Tessa Thompson Wants To Change Hollywood

–Tessa Thompson covers the new issue of Time, in which she talks about how the industry is slow to change (“Every big opportunity I have been provided has always been with people of color. There is a long list of white, male filmmakers I would love to work with but they just don’t see me. They just don’t”) and refusing to answer to nicknames on the Men In Black set (“If Chris [Hemsworth] is ‘sweetie,’ I can be ‘sweetie,’ too. But if he’s Chris, I’m Tessa”).

-This is boss: Michelle Rodriguez has confirmed that she will reprise her role for Fast & Furious 9 — but only after securing an agreement for a female writer to join the production.

–Meghan Markle‘s friends are coming to her defense in a new TV special called Meghan and Harry Plus One, hosted by Gayle King.

–Maya Rudolph is such a good friend, she was willing to stick her hand down an airplane toilet for Amy Poehler.

-God, I love that Tiffany Haddish keeps wearing that dress.

-The latest episode of Law & Order: SVU is getting heavy criticism for reportedly enflaming Islamophobia. The showrunner’s responses to people on Twitter about it are certainly not helping.

–Bill Murray talking about Selena Gomez is all kinds of sweet: “I really like her. I mean, you still can’t tell me who the hell ‘Selena Gomez’ is — but Gomez… I really like. She’s unusually bright. She’s kind and she’s natural. I’m always pleased to find some kind of pop icon who I really like.”

-Greys Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo tore into The Bachelor boss over his tweets to Kelly Ripa: “we don’t attack successful women on our network.” I think I love her. When she’s done playing Meredith, she should write a book on how to be an ally because she’s been crushing it.

-An Amell is starring in the adaptation of The Hating Game!?! It’s the combination of my two favourite things!!! (I literally just fangirled over that author at a reading last month.) Lucy Hale is playing the female lead, which is a pretty good fit for the role physically.

–Lucy is having a big day. The trailer for her Riverdale spinoff also came out. Other new CW trailers include Nancy Drew and Batwoman.

-I don’t love the silly petition by Game of Thrones fans (we can bitch and moan about TV shows but the only thing we’re entitled to control is our remotes; if you hate it, just turn it off and write fanfic), but I do love the totally ludicrous and not gonna happen “Jamie is still alive” theory.

-Meanwhile, Gwendoline Christie told EW she was not happy when she found out that Jamie was leaving Brienne for Cersei. “That’s where I went very red. I was very upset and I had to go for a walk.”

-I also totally missed the point of Varys’ rings last episode, but this makes sense.

–David Letterman sent a surprise message of support to Busy Phillips and her showrunner (who started as his assistant).

-If someone asked me to guess who in Hollywood was bringing back the Saw franchise, Chris Rock wouldn’t have been at the top of my list.

-God bless Chloe Sevigny – aka the only person in the world who can wear this outfit and not incite ridicule.

Tiffany Haddish Talks Pay Parity

-For the 2018 Power of Women issue, Variety profiled five women—Emma Gonzalez, Lena Waithe, Tiffany Haddish, Natalie Portman, and Regina King—about how they’re using their power for good.

-This entire Tiffany Haddish interview is excellent but I really like her take on why women should speak to each other more openly about salaries and perks. “I think the reason why, a lot times, we don’t get paid the same as men do is because we don’t talk about it. I think we do need to talk about it because I sure get in there and I’m like, ‘Hey, Kate Hudson. How much do they pay you for that? What kind of perks do you get for that?’ I didn’t know they could fill your room up with whatever kind of food you want. That’s why I done gained so much weight, because she told me about all the food you can get. I’m like, you can bring me some tacos and I want an In-N-Out burger.”

-This weekend, Taylor Swift broke her usual stance about not mentioning politics and endorsed two Democratic candidates in Tennessee — and it looks like it may have made a huge impact. Following her Instagram post, Vote.org experienced their second biggest traffic spike, and in the first 48 hours since her post, the site had 240,ooo new voter registrants. Tennessee has seen 5,183 registrations this month so far, half of which came after her post. To put that into perspective, Tennessee saw only 2,811 registrations in the entire month of September.

-Congrats to Suits star Patrick Adams and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario, who welcomed a baby girl.

–Dakota Johnson is fighting a lot of rumours this week. She and Chris Martin hosted a party that happened to have some pink and blue balloons, and everyone assumed (incorrectly) that it was a gender reveal party. She’s also fighting rumours that she’s in a secret affair with Jamie Dornan. (Anyone with eyeballs just has to watch an interview with those two to dispel that one…)

-Stranger Things David Harbour will officiate a wedding in full Hellboy costume for 666k re-tweets. (I kinda like this game where he does ridiculous things for retweets, though I’m getting a little nervous about how far he’s going to take it.)

-A passage that leaked from Busy Philipps’ forthcoming memoir details an alleged assault by James Franco on the set of Freaks and Geeks. The script called for her character to gently nudge him in the chest. Philipps writes that the scripted gesture caused Franco to get so upset, he allegedly “grabbed both my arms and screamed in my face, ‘DON’T EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!’ And he threw me to the ground. Flat on my back. Wind knocked out of me.” Her costar Linda Cardellini suggested that Philipps report what happened to her manager.

-The fact that Brie Larson is still in Jacob Trembley’s life makes me happy.

-Also making me happy: how much fun Jason Momoa and Mark Ruffalo appear to be having together.

-Ha ha ha. James Gunn may move to DC to write and direct the next Suicide Squad movie.

