Blake Shelton Responds After Racist, Homophobic Tweets Resurface

in-touch-blake-shelton

Blake Shelton went on the defensive after some terrible tweets he posted in 2009 and 2011 resurfaced earlier this week, blaming his inappropriate sense of humour. The Voice is also in damage control mode, reportedly asking outlets to not cover it in exchange for continued access to the show. Yes, blackmail should totally help this situation.

-Now Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez are taking their TMI to Snapchat. Goodie.

-THR has the scoop on what really went down between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel:  On Aug. 8, Johnson was ready to shoot one of his final scenes with Diesel on Fast 8, and Diesel was in his trailer keeping everyone waiting. But an onset source says “this was how Vin has run things for the past several movies” and everyone’s been pretty much resigned to it, so Johnson’s public rant “blindsided” everyone.

-Us Weekly Claims Tom Cruise has had “essentially no contact” with Suri for about three years. If true, that’s incredibly sad. I wonder if the church has deemed her and/or Katie SPs?

-Meanwhile, Katie and Jamie Foxx were spotted backstage at a Barbra Streisand concert.

Amber Heard‘s lawyers retracted that statement claiming she’s “vindicated” in the court of opinion. (They’re not wrong, tho.)

-Meanwhile, Billy Bob Thorton would like to erase himself from the narrative.

Renee Zellweger denied a magazine claim that she talked to penguins — and then the writer denied her denial. Journalism!

Diana Ross took out a full-page ad congratulating her daughter Tracee on her Emmy nom, which is all kinds of sweet.

-Stepbrothers costars Will Ferrell and John C Reilly will reunite for a new Sherlock Holmes comedy.

-THR’s cover story with Oprah and Ava DuVernay on their push for inclusion instead of diversity is so smart and thoughtful. This quote from O is basically the 100 emoji: “I realized that the best way to show that black people are just like everybody else, or that gay people are just like everybody else, is not to do a show about gay people or black fathers raising their children [but] just to include them in a story about raising children. That’s how you normalize it and make it OK for everybody else.”

Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger were photographed hanging out and now my brain/heart hurts. Also, he smokes? You’re killing me, Pacey!

-This is a fascinating article about the questionable donors to Leonardo Dicaprio‘s charity. He has “a notable habit of buddying up with smooth dudes who end up in federal prison.”

Taylor Swift flew Tom Hiddleston to Rhode Island on her private jet for a reunion — but she also gave $1 million to help Louisiana flood victims so she pretty much gets a pass on everything from me this week.

-Now that Hulu has lost the rights to all of CW’s superhero shows, they decided to make their own, tapping the creators of Gossip Girl for an adaptation of Marvels’ Runaways.

-Now it sounds like The Flash and Supergirl will come together for TWO musical crossover episodes this season. This makes me nervous. Both of those shows still have to find their footing before getting all stunt-y.

-There’s more talk about how the studio is going to market Birth of a Nation in the face of the Nate Parker controversy. No one is giving him a pass.

Jonah Hill shot down rumours that he feuded on set with Miles Teller while shooting War Dogs.

Chris Pratt should promote every magazine he’s in exactly like this.

Amy Schumer tweeted that she is “disappointed” in writer Kurt Metzger after his comments on a rape scandal, and he no longer works for her. Wait, she’s JUST NOW disappointed? Because he’s been pulling this crap for years.

Cynthia Nixon plays Emily Dickinson in the trailer for A Quiet Passion, which is coming to TIFF.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp Reach Settlement

amber-heard-bruises-photos

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have reportedly reached a $7 million divorce settlement out of court. It’s much more than she was originally asking for, but considering all the shit that was released this week, it makes sense that he’d pay what he needed to make this go away quickly. Their joint statement is pretty telling, too.

-Meanwhile, Amber‘s camp is denying rumours she had an affair with Billy Bob Thorton. Cause, you know, THAT was the most interesting tidbit to come out of the story about Depp cutting his finger and smearing the wall with blood in front of her.

-Pour one out for Justin Bieber‘s Instagram account, which he shut down following all that poo volleying between him and Selena Gomez.

-There’s lots more reaction to Nate Parker‘s interview about his 1999 sexual assault charge, and how that might affect Birth of a Nation’s upcoming TIFF premiere and its Oscar chances. I’ll tell you this, after reading the call transcript between him and the victim (who falsely claimed to be pregnant, in an attempt to get him to identify the other guy in the room that night), I pretty much have zero desire to support that film. “”I can’t control your drinking…I don’t know exactly how drunk you were.” Horrific.

-Oh god. This story just got a million times worse. The accuser’s brother just revealed that she killed herself in 2012. JFC.

Ellen DeGeneres is defending herself against racism allegations following her Usain Bolt tweet.

-Today’s mantra: Please don’t be Britney. Please don’t be Britney. Please don’t be Britney.

