Canada Celebrates Schitt’s Creek’s Sweep

-Toronto celebrated Schitt’s Creek’s historic Emmy sweep by lighting the CN Tower gold last night, and the cast was loving it.

–Kelly Clarkson opened up about her recent divorce on her talk show’s first day back, saying “Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came, but what I’m dealing with is hard — it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts.”

-When Ellen Degeneres‘ show returned to production this week, she “jokingly” told staff not to look her in the eye. What a funny joke that they must have really appreciated!

–Tiffany Haddish says one of the perks of dating Common is she gets to quarantine at his house. “Yeah, his house is bigger than my house, so that’s nice. He lives in the Hills. It’s nice.”

-Gabrielle Union will lead a table read of a classic Friends episode over Zoom on September 22. If they keep doing these things, the HBO Max reunion will soon become moot … as maybe it should?

-The upcoming season of Supergirl will be its last. Melissa Benoist is pregnant and her husband is no longer on the show, so I wonder if she no longer wants to be stuck in Vancouver for 8 months of the year. I assume some of the actors may end up on the new Superman & Lois show.

-Despite the Daily Mail’s legal defense, Meghan Markle’s lawyers continue to deny she co-operated with the authors of the recently released book Finding Freedom.

–Kate Middleton enjoyed some socially distanced park hangs to support parent-powered support programs.

–Mel Gibson is reportedly making a Passion of the Christ sequel because the bad news just never ends.

-The Billboard Music Awards nominations came out today and Post Malone tops the list with 16 nods.

-Do I have to start watching Jann Arden’s sitcom? Because this clip of her beating up Sarah McLachlan is hilarious.

-This interviewer talking to Judith Butler seemed sympathetic to J.K. Rowling, but Butler was NOT HAVING IT.

–Vanessa Bryant is suing the L.A. County Sheriff and his department, claiming authorities released unauthorized photos of the helicopter crash that killed her husband, Kobe Bryant, and their daughter.

-Is Tenet a flop? It’s complicated but the short answer is yes.

-I’ve been in fandoms. I love fandoms. But sometimes fandoms can be super messy, and it gets even messier when creators/stars try to police them. That said, this is a very good PSA from former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants about the racism within that fandom.

-Celebrate the first day of fall with the Supernova trailer, which features Colin Firth in a variety of sweaters. He plays a man whose partner of 20 years (Stanley Tucci) is diagnosed with dementia.

–Megan Thee Stallion is on the cover of W Magazine’s Music issue. She talks about racism (“You know, anything can go viral, so I really like how we’re able to catch these people doing these disgusting things and put ’em on blast, and people are getting fired from their jobs. It’s like, Yeah, we see you. You like to be disgusting in private, so let us show you how to keep that same energy in public. I like that we get to call everybody out now”), and cyberbulling (“It’s really mind-blowing to see the nasty things that people say to you. I don’t know if people think you not gon’ see it. I feel like just being an artist, waking up every day, voicing your own opinions is a risk… Just talking. Being real is a risk”).

–Cardi B has no interest in Tiger King star Carol Baskin‘s criticism of “WAP”, saying “I’m not gonna engage with Carole Baskin on that. Like, that’s just ridiculous you know? Oh, Lord. Like, girl you killed your goddamn husband.”

–Taika Waititi wished Chris Hemsworth a happy birthday — by tweeting a photo of his brother.

–Miley Cyrus appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and opened up about her sex life. She says the first time she “went all the way with a dude” it was with Liam Hemsworth when she was 16, but he didn’t know. “I lied and said he wasn’t the first so I didn’t seem like a loser.”

-She also confirmed that she and Cody Simpson have split.

–Dolly Parton continues to be a gem. She’s funding covid research, vocal about BLM, supporting childhood literacy and now in her Billboard cover story, she talks about removing the word “Dixie” from Dollywood. “As soon as you realize that [something] is a problem, you should fix it. Don’t be a dumbass. That’s where my heart is. I would never dream of hurting anybody on purpose.” She also says “Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter?”

–Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter cameo in the new Weezer video.

–Brad Pitt’s lawyers slammed Angelina Jolie for requesting to disqualify the judge in their upcoming child custody trial, saying she’s delaying the case and “depriving” the kids of a “final resolution.”

–Edgar Wright was adamant that Scott Pilgrim shoot in Toronto. “Proud to have shot Toronto for Toronto after decades of the city subbing in for NYC in tons of comic book movies. Couldn’t have been a more perfect setting for my first North American film. Love it & miss it.”

–Chrissy Teigen announced she’s pregnant by debuting her baby bump in John Legend’s new music video.

