Empire Star Jussie Smollett Victim of Suspected Hate Crime

-People are awful. Empire star Jussie Smollett was has been hospitalized after a horrific attack. He was walking down the street when two men reportedly approached him, started harassing him with homophobic slurs, put a rope around his neck, threw bleach on him and screamed “This is MAGA country.” The FBI has now taken over the case after it was confirmed the actor received an earlier threat.

-Hollywood is rallying around Smollett and calling for justice.

-Slope scares: Gwyneth Paltrow is being sued for allegedly causing injuries to a doctor after he said she crashed into him while skiing.

-Ellen staged a mini Friends reunion with Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox.

-In a new podcast, Thora Birch said she wants American Beauty fans to see past the “stain” of Kevin Spacey. “It shouldn’t be on the film. Who’s to blame? It’s Kevin. It doesn’t have anything to do with American Beauty.” K, but it’s still a terrible movie that has NOT aged well.

-This Bradley Cooper interaction with comedian Luenell at the SAGs made me like him a lot more than I did.

-Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan reveals she’s been secretly married to Jason Ralph for years. Is it a secret or did people just not care?

-No really though, how many wedding celebrations are Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra gonna have??

-F*ck Jake Gyllenhaal.

-Every time I see another clip from Bohemian Rhapsody, I get more angry. And I still haven’t watched it! I wanted to see all the nominated films before the Oscars but I don’t think I can do this one. I’ll end up setting the theatre on fire. Why are the SO. MANY. CUTS.

Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid will be reportedly be subpoenaed over their Fyre Festival payments. I’m not surprised. Watching the documentaries, it was very strange how the “influencers” were just let off the hook.

Richard E Grant fangirling over Babs a delight. I saw Can You Ever Forgive Me? last weekend and I would totally be ok with him winning the Supporting Actor Oscar.

-God, I’m so here for the Zombieland sequel.

Tessa Thompson announced Time’s Up’s 4% challenge, which aims to boost the number of women directing top Hollywood films.

-That “leaked” list of supposed Grammy winners is fake. So you’ll have to tune in on Feb 10 and pretend that those awards are still relevant just like the rest of us.

-Suits may be ending, but the goddess Gina Torres is getting her own spinoff. Here’s the trailer.

Chris Brown Denies Rape Allegations

Chris Brown has been released from custody in Paris with no charges after being detained after a 24-year-old woman accused him of raping her in his hotel room last week. He denied the allegations in an Instagram post. The Paris prosecutor’s office said the investigation is ongoing.

-According to People, Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron met six months ago on a commercial shoot and haven’t seen each other since. We knew that was too good to be true.

-Ooh boy. Taraji P Henson posted an IG story that implied she’s mad there are hashtags about muting R Kelly but none about muting Harvey Weinstein. But the “mute” thing trended because Kelly’s a musician. And Weinstein’s already being “muted” cause he is on trial, no?

-In terms of Oscar noms, it was a great morning for Black Panther, Roma and The Favourite, but not so great for Crazy Rich Asians and If Beale Street Could Talk. Bradley Cooper should be happy for his acting nod, but you just know that he’s burning about being snubbed in the Best Director category. Check out more Oscar snubs and surprises.

-I’m surprised it took so long for these questions to start coming, but Rami Malek was asked whether he has any “regrets” about working with Bryan Singer on Bohemian Rhapsody. “I think that the allegations and things were, believe it or not, honestly something I was not aware of, and that is what it is.” Hmmmmm….

-Also, did Esquire’s big exposé on Singer get squashed? Now the Bohemian Rhapsody is up for Best Picture, this would be the time to print it. If it doesn’t get publishing in the next couple of weeks, I’m guessing it was blocked.

Anna Wintour shared her thoughts on Meghan Markle’s Givenchy wedding gown , saying it was “sophisticated, it was chic, it was grown up. It was an English designer, albeit one that was working for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world: ‘Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong.'”

Azealia Banks called Grimes a ‘brittleboned methhead’ who smells ‘like a roll of nickels’. But how do you *really* feel?