-In happier news, she’s officially confirmed to perform at the VMAs for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Anna Paquin is now set star in CBC’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace, written and produce by Sarah Polley. I’m going to try to repress my angsty 12th grader hatred of that book and watch this thing.

-Netflix’s boss says he decided to release Gilmore Girls all at once instead of the staggered type of release they’re trying with shows like The Get Down because “I’m petrified of those fans.” Makes sense.

Robert Downey Jr and Nic Pizzolatto are eyeing a TV show at HBO. The project may be based on Downey’s long-gestating Perry Mason reboot, but I want RDJ to stay away from Nic’s True Detective-ness.

Lin-Manuel Miranda has signed up for Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid, while Keira Knightley will be a sugarplum fairy in the live-action Nutcracker.

-God, I love this Winona Ryder magazine cover.

Caitlyn Jenner‘s E! show I Am Cait has been cancelled after two seasons.

John Krasinski has just signed on as the TV action hero in Amazon’s Jack Ryan series.

-Speaking of John, I spent more time at the Sicario screening last year trying to sneak glimpses of him in the row in front of me than watching the actual movie, which means I should probably not try to get tickets for Denis Villeneuve‘s latest film. The full trailer looks good, though.

Chris Evans’ Puppy Pushups

John Krasinski challenged Chris Evans and Miles Teller (ugh) to the #22PushUpChallenge, and Chris’ response features the most adorable dog distraction ever!

-You know what’s nuts? After that totally gross video that came out on Friday of Johnny Depp hurling a wine glass at Amber Heard, I still saw people on Twitter cape for him. I don’t get it. Let’s see what they say now that TMZ is reporting he once accidentally cut off the tip of his finger while fighting with her, then wrote on the wall in blood “Billy Bob” – the name of the actor he was accusing her of cheating on him with. Charming.

-Also, I appreciated this article on how Heard and Lindsay Lohan suffer from being imperfect victims.

Justin Bieber has threatened to make his Instagram private if commenters don’t stop attacking his new lady, Sofia Richie (who is Lionel Richie‘s daughter. You know who I found out this weekend is NOT actually Lionel Richie’s daughter? Nicole Richie. #MindBlown)

Justin‘s pleas for civility somehow led to a pissing contest between him and Selena Gomez, with her insinuating he cheated — and him shooting back with “oh I forgot about you and Zayn?” Not surprisingly, their fans spent the weekend having meltdowns.

Thomas Gibson is reporting mulling a lawsuit over his Criminal Minds firing. I guess that explains why his statement didn’t include an apology.

-Meanwhile, his ex-costar Shemar Moore is subtweeting him. (Also, I’m now going to end every Instagram video with “church is over.”)

Jared Padalecki got bad service from a waitress — so he posted a photo of her face to his 3M followers. And then he defended the post by comparing people who say he shouldn’t complain to people who say he shouldn’t be depressed. Nope, nope, all the nopes. You don’t get to play any of those cards, Dean.

This is a great read about how Mr Robot isn’t getting the critical reception this summer of Netflix shows like Stranger Things and The Get Down, but at least it’s trying something completely different.

-Speaking of Stranger Things, this interview/lovefest between Aaron Paul and the little girl who plays Eleven is all kinds of adorable. And then his wife jumps on the phone so she can fangirl too? Kill me now.

-Bad word of mouth resulted in a huge Batman V Superman-like box office drop in Suicide Squad’s second weekend. So why is WB still heavily investing in Zack Snyder’s vision of the DCEU?

-Lowly movie studio employees are rising up. First we got last week’s open letter to the WB and now the comments section of an interview with the directors of Sausage Party was overrun with anonymous sources claiming animators were reportedly forced to work for free and generally treated like poo. (I saw the film over the weekend. I thought it was just meh.)

Tom Hiddleston is blaming the deluge of photos of him with Taylor Swift on the fact that “we all live in a world where every phone has a camera.” Sure, but do we also all live in a world where everyone has long-lensed professional cameras on remote beaches?

The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore was canceled today, which sucks because they’re not even going to get to cover the election. It’s not exactly surprising giving its lack of ratings and buzz.  Wilmore released a statement about “The Unblackening” of the Comedy Network.

-This is weak sauce: Adele says she was approached by the Super Bowl to do the next halftime show and declined, so the NFL and Pepsi ran to Billboard with a statement about how there was no “formal” offer. Yeah. Because she declined.

Bella Thorne and Gregg Sulkin split after more than a year together. I have no idea who either of these people are, but my Twitter timeline is devastated. Sorry?

-Congrats to Kevin Hart, who married longtime girlfriend Eniko Parrish on Saturday.

Natalie Portman gushing about French women sounds like me every time I visit France.

-Is it weird that these photos make me want to party with Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus?

-This is such a good look at Nate Parker’s problematic past and how that may (or should?) change our view of Birth of a Nation.

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are oh so pretty in the Allied trailer.

-The untold story of NASA’s genius black women gets the spotlight in the Hidden Figures trailer, starring Taraji P. Henson.