-Next year’s MET Gala will be co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and Harry Styles.

-I liked this piece questioning whether Lady Gaga‘s character “sells out” in A Star Is Born. I dug the movie, but it was very weird how it leaned so heavily into a 2004-ish debate about how rock auteurs are so much more authentic than pop stars. I’m kind of surprised Gaga didn’t push back on that.

-Reflecting on her 20s, Gwyneth Paltrow recalls being so naïve and arrogant, her own father once warned her, “You’re acting like a dick.”

–Rupert Everett might actually be my spirit animal. In a red carpet interview he said: “I’d like to be dead quite soon. I can’t really deal with the modern world, to be quite honest. I’m very anti-virtual. I do [have an email address] unfortunately. I’m always thinking of stopping it.”

-Apparently there’s always been a lot of sexy subtext in the Venom comics, but the fact that critics are calling the film a “rom-com” and the internet is now shipping Tom Hardy‘s character with the parasite who lives within him actually makes me want to see this thing!

–Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy explained UK slang for us.

–Helena Bonham Carter talked about working with Harvey Weinstein: “He knew how to get you Oscar nominations. Both my [Oscar] nominations are due to him… [But] I found the way he treated certain people chilling—without any kind of respect. There were many times I disagreed with the way he behaved, and I don’t mean sexually.”

-The 11th season of Doctor Who, which stars Jodie Whittaker as the first woman to play the title role and got rave reviews, grew from last season’s premiere in ratings, while The Walking Dead suffered a new premiere ratings low. It’s like the universe is righting itself…

-Here’s our first look at Ruby Rose’s Batwoman look in the Arrowverse. It’s a great costume, which is atypical for the CW. But it’s a terrible wig, which is very typical for the CW.

-EgyptAir is shifting blame for that terrible Drew Barrymore interview to an ad agency. Sure.

–Kanye West is set to meet with Trump and Jared Kushner at the White House on Thursday to discuss prison reform and reducing the violence in Chicago. Oh, problems solved then!

-Aw man, I clearly have to renew my Amazon Prime membership, because the trailer for Good Omens starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant looks great.

-Here’s the Billy on the Street segment with Emma Stone, in which he tries to convince her to join Instagram. The girl around the 3:30 min marks slays me (“Even Will Smith is on it!”)

–David Marchese interviews are always a delight, but his latest with Emma Thompson takes it to a whole new level of awesomeness. She talks about the #MeToo movement, her evolving feminism, and drops bon mots such as: “Although we mustn’t get gloomy. Lots of things are better today: dentistry.”

-Her interview-turned-dance with Stephen Colbert was also magic.

-The White Boy Rick promo tour has given Matthew McConaughey multiple opportunities to repeat his non-so-great beliefs about the “problem” with single-parent families.

-Goddamit. Aaron Paul deserves a better a show than Westworld.

-Manager Scooter Braun says he used to worry every night that Justin Bieber was going to die of an overdose. “There was a time when I would go to sleep almost every night when he had the money to fly away from me and I was worried every night that I was gonna lose him. That was the time when I was telling him he’s not allowed to work. He used to yell and scream at me and he wanted to put music out. He wanted to tour, but I thought if he did that, he would die.”

-Oof — emails released in a lawsuit show that Warren Beatty dismissed test audiences’ initial reactions to his movie Rules Don’t Apply because they were “too ethnic.”

–Norm Macdonald apologized for his “Down Syndrome” remark, tried to clarify his Roseanne/Louis C.K. comments, and added “If 500 women go against a man, obviously the guy is guilty. But with Chris Hardwick, it was one woman against one man. So, I was saying that it was good … that Chris Hardwick has been rehabilitated as he’s going to get.” Yeah, he should probably just stop now.

-Oh good, he just might.  He gave the New Yorker what he’s said may be his last-ever print interview.

-According the NYT’s new story on Les Moonves, the board only began to turn on him when they discovered, after months of assuring them the accusations were false or “grossly overstated,” that he was trying to find one of his accusers a job at CBS in exchange for her silence.

-BoJack Horseman’s Raphael Bob-Waksberg apologized for the “original sin” of casting his show with only white people.

-The Predator director Shane Black gave an emotional apology on the red carpet, telling the AP “I take full responsibility. I’m very deeply sorry…I hope I learn from this.” I hope he reached out to Olivia Munn.

-Speaking of Munn, The Predator sex offender’s victim has broken her silence to thank the actress for taking a stand on her behalf: “I was not able to speak for myself when I was 14…I am also eternally grateful for Olivia Munn’s action. She spoke up for me. She took a stance for me. In turn she stood for all who have suffered like I have. To be acknowledged by a stranger, on a public platform about this issue is incredibly empowering.”

-The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil took down a gym bodyshamer.

–Lindsay Morgan from The 100 and Emily Bett Rickards from Arrow keep posting videos of them working out together and it makes my gym sessions look like naptime.

–Judy Greer cried while talking about BFF Jennifer Garner on yesterday’s episode of The Social.

-In court documents, a jewelry designer has accused Sarah Jessica Parker of borrowing about $70,000 worth of jewelry, which she never returned. SJP’s lawyer is denying the allegations.

–Missy Elliott surprised viral video star Mary Halsey on Ellen today. I love that they kept cutting to Kristen Bell during her performance.

-The first trailer for Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is legitimately creepy.

-Here’s the first full promo for Julia Roberts‘ new Amazon show Homecoming, which looks creepy af. It screened at TIFF this week and people dug it.
