Doja Cat Chats with Missy Elliott about Pop Superstardom

Doja Cat laying on a white bed with one leg raised on the cover of Interview Magazine

Doja Cat is on the September cover of Interview Magazine. She chats with Missy Elliott about writer’s block, rapping vs singing, and pulling back from social media.

-In their Billboard cover interview, BTS responded to questions regarding allegations that their fans’ activity amounts to chart manipulation. “It’s a fair question,” BTS member RM said. “But if there is a conversation inside Billboard about what being No. 1 should represent, then it’s up to them to change the rules and make streaming weigh more on the ranking…Slamming us or our fans for getting to No. 1 with physical sales and downloads, I don’t know if that’s right…It just feels like we’re easy targets because we’re a boy band, a K-pop act, and we have this high fan loyalty.”

Beanie Feldstein and Monica Lewinski teamed up for THR’s new cover story.

-Hacks costars Paul W. Downs and Meg Stalter recreated classic TV duos (including Mulder & Scully, Don & Peggy, Walt & Jesse, and Buffy & Giles) for their Esquire photoshoot. I love everything about this!

Zoe Kravitz and Channing Tatum are buying toilet paper together, so this might be more serious than we thought.

-Also, the fact that he follows a bunch of her fan accounts on Instagram is hilarious.

-This is a good look at how Ryan Reynolds (and undoubtedly a team of social media strategists) marketed Free Guy to keep it fresh in audiences’ minds throughout its many delays.

Letitia Wright was released from the hospital after suffering minor injuries while filming a stunt on the set of Black Panther 2.

-ABC’s reboot of The Wonder Years now has a trailer... with a little help from Don Cheadle.

-I liked this piece about how the Ted Lasso backlash “is the fault of the out-of-season, mega-sentimental, momentum-halting Christmas episode,” and the (undeserved) criticism would be much quieter if the series dropped all at once, because we’ve all forgotten how to watch serialized TV. “This is what serialization has always been about! That’s the whole deal! It’s what TV always was! But once we get used to the have-it-all model, the absence becomes distinctly uncomfortable, especially when the show itself is toying with occasionally uneasy mixes of TV structures.”

-I also liked this article on why romance readers are responding to the show. As I mentioned yesterday, it’s got all classic the tropes.

R. Kelly allegedly said he was a ‘genius’ and therefore he should get to date young girls.

Lil Nas X‘s debut album is dropping Sept 17.

-Meanwhile, he (rightly) questioned why Tony Hawk’s new skateboard with his blood on it is not getting the same reaction Lil Nas X’s shoes with blood in them did.

Tom Cruise screened the first 13 minutes of his new Top Gun movie at CinemaCon, and the audience loved it. It included his motorcycle cliff jump that required a year of training.

-Time’s Up CEO Tina Tchen has resigned over her connection to Andrew Cuomo.

-This is a good article on how The Other Two (returning tonight!) was set for an encore after coming off its critically acclaimed first season. Then came the pandemic.

Rosie O’Donnell answered every question Vulture had about Sleepless in Seattle.

Kristen Stewart‘s Princess Diana film Spencer just released its first trailer. It’s like the studio knows the thing we want to hear most is her accent, so they held it back.

Tilda Swinton plays a woman who begins experiencing a mysterious sensory syndrome while traversing the jungles of Colombia in the trailer for Memoria.

-Here’s the first trailer for Jane Campion‘s The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. It hits Netflix December 1 after making the festival rounds.

Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple: Ted Lasso’s Unlikely BFFs

Ted-Lasso-Hannah-Waddingham-and-Juno-Temple

-I love this profile on Ted Lasso costars and friends Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple. They talk masculinity, sports, and how Waddingham considers Temple a “fairy godmother unicorn” to her daughter.

-Meanwhile, one thing that came up repeatedly in Jason Sudeikis’ GQ profile is how much like Ted Lasso his friends think he is. Here’s more proof: a journalist shared an email that Sudeikis had written him after their interview three years ago, in which the reporter mentioned that he’d recently lost his dad. It is the most heartwarming, positive, Lasso-esque thing ever. “It’s important and fucking necessary for us human beings to do that. To connect. To share. And to not concern ourselves too much with the outcome of such bravery. Especially the men of the world. Our generation is the first to “understand” that notion, but darn it, I’d love to try and be the first generation of fellas to “live” the notion as well.”

-This is a great deep dive into the inexplicable allure of Pete Davidson.

-In court yesterday, Britney Spears said she wants to charge her father with conservatorship abuse. “I want to press charges against my father today. I want an investigation into my dad….I was always extremely scared of my dad.” She also said her hair vitamins and coffee have been confiscated (“Ma’am, that’s not abuse, that’s just f*cking cruelty. Excuse my language, but it’s the truth”). She gave a shout out to the #FreeBritney movement and used the hashtag for the first time.

