–RuPaul interviews Dolly Parton in the new issue of Marie Claire, and it’s fantastic. Parton tells him: “See, you’re a drag queen. Those are like costumes to you. This is my living self. I am a living drag queen. You dress up just now and then, but for me, though, I like the wigs and I wear them almost every day.”

-So it looks like those early reports of everyone from the franchise coming back for Spider-Man 3 were accurate: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst and Alfred Molina are all reportedly set to reprise their roles.

–Lori Loughlin‘s daughter Olivia Jade showed up on Red Table Talk and the discussion before about whether she deserves the platform is worth watching. Once she sat down, Gammy didn’t let up.

–Courteney Cox revealed how she got the turkey on her head for that Friends episode, and it’s kinda gross.

-Netflix’s Prom is getting good reviews (if you ignore the James Corden bits).

-This clip of Barack Obama sitting for an interview on Showtime’s Desus & Mero made me smile.

-Yass! Zoey’s Infinite Playlist is returning Jan 5. That’s way sooner than I anticipated, which is a happy surprise.

-This video of George Clooney commenting on classic movies is great, but I’m bummed he’s never seen 10 Things I Hate About You.

-Meanwhile, a bevy of his friends and costars—including Julianna Margulies, David Letterman, Bradley Cooper, Sam Rockwell, Tilda Swinton and Felicity Jones—paid tribute to Clooney at Inside the Museum of Modern Art and Chanel’s virtual evening.

-The fallout from Warner Bros moving all their 2020 movies to streaming on HBO Max continues. From the sounds of it, they bungled the announcement and didn’t warn their talent that it was happening. Christopher Nolan slammed them in a statement to THR, saying, “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service.” I think they could have handled the communication to the producers/directors/actors better, but given the state of the world it was still the right choice to make. And calling HBO Max “the worst streaming service” shows how little Nolan has dealt with streamers.

-AT&T CEO defended the streaming plan as HBO Max nears 12.6M activated subs, calling it a “win-win-win.”

–Shawn Mendes says he’s taking Camila Cabello to his parents’ place in Pickering for the holidays.

–Emily Blunt is hopeful that an Edge of Tomorrow sequel with Tom Cruise might actually happen.

–Matthew McConaughey continues to get heat for his “let’s all just get along ” bs while the U.S. is sliding towards fascism.

-Wow, I adored the first Euphoria special, which is just Rue and her sponsor eating pancakes in a diner. Sepinwall nails it: “”The show’s rare quiet moments were so powerful, they couldn’t help prompt the question of how good the series as a whole could be if it ever switched to decaf for a while…Necessity is the mother of invention — or, in this case, of restraint. The precarious (and expensive) nature of Covid-era production forced Levinson to take a low-fi approach that otherwise would not have been likely for a proper Season Two premiere. And it results in a spectacular hour that captures nearly all of the series’ strengths, without any of its weaknesses.”

-Everyone’s freaking out over the way Nigella Lawson says “microwave” in this clip.

-Here’s the trailer for the Viggo Mortensen-directed Falling, which got a lot of buzz on the film festival circuit.

Kate Winslet On This Year’s Uncertain Awards Season

–Kate Winslet, back in the awards race with same-sex romance Ammonite, covers THR and talks about choreographing her own sex scenes with Saoirse Ronan (“[Director] Francis [Lee] was naturally very nervous. And I just said to him, ‘Listen, let us work it out.’ And we did. ‘We’ll start here. We’ll do this with the kissing, boobs, you go down there, then you do this, then you climb up here.’ I mean, we marked out the beats of the scene so that we were anchored in something that just supported the narrative. I felt the proudest I’ve ever felt doing a love scene on Ammonite. And I felt by far the least self-conscious”) and attending this year’s TIFF (“I can be barefoot and I don’t have to put a dress on. It’s awesome”).

–Justin and Hailey Bieber appear to have missed the memo on L.A.’s no parties order.

–Brad Pitt is reportedly dating Nicole Poturalski, a German model. They were spotted together in France. There’s lots of chatter about how she looks like Angelina Jolie, but looking at her Instagram I’m not sure I see it.

–Britney Spears’ sister just made a move to control the pop star’s assets. Jamie Lynn Spears, who was selected as trustee of the pop superstar’s estate two years ago, is seeking more control over the performer’s fortune. Meanwhile, Spears’ father submitted additional documentation to continue the conservatorship, including checking a box that indicates the singer is unable handle her finances.

-My goodness. More powerful Hollywood men have been named as having been involved with the actress Charlotte Kirk.

–Thandie Newton said she was “surprised by the appreciation” she got after speaking candidly about what it’s like working with Tom Cruise. “I have nothing to lose because I could just then not get hired, which is kind of normal for people in my generation anyway. So I’ve got nothing to lose and I would rather go out using this moment.”

–Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst reunited virtually with director Peyton Reed and writer Jessica Bendinger to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Bring It On.

–Louis C.K. donated to Joe Biden’s campaign; Biden gave it back.

–Halle Berry has dropped her lawyer and is now representing herself in her divorce proceedings with Olivier Martinez. This seems…misguided.

-Alias costar Kevin Weisman posted some very cute old photos of the cast have a pre-awards show party in 2002.

-It’s really interesting to see how US-based movie publications are handling film reviews these days. Collider just posted: “To publish reviews without any awareness of the current landscape can be seen as an implicit endorsement of attending the theater. That would be putting our readership’s health in jeopardy, and we don’t want to do that.”

