Veronica Mars is Coming Back!

-Huzzah! An 8-episode Veronica Mars revival is in the works at Hulu!

–Chris Pine, what are you wearing and how do you possible make that work like you do?!?

-Page Six is firmly in Brad Pitt‘s camp. After today’s hearing, I’m wondering if his visitation will still be supervised only? Why is no one really talking about that?

-I only watched The Fosters for one season, but To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star Noah Centineo is returning for the spin-off and I’m in because PETER KAVINSKY!

-Speaking of Peter Kavinsky, Netflix changed their Twitter bio to reflect our collective obsession. Meanwhile, I liked this piece on the enduring rom com trope of fake boyfriendship.

–Don Cheadle still can’t believe Mark Ruffalo spoiled Avengers: Infinity War in 2017.

–Jennifer Garner got a star on the Walk of Fame, and her former costars Steve Carell, Judy Greer, and Bryan Cranston were on hand. (I saw Garner and Cranston’s movie Wakefield a couple of years ago at TIFF but I don’t think it ever was released. From what I can recall, that was for the best.)

-Netflix renewed Glow for a third season (it feels like the second season just ended but this is still good news. Now if they’d only drop the ill-advised relationship bit they’ve been hinting at…)

-NBC has renewed its summer Amy Poehler/Nick Offerman series Making It for Season 2. I’ve only watched one episode so far but it’s like a small screen endorphin release.

–Drake cancelled his first of three shows in TO to visit a little girl in the hospital in Chicago. That video tho. Gah, the ovaries just took a direct hit!

-HBO just ordered a new comedy from The Leftovers’ Tom Perrotta starring Kathryn Hahn and Casey Wilson, directed by Nicole Holofcener. Yes, please!

-In a NYT op-ed, Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran opened up about the ‘self-hate’ she dealt with after her online harassment.

-The VMAs red carpet made me feel rul rul old. Also, did Pete Davidson’s VMAs bracelet imply he already married Ariana Grande?

-Madonna’s Aretha Franklin tribute at the VMAs is all about Madonna — and people were not happy. She later explained her speech on Instagram: “And just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment.”

-MTV has green lighted a new season of The Hills — but none of the originals you liked will appear.

-The first season of American Vandal was about who drew the dicks? The new season’s central mystery will be about uncovering the identity of the Turd Burglar. (I love this exchange in the trailer: “What if the motive is just that poop is funny?” “Poop IS funny.”)

-Danny Boyle — the only reason to get excited about the new James Bond film — has dropped out of directing.

-Critical reception to HBO’s Sharper Objects has been mixed, but last week’s episode really turned me off. Not every female journalist in pop culture needs to sleep with their source. It’s such a lazy, dump trope.

-Harvey Weinstein is now being sued by a woman alleging he raped her at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. The suit claims he “bragged that he had recently received a negative result from an HIV test. Then, over her continued protests, he removed the condom he had been wearing and continued to rape her.”

–Asia Argento denied a report that she sexually assaulted a 17-year-old and says the settlement was Anthony Bourdain‘s idea to make the allegations go away. Man, I really wish she’d left Bourdain out of all this.

-In Hold the Dark, (which debuts at TIFF before screening on Netflix) Jeffrey Wright plays a wolf expert who tracks down the wolves who killed a young boy. Riley Keough and Alexander Skarsgard play the boy’s parents.

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin Enjoy An Ice Cream Date in Canada

–Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin were spotted in his hometown of Stratford, Ont. this weekend.

-Did Chloë Grace Moretz imply that she found out about then-boyfriend Brooklyn Beckham kissing Playboy model Lexi Wood through push notifications? She told The Sunday Times, “Breakups are hard across the board. But when every verified account on Twitter posts something about me, I get tagged. And every major publication is verified. So anytime they post something about a certain relationship, it pops up on my phone, which is how I find out about 90% of things.”

-Chloë also thinks her shelved Louis C.K. film ‘should just go away‘, which makes a lot of sense.

–Robin Wright and Clement Giraudet got married in a low-key ceremony over the weekend.

–Ruby Rose is the latest star to be hounded off social media after a fan backlash. Stupid fandoms.

-Celebrities are tweeting their love for Aretha Franklin, who is reportedly very ill.

-I watched the Teen Choice Awards last night and felt INCREDIBLY. OLD.  There were so many Youtube “stars”, guys!

-Not that we should look to Lindsay Lohan for sane, measured takes on real-world issues, but she still probably shouldn’t have implied that when women speak out against sexual harassment and assault, “it makes them look weak.”

–Chris Hardwick started last night’s Talking Dead episode by tearfully addressing the sexual assault and abuse claims made against him. Not surprisingly, he didn’t mention the several staffers who resigned in protest. Watch the video of him crying here, if that’s your thing.

-Meanwhile, the Nerdist website continues to distance itself from Hardwick.

–Stephen Colbert says there was no pushback from CBS when he discussed Les Moonves on The Late Show. “As soon as I heard the article came out, I knew that I’d have to talk about it on Monday night because we talk about everything. That’s kind of all I worked on that Monday was what I wanted to say, and about a half an hour before we taped we told CBS. We said ‘We’re gonna do this, and we’re going to do this.’ And there was no pushback. Nobody said a damn thing.”

–Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine are in a financial deadlock with Paramount that could end with them leaving the Star Trek franchise.

-Crazy Rich Asian star Awkwafina shared the story of how a music video she uploaded to YouTube called “My Vag” helped kick off her career.

-A bunch of British actresses depict how brutal the audition process can be.

–This is a good take on Disney’s latest casting controversy.

-I am so very here for Amanda Bynes’ comeback. I always liked that kid and am rooting for her.

-Follow with me now: DL Hughley says he once had an affair and she got pregnant, and he prayed the baby would go away, but then the child was murdered at nine months by his mistresses’ boyfriend, and then DL’s wife found out years later and felt bad and began paying the mistress.

-This list of movies that Tom Cruise reportedly passed on is fascinating.

–Nicki Minaj just released the music video for “Ganja Burn,” and it centers around a tale of biblical-level beef.

–Lupita Nyong’o and Saoirse Ronan hang out in beautiful apartments to sell perfume for Calvin Klein.

-The new Happytime Murders red band trailer is so incredibly NSFW, which is weird considering that all the dirty parts involve puppets.

 

Hedley’s Jacob Hoggard Facing Sexual Assault Charges

-Whoa. Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard was just arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm and one count of sexual interference. It’s unclear whether these stem from the same allegations that surfaced in Feb, which he denied at the time.

-Guardians of the Galaxy’ stars Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, and Chris Pratt all jumped to James Gunn‘s defense on Twitter this weekend. I wonder if they all came to it separately or if this is a coordinated push?

-Meanwhile, Selma Blair and Sarah Silverman are supporting a petition to rehire him.

-Also, this is an interesting take on Disney’s bad faith argument. Of course people should face consequences for doing stupid stuff and I’m not convinced he should be rehired, but a lot about this smells funny.

–Pete Davidson reportedly proposed to Ariana Grande while smoking weed in bed. This just gets better and better…

-Tiffany Haddish and Common may be a thing, and I’m here for it.

-This pair surprises me: 2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs married Mad Men’s Michael Gladis.

-I’m not sure that I believe this story about how Meghan Markle wanted to wear a Stella McCartney tuxedo-style suit to an evening event on the Australian tour, and it was vetoed by Prince Harry. That doesn’t sound very Harry-esque.

–R Kelly spends 19 minutes confessing that he is a terrible human being who does terrible things on his new song “I Admit It,” and his fans are still all “wow, great melody!” (The Onion’s take is the best take.)

-Meanwhile, could what he says in the song be considered evidence? It’s a grey area, but a lawyer says “If I was his lawyer I would have advised him not to write this song.” I’m guessing lawyers would advise him not to do a lot of the things he does…

-Jesus Christ. Charlamagne and his wife both admitted that the first time they had sex, he raped her.

–Lindsay Lohan‘s management style is something else.

-I love this praise for The Good Fight’s title sequence. It’s probably the only one that I never FF through.

-Ohhhh boy. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer series reboot with a black lead is in the works from Joss Whedon and Monica Owusu-Breen. I have a lot of feelings about this. On one hand, as problematic as Whedon is I still adore the original (I truly believe that watching Buffy Summers and Dana Scully kick ass every week when I was young and impressionable shaped who I am). But why retread old ideas? And if you HAVE to do a Buffy series, why not a sequel with new characters instead of a reboot? No series has ever ended with such a perfect sequel setup: Buffy’s actions prompted slayer powers to be awakened in girls all over the world. It’s *right there*!!

–Kanye West is “doing ok” after being hospitalized for the flu.

-Black-ish star Anthony Anderson is denying a woman who says he assaulted her after she catered one of his events.

-This is a good take on how Johnny Depp’s latest lawsuit reveals how Hollywood productions enable abusive behavior.

-Meanwhile, I was surprised that Warner Bros doubled down on Depp at the Fantastic Beasts panel during Comic-Con this weekend.

–This tweet about Chris Pine’s look at Comic Con pretty much sums it up for me: “Chris Pine styles himself like a middle aged woman who brunches and I’m profoundly into it.”

-The Halloween panel got surprisingly emotional when the Q&A portion started and a man stood up and told his story of survival during a home invasion. “I was scared out of my mind and out of nowhere this thought inside of me went, ‘Well, what would Jamie Lee Curtis do?’…To make a long story short, I’m here today because of the way that you portrayed Lauri Strode. I’m a victor today instead of a victim.”

-A young fan managed to out-sass a sassy Ryan Reynolds at Comic-Con.

-The Good Place didn’t show any new footage at their Comic-Con panel, but this cast interview is great. And they released bloopers!

-A ton of TV shows did release new TV footage though, including Arrow, The Walking Dead, Riverdale, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Better Call Saul, The Gifted, Roswell New Mexico and Star Trek: Discovery. Click here for my roundup.

-On the movie side, we got new trailers for Aquaman, Glass, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, Fantastic Beasts and more. I can’t believe I’m saying this but the one that won me over the most is Shazam (with Godzilla coming in a close second, which was also a surprise).