Ashton Kutcher said Mila Kunis convinced him to give up his Virgin Galactic ticket. “My wife basically encouraged that it was not a smart family decision to be heading into space when we have young children.”

-I’ve always liked Chrissy Teigen but her latest post is nuts. We’re all emotionally battered from the pandemic, Cubans are starving, Nasa is warning that the moon is wobbling, and she’s over here making posts complaining about being “cancelled”??!? First, if your platform includes 34M Insta followers and 13M Twitter followers, you are anything but cancelled. Second, I will never understand celebrities who don’t seem to have friends they can complain about this shit with in a group chat, rather than airing it all in public.

-The reviews for Apple’s Schmigadoon are decidedly mixed, but I’m still looking forward to it.

-YouTuber and TikToker Hunter “Echo” Ecimovic did an Instagram livestream on Tuesday, saying that he “groomed” Mille Bobbie Brown. She’s having none of it.

-Netflix might be getting into the video games business.

-I love that Kat Graham is in Cannes. She was the best thing about The Vampire Diaries and I only want good things for her.

-Love Actually and Sanditon actor Kris Marshall apologized for his ‘offensive and insensitive’ comments after Death in Paradise exit. He said that he felt his son was becoming “a bit too Caribbean” after spending three years on the island of Guadeloupe.

-I know people really liked the Loki finale, but that was extremely unsatisfying to me. It felt more like a big setup for the future of the MCU, rather than the conclusion of the story they were trying to tell. A show that has — up until this point — been so centered on Loki had a finale that just….wasn’t. (The guest star killed it though.)

-Here’s the first trailer for Taika Waititi‘s new Hulu show Reservation Dogs.

Steven Yeun Covers GQ

GQ/DIANA MARKOSIAN

-Minari star Steven Yeun gets the GQ cover star treatment, which feels long overdue. The interview is great but I don’t know why they used that photo for the cover when this shot was right there!

-We knew Oprah‘s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was going to be good based on the promos, but this was a rare instance where the promotional material actually undersold the finished product, which went broader and deeper than anybody expected. Here are the 10 biggest revelations.

-I liked Lainey’s piece on how strategic it was to have Harry be the one to dunk on his family.

-Honestly, I’m most happy that they revealed they had a secret ceremony before the big wedding, which is a plot twist straight out of the Fug Girls’ novel – which is loosely based on them.

-CBS This Morning released more clips from the interview. Highlights include Meghan talking about her father’s betrayal, Harry calling the UK press racist, and how the Queen was pressured to rescind her invite to the couple to visit her. Meghan also said she hadn’t seen her half-sister in nearly a decade, but she “changed her last name back to Markle only when I started dating Harry. So I think that says enough.” But the biggest post-interview revelation was Harry’s clarification that the skin colour conversation did not happen with Queen or Prince Phillip (leading to lots of speculation it was Charles).

-The ratings were huge – 17.1 million people watched it. I’m guessing a lot of west coast people tuned in after seeing us east coasters lose our minds on Twitter.

-Proportionally, the ratings were even stronger in Canada.

-Oh, there was also an award show last night! The Critic’s Choice Awards, which led to some excellent moments, including the kid from Minari suddenly sobbing during his acceptance speech, Jason Sudeikis thanking his ex Olivia Wilde, and this perfect picture from when Ted Lasso won.

-Kim’s Convenience, which found a global audience on Netflix, will be concluding its run with its current fifth season.

Camila Mendes said she started having panic attacks while filming Riverdale amid covid. “When we first started shooting season 5, I started having panic attacks, which was strange for me. I think it was because I was in Vancouver and borders were closed—no one could visit us. You start to miss your home and your life, and you don’t have your friends or community with you.”

Charisma Carpenter wrote a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter on how to be an ally for victims of abuse.

-I mostly liked the WandaVision finale (coulda done without the action scenes but Marvel is gonna Marvel), but I especially liked that the show stuck to its guns about what it’s really about.

-I also very much agree with this thread about how mystery box shows have ruined audiences’ abilities to understand what the narrative is trying to tell us.

-The fact that the big cameo Paul Bettany was teasing was actually himself is the best trolling ever.

-A guy from Mumford & Sons is in hot water for praising a controversial right-wing author.

-There is a lot of conversations happening about colourism and Lovecraft County. The show has apologized after an extra claimed that the show’s makeup artists darkened her skin for an appearance on the series.

-Netflix released a promo for the next batch of Lupin episodes.

Colin Farrell and Tye Sheridan star in the Voyagers trailer.
