Michaela Coel Covers Keep Coming

Michaela Coel paper

-I May Destroy You creator and star Michaela Coel covers the new issue of Paper. I really want her to get Phoebe Waller-Bridge levels of fame and acclaim. She deserves it.

A$AP Rocky, Lil’ Nas X, Paloma Elsesser, Halima Aden and more star in Rihanna’s new video for Fenty Skin.

Jennifer Garner made a compelling case that Schitt’s Creek’s Moira Rose is the adult version of her Alias character.

-Riverdale’s KJ Apa got a metal shard in his eye and had his hairstylist buddy remove it — all on Instagram. This definitely feels like something a medical professional should have handled.

Kanye West posted a series of tweets late Monday claiming his wife and Kris Jenner were trying to have him locked up on medical grounds, comparing himself to Nelson Mandela and suggesting the movie Get Out resembled his own life. His family is reportedly not happy, while Dave Chappelle flew to see him. This is a good piece on how the media needs to carefully navigate how to talk about his actions and his mental health.

-Are we going to be having similar conversations about Talib Kweli soon?

Hayden Panettiere is speaking out about the domestic violence she allegedly experienced at the hands of her ex: “I am prepared to do my part to make sure this man never hurts anyone again.”

-This is a crazy article on how Prince Andrew and his team had no idea how detrimental that interview he gave to BBC would be until after it aired. Said interviewer Emily Maitlis: “We’d assumed that he’d want to show empathy to the victims or pin the blame on Jeffrey Epstein. We couldn’t understand why he hadn’t done that…We know that the palace was happy with the interview. We had plenty of engagement with them after it went out. I think their shock was not at the interview itself, but the reaction it caused in the days and weeks afterwards.”

-Also, it’s ridiculous that the British press are running stories about how Prince Harry is seen as a ‘liability’ for the monarchy when Andrew is RIGHT THERE.

-This profile on Andy Samberg is a delight, especially his take on Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

-People are really getting won over by Zac Efron‘s new travel series.

-BET will air select episodes of The Good Fight that deal with racial biases, white privilege, voter fraud and more. This is great because that show is so good (especially its last abbreviated season) that it deserves to be seen by a wider audience than CBS All Access can deliver. There was recently an episode in which an alternate reality plays out where Hilary won, and I think about it A LOT.

-Speaking of great shows, the Happy Endings reunion is, by a wide margin, my favourite bit of pop culture to come out of quarantine. It’s now available on YouTube.

-The Q&A with the cast that immediately followed it was also wonderful. I adore that Elisha Cuthbert (who is quarantining in PEI) always makes sure the East Coast Lifestyle logo is visible whenever she does a Zoom. Way to support a Maritimes business!

-Really weird but true: An armed gunman in Ukraine released 13 hostages after the country’s president consented to his demand to recommend the 2005 film Earthlings starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Keanu Reeves‘ girlfriend, Alexandra Grant, had to get a restraining order against his stalker.

-Look, it’s all fine and good if Dave Franco and Alison Brie wrote a romcom, but that doesn’t mean they have to crap on all the romcoms that have come out in the last 20 years.

-Netflix canceled the production of Turkish original series If Only after the Turkish government demanded an openly gay character be removed from the script. I seriously don’t understand the Turkish rules. I watched all of the romcom Erkenci Kus and the main couple only kissed like 3 times in 50+ episodes because the show got fined but the government each time, but now I’m watching the lead guy’s new show and he plays a womanizer who beds a different girl every night. Their morality laws confuse me.

Megan Fox goes up against a lion in trailer for Rogue.

Missy Elliott Secures Her Legend Status

-I adore Missy Elliott‘s Marie Claire cover. She talks about breaking down barriers (“I am a champion for my brown, dark women. I want them to be seen. Because we are beautiful. If we knew how special we were, we would be unstoppable”), gender equality (“We need more women out there, singing and just for being. Just for balance. Just a great balance”) and learning to appreciate the big moments (“I was just going, going, going. It wasn’t resonating what was happening. I was in the car with Michelle Obama [for Carpool Karaoke], and [my friends] called me like, ‘Girl, we got to celebrate that’s huge!’ And I’m like, ‘I’m watching a movie on Netflix'”).

-Whoo! Taika Waititi has inked a deal to write and direct a follow-up to his 2017 smash, Thor: Ragnarok.

Macy Gray gave a very strange talk show interview in which she said she’s a “vampire.”

-Netflix has altered Hannah’s graphic suicide scene in 13 Reasons Why after controversy — more than two years after it originally aired.