-Meanwhile, Variety interviewed Christopher Nolan stans who are taking flights just to see Tenet.

-I really like this idea of using empty major league baseball fields to screen movies, but Warner Bros and or Nolan won’t even let Tenet screen at drive-ins in cities where theatres are still closed, so good luck with that.

-If you want to see the Dune trailer, you actually have to go to the movies. It’s currently only showing in front of Tenet, but isn’t expected to premiere online until Sept 9. Seriously, what is Warner Bros doing?!?

-Good news for One Day at a Time fans. The series, which was picked up by Pop after being cancelled on Netflix, will now also air on CBS.

-Altered Carbon has been canceled by Netflix after — you guessed it! — two seasons. They’re not even pretending their shows will last longer than 2-3 seasons anymore, huh?

-Stranger Things’ kiddo Noah Schnapp denies using the n-word while singing along to a song.

-I caught up on I May Destroy You’s season finale (which aired on HBO on Monday but a few months ago in the UK) and oh my god. If you have HBO or Crave, it’s so worth watching. It’s been a while since a show got me so jazzed that I immediately looked up all the think pieces as soon as it ended. No wonder celebrities like Janelle Monae, Seth Rogen, Adele, and Jane Fonda have been raving about it.

-I also appreciated this piece on I May Destroy You’s similarities with HBO’s other devastating new show about the power of narrative, I’ll Be Gone In the Dark.

-A shy teen makes music with a band of ghosts in the trailer for Netflix’s new musical Julie and the Phantoms.

-Quarantine comedies are the latest thing. HBO’s Coastal Elites features Sarah Paulson, Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy and Issa Rae. Meanwhile, a bunch of familiar faces show up in the trailer for Netflix’s remotely shot anthology series Social Distance.

-Here’s the trailer for Sundance hit The Forty-Year-Old Version. Writer, director and actress Radha Blank won the Vanguard Award for her comedy about a once-promising playwright who turns to hip-hop.

Issa Rae Talks Emmy Nominations

–Issa Rae covers the new issue of THR and talks about her Emmy nominations (“Awards don’t validate you. They allow more people to know about the series, like, ‘Oh, what is this?’ That’s all you want”), why she thinks the Emmys recognized Insecure this year (“I’m going to be real. I think the pandemic, being quarantined during a period when our humanity was questioned, in a more front-facing way, definitely helped. We came on during a time when people were bored at home, and also there were racial uprisings, and our show served as a comfort”), and her love of I May Destroy You (“It’s amazing. It’s really disturbing. The conversations that have [been] sparked around it are just so necessary. I almost wish it had come sooner. It’s going to be so impactful to a generation of people”).

–Justin and Hailey Bieber and Shawn Mendes were all spotted at a home recording studio in LA yesterday.

–Dax Shepard is recuperating after breaking four ribs in a motorcycle accident on a California road course.

–Kirsten Dunst is very confused about why she’s part of Kanye West‘s presidential campaign materials.

–Ben Affleck isn’t done with Batman yet. He’ll appear along with Michael Keaton’s Batman in the upcoming Flash movie, which is all about the multiverse (oh god, I’m having CW crossover flashbacks). Interestingly, they confirmed Affleck’s Batman will appear in no other films or the rumoured HBO MAX show.

-Here’s a new teaser for the Synder cut of Justice League.

–Olivia Wilde just landed a secret Marvel project — and the hints have everyone thinking it’ll be a Spider-Woman movie.

–Bella Thorne joined OnlyFans yesterday and crashed the site.

-The ACLU has offered to help Britney Spears, tweeting “People with disabilities have a right to lead self-directed lives and retain their civil rights. If Britney Spears wants to regain her civil liberties and get out of her conservatorship, we are here to help her.”

–Sarah Cooper, the TikToker famous for lip synching Trump, just landed a CBS comedy.

-Speaking of CBS, they’re having issues with yet another problematic white dude showrunner. This one is the guy behind All Rise (which has a black female leave – a rarity on that network). Five writers from the original seven hired have left the drama over disputes with showrunner Greg Spottiswood about the depictions of race and gender. He kept his job after reviews by human resources. Said one writer: “We had to do so much behind the scenes to keep these scripts from being racist and offensive.”

-A former writer on the show said in a Twitter thread that the environment in the writers’ room is even worse than the article indicates.

-Ellen Show staffers will now get “perks” like five paid days off to use at their discretion, birthdays off, and paid time for doctors appointments and family matters. That … doesn’t seem like a lot?

-British singer James Blunt says once he developed scurvy after adopting an all-meat diet for two months to assert his masculinity while studying in a female-dominated class. Gotta love a good comeuppance!

-It was a rough day for Comedy Central shows that previously looked like they had a bright future. Drunk History has been canceled after six seasons — despite being renewed for a seventh season last year, while Comedy Central also canceled Tosh 2.0, reversing course on its January decision to renew the show for *four* more seasons.

-Starting tomorrow, all 1,687 of Cineplex’s screens will be open for business across Canada, making the exhibitor the first major theatre chain in the world to be 100% re-opened. I can’t imagine feeling comfortable in a movie theatre yet.

–Gillian Anderson joins Olivia Colman in the trailer for season four of The Crown, arriving Nov 15.

-Here’s the trailer for Sofia Coppola‘s latest film, On the Rocks, starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones, and Marlon Wayans.

-The new trailer for Netflix’s Love Guaranteed stars Rachael Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. as a lawyer and client who fall in love. That seems unethical but I adore them both and need more Netflix romcoms in my life so YUP!
