Empire Star Jussie Smollett Victim of Suspected Hate Crime

-People are awful. Empire star Jussie Smollett was has been hospitalized after a horrific attack. He was walking down the street when two men reportedly approached him, started harassing him with homophobic slurs, put a rope around his neck, threw bleach on him and screamed “This is MAGA country.” The FBI has now taken over the case after it was confirmed the actor received an earlier threat.

-Hollywood is rallying around Smollett and calling for justice.

-Slope scares: Gwyneth Paltrow is being sued for allegedly causing injuries to a doctor after he said she crashed into him while skiing.

-Ellen staged a mini Friends reunion with Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox.

-In a new podcast, Thora Birch said she wants American Beauty fans to see past the “stain” of Kevin Spacey. “It shouldn’t be on the film. Who’s to blame? It’s Kevin. It doesn’t have anything to do with American Beauty.” K, but it’s still a terrible movie that has NOT aged well.

-This Bradley Cooper interaction with comedian Luenell at the SAGs made me like him a lot more than I did.

-Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan reveals she’s been secretly married to Jason Ralph for years. Is it a secret or did people just not care?

-Every time I see another clip from Bohemian Rhapsody, I get more angry. And I still haven’t watched it! I wanted to see all the nominated films before the Oscars but I don’t think I can do this one. I’ll end up setting the theatre on fire. Why are the SO. MANY. CUTS.

–Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid will be reportedly be subpoenaed over their Fyre Festival payments. I’m not surprised. Watching the documentaries, it was very strange how the “influencers” were just let off the hook.

–Richard E Grant fangirling over Babs a delight. I saw Can You Ever Forgive Me? last weekend and I would totally be ok with him winning the Supporting Actor Oscar.

-God, I’m so here for the Zombieland sequel.

–Tessa Thompson announced Time’s Up’s 4% challenge, which aims to boost the number of women directing top Hollywood films.

-That “leaked” list of supposed Grammy winners is fake. So you’ll have to tune in on Feb 10 and pretend that those awards are still relevant just like the rest of us.

–Lupita Nyong’o is serving up a fierce look on the cover of Vogue Spain.

-In other good covers, Ciara looks great on Cosmo.

–Taylor Swift/Karlie Kloss shippers must be devastated that Kloss got married (to a Kushner, no less!). Swift didn’t attend.

–Nicki Minaj appears on Future‘s new track, where she may or may not have thrown shade at Cardi B. Again.

-You know there’s too much TV when Toni Collette is starring in a new Netflix show that I’ve never even heard of.

–Kendall Jenner was granted a new restraining order against her stalker after he was re-arrested less than 48 hours after being released. She called out TMZ (quite rightly) for putting her in danger by releasing where she lives.

–Chris Pine explaining to Sally Fields that everyone is talking about his dick in his new film is good content.

–Javier Bardem continues to defend Woody Allen, calling his treatment a “public lynching” — which lines right up with what I thought of Bardem the one and only time I met him.

–Julia Louis-Dreyfus opened up about her breast cancer battle on Kimmel. (“I know we have to get this cancer s**t out of the way, so bring on the questions!”)

-The Good Place reached yet another level of awesomeness last night. Damn, I love that show. (Also, that was writer — and Emmy nominee!– Megan Amram as the violin player.)

–Rami Malek says he once got into a car accident after being distracted by his own face on a billboard. Totally understandable.

-I really want this little kid to join the Foo Fighters on the regular.

–Don Cheadle, Regina Hall, and Andrew Rannells star in the new trailer for Black Monday, the new Showtime show exec-produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Jimmy Fallon Tries to Redeem Himself, Fails Miserably

-NYT did a profile on Jimmy Fallon and he came off … not great. I don’t remember another attempt at damage control that made things this much worse. I gave up after the part where he talked about people being upset by his Trump interview and how “it hurt my feelings that they didn’t like it.”

-Twitter did not take kindly to the Fallon profile, either. (It also reminded me of that passage in BossyPants where Amy Poehler destroyed him.)

-Tragic: Rosario Dawson found her cousin dead in the actress’ Los Angeles home last week. No cause of death has been released.

–Taylor Swift is reportedly dating a British actor named Joe Alwyn. She’s been laying low for the past few months — I wonder if she’ll keep it on the DL or make it Instagram official?

–Katharine McPhee is denying rumours that she’s dating 67-year-old David Foster. Wait, what??

-This video of Kendall Jenner falling off a bike has 4 million views.  Well done, Internet!

–Will Smith clashed with Pedro Almodóvar over the Netflix controversy at Cannes, and I’m on Will’s side on this one. Streaming services like Netflix make diverse, worldly content easily accessible to everyone no matter where they live.

–Johnny Depp is dating again. Who? Why? How?

–James Corden is returning to host the Grammys in 2018. So basically it’s be another year of late night white dudes hosting all the award shows? Great.

-Pitch’s EP says he would like to shoot a goodbye episode. How about a goodbye three seasons?

-It was CBS’s turn at the upfronts today, where they got pissy that This Is Us has been crowned the biggest new show (it wins in the demo, but Bull actually has more total viewers), and defended the fact that all of their new fall shows have male leads. When pushed by reporters, Les Moonves said “I think we’re fine in terms of the amount of women who are behind the camera and in front of the camera.” See everyone? They’re FINE!

-CBS also announced that Star Trek Discovery takes place “10 years before Kirk, Spock, the Enterprise” and released a new photo and trailer.

-Warner Brothers insists the Justice League movie is totally fine so just ignore all those rumours that say otherwise, guys.

-In other DCU news, Sam Raimi reportedly passed on directing The Flash movie, which Billy Crudup just exited.

-Eff ya! Jordan Peele‘s next project is a Jim Crow-era HBO horror series.

–Jeff Goldblum nearly became the voice of Apple’s Siri? Now that’s all I want.

-The article about The Handmaid’s Tale and how women (white women in particular) are complicit in systems of oppression is well worth a read.

-Hamilton star Daveed Diggs just got cast as the lead in a Snowpiercer TV show and I am here for it.

–Stephen Amell is going to be on the Red Nose Day edition of American Ninja Warrior next week, and this preview shows him nailing the course. All that salmon laddering came in handy.

–Solange Knowles penned an emotional letter addressed to her teenage self about losing her friend in a drive-by shooting and becoming a mother at 17.

–Jimmy Kimmel and Justin Theroux are bringing back your favorite 70s, ’80s, and ’90s sitcoms.