-In an appearance on Ellen, the Anne Hathaway said that she made the decision to stop drinking for the next 18 years because she doesn’t want to be hungover around her kid. “I’m going to stop drinking while my son is in the house just because I don’t totally don’t love the way I do it and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the morning.” Also, her and Fred Savage were really good at the Head’s Up game.

Tessa Thompson attended the Chanel show at Paris Haute Couture Week SS19 with a purse necklace. Oh god, I just got used to fanny packs!

-Russian Doll is the next Netflix show that every critic I follow is loving. It stars Natasha Lyonne as a woman stuck in a Groundhog Day/Happy Death Day loop, and it premieres next Friday.

Sarah Jesscia Parker recreated the Sex and the City opener for a charity campaign.

-Wait, there’s a new Nancy Drew?

Chris Pratt Is Engaged to Katherine Schwarzenegger

-Is anyone at all surprised by Chris Pratt’s engagement news? They’ve been subtly planting the seeds in the press for a while (pretty much shortly after they met at Justin Bieber‘s Zoe Church in L.A. ) Also, that photo he chose is so deeply unflattering.

-The Critics’ Choice Awards were last night, and I liked what some people wore there better than what they wore to the Golden Globes (Constance Wu, Charlize Theron, Sandra Oh), while I am very confused why some people (Julie Roberts, Amy Adams) basically did a repeat of what they wore last weekend.

-Also last night: Rami Malek finally got his moment with Nicole Kidman.

-The Critics’ Choice Awards handing Roma the big prize is upping its buzz. I’m still not a huge fan (it’s clearly a technical masterpiece but it also left me cold), but Guillermo del Toro’s Twitter thread on why he loves it is very persuasive.

Meghan Markle reportedly told some children at today’s event that her due date is in April, and they’re not going to find out the gender beforehand.

Kylie Jenner has been beaten by a picture of an egg for the most-liked Instagram post ever. 2019 is already wild, y’all.

-Winter is coming — in the middle of April. HBO released a longer teaser and announced that Game of Thrones’ final season will premiere April 14.

-Speaking of HBO, last night’s True Detective premiere did way better in the ratings than I assumed it would.

-I loved that Kayleigh Donaldson’s Twitter thread outed an Instagram “influencer’s” scam conference and got the remaining dates shut down. (Donaldson hosts a really good industry podcast called The Hollywood Read if you’re looking for something interesting to stick in your ear holes.)

-Speaking of industry rumbling, the Academy is now fighting with its largest branch — SAG-AFTRA, who is calling out the Oscars for trying to prevent talent from presenting at other award shows using “intimidation.” Remember last year when the Academy added all those young, diverse voters and we had such hope? Between this and the hosting debacle, what happened?

Brad Pitt is hitting the Oscar trail for If Beale Street Could Talk (which I finally saw and LOVED). His Plan B production company is on quite a streak.

Miley Cyrusbirthday post to Liam Hemsworth is incredibly sweet. It’s weird how much I’m rooting for these two.

-Huh, all those blind items might be onto something. Tidal is under investigation in Norway over “fake streams.”

Travis Scott say he agreed to perform at the Super Bowl with Maroon 5 on the condition the NFL would make a $500,000 donation to his charity of choice (but people don’t seem impressed).

-It turns out that if you want to interest me in a Perry Mason reboot, putting it on HBO and casting Matthew Rhys is the lead pretty much does it.

-I love that Mindy Kaling retweeted this amazing thread of Kelly Kapoor as Pride & Prejudice characters.

-Speaking of great Twitter threads, I’m late to the game but last week HBO gave out Sopranos-inspired nicknames to any celeb/verified who asked for one, and it was amazing.

Tom Hardy and his wife Charlotte Riley have had a baby boy –– but despite reports they didn’t name him after Forrest Gump. Whew!

Ryan Coogler sounds awesome. Women who worked with him on the set of Black Panther said he created an environment where they could “cut past any of the normal bureaucracy of male dominance.”

-There is a new movie coming out starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn and I have never nope’d anything harder.

-In the Little Woods trailerTessa Thompson must return to the dangerous life she thought she’d left behind.
