When Mariah Met Mellie

–Millie Bobby Brown got to meet Mariah Carey. (Seriously though, every picture of MBB lately makes me double take. She looks so different and I can’t figure out what it is.)

-This might be the most cringe-worthy segment the Ellen Show has ever aired: Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and Ellen Degeneres debated which celeb male Charlize Theron should date, all while Charlize looked like she wanted to murder everyone in the room who was allowing this to happen. AND THEN they showed a photo of Kidman’s ex Lenny Kravitz and suddenly everyone had murder eyes.

-The Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun feud kicked into high gear last night, went Swift took to social media to accuse Braun and her former label of blocking her from playing her old songs at next weekend’s American Music Awards. Her not having control over the songs that she wrote? Not cool. Her siccing her legion of fans on anyone who disagrees with her? Also not cool. This whole situation is a not cool fest…

-The Actors on Actors interviews continue to roll out. Today’s participants: Charlize Theron and Adam Driver, and Tom Hanks and Renée Zellweger.

-Survivor’s Elizabeth and Missy have apologized for their actions on this week’s episode: “Sexual harassment and sexual assault are extremely serious, life altering topics that I do not take lightly. They have no business being used as tactics to further one’s own agenda, whether it be in real life or in the game of Survivor.”

–Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson are quickly turning into my fave celeb couple.

-Quibi (the short form video platform) isn’t expected to launch until next year, but it continues to reel in stars. Bill Murray has signed on to star in a Peter Farrelly comedy series, Will Arnett is going to host a comedy series, the Russo Brothers are creating a Marvel vs DC docu-series, and there’s a Varsity Blues revival.

–Lauryn Hill just dropped her first new solo song in five years.

-This is a great look at how Kelly Clarkson pulls off all those covers on her talk show.

-Congrats to Lena Waithe, who revealed that she secretly married her fiancée, Alana Mayo, at a courthouse in San Francisco.

–GOOP’s holiday gift guide is fully of goopy ridiculousness.

–Mo’Nique is taking Netflix to court for pay discrimination.

-Actress-turned-influencer Eva Amurri, who is currently pregnant, announced her and her husband have split.

–This piece is the best thing I’ve read about The Morning Show so far — especially if you’re a Jennifer Aniston scholar.

-I’m just catching up on the controversy about The Social and I don’t really get the uproar? Yeah, Jess‘ comments about hockey players being bullies is subjective (though she did clearly say it was based on her experience), but everything else is pretty undeniable, no? Hockey is played by predominantly white dudes, and it’s really expensive to put your kids in it so it’s mostly dominated by families with a lot of disposable income and time.

-Holy crap, Sesame Street just did a Succession spoof starring Brian Cox and it’s everything I’ve ever wanted.

Tiffany Haddish Talks Pay Parity

-For the 2018 Power of Women issue, Variety profiled five women—Emma Gonzalez, Lena Waithe, Tiffany Haddish, Natalie Portman, and Regina King—about how they’re using their power for good.

-This entire Tiffany Haddish interview is excellent but I really like her take on why women should speak to each other more openly about salaries and perks. “I think the reason why, a lot times, we don’t get paid the same as men do is because we don’t talk about it. I think we do need to talk about it because I sure get in there and I’m like, ‘Hey, Kate Hudson. How much do they pay you for that? What kind of perks do you get for that?’ I didn’t know they could fill your room up with whatever kind of food you want. That’s why I done gained so much weight, because she told me about all the food you can get. I’m like, you can bring me some tacos and I want an In-N-Out burger.”

-This weekend, Taylor Swift broke her usual stance about not mentioning politics and endorsed two Democratic candidates in Tennessee — and it looks like it may have made a huge impact. Following her Instagram post, Vote.org experienced their second biggest traffic spike, and in the first 48 hours since her post, the site had 240,ooo new voter registrants. Tennessee has seen 5,183 registrations this month so far, half of which came after her post. To put that into perspective, Tennessee saw only 2,811 registrations in the entire month of September.

-Congrats to Suits star Patrick Adams and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario, who welcomed a baby girl.

–Dakota Johnson is fighting a lot of rumours this week. She and Chris Martin hosted a party that happened to have some pink and blue balloons, and everyone assumed (incorrectly) that it was a gender reveal party. She’s also fighting rumours that she’s in a secret affair with Jamie Dornan. (Anyone with eyeballs just has to watch an interview with those two to dispel that one…)

-Stranger Things David Harbour will officiate a wedding in full Hellboy costume for 666k re-tweets. (I kinda like this game where he does ridiculous things for retweets, though I’m getting a little nervous about how far he’s going to take it.)

-A passage that leaked from Busy Philipps’ forthcoming memoir details an alleged assault by James Franco on the set of Freaks and Geeks. The script called for her character to gently nudge him in the chest. Philipps writes that the scripted gesture caused Franco to get so upset, he allegedly “grabbed both my arms and screamed in my face, ‘DON’T EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!’ And he threw me to the ground. Flat on my back. Wind knocked out of me.” Her costar Linda Cardellini suggested that Philipps report what happened to her manager.

-The fact that Brie Larson is still in Jacob Trembley’s life makes me happy.

-Also making me happy: how much fun Jason Momoa and Mark Ruffalo appear to be having together.

-Ha ha ha. James Gunn may move to DC to write and direct the next Suicide Squad movie.

-Next year’s MET Gala will be co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and Harry Styles.

