Rob Lowe Comes Clean

Rob-Lowe-Variety-Addiction-and-Recovery-Cover

Variety’s second annual Recovery issue features Rob Lowe, who reflects on how Hollywood’s attitude towards illicit drug use has changed from when he was coming up: “This was just how the business was back then. Cocaine was the thing that successful people did. There was always that wonderful moment when as an active drug abuser you’d go on the set and figure out which department was selling the coke on the set. It was no different than craft services. Where are the Red Vines, and where is the great Peruvian blow? Those days are long, long, loooong gone.”

-Singer Phoebe Bridgers says Marilyn Manson once bragged to her about his “rape room”: “I went to Marilyn Manson’s house when I was a teenager with some friends. I was a big fan. He referred to a room in his house as the ‘r*pe room’, I thought it was just his horrible frat boy sense of humor. I stopped being a fan. I stand with everyone who came forward.”

-This is a good piece on how Evan Rachel Wood has used Instagram this week: not only to come forward with her allegations against Manson, but to instruct other accusers how to go to the police — and to indict past media coverage of him.

-Vanity Fair takes a deep dive into deuxmoi, Instagram’s accidental gossip queen. Hollywood is trying to unmask her (and this article’s writer thinks she has, but keeps the name to herself) while her type of reporting continues to draw eyeballs in this party-less, red carpet-less celebrity vacuum we’re all living in these days.

-As part of the British Vogue cover story, Angelina Jolie did a “what’s in my bag?” video. There’s also a new photo of her and the kids watching the TV on election night.

-In news that will surprise no one, Variety is citing “multiple well-placed sources” that Armie Hammer was asked to leave those two high-profile projects he recently exited.  His camp is circling the wagons in this article, with a source close to the actor telling Variety “He has never eaten human flesh, he has never drank blood, he has never cut off a toe, he has never locked anybody in a cage, or whatever else is in these crazy messages. These messages definitely shouldn’t be taken literally – even if he did text them.”

-Law & Order: Organized Crime, which features the return of Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler, will premiere April 1.

-Even a writer on Emily in Paris thinks I May Destroy You should have been nominated.

-The SAG Awards nominations came out today, and are much more reasonable.

-Here’s a good rundown of the movies that generated the most buzz at this year’s Sundance. Passing is the one I keep hearing about. The premise doesn’t seem like something Rebecca Hall would be the best person to tackle, but the reviews are strong.

-It looks like Nick Cannon has been forgiven for his anti-semitic comments. ViacomCBS has reestablished their working relationship.

-Meanwhile, Cannon has tested positive for covid and Niecy Nash will fill in as host of The Masked Singer.

-Southern Charm’s Madison LeCroy insists she only talked on the phone with A-Rod and never had a physical relationship with him, but the genie is out of the bottle.

-Disney+ will drop Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston next week — and I was NOT expecting the excitement about this on my TL. How did I not know how beloved this movie is?

-This is a great interview with Owen Wilson, who says Jeff Goldblum changed his outlook on life. “He’s just this very positive person. Even “positive” isn’t a strong enough word…Sometimes you meet people who aren’t interested in bonding over shared dislikes. They only want to connect over things they’re excited about, not giving into any kind of negative stuff. I remember that about Jeff, even though we didn’t work together that much — I just appreciate how he was.”

-I don’t watch Riverdale, but the preview for next week — when the show jumps seven(!) years into the future — seems awesomely bonkers.

Emily Hampshire will play Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman in a remake of the Norman Lear series. Yes Hollywood, please start casting Schitt’s Creek stars in everything.

-I’m not surprised that Renee Zelleweger is making the jump to TV. I am surprised that it’s network TV. She’ll star in an NBC show based on a true crime podcast.

-Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes. I wonder if they’ll keep the book’s absolutely insane twist ending…

Evan Rachel Wood Names Marilyn Manson as Her Abuser

Evan Rachel Wood has accused her ex-fiancé Marilyn Manson of grooming and abusing her for years. The actress has been vocal about being a domestic violence survivor and it was generally suspected that her abuser was Manson, but she has never named him until now, saying ““I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man & call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives.” In a show of solidarity, at least four other women posted their own allegations against Manson.

-An interview with Spin back in 2009 is coming back to haunt him, in which he admitted to exhibiting abusive behavior against Wood.

-In the wake of the new allegations (which he has denied in the past), AMC says that a segment of the horror anthology Creepshow featuring Manson will no longer air as planned. He was also just dropped by his music label.

Dustin Diamond, who played Screech on Saved By The Bell, has passed away at 44, just weeks after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. His former Bell costars are paying tribute.

Meghan Markle’s full name was removed from son Archie’s birth certificate. Instead, she is referred to as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex, which UK tabloids assumed was somehow her way of sticking it to the royals. She has since made it clear that it wasn’t her decision, but instead was dictated by the palace. Man, they will do anything to erase her, huh?

Prince Harry has won “substantial damages” from Associated Newspapers, the publisher of The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline, over claims that he “turned his back” on the military.

-Armie Hammer’s estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers, has made her first public comments since he came under fire for his alleged DMs. She posting on Instagram: “I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know. I support any victim of assault or abuse and urge anyone who has experienced this pain to seek the help she or he needs to heal.”

