Phoebe Waller-Bridge Talks Taking Over Hollywood

phoebe_waller-bridge_thr

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is on the cover of THR, talking about her secret new movie (“The day I wrapped ‘Fleabag,’ I went to bed thinking, ‘I’m never going to have another idea again. Oh shit.’ I woke up with the vision of this film”), and being hired to punch up the script for the upcoming Bond film (“A lot has been made of me coming on board because I’m a woman, and that’s wonderful. But also I can’t take credit for the movie that was written. It’s [director] Cary [Joji Fukunaga]’s movie”). Also, I had no idea she’s dating Three Billboards filmmaker Martin McDonagh.

-People mag is quoting a source close to Miley Cyrus who says that there’s a possibility that she might reunite with Liam Hemsworth. “They both agreed it’s better to spend time apart, but this doesn’t mean their relationship is completely over.”

-Here’s photos of Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost kissing during a beachside stroll in the Hamptons, just in case you were worried that they weren’t living their most smug best lives.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk were also spotted on a Hamptons stroll. Is there nothing else to do there?

-Here’s Oprah and Gayle King being quizzed on the meaning of internet slang like “snack” and “thicc.” The fact that Oprah immediately tries to use each word in a sentence as soon as she learns what it mean is precious.

A$AP Rocky has been found guilty in Sweden but will serve no more jail time.

-So I guess those blind items about a starlet who made a deal with Pornhub were about Bella Thorne.

This thread about this season of The Handmaid’s Tale pretty much sums up my feelings on it. I gave up halfway through but tuned back in for the finale and though I thought the last episode was effective, it didn’t make up for the meandering season.

-This is Netflix’s next cheesy romcom with possibly the worst title I’ve ever seen and I’m super here for it.

-There was an OC cast reunion at the airport this week.

-This deep dive into Jeremy Renner’s ridiculous Jeep commercials is just what I needed this week.

-We’re getting more info behind Universal’s decision to scrap The Hunt. Apparently execs and the filmmakers received death threats, and the studio’s internal security got involved. It was still a bad call, IMO.

-Forget those rumours that Anna Wintour is leaving Vogue. Not only is she staying, she’s getting a promotion. Anyone else getting some ‘third act of Devil Wears Prada’ maneuvering vibes?

-This clip of Kate McKinnon, who plays Ruth Bader Ginsburg on SNL, meeting her last night is cute.

-Marc Cherry’s soapy new CBS drama Why Women Kill, starring Lucy Liu and Ginnifer Goodwin, is getting good reviews.

-This is an interesting look on how Netflix will have to change its strategy soon. Between them refusing to give critics screeners for Mindhunter’s new season, and cancelling Tuca and Bertie (which a lot of people didn’t even know existed, even though it starred Tiffany Haddish and was from the Bojack creators), something’s gotta give. I’ve noticed they’ve started a weekly “what’s new this week” show on social media so things don’t get lost in the shuffle, but the fact that I recently watched the last season of Bojack and the algorithm didn’t even prompt me to watch Tuca and Bertie is a problem.

-2 Dope Queens star Phoebe Robinson just landed her own Comedy Central interview show. I recently went to a screening of Magic Mike XXL that she moderated, and she deserves all the good things.

-Here’s the trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s Palme d’Or winning film, Parasite. I really hope this comes to TIFF. All I’ve heard about it is that you should go in knowing as little as possible because the end will blow your mind.

-Here’s the Last Christmas trailer, directed by Paul Feig and starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. Look, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this film since they first announced it, but this trailer has me (and pretty much the entire romance-reading population) thinking he’s going to end up being a ghost or an angel, and I’m not here for that.

Anne Hathaway Expecting Baby #2

Anne-Hathaway-Pregnant

-Congrats to Anne Hathaway, who revealed she’s pregnant! In her IG caption, she hints at trouble conceiving, saying “For everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”

-This blooper reel from Avengers: Endgame is super short but still fun.