-I liked this piece questioning whether Lady Gaga‘s character “sells out” in A Star Is Born. I dug the movie, but it was very weird how it leaned so heavily into a 2004-ish debate about how rock auteurs are so much more authentic than pop stars. I’m kind of surprised Gaga didn’t push back on that.

-Reflecting on her 20s, Gwyneth Paltrow recalls being so naïve and arrogant, her own father once warned her, “You’re acting like a dick.”

–Rupert Everett might actually be my spirit animal. In a red carpet interview he said: “I’d like to be dead quite soon. I can’t really deal with the modern world, to be quite honest. I’m very anti-virtual. I do [have an email address] unfortunately. I’m always thinking of stopping it.”

-Apparently there’s always been a lot of sexy subtext in the Venom comics, but the fact that critics are calling the film a “rom-com” and the internet is now shipping Tom Hardy‘s character with the parasite who lives within him actually makes me want to see this thing!

–Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy explained UK slang for us.

–Helena Bonham Carter talked about working with Harvey Weinstein: “He knew how to get you Oscar nominations. Both my [Oscar] nominations are due to him… [But] I found the way he treated certain people chilling—without any kind of respect. There were many times I disagreed with the way he behaved, and I don’t mean sexually.”

-The 11th season of Doctor Who, which stars Jodie Whittaker as the first woman to play the title role and got rave reviews, grew from last season’s premiere in ratings, while The Walking Dead suffered a new premiere ratings low. It’s like the universe is righting itself…

-Here’s our first look at Ruby Rose’s Batwoman look in the Arrowverse. It’s a great costume, which is atypical for the CW. But it’s a terrible wig, which is very typical for the CW.

-EgyptAir is shifting blame for that terrible Drew Barrymore interview to an ad agency. Sure.

–Kanye West is set to meet with Trump and Jared Kushner at the White House on Thursday to discuss prison reform and reducing the violence in Chicago. Oh, problems solved then!

-Aw man, I clearly have to renew my Amazon Prime membership, because the trailer for Good Omens starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant looks great.

–Sarah Jessica Parker, Renée Zellweger and Jacqueline Bisset star in the Here and Now trailer.

Frances McDormand Dances Into Our Hearts

-Vogue shot artsy videos of the stars dancing around an exhibit room during the MET gala. The good ones are Rihanna, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Katy Perry.  The very best one is Frances McDormand dancing to Basement Jaxx. She really did look like she was having the night of her life. 

–Katy Perry flew Kim Kardashian’s press on nails to LA for the MET gala. That’s true friendship.

-At last night’s MET Gala, the theme was Catholicism and the outfits were nuts. I adored Lena Waithe in a giant rainbow cape, Zendaya‘s take on Joan of Arc, and Blake Lively‘s burgundy number. But no one made me happier than Chadwick Boseman with hair sparkles, and  Frances McDormand  in Valentino.

-I’m really bummed that Scarlett Johansson broke the A-lister embargo and wore Marchesa, despite the Weinstein connection. She says their dresses make women feel “confident.”

–Jay-Z, Eminem, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston and more are demanding money from the Weinstein Company.

-Congrats to Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst, who had a baby boy.

-I don’t even watch Lethal Weapon, but what’s going on with that show is crazy. Clayne Crawford has been fired as the lead of the Fox drama as producers are scrambling to recast the role, and renewal is supposed to hinge on who they cast. Multiple actors have already passed, according to THR.

-All of the original Avengers got matching tattoos, except for Mark Ruffalo, who opted out. (But Chris Evans has a plan to get him “blackout drunk.“)

-The R. Kelly house continues to crumble before our eyes. Two new accusers appeared on Megyn Kelly Today to detail sexual the harrasment they faced: “You weren’t free to walk throughout the house…We were required to call him Daddy.”

-This makes my heart sad: Colton Haynes has filed for divorce from Jeff Leatham after just six months of marriage. Rumours started circulating this weekend after he released a new song about a cheater, and a blind item began circulating. Haynes shut down speculation that Leatham cheated on Twitter, but did not deny the split. Poor guy; he just lost his mother, too.

–Kristen Stewart is looking at Cate Blanchett exactly how I would.

-Here are all the references in the new Childish Gambino music video you probably missed. (I know I did.)

-I can’t stop watching this video of Mariah Carey putting makeup on a stranger.

-Why the hell did The Hollywood Reporter gives Jeffrey Tambor and his sexual harassment allegations a sympathetic, soft-focus profile?  “I did raise my voice at times, I was moody at times, there were times when I was tactless…But as for the other stuff, absolutely not.”

-Meanwhile, the cast wants extra compensation for Netflix’s recut episodes.

-Cancel Bear (who is usually spot on about these things) posted his TV renewal predictions for networks. On Fox, he thinks Gotham and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are toast, Kevin will no longer be saving the world on ABC but Quantico should get a pass, on NBC all their new comedies and Timeless are likely done, while almost every show on CBS and CW are safe (minus CW’s Life Sentence and Valour, which were both just cut).

–Ta-Nehisi Coates on Kanye West is the one thing you need to read this week if you haven’t already.

-There have been some very, very good takes about what went down at FanCon. Today’s Vulture piece, which failed to interview the BGN writers who quit or the vendors affected, is not one of them.

-Ryan Reynolds using Canada to promote Deadpool 2 in Europe is a good time.