-This is the happiest I’ve been about Emmy nominations in YEARS. Sure, there were some snubs in this morning’s announcement that bugged me (Better Things, The Good Fight, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Hot Priest), but wow some great newcomers managed to break into the ranks, including Russian Doll, Schitt’s Creek, Jodie Comer and Fleabag. Nicole and I watched the season finale of Fleabag last night (again) and were blown away by Oliva Colman and Sian Clifford‘s performances, so I’m thrilled they both landed Supporting Actress nods.

Sacha Baron Cohen‘s tweets about getting an Emmy nod are amazing.

-Meanwhile, Julia Roberts jokingly(?) posted about getting snubbed.

Joey King tearfully Facetiming costar Patricia Arquette immediately after getting nominated was very sweet.

-The bromance continues for Matt Damon and Chris Hemsworth.

-I have very little interest in watching Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. I am, however, here for watching Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie rib Leonardo DiCaprio about the Titanic door controversy. “Could you have squeezed in there? You could’ve, couldn’t you?” Leo was so over it before the interviewer even got the full question out.

-One thing I love about the CW is how often it lets its actors (especially women) direct episodes.

-Also, I stopped watching Supergirl but I love that they changed her costume to ditch the skirt.

-It sounds like Hayden Panettiere is having a rough go of it. She remains apart from her 4-year-old child, who lives with her father in Ukraine, as her current boyfriend faces charges of abuse.

Awkwafina is having a moment. She’s interviewed by Margaret Cho in the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar. She talks about attending red carpets for Crazy Rich Asians: “I grew up never really feeling pretty or like a girly girl. I was uncomfortable in my skin when it came to that stuff. I had been dressed up for events and had gotten glam before, but at the Crazy Rich Asians premiere I looked in the mirror and it felt different. It sounds clichéd, but I felt like a princess.”

-Also, Awkwafina stars with Emma Roberts in the new trailer for the fantasy film Paradise Hills.

-A bearded Chris Evans helps smuggle Ethiopian refugees to Israel in the trailer for Netflix’s The Red Sea Diving Resort.

TV’s Leading Ladies Talk Shop

Emilia Clarke, Michelle Williams, Patricia Arquette, Christine Baranski, Danai Gurira and Niecy Nash

-God, I love Emmy roundtable season! In THR’s new issue, drama actresses Emilia Clarke, Danai Gurira, Michelle Williams, Patricia Arquette, Christine Baranski and Niecy Nash gather to talk about pay parity, the pressure to look a certain way, and standing up for their characters. (I particularly liked this bit from Gurira: “I remember having an argument with the director [on Walking Dead] because I was like, ‘I know you have [this love scene] written here like this, but this is what you’re getting.’And I wrote it on the script and I handed it to him.”)

Nina Dobrev and screenwriter/director Grant Mello look blissed up in love in Cannes. I’m happy for her — she seemed to be going through it for a bit.

-A judge ordered Hayden Panettiere’s boyfriend Brian Hickerson to stay away from her after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge earlier this month.

-ABC’s live revival of classic Norman Lear sitcoms last night was weird and wonderful. I didn’t catch the whole thing but I did see Jennifer Hudson doing The Jefferson’s theme song, and Jamie Foxx‘s hilarious break in character.

Gabrielle Union says she’s coaching hubby Dwayne Wade on basic life skills now that he’s retired from basketball. “He’s like, ‘What is this place? There’s all kind of like khaki shorts and cargo shorts and there’s all different colors.’ I’m like, ‘That’s Old Navy’…He has no idea how much milk costs. He’s like, ‘What is that, $20?’ and I’m like, ‘What kind of goat’s blood milk [are you drinking]?'”

-Warner’s upcoming streaming service just landed Anna Kendrick to star in a romcom series.  Great, yet another subscription!

Lena Waithe did an amazing job last night guest-hosting for Kimmel, but everyone’s talking about the smooch Halle Berry laid on her which I found…weird. Isn’t it a little queerbaiting? Doesn’t Lena have a fiancée?

-Huh. ABC cancelled Whiskey Cavalier a couple of weeks ago, but fan outcry (and a bump in ratings) has them reconsidering the decision, with sources saying it’s now got a 50/50 shot at coming back.

-The Good Place creator Mike Schur hasn’t given any interviews about the most recent season — until now.

-I have been following this guy’s tweets for a month now and they are a consistent source of delight! His mom recently passed away and when he looked at her Kindle he was surprised to find it filled thousands of verryyyyy risque romance novels — which he is now reading and reviewing on Twitter.

-A bunch of media sites jumped the gun this morning and broke the embargo for the new Star Trek: Picard first teaser trailer, so CBS pulled it. But it’s back online now. Showing Picard (now an admiral after quitting Starfleet dues to events 15 years prior) at his winery.

-The first official trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate has arrived. Linda Hamilton is still fierce.