Noah Centineo has been cast in an untitled Netflix film about the Wall Street chaos from GameStop’s stock skyrocketing due to Reddit. Which is wild because the drama is still happening! Also this article says “Scott Galloway to consult.” Ah yes, the man who took to Twitter to blame all this on women not keeping guys in check.

-Even more wild: there’s not 1…not 2…but THREE projects in development revolving around the GameStop stock saga on Wall Street.

-Ruh roh. A movie that’s doing well on the festival circuit is accused of being a shot-for-shot ripoff of a graphic novel.

-Gah. There’s a Frasier revival being eyed for Paramount’s streaming service. Yes, why give new stars and voices a shot when we can just keep propping up already rich and establish talent?

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett have made a new album together, recorded through Tony’s battle with Alzheimer’s. This bit from the AP interview with them is giving everyone emotions.

Sir Patrick Stewart moderated a virtual Q&A session with Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy and got to geek out.

-The reviews of Netflix’s Firefly Lane — starring Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl as two friends through the ages — are not good. At all.

Ryan Coogler will make a Wakanda series for Disney+, which sounds amazing.

-The latest episode of Disney+’s WandaVision began to answer the most important question: What’s outside of Westview? It also featured it features Kat Dennings and Randall Park reprising their Marvel roles, and an terrifying look at the end of The Blip.

-Also, this was a perfect callback.

-As much as I enjoyed that episode, I wasn’t one of those people clamoring for a faster pace and more answers. This is a good article on the pushback, asking if we’ve all forgotten how to watch TV?

Benedict Cumberbatch plays a salesman recruited by MI6 during the Cold War in the Courier trailer.

Katherine Heigl Is Done Being Shunned

-This is an interesting interview with Katherine Heigl, in which she talks about how her “difficult” label crushed her career. On one hand, she made some valid points about Knocked Up at the time and the world owes her an apology about the backlash (same with Megan Fox re: her comments about Michael Bay). On the other hand, rumours about her and her mother’s behaviour on set were legendary.  In any case, her 27 Dresses costar James Marsden has her back, saying in the article: “She has very strong convictions and strong opinions on certain things, and she doesn’t back down from letting you know if she feels like she’s been wronged in any way. I’ve always seen that as just strength of character.”

Machine Gun Kelly is performing on SNL this weekend and Megan Fox joined him on his way to rehearsals — where she was spotted wearing what looks like an engagement ring.

-Whoever is doing Mariah Carey‘s social strategy continues to crush it.

T.I. and Tiny are denying the rumours that surfaced on social media this week, alleging the couple drugged and assaulted women. They released a statement: “Mr. and Mrs. Harris want to be on record and more importantly want the public to know they emphatically deny in the strongest way possible the egregiously appalling allegations being made against them by Sabrina Peterson. The Harrises have had difficulty with this woman for well over a decade. They are taking this matter very seriously.”

Amy Schumer still doesn’t really understand how she ended up in the drama involving Hilaria Baldwin.

-The two stars of Pen15 are both pregnant, which should make for an interesting new season.

Anne Hathaway has joined Jared Leto in a new Apple TV+ series about the spectacular rise and fall of WeWork. Let’s hope he doesn’t welcome her to the cast by sending her a dead rat.

-In today’s Actors on Actors interview, Amanda Seyfried tells Vanessa Kirby: “I wish I could redo ‘Les Miz’ completely, because the whole live singing aspect just — I still have nightmares about it”.

-This is a great tribute to Cicely Tyson, who passed away yesterday. Lenny Kravitz, who was her godson, also posted a lovely tribute.

-Vanity Fair has gotten wind of Jessica Mulroney’s interview the National Post from last week. Unlike most Canadians, they seem unaware of the columnist and her, um, reputation.

-This oral history of the Super Bowl episode of Friends is packed with juicy tidbits! Brooke Shields‘ then-boyfriend Andre Agassi yelled at her after her dinner scene with Matt Leblanc (“I see him come down, pull Brooke aside and eviscerate her because he’s crazy-jealous. She’s reduced to tears! I broke the show for awhile, and the girls took Brooke aside and loved her, took care of her and got her back on that stage. She did great because of the support of those three. He was a jackass”). Matthew Perry flirted over fax with Julia Roberts. (“She was giving him these questionnaires like, “Why should I go out with you?” And everyone in the writers room helped him explain to her why.”) Chris Isaak couldn’t really act (“Such a swell guy. But his scenes with Phoebe? It was like working with a salmon”). Jean-Claude Van Damme showed up hours late and was too aggressive in his kissing scenes (“Having completely blown up our shooting day, we had to scramble. Then he’s unprepared and arrogant!”)

Tim Robbins has filed for divorce from Gratiela Brancusi — whom no one knew he was married to.

-The Armie Hammer stories continue to be messed up.

-I actually didn’t believe this was Demi Moore in the Fendi show until she posted the clip herself. But she’s since been photographed not looking … like that. Was it just contouring?

-Cyberpunk developers are asking players to please stop having sex with the Keanu Reeves avatar. What’s the point of playing, then?

Nick Robinson plays the founder of the darknet website Silk Road in a new trailer.