-A commenter told Kelly Clarkson that her marriage failed because she’s too busy, and she was not having it.

–Drake dropped a new video for “Laugh Now Cry Later,” shot a Nike HQ and featuring Lil Durk, Odell Beckham Jr., Marshawn Lynch and Kevin Durant.

-I absolutely agree with this take on why gritty reboots are not what TV viewers need right now. I made it through Perry Mason because the cast was so stacked, but what a slog.

–January Jones‘ social media posts continue to awe and amaze me.

-Schitt’s Creek star Noah Reid got married last month and shared his wedding photos on Insta.

-For Angelina Jolie‘s interview for Harper’s Bazaar, she was photographed by her youngest son, Knox. She talks about how the pandemic is affecting victims of domestic violence and girls’ education.

-In a recent interview, Lil Twist claims that Justin Bieber‘s team once convinced him to take on drug charges for the singer (likely referring to an incident in July of 2013, when he was pulled over in Bieber’s car and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana). He said: “If they would have put weed charges on Justin in his early career, it would have been bad on him. So I got a call one day saying, ‘Twist, do you really love this kid?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ They said, ‘Cool, if you love him then you can take the heat for him because you can come off a little weed charge.” Lil Twist later released a statement on his comments: “We are at a very critical point in society as we rewrite a new narrative that encompasses the experience of being Black in America. However, rewriting a new narrative requires one to stand in and speak his or her truth with confidence…In the spirit of being authentic, I felt it a disservice to my fans and the general public to not be completely transparent about my experience.”

–Kristen Bell is promoting her new children’s book on racism and is getting a lot of blowback for glorifying colourblindness, as it comes perilously close to declaring Purple Lives Matter. There’s no mention of her donating the profits to a BLM charity but my god, let’s hope she’s not making money off this.

-Also, she’s in a new animated show voicing a biracial character who spends her free time drawing herself as a superhero whose afro puffs have powers? What??

–Anthony Mackie appeared on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show and gave a tearful talk about the importance of voting.

–Taylor Swift is once again speaking up, using Twitter to call on the Tennessee Historical Commissions to remove statues of racist historical figures.

–Jennifer Lopez and ARod are asking fans to name their new puppy and you know what guys, we are a little busy right now!

–Dave Chappelle dropped a new short-form Netflix special titled “8:46,” which the streaming platform surprise debuted for free on its YouTube comedy channel late last night. (The title refers to how long Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee against George Floyd’s neck.)

–Jessica Mulroney deleted all of her supportive comments to Vanderpump Rules star Stassi Schroeder, who was recently fired. Shinan is reporting that Mulroney’s family had been asking her to cut down on her social media but she wouldn’t stop.

-The Bachelor is getting its first Black leading man. Originally, Matt James was cast as a suitor on Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette but when production was halted due to COVID-19, ABC started thinking of a new role for him. (It’s really weird that there’s no mention of the fact that the show was once sued by Black men for discrimination.)

-Despite both an NYT article and a Buzzfeed article questioning if Anna Wintour can survive the social justice movement, in a company-wide town hall today at Conde Nast, Roger Lynch reportedly said there is “no truth” to the rumour that she’s stepping down. Still, the rumours continue to circulate.

-Speaking of upheavals in publications, this report on Refinery29’s workplace culture is damning.

-I love how all the Harry Potter actors are condemning J.K. Rowling‘s ant-trans comments, including Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright and Rupert Grint. The kids are alright.

-This is an interesting piece on how Rowling‘s focus on denying trans rights may seem to have come out of nowhere, but there’s a clear lineage of transphobic thought in British media.

–Kelly Clarkson‘s estranged husband is also her manager, which might make this divorce even more awkward. He also manages Blake Shelton, Kelly’s The Voice co-star.

–Sharon Stone revealed she was once struck by lighting: “I was filling the iron with water. I had one hand on the faucet, one hand on the iron and the well got hit with lightning and the lighting came up through the water … I got picked up and thrown across the kitchen, and I hit the refrigerator. I was like, ‘Whoa!’ ”

-The Oscars will now include a locked 10 Best Picture slots — no more variation in a move aimed at diversifying nominees by literally adding more seats at the table for the final ceremony.

–Will Arnett is a dad again.

-This week was hard and listening to this weird ass new song by Glass Animals got me through it. I love how the second half of the video shows how he recorded it during quarantine.

-The trailer for Netflix’s Feel the Beat is ticking a lot of my boxes:  it looks adorably cheesy, it was shot in Toronto, it’s about dancing, and it costars the dad from Veronica Mars and the best friend from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
