is an undeniable winner.

Nicole: Holy merde, Regina King came to win tonight! She is by far my best dressed in a glowing blush gown by Alberta Ferretti that shines on the carpet. So very beautiful with simple accessories and unfussy hair. The whole look is stunning.

Jen: Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan brings high fashion to the red carpet in this gorg Maison Valentino Couture creation. And are those shorts underneath there?? Marry me.

Nicole: Taraji P Henson in a plunging velvet custom Vera Wang completely makes up for the Giambattista Valli disaster from last year’s Emmys. She looked absolutely amazing in this head to toe sleek look.

Jen: Lupita Nyong’o is radiant in blue sequined Calvin Klein. I love the unique neckline and the way it moves on camera.

Nicole: Fleabag and Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is gorgeous in a red sequinned custom gown by Galvan London that fits perfectly. She lets the dress do all the work, keeping the rest of her look very simple. This is movie star style and I’m just tickled that she’s there for writing.

Jen: Keri Russell deserves to take home the hardware for her stellar performance on the final season of The Americans, but she already looks like a winner in this Grecian-inspired metallic Monique Lhuillier.

Nicole: I love Octavia Spencer‘s tea-length gown from Cristian Siriano. It’s supremely flattering and a different silhouette than we see elsewhere on the carpet.

Jen: I’m sure it’s going to end up on a bunch of worst lists, but I actually really dig this look on Julia Roberts. Her ethereal Stella McCartney top and crisp black pants make her look cool and relaxed AF.

Nicole: Thandie Newton is pure sexiness in this mirrored Michael Kors gown that shows glimpses of skin and clings to every curve. Like a lot of looks I love tonight, the dress does all the work and the really simple gorgeous hair pulls it all together.

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2019 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Nicole: Oh boy, I wish that Julianne Moore would go back to letting her pal Tom Ford dress her because Givenchy is not working for her. This is an absurd dress that tries to be too many things and ends up looking boxy and dowdy. Boo.

Jen: As soon as we saw Claire Foy’s Miu Miu gown, Nicole said that it reminded her of that scene in The Proposal when Sandra Bullock tries on the wedding dress and her boobs disappear. That about sums this up.

Nicole: What the actual hell, Alison Brie? How on earth did Taraji and Allison’s dresses come out of the same brain? Can I even call Allison’s outfit a gown? It looks like a bikini top under a sheer cover. Hard nope.

Jen: Lady Gaga is out of the shallows and off the deep end in blue Valentino. I get that it’s an homage to Judy Garland but the arms are ridiculous and there’s so much fabric on the train that it looks like she’s dragging curtains behind her.

Nicole: Jen and I actually fought over who got to pick Emily Blunt in Alexander McQueen as our best dressed until we saw the mess at the bottom of the gown. Why oh why couldn’t it be a simple column!? So close.

Jen: I adore Constance Wu and I want so much more for her than this underwhelming Vera Wang. The colour makes it look like support wear, and tulle is nobody’s friend.

Nicole: I’m all for simple tonight but man, Amy Adams is too austere in her teal Calvin Klein. She needs lipstick and a necklace, maybe a bow? Let’s get Tom Ford to dress her from now on, too!

Jen: The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden is trapped in the bad place with this terrible gown. Puckered seams, unflattering colour, clashing straps. What is this??

Brangelina Split, but Jennifer Aniston Gets All The Covers?

jennifer-aniston-brangelina

-UPDATE: Brad Pitt is reportedly being investigated for child abuse after allegedly getting verbally and physically abusive on a private plane with his family last week. More to come, but I guess we know what that inciting “incident” Us Weekly keeps talking about is…

-Tabloids deserve all the eyerolls today. Brangelina‘s split news dropped too late for most to change this week’s covers, so the lower-tiered ones are stuck running their typical (*cough* false *cough*) stories about Jennifer Aniston. Except for the New York Post, who inexplicably ran their Brangelina split cover today — and didn’t feature a photo of Brangelina. Not surprisingly, the online reaction was swift and punishing. I’m wondering how long it’ll take Aniston to ask to remove herself from this narrative?

