Saoirse Ronan Says She “Needed” to Play Jo in Little Women

Saoirse Ronan Little Women

-In her Variety cover story, Saoirse Ronan says “I tapped Greta [Gerwig] on the shoulder and said I heard she was doing Little Women, and that I needed to be Jo.” She says when Gerwig said she had to think about it, she replied “Oh, for f—k’s sake.” Gerwig, however, remembers it a bit differently: “Saoirse told me she was playing Jo.”

Michael B Jordan shot his Esquire cover story at his old high school.

-Speaking of great covers, Queen and Slim’s Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya are on Vibe’s digital cover.

-This is gutting: Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist posted a raw, unflinching 14-minute video on Instagram detailing the abuse she says she suffered at the hands of an ex. Those she doesn’t name her alleged attacker, she claims he once threw an iPhone at her face so hard it tore her iris, and they made up a story about how she tripped and fell on a potted plant. She retold the potted plant story on The Tonight Show and at the time told Jimmy Fallon it happened the day after she landed Supergirl, which — if true — means it would have been in 2015 when she was married to Glee costar Blake Jenner.

Keke Palmer‘s song association video is wonderful. It’s almost as good as her impassioned defense of the movie Titanic.

-I like how many Canada callouts there are in Dan Levy‘s 73 Questions with Vogue video.

-Former Grey’s Anatomy actor Isaiah Washington is getting a show on Fox News’ streaming service. Sounds about right.

-Variety dug deeper into Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough‘s departures from America’s Got Talent. According to their story, when Jay Leno was a guest on the show and allegedly made a racist joke about Koreans, Gabrielle told producers to report the incident to human resources. She also urged producers to cut a white contestant impersonating Beyonce from the lineup. Sources also say Union and Hough received excessive notes on their physical appearance.

-This interview with Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies is a total delight.

-Why is Drake texting Billie Eilish? She’s 17.

-Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi commented on Martin Scorsese‘s controversial Marvel statements: “Maybe it’s too colorful for him.”

Ira is in Toronto, which means his appearance on The Social was perfectly timed for him to drag Justin Timberlake.

-I finally caught up to Sunday’s episode of Watchmen and gah, that show is doing extraordinary things. I’ve liked pretty much every episode (we’re six into its 9-ep run), but this latest one somehow managed to expertly tackle race, class, white-washing and childhood trauma in eye-poppingly creative ways. Every episode seems to spin off a ton of think pieces (as they should), and I’m especially interested in what black critics/writers are saying about it. Here are a few I’m following (if there are others, let me know!):  Soraya Nadia McDonald at The Undefeated, Angelica Jade Bastién at Vulture, Melanie McFarland at Salon, Micah Peters at The Ringer, Joelle Monique at AV Club.

-This interview with the co-writer of the episode is also worth your time.

Summer Walker responded to backlash after showing up three hours late to her Toronto concert and leaving fans waiting out in the cold Monday night.

Jacob Trembly reveals a correspondence with a famous actor in the trailer for Xavier Dolan‘s latest film, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, starring Natalie Portman, Sarah Gadon and Kit Harington.

The Cast of Friends Reunites

-It was a big week for Friends reunions: Courteney Cox had a lunch with Matthew Perry, while Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow hit up a red carpet. (Perry is getting flak for this pic, but he looks way better than he did in pics that surfaced last week.)

Gwyneth Paltrow says she she’s “not sure how she feels” about Harvey Weinstein. “He was a very, very important figure in my life. He was my main boss. He gave me incredible opportunity and yet during that time we had a very, very fraught complicated relationship. Highs and lows. And the postscript to that chapter of my life is where it gets extremely complicated for me, because the information came to light about who he was and how he was behaving that I didn’t know during my already very difficult time with him.” You know what? Fair enough.

Prince William doesn’t seem to be a fan of Olivia Colman. How is that even possible?!?

-Meanwhile, Prince Harry made polite conversation with a person who has two kids and now everyone’s convinced that means he’s gunning for a second baby.

Early reaction to Greta Gerwig‘s Little Women has me very, very excited.

-Fresh Off the Boat has been cancelled. Do you think Constance Wu is somewhere throwing a party right now?

