Matthew McConaughey Rails Against “Hollywood Elites”

-Ruh roh. In a recent episode of the podcast Under the Skin with Russell Brand, Matthew McConaughey criticized the “far left” and urged Democrats to be nicer to Trump supporters. People far smarter than I have explained what a privileged stance that is.

-I adored this piece on Mariah Carey‘s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, especially when it gets into her songwriting craft.

-According to Aubrey Plaza, Kristen Stewart got coronavirus while filming The Happiest Season. “COVID was on our set. Nobody really understood how serious it was. But I think a bunch of people on our set got sick.”

As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.

-Legendary Entertainment is reportedly set to challenge Warner Bros. over the latter’s decision to send Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong to HBO Max on the same day they are set for theatrical releases. Legendary only had 30 minutes notice before WarnerMedia’s 2021 HBO Max plan was announced.

Steven Soderbergh is hopeful about the future of theatrical releases:  “Let’s be clear: there is no bonanza in the entertainment industry that is the equivalent of a movie that grosses a billion dollars or more theatrically. That is the holy grail. So the theatrical business is not going away.”

-One the flip side, here’s a look at what former and current WarnerMedia execs think about what’s been going on there over the past couple years.

-It’s hard to tell how good a superhero movie is going to be from early reactions because they’re always hype, but initial buzz on Wonder Woman 1984 is strong.

-The trailer for A Recipe For Seduction, a co-branded production between KFC and Lifetime, dropped today and the internet went crazy. This is product placement on steroids. I honestly don’t think anyone had “chicken sex thriller” on their 2020 bingo card.

Mariah Carey Is Making Spirits Bright

-Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey graces the December  digital issue of Elle. In the interview, she talks about why the season is so special to her: “After I kind of emerged from my first relationship-slash-marriage [to Tommy Mottola] I created the Christmases that I wanted to have. A lot of very bad stuff happened to me when I was 12. But also, there is the spirit of that kid, that fighter who doesn’t give up, who does embrace who she is, even though the world didn’t understand that from my point of view.”

-I saw Our Friend at last year’s TIFF and Jason Segel and Dakota Johnson were so good, I completely forgot about the Casey Affleck of it all.

Introducing Elliot Page

-The Canadian star of Juno and Umbrella Academy announced today that he is transgender in a heartfelt Twitter post — and also took a shot at haters like (presumably?) J.K. Rowling: “To the political leaders who work to criminalize trans health care and deny our right to exist and to all those with a massive platform who continue to spew hostility towards the trans community: you have blood on your hands. You unleash a fury of vile and demeaning rage that lands on the shoulders of the trans community, a community in which 40% of trans adults report attempting suicide. Enough is enough. You aren’t being “cancelled,” you are hurting people.”

-I love that everyone who watched Happiest Season is all “justice for Abby! Screw Harper!” They’re not wrong.

Hugh Grant says he got The Undoing ending he wanted. Well, that makes one of us.
