-The Canadian star of Juno and Umbrella Academy announced today that he is transgender in a heartfelt Twitter post — and also took a shot at haters like (presumably?) J.K. Rowling: “To the political leaders who work to criminalize trans health care and deny our right to exist and to all those with a massive platform who continue to spew hostility towards the trans community: you have blood on your hands. You unleash a fury of vile and demeaning rage that lands on the shoulders of the trans community, a community in which 40% of trans adults report attempting suicide. Enough is enough. You aren’t being “cancelled,” you are hurting people.”

-Celebs were quick to show their support, which is lovely. (I never read the comments, but I made an exception on his post because they were generally incredibly positive.) It’s also been really interesting to see which outlets managed to cover this without deadnaming him.

-Has Rihanna found love with A$AP Rocky? They were spotted together in NYC amid multiple reports that the pair might be dating.

-This annual Billie Eilish interview with Vanity Fair is always a fun watch, but this year’s is especially good as she reflects on how all of her predictions from last year blew up.

–Mariah Carey just called two of my favourite novels of the year (The Vanishing Half, and Such a Fun Age) her “essential 2020 reads” and I’m both confused and elated?

-Congrats to Mean Girls’ star Jonathan Bennett, who is engaged to Jaymes Vaughan.

–David Ramsey (who played Diggle) is returning to the Arrowverse. He’s set to direct five episodes and appear on camera in five more across the network’s superhero shows. But when he shows up on Legends, he won’t be playing Diggle. Maybe as the Green Lantern that was teased in the Arrow finale?

-I love that everyone who watched Happiest Season is all “justice for Abby! Screw Harper!” They’re not wrong.

–Hugh Grant says he got The Undoing ending he wanted. Well, that makes one of us.

-Meanwhile, this article claims that Nicole Kidman didn’t wear a wig in The Undoing. Which can’t be right. It’s like, physically impossible.

The mayor of LA changed course after anger erupted over a plan to shut down a covid-19 testing site at Los Angeles’ Union Station to film a She’s All That remake.

–David Boreanaz is getting in on the debate Stacy Abrams kicked off, saying Buffy belongs with his character Angel. I agreed for the first few seasons, but then I jumped to the Angel/Cordelia ship.

-This rundown of the best movies of 2020 made me realize how few movies I’ve seen this year. And then I got sad.

–Rita Ora has been fined $12k for throwing a large birthday party in London during lockdown.

–Benedict Cumberbatch, Jodie Foster and Shailene Woodley star in the The Mauritanian trailer about lawyers who defend a detainee at the U.S military’s Guantanamo Bay detention center.

 

Jason Momoa Gets Dirty

–Jason Momoa covers Men’s Health splattered in mud courtesy of the dune buggy-themed photo shoot. In the interview, he talks about filming Dune, being a good dad and a good husband, working through fear creatively, and gathering the nerve to ask out Lisa Bonet.

-Speaking of Health covers, Normani landed the Women’s Health one.

-Well, this is huge: Wonder Woman 1984 just became the biggest movie to drop on streaming, coming to HBO Max (and theatres where open) on Christmas Day. With all the vaccine news, I’m surprised Warner Bros didn’t just hold it until next summer/fall, but it looks like they’re willing to sacrifice the movie to beef up HBO Max subscribers. Bad news for theatres — and bad news for Canadians. It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting it on streaming by xmas, even though most (but not all) of HBO Max’s programming typically comes here via Crave. But Crave says it won’t stream the film until after its “standard theatrical windows,” which is traditionally 90 days.

-In other HBO Max news, they just greenlit a 4-episode adaptation of the comic series DMZ from Roberto Patino and Ava DuVernay, starring Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt.

-The Fresh Prince reunion just dropped on HBO Max, and everyone’s talking about the intense conversation between Will Smith and Janet Hubert (who played the first Aunt Viv). In this clip, she tells him “Calling a black woman difficult in Hollywood is the kiss of death and its hard enough being a dark-skinned black woman in this business.”

