Shonda Rhimes’ Power Moves

shoda rhimes thr

-In her THR cover storyShonda Rhimes talks about leaving ABC (she says her breaking point came when she tried to get an extra all-inclusive pass to Disneyland for a trip she took with her kids and sister and a high-ranking exec asked her “Don’t you have enough?”), talks about setting expectations with Netflix (“The first thing I said was, ‘You’re not going to get another Grey’s Anatomy — not Grey’s Anatomy in a cornfield, Grey’s Anatomy on a baseball field or Grey’s Anatomy at an airport, that’s just not happening’ “), and the culture shock of being at the streaming service (“The reason I came to Netflix is because I wanted to be able to make television without anybody bothering me. And as long as I get to keep making television without anybody bothering me, I’m happy”).

Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and James Gunn took to social media to defend Chris Pratt. So they suddenly showed up when a meaningless throwaway Twitter poll voted him the worst Chris, but stayed silent when Brie Larson was facing hate and brutal boycott campaign from fanboys for being Captain Marvel and advocating for diversity? Screw them.

-Welp, Quibi is dead. Jeffrey Katzenberg is calling investors to tell them he’s shutting the company down, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. They’ll likely blame it on the pandemic and not the atrocious rollout or the fact that we are at the saturation point with streaming services.

Jennifer Lawrence says her biggest regret about getting married last year is she didn’t have a big bachelorette party.

Dolly Parton sang a few lines of “Bury Me Beneath The Willow” on the Late Show last night and it made Stephen Colbert cry. I loved her reaction: “I better hush before you cry yourself to death and we can’t finish the show.”

-I loved this chat between Jamie Lee Curtis and Neve Campbell about their reigns as scream queens.

-Legally Blonde 3’s new release date has been confirmed. I’m skeptical we’ll be back in theatres by then, but you do you, Hollywood.

-The reviews for The Witches are in, and it sounds very, very bad. Too bad; I was ready to watch Anne Hathaway ham it up.

-Another movie that isn’t faring well with critics is Netflix’s Rebecca remake mostly because the film portrays the central relationship as straightforwardly romantic, rather than tragic or toxic. The fact that this is how they depict the last scene makes it clear they had no idea what the book was actually about.

-Speaking of reviews, critics seem mixed on Borat 2. But the only thing everyone seems to agree on is the Rudy Giuliani segment is unbelievably uncomfortable. Apparently he follows Borat’s “daughter” into a hotel room and it’s … not good. The screengrab that’s floating around Twitter looks bad enough.

Jared Leto will play the Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, just in case you needed more convincing to skip it.

Scott Speedman has joined the cast of You for season 3. I’m really happy for him, but my heart won’t be able to take it if he turns into a murder buddy for Joe.

Jann Arden‘s sitcom is going to stream in the US on Hulu. Between this and her singing the Dawson’s Creek theme song when it hits Netflix, is this the year of Jann in America? Let’s hope! (She did a Cameo for my friend’s birthday this week and it was the best one I’ve ever seen.)

Ariana Grande and Adele stans are not happy because they don’t understand how Twitter works.

-Normal People star Daisy Edgar Jones has been cast as Kyra, the lead in the film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing. I still haven’t finished that book — not because it’s bad but just because it was too heavy for my brain in 2020.

-Netflix will campaign Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis in the lead actor and actress categories for their Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom performances. They’ll also submit Boseman for supporting actor in Da 5 Bloods.

-The first trailer for Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon is gorgeous.

Celebs Urge Fans to Vote

mariah carey voting

V Magazine released a series of covers with Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Jaden Smith, Chris Evans, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Lawrence, Halsey and more, in which they break down why they’re voting. Carey said “We’ve been socialized to believe that poverty is a personal failure rather than our systems failing us.” Meanwhile, Swift didn’t just tell people to vote; she told them she’s voting for Biden. (She even made cookies.)

-Meanwhile, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson surged past the 200 million follower mark on IG after endorsing Biden, so it’s not exactly career suicide.

-Watch the West Wing cast reunite and recreate the ‘Hartsfield’s Landing’ episode from season 3 in the trailer for an upcoming special benefiting When We All Vote. This gave me chills. That show petered out in the end so you almost forget how very good the first few seasons were.

David Foster (who is 70) and Katherine McPhee (who is not) are expecting their first child together.

-Finally, Tory Lanez has been charged with assaulting a woman (presumably Megan Thee Stallion, who claims he fired a gun at her as she exited a car, resulting in injuries to her feet that required surgery).

-If you follow Deux Moi (and who doesn’t during quarantine?) then you’ll have seen all the sightings from the past 24 hours of people claiming to have witnessed Noah Centineo and Stassie Karanikolaou getting engaged/eloping in Vegas.

