Kristen Stewart’s Royal Role

–Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in a new movie which is…hard to imagine. I actually really like Stewart as an actress but she seems to bring a very specific, twitchy energy to every role, whether it’s Personal Shopper or Charlie’s Angels.

–Gwyneth Paltrow plugged her new ‘Smells Like My Orgasm’ candle on Fallon — with help from her 14-year-old son Moses.

-In this week’s People, Tyler Perry penned an essay about racial injustice. He narrates a recorded version for 8 min & 46 seconds — the exact length of time Derek Chauvin used a knee to pin George Floyd by the neck as he died.

-Screenshots are circulating from a private Facebook group in which a black film editor posted about looking to connect with other black editors, and a bunch of well-known white editors immediately called foul.

–J. Cole released a new song on Tuesday, which contains verses that many interpret as taking aim at Chicago rapper and activist Noname. It is all very tone policing. “When I see something that’s valid, I listen/But s**t, it’s something about the queen tone that’s botherin’ me” and “Instead of conveying you holier, come help get us up to speed.” He responded to the backlash by tweeting that he stands by his lyrics, but also encouraged fans to follow Noname: “I love and honor her as a leader in these times.”

–Chance the Rapper also weighed in, tweeting: “They both my peoples but only one of them put out a whole song talking about how the other needs to reconsider their tone and attitude in order to save the world. It’s not constructive and undermines all the work Noname has done. It’s not BWs job to spoon feed us. We grown”

-The Bold and the Beautiful headed back into production today and the safety measures are wild, including using actors’ real-life partners as stand-ins for intimate scenes.

-With all that’s been going on, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a public #MeToo-ing but that’s what happened last night to Chris D’Elia. The comedian (who, ironically, played a predator in the second season of You) was the subject of a series of Twitter threads from women who say he behaved inappropriately with them. Multiple young women shared screenshots of him apparently sliding into their DMs and trying to arrange meetups when they were still in their teens.

–D’Elia responded with a statement to TMZ: “I have said and done things that might have offended people during my career, but I have never knowingly pursued any underage women at any point. All of my relationships have been both legal and consensual and I have never met or exchanged any inappropriate photos with the people who have tweeted about me. That being said, I really am truly sorry. I was a dumb guy who ABSOLUTELY let myself get caught up in my lifestyle. That’s MY fault. I own it. I’ve been reflecting on this for some time now and I promise I will continue to do better.”

-Comic book writer Warren Ellis is also coming under fire on Twitter for his interactions with women.

-The CW released a committment to making their social pages safe and free of harassment for fans and talent. Which is great — but Candice Patton has been receiving online harassment and threats for 6 years and they did nothing.

-This is a very good piece on how some Hollywood TV studios drastically cut the pay of lowest-level assistants & support staff after the pandemic hit. Last week, at least 15 showrunners at WBTV banded together to fight for them, but the recent cuts to assistants’ pay particularly rankled employees who used to work with Andrew Kreisberg, who was fired from The CW in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment — and was paid nearly $10 million by Warner Bros after he was let go.

–Ted Danson gushing about Schitt’s Creek to Annie Murphy during an Emmys roundtable is so heart healing.

-In another Emmys roundtable, Patrick Stewart revealed he was not high on Gene Roddenberry’s list to star on Star Trek: “Somewhere in the cellar of Paramount Pictures, there’s a Post-it note which says, ‘I do not want to hear Patrick Stewart’s name mentioned again ever!’ ”

–Joe Cornish says he’s met up with John Boyega to talk ideas for an Attack The Block sequel. Don’t tease me!!

-This is a good look back at how New Girl mastered the art of the slow burn with Nick and Jess.  (I think they eventually screwed up that relationship, but the beginning was perfection.)

-The National Book Critics Circle has imploded. More than half of the board has resigned in a series of events one member described as “bizarre and bloody in an end-of-a-Tarantino-movie way.”

–A teen romance about a guy who’s so beautiful he has to keep his face under wraps? Sure.