-A Back To The Future writer revealed that Biff Tannen was inspired by Trump. Yeah, that tracks.

-Meanwhile, Michael J. Fox recalled sitting next to Princess Diana at the Back to the Future premiere. “The movie started and I had to go pee. So, I am sitting there in agony. I can’t say anything to her, and I can’t turn my back on her. So the rest of the night was a nightmare, a pee-floating nightmare.”

–Hugh Grant considers Paddington 2 to be “kind of a masterpiece,” even if his kids think otherwise.

–Demi Lovato’s new look is making me want to chop all of my hair off. Wow!

-The paid Instagram posts from celebrities are out of control recently (I guess it’s the easiest way to make money while stuck at home in a pandemic) but this ad from Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shannen Doherty is very charming — mostly because it’s clear neither of them are great cooks. Did Shannen even bother to cut those potatoes?

-Speaking of paid partnerships, Jennifer Aniston just signed a big one with Vital Proteins. I love this for her. I used to take their collagen peptides for recovery back in the good ol’ days when it was safe to go to the gym.

-I’m thrilled that Kristen Stewart‘s gay holiday romcom is getting strong reviews. I mean, I was watching it regardless, but this is nice.

–Others have said it better than I ever could, but this article about the rise of “ambient TV” misses a whole lot of points. Also, Emily In Paris wasn’t even developed for Netflix originally.

-Here’s the first trailer for season 2 of Batwoman, with Javicia Leslie taking over the titular role.

-Here’s the trailer for Music, starring Kate Hudson and co-written and directed by Sia.

–Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley’s lost YA movie Chaos Walking finally gets a trailer. The production on this thing was cursed.

Nicole Kidman’s Mane Event

–Nicole Kidman covers the new issue of Marie Claire Australia and I am fascinated by her hair. This is also what I spend my entire time thinking about when watching The Undoing. The show is just ok but the hair is glorious. Is it a wig? Extensions? No way it’s this thick at 53, but however she’s doing it, it’s amazing.

-Kidman’s Undoing costar Hugh Grant told Stephen Colbert that he had covid in February. Of his symptoms he said “I kept breaking into a terrible sweat. It was like a poncho of sweat. Bit embarrassing, really. And then my eyeballs felt about three sizes too big, and a feeling as though an enormous man was sitting on my chest. A Harvey Weinstein or someone.”

–Britney Spears lost her court appeal to remove her father from overseeing her estate. Her lawyer said: “(Britney) has informed me that she is afraid of her father. She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”

-It looks like Brian Austin Green‘s camp is feeding quotes to Us Weekly about how Megan Fox is “unpredictable and inconsistent.” Ugh.

-Food Network host Alton Brown seems to be having a rough go of it lately. His pre-election rants seemed slightly unhinged, and now he’s had to apologize for a tweet he posted last night referencing the Holocaust.

-Meanwhile, Larry David‘s daughter says he comforted her following her brutal breakup with Pete Davidson by yelling “Cazzie, come on! YOUR ANCESTORS SURVIVED THE HOLOCAUST!”

-It seems kind of wild to me that details of the Hillsong pastor’s affairs are getting such media play, but that’s where we are in 2020.

–Khloe Kardashian said that the family’s annual Christmas Eve party is still scheduled to happen. Eek!

–Rupert Grint joined Instagram yesterday and his first pic was a a selfie with his 6-month-old baby girl. Harry Potter costar Tom Felton was quick to welcome him.

–Selena Gomez will star in a biopic about gay mountaineer and social entrepreneur Silvia Vásquez-Lavado.

-George Clooney has been selected to receive top honors during the Museum of Modern Art Film’s virtual benefit.

-The Gossip Girl reboot cast was photographed filming on the steps of the Met. Dammit, I think I want to watch this now.

-Woof. The Irish accents in the Wild Mountain Thyme trailer are something else.