-The TCAs kicked off today (I always feel so bad for all the entertainment reporters who have to go straight from Comic-Con to this) and on HBO’s panel, they disputed the reports of drama behind the scenes on Big Little Lies, saying “As anyone who works in TV knows, the director doesn’t have final creative control. That creative control was taken from a director is a false premise.” But even if Andrea Arnold wasn’t promised full creative control, they certainly sold this season as being driven by her vision. So even if the plan was always to have Jean-Marc Vallée come in and un-do her work (which seems wildly inefficient), it’s still a bad look for a show that promotes itself as female-centric.

-Also, I really want bts footage of Meryl Streep pushing back on acting notes.

Louis Tomlinson is refuting an article claiming One Direction split due to Larry Stylinson’ fan fiction, calling it the “biggest load of bulls–t I’ve seen in a while.”

-I’m always fascinated by the culture of TV writers rooms, so this article about the Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ writers byzantine process for choosing lunch is like catnip.

-I gotta stop reading postmortem interviews about Veronica Mars because it’s bumming me out even more. Showrunner Rob Thomas says that if the show continues, it’ll be as a crime-solving show (presumably outside of Neptune and without most of the supporting cast): “Kristen [Bell] and I really want to keep doing more of these [limited, self-contained seasons], like the Sherlock and even Fargo templates. Something where, when we both have windows of availability, we can come back and do it. The thinking is that we need to survive as a noir detective show. And if we kept doing a show that was half teenage soap and half mystery show, the fear is it would start feeling like nostalgia.” This feels like such a miscalculation; who watches VM for the mysteries over the relationships?

-I’m not sure what’s happening with the Canadian band Stars, but they seem to be having a rough day on Twitter.

Faye Dunaway was fired from the Broadway-bound play Tea at Five after she allegedly slapped and threw things at crew members.

Isaiah Washington is a Trump supporter? Why am I not surprised.

-I’m bummed that the reviews for Mindy Kaling‘s Four Weddings and a Funeral adaptation for Hulu aren’t more glowing. (It’s also weird that the show is somehow less queer than the 1994 movie.)

-A lot of the reviews for Orange Is The New Black indicate the series ends its run with a really strong final season.

-Speaking of reviews, the more I read about Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the less I want to see it.

Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste are starring in a show called Why Women Kill from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry — and the trailer hooked me.

Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn‘s friendship being the basis of a Lifetime movie makes so much sense, it’s weird it hasn’t been done before.

Channing Tatum Loses at Jenga — And We All Win!

-If this is the result of Channing Tatum losing a game of Jenga, he should always always be playing Jenga.

Anjelica Huston gave a free-wheeling interview to Vulture and although her views on #MeToo and her defense of Jeffrey Tambor and Woody Allen aren’t great, most of her other answers are amazingly candid.  She claims that after she beat Oprah Winfrey at the Oscars, the TV icon wouldn’t speak to her when they crossed paths, and talked about the bad behavior of costars Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray (“He was a shit to me on Life Aquatic”), and ex-boyfriends Jack Nicholson and Ryan O’Neal (“He head-butted me. He took my head in his hands and hit it with full force against his head because he couldn’t find me at a party”).

-Wow, how cute is Princess Charlotte in these newly released portraits from the palace?

-This is a fascinating look at who got higher billing on Avengers: Endgame.

-Now that Endgame has been in theatres for a bit, the stars are starting to share more bts stuff. Robert Downey Jr. posted pics from a lunch he hosted for the ladies of MCU, while Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Olsen shared videos from a crowded day on set.

-Meanwhile, this video of Anthony Mackie roasting Tom Holland during an interview is pure gold, as is this interview with Chris Hemsworth trying to remember all the MCU movies.

-After all the drama with 50 Cent (Fofty) have Lala and Randall Emmett split?

Emma Bunton insists there’s no drama between her and Mel B after that fling reveal: “We’re in the studio and we’re laughing, we love the drama.”

Lucy Liu got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, and her Charlie’s Angels costar Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz showed up to support her.

-Wait, we have been mispronouncing Lloyd Dobler’s name all this time?!

-HBO has released the trailer for season two of Succession. That show took quite a few episodes for me to get into it, but now I’m all in.

-Every new trailer for Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson‘s Late Night makes me more and more excited for this movie.

-Hulu threw a star-studded presentation in NYC this morning, where they debuted new trailers for George Clooney’s Catch 22, the latest season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and the one I’m most excited about: the Veronica Mars revival.  Damn, this trailer looks good!