Mariah Carey and the Schitt’s Creek Cast Sing “Hero” to Graduates

-There were so many awesome moments in the Obamas ‘Dear Class of 2020’ celebration. Beyoncé delivered a powerful 10-minute speech, Taylor Swift told a story about missing her own graduation, and Lady Gaga also contributed a video. But my fave part was when the characters of Schitt’s Creek sang a song — with a surprise cameo from Mariah Carey!

–J.K. Rowling is once again facing allegations of transphobia after she publicly took issue with a headline that used the inclusive phrase “people who menstruate” and then, when she faced pushback on Twitter, dug her heels in even further. (Seriously, is it that hard to understand the difference between sex and gender? She seemed to get it when she wrote the scene in which Hermione takes the form of Harry.)  Plus, of all the times for her to stir this up again — at the start of Pride and when the world is already on fire.

-It is just me, or are The CW superhero shows imploding? On the heels of the Batwoman shakeup, The Flash’s Hartley Sawyer, who plays Ralph Dibny/The Elongated Man, has been fired for old tweets he made featuring racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. (I stopped watching a couple of seasons ago but I do remember that character used to refer to a female scientist by her measurements instead of her character’s name, so this might not be a great loss for the show.)

-Meanwhile, Batwoman’s showrunner explained why they’re creating an entirely new role rather than recasting the main character.

-In other CW news, Riverdale’s writers have vowed to do better when it comes to their Black characters.

–Alexis Ohanian and wife Serena Williams spoke out about his resignation from the board of Reddit.

-Even Bryce Dallas Howard, who starred in The Help, doesn’t want you to watch The Help right now.

–John Boyega thanked his fans and colleagues for having his back after his speech at a London protest.

–Lea Michele‘s Broadway understudy says she was already monster when she was only 12.

-Federal prosecutors in New York have formally requested access to Prince Andrew as part of their ongoing criminal investigation into the abuses and sex trafficking of Jeffrey Epstein.

-K-pop continues to come through. BTS and their management company donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter. As soon as the band announced it, a team of stans called One in an Army vowed to match it and ended up raising $1,026,531 in just over 24 hours thanks to 35,609 donors.

–Jennifer Aniston has also quietly donated nearly $1 million.

-Meanwhile, Terry Crews is facing criticism after posting some nonsense about “Black supremacy.”

–Amanda Seyfried and Kevin Bacon try to have a peaceful vacation in the trailer for horror flick You Should Have Left.

–Billie Eilish is on the cover of GQ, in which she talks about past relationships (“Here’s a bomb for you: I have never felt desired. My past boyfriends never made me feel desired. None of them”), and her style (“Sometimes I dress like a boy. Sometimes I dress like a swaggy girl. And sometimes I feel trapped by this persona that I have created because sometimes I think people view me not as a woman”).

-Glee’s Amber Riley spoke out on the Lea Michele controversy, saying this was the first time in two years that the actress had called her. “I’m not going to say that Lea Michele is racist. That’s not what I’m saying…She’s also pregnant and I think that everybody needs to chill. Y’all dragged her for a couple of days. But at the same time, in my inbox there are a lot of black actors and actresses telling me their stories and were letting me know they have dealt with the same things being on set, being terrorized by the white girls that are the leads of the show.”

-This story about how Kiersey Clemons fell in love with her stunt double Ebony De La Haye on the set of Sweetheart is so sweet and exactly what I needed today. (Clemons is in the Nick Offerman movie Hearts Beat Loud, which is now on Netflix and is quickly becoming my go-to comfort movie.)

–Ellen Degeneres has responded to the backlash over her Black Lives Matter comments.

–Dwayne Johnson posted an impassioned, 8-minute video addressed to Trump.

–Meghan Markle gave a heartfelt virtual commencement speech to this year’s graduating class at her former high school. “I wanted to say the right thing and I was really nervous that I wouldn’t, or that it would get picked apart. And I realized the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing because George Floyd’s life mattered and Breonna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered and Tamir Rice’s life mattered, and so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we do not know.”

–Emma Watson is promising to learn and be better after she posted three black boxes but had not broken her silence before that.

-I love all the directors who pledged to hire John Boyega after he expressed concern that participating in the protests would damage his career.