-Of all the TV shows that I want an oral history about its behind-the-scenes shenanigans, nothing beats The Vampire Diaries (followed closely by The Good Wife). The whispers about what went down on that set are legendary. Now, former costars Paul Wesley and Matt Davis are duking it out on Twitter over politics. (Davis already has a, um, questionable reputation.)

-I love that celebs who are “remotely attending” fashion shows just seem to be throwing on every piece they own from that designer. Here’s Marion Cotillard at Chanel, and Euphoria’s Storm Reid at Miu Miu.

-There’s an urban legend that Princess Beatrice once pretended to knight singer James Blunt with a sword, but instead sliced Ed Sheeran across the face. Turns out Sheeran’s manager says it’s true — and she hasn’t spoken to him since.

-The Academy Awards have introduced new rules allowing movies to be eligible if they’ve screened at drive-ins. Which is very smart because there’s no way theatres are staying open in the major markets this xmas.

-This is a fascinating look at how Alex Gibney pulled off a secret exposé of America’s COVID-19 failures in five months.

-With Tony Stark out of the picture it seems Peter Parker needs a new mentor — and Doctor Strange is stepping up. Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise the role in the next Spider-Man film.

-The “unrenewal” trend continues: Showtime has cancelled Kirsten Dunst‘s show On Becoming a God in Central Florida, despite renewing it for Season 2 last September. When Showtime (who never cancels anything) gets in on the trend, you know TV is screwed.

Selena Quintanilla‘s life story will be streaming on Netflix in December. Check out the trailer.

-The Princess Switch: Switched Again is coming to Netflix Nov 19, with Vanessa Hudgens set to return as 3 look-alikes. I can’t wait to see how long they can keep this franchise going…

-Here’s the trailer for David Fincher’s latest film Mank, a biopic of Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, which is coming to Netflix.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky Get Flirty For Fenty

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky sat down to interview each other and talked skincare, beauty icons, favourite TV shows, and classic cartoons. They’ve got an adorable rapport. I love when she makes fun of his first red carpet appearance: “You coulda used some Fenty Skin back then.”

-Congrats to Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, just welcomed a baby girl to the world, their first child together: Daisy Dove Bloom. (Ok, I gotta give it to them. Daisy Bloom is an adorable name.)

-Also, I very much like that they announced the news on UNICEF’s Instagram account with a statement about the need for pre- and post-natal healthcare for women around the world.

Jessica Mulroney would like to remind you all that Meghan Markle is her BFF, ok?

-This interview with Tiffany Haddish and John Mulaney is a delight, especially the bit with Haddish talking about wearing a prosthetic penis for confidence.

This is a good look at how Trevor Noah‘s The Daily Show has gone from being jokes about the news to, more and more, the news with some jokes amid the pandemic — and it’s clearly working. His viewership numbers are astounding, and his videos have racked up millions of views on YouTube, including an extended interview he released in March that went viral.

-It’s worth watching Stephen Colbert’s segment last night, in which he talked about how NBA players are showing more leadership than the RNC convention. “Why should we pay attention to what they’re saying if none of what they’re saying tonight is about what’s happening in America right now? Why should we watch their reality show if it doesn’t reflect our reality?”

-In an new Zoom chat, Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji talked the most emotional scenes to shoot for Insecure season four. God, I hope they both clean up at the Emmys.

-Speaking of Emmy campaign appearances, watching Succession stars Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen get giggly over Shiv and Tom is a delight.

-Grey’s Anatomy alum Sara Ramirez has announced that they are non-binary. They quietly changed their pronouns on social media a while back, and today they posted about their gender directly: “In me is the capacity to be Girlish boy, Boyish girl, Boyish boy, Girlish girl, All, Neither.”

-This is a great piece explaining OnlyFans, the spotlight on its new celebrity users, and how platforms defined and popularized by sex workers are often the first ones to deny them their place at the table.

Jaden Smith and Cara Delevingne‘s upcoming romantic drama Life In a Year is facing an uncertain future now that two of its supporting actors (Cuba Gooding Jr. and Chris D’Elia) are facing sexual misconduct claims.

-Not today, Terry Crews!

-Bravo is moving forward with its reality TV production, even Top Chef. All the contestants and judges will have to be tested and quarantined before production begins, the set will be socially distanced, and the judges won’t share food anymore.

-People are on baby bump watch for Jennifer Lawrence because of these pics.

-Weirdly, there’s lots of talk that TIFF is denying critics press accreditation this year — which makes no sense because pretty much everything is digital so it’s not like there’s capacity concerns. Hopefully this is a sign that they’re reversing their rejections.

-The Ringer posted a history of movie costars who hated each other and it’s exactly the type of content I needed today.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Marielle Heller star in the trailer for The Queen’s Gambit, Netflix’s limited series adaptation of Walter Tevis‘ novel.