-I actually thought that if anyone had a chance to rush a new cover to press before their Tuesday deadline it’d be People, but it looks like they were stuck with their Michael Strahan one. At least were in for some deep dives across the newsstand next week.

-Oh my god, I didn’t even think about how the split is going to affect Brangelina’s Miravel rosé. But that’s my summer water!

-Just in case you weren’t already convinced that Brad Pitt was blindsided, here’s footage of CNN breaking the divorce news to George Clooney.

-Meanwhile, I love Lainey’s acutely sharp insight into how Pitt is floundering without being the beneficiary of Angelina Jolie‘s media savvy. He’s going to need to tighten up if he’s fighting for joint custody, as TMZ is reporting.

Chelsea Handler weighed in on the split by saying “he married a ***king lunatic.” Not that she’s biased or anything.

-Also, I’m going to really, really need Jam Session to drop an emergency Brangelina podcast stat.

-In other couple news, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’ camps have shot down Us Weekly’s report that they are secretly married. Gawd Hollywood, can’t you give us one thing to hold onto this week?!

-Ok, let’s turn to happier topics, shall we? Like Parks and Rec’s Jean-Ralphio meeting his doppelganger, Stranger Things’ Steve.

Idris Elba is going to be on TV again. Just pour this show directly into my eyeballs ASAP.

Joss Whedon recruited stars from Buffy, Avengers, Greys Anatomy, Blindspot and more for a predictably great anti-Trump PSA. And he returned to Twitter!

Gabrielle Union continues to impress the hell out of me on her Birth of a Nation press tour. “In order to begin to see change start to occur, we have to be willing to have conversations with people who have different opinions than us. I’ve already talked to Lena Dunham; I would love to talk to Kate Upton and Amy Schumer. Maybe I can help to explain the oppressive systems that have benefited and allowed them to say these careless, insensitive and offensive things. Those conversations are awkward as f-ck and they get heated.”

Uma Thurman is the latest movie star to make the jump to TV.

-Folk aren’t impressed with Karen Gillan‘s ‘sexist’ Jumanji outfit, but she insists there’s a reason why she’s wearing child-sized clothes.

-How come this is the first I’m hearing about Netflix’s Easy, a show that drops tomorrow starring Aya Cash, Dave Franco, Hannibal Buress, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jake Johnson from the guy who did Drinking Buddies??  I love all of those people! This is the issue of peak TV meeting Netflix’s revulsion for promotion – stuff gets lost in the shuffle.

-I spent a lot of time staring at the McQueen dress Emily Blunt wore to The Girl On The Train premiere and trying to figure out if I like it or not. I think so?  Ask me again in five minutes and I might not.

-My stance on Felicity Jones’ terrible dress at the Burberry show is much less conflicted.

Leah Remini is teaming up with A&E for a new series on Scientology. Here for it.

-Intriguing: Jeffrey Tambor says he has “marching orders” to return to the Arrested Development set in January.

-I love that Chris Pratt braiding interviewers’ hair is now a thing. (Also, Denzel is in a way better mood in this video than he seemed at TIFF.)

-This is really great writing on The Ringer this week celebrating the types of TV that critics tend to ignore. As much as I like Atlanta, Mr Robot, etc., I’m most looking forward to the return of superheroes and soapy dramas.

-This new Anne of Green Gables trailer is…something.

-Yes, Ryan Gosling plays a keytard in La La Land. Him posing with it while biting his lower lip –as well as the scene where Emma Stone forces him to perform “I Ran” — is pure delight.

Gosling, Kate Hudson and Hugh Grant read mean tweets about themselves on Kimmel last night.

Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe get their math on in the new Hidden Figures trailer. People who saw this at TIFF loved it.