Kanye West claims he’s considering changing his name to Christian Genius Billionaire Kanye West. I hope he’s joking, but who can even tell at this point.

-Aw poop. The Beverly Hills reboot will not return for a second season on Fox. It was way more meta and clever than it had to be.

-If you’re in Toronto, you can buy a whole bunch of furniture and wardrobe from the Suits set. (Nothing Meghan Markle wore, though.)

-I’m going to see Last Christmas this weekend. Is it going to be terrible? Probably. Is Henry Golding going to end up being an angel? Almost certainly. Am I going to love it? Vulture calls it a “loveable mess” so 100% yes.

-This is a really clever cross-promotion in advance of Charlie’s Angels: in a new short filmKristen Stewart and the rest of the cast fight evil with RuPaul‘s Drag Race queens.

Michelle Obama Nails Harry Styles in His 1D

-Twitter is going wild for a video clip from James Corden’s show that featured Michelle Obama hitting Harry Styles in the balls with a dodgeball, proving that sometimes the internet is made for good.

Hannah Gadsby goes no holds barred in her Variety interview, and it’s glorious. “Things that can f— off, or at least deeply reconsider their choices, according to Gadsby: A Star Is Born (“If I woke up and someone I met yesterday was just watching me, they would not have a straight nose”); colonization (“‘manspreading’ is the definition of civilization”); Game of Thrones”(“It’s a fantasy. There are dragons. Why are women getting raped?!”); Taylor Swift (“a can of Coke”).”

-We just got our first look at Greta Gerwig‘s Little Women adaptation and oh yeah, am I here for it.

-I deeply related to Jennifer Lawrence feeling ignored after pal Amy Schumer had a baby. She sent Schumer a series of texts  about The Handmaid’s Tale, and then jokingly blamed the baby when the comedian didn’t respond. “Are you asleep bc of the baby??? Are you asleep before 11?? Is this bc of the baby? Don’t make me resent the baby.”

-Yesterday, the Daily Beast released a story in which eight women accused Hollywood filmmaker Max Landis of emotional and sexual abuse, which follows years of rumours and social media chatter. Director Josh Trank then tweeted: “I 100% believe every word of this article about Max. I banned him from visiting principal photography of Chronicle, and I haven’t spoken to him since 2012.” Since the article broke, his managers have left him and MGM decided not to go ahead with his movie starring Idris Elba.

-Early buzz for Spider-Man: Far From Home is pretty positive.

Angelina Jolie has a new gig: journalist! She’s a contributing editor for Time and will pen monthly articles.

-This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman keeps hinting at a possible Pitch revival and if this doesn’t work out I’ll be really bummed.

-Womp womp. Linsday Lohan’s reality show has been cancelled and her Mykonos nightclub has reportedly closed.

-I never thought I’d say this — but I’m on Bella Thorne‘s side on this one. Whoopi Goldberg basically slut-shamed her for the release of her hacked nudes and blamed her instead of the creepy hacker.

-I saw Men In Black: International last week and as charming as Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are, that this is a mess. Now I know why, thanks to this behind the scenes recount of all the drama. Sony considered turning it into a crossover with 21 Jump Street, and while they were filming the actors were getting new script pages daily, and Thompson and Hemsworth then hired their own dialogue writers.

-In happier Hemsworth news, him singing “Hurt” on the Endgame set is kinda perfect. He was also very cute on The Late Late Show, attempting to be a waiter.

-Yikes. A crew member was reportedly stabbed in the neck on the set of Anne Hathaway’s new movie.

-The trailer for season 3 of Glow looks great. Netflix has been on a real cancelling kick lately, but I hope this show sticks around a bit.

-The Television Critics Association nominations always reflect what I’m watching on TV way more than the Emmys, and this year’s batch is no different. The “individual achievement in a comedy” category is especially strong: Pamela Adlon, Bill Hader, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Natasha Lyonne, Catherine O’Hara, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

-I’m very here for Kirsten Dunst returning to TV in a quirky comedy.

-This Vulture article about romance author Sherrilyn Kenyon, who accused her husband of poisoning her, is a wild ride.

-Ewan McGregor and Jacob Tremblay revisit The Shining universe in the Doctor Sleep trailer.
