Adele Gets Ready for SNL

-Here’s our first look at Adele on SNL. I’m both looking forward to this episode and dreading the conversation about it.

–Jennifer Aniston posted a photo of her casting her election ballot early and she had a message for fans: “It’s not funny to vote for Kanye. I don’t know how else to say it. Please be responsible.”

-In a podcast interview, Jennifer Lawrence says it took her a while to get over falling at the Oscars. “I can look back at it now fondly but for a very long time the fall thing was very sensitive. Anderson Cooper, I saw him on CNN three days later saying, ‘Well she obviously faked the fall,’ and it was so devastating because it was this horrific humiliation to me. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a chance to give a speech like that again, so it didn’t feel good for me not to have a speech.”

-She also said her husband doesn’t mind that she kicks him to the guest room when she has “slumber parties, like, once a week” with her friends. In a pandemic tho?

-This year has been rough, but the ladies of pop are determined to get us through it by releasing new music. First came Taylor, then Demi, and now Ariana Grande.  With just 10 days to go before the U.S. election, she’s offering us a vision of what life would be like if she were in charge in her new video for “Positions”.

–Miley Cyrus is also getting in on the action, announcing a new album that’ll be released Nov 27.

–Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith continue to be the best celebrity couple.

–Matthew McConaughey talked to Howard Stern about how his mom repeatedly sold him out once he became famous. He’s incredibly forgiving.

-The funniest thing about Robert Downey Jr.‘s post supporting Chris Pratt is that he cropped Tom Holland out of the photo. They’re so close that they have … literally no photos together.

–Sacha Baron Cohen appeared on GMA, along with Borat 2 costar Maria Bakalova, and talked about the scene with Rudy Giuliani. “If the president’s lawyer found what he did there appropriate behavior then heaven knows what he’s doing with other female journalists in hotel rooms. I just urge everyone to watch the movie. It is what it is. He did what he did.” He added that he was “quite concerned” for Bakalova during the scene because he was hiding nearby and monitoring the situation via text. “It’s my responsibility as a producer as well to ensure that the lead actor is looked after.”

–Christine Baranski plays Scrooge to Dolly Parton‘s angel in the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming holiday musical Christmas on the Square.

-Speaking of Netflix holiday movies, the Dash & Lily trailer is super cute.

-So we’re still pretending that Paul Greengrass‘ News of the World, starring Tom Hanks, is coming out in theatres at Christmas, huh?

-Meanwhile, there’s lots of whispers about the studio behind James Bond shopping it to streaming sites and the numbers floating around are insane — like 200-600 million dollars insane.

–Kaley Cuoco may be a murderer in the trailer for The Flight Attendant, coming to HBO Max and Crave next month.

-God, I love Emmy roundtable season! In THR’s new issue, drama actresses Emilia Clarke, Danai Gurira, Michelle Williams, Patricia Arquette, Christine Baranski and Niecy Nash gather to talk about pay parity, the pressure to look a certain way, and standing up for their characters. (I particularly liked this bit from Gurira: “I remember having an argument with the director [on Walking Dead] because I was like, ‘I know you have [this love scene] written here like this, but this is what you’re getting.’And I wrote it on the script and I handed it to him.”)

–Nina Dobrev and screenwriter/director Grant Mello look blissed up in love in Cannes. I’m happy for her — she seemed to be going through it for a bit.

-A judge ordered Hayden Panettiere’s boyfriend Brian Hickerson to stay away from her after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge earlier this month.

-ABC’s live revival of classic Norman Lear sitcoms last night was weird and wonderful. I didn’t catch the whole thing but I did see Jennifer Hudson doing The Jefferson’s theme song, and Jamie Foxx‘s hilarious break in character.

–Gabrielle Union says she’s coaching hubby Dwayne Wade on basic life skills now that he’s retired from basketball. “He’s like, ‘What is this place? There’s all kind of like khaki shorts and cargo shorts and there’s all different colors.’ I’m like, ‘That’s Old Navy’…He has no idea how much milk costs. He’s like, ‘What is that, $20?’ and I’m like, ‘What kind of goat’s blood milk [are you drinking]?'”

-Warner’s upcoming streaming service just landed Anna Kendrick to star in a romcom series.  Great, yet another subscription!

–Lena Waithe did an amazing job last night guest-hosting for Kimmel, but everyone’s talking about the smooch Halle Berry laid on her which I found…weird. Isn’t it a little queerbaiting? Doesn’t Lena have a fiancée?

-Huh. ABC cancelled Whiskey Cavalier a couple of weeks ago, but fan outcry (and a bump in ratings) has them reconsidering the decision, with sources saying it’s now got a 50/50 shot at coming back.

-The Good Place creator Mike Schur hasn’t given any interviews about the most recent season — until now.

-I have been following this guy’s tweets for a month now and they are a consistent source of delight! His mom recently passed away and when he looked at her Kindle he was surprised to find it filled thousands of verryyyyy risque romance novels — which he is now reading and reviewing on Twitter.

-A bunch of media sites jumped the gun this morning and broke the embargo for the new Star Trek: Picard first teaser trailer, so CBS pulled it. But it’s back online now. Showing Picard (now an admiral after quitting Starfleet dues to events 15 years prior) at his winery.

-The first official trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate has arrived. Linda Hamilton is still fierce.

-Wow, Vogue Japan totally lucked out when they put Hailey Baldwin on their latest cover, having no idea she’d be Justin Bieber‘s fiancee by the time it hit newsstands.

–Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth took a wrecking ball to those split rumors with an IG story.

-Speaking of Hemsworths and social media, Chris Hemsworth secured his place as the second best Chris with this hilarious video for his wife’s birthday. I had serious concerns about her arm socket for a second or two there…

-Romance rumours surrounding Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller feel kind of inevitable at this point, no?

–Jenny McCarthy mistook her Google Home for a ghost. She’s swell.

-It feels like it’s been a minute since we’ve heard anything from Rihanna music-wise, but she’s looking to fix that. She’s reportedly working on two albums: a reggae one, and a pop one.

-My buddy Jon went to Chicago to interview Radiohead and its crew about Scott Johnson’s death, returning to Toronto and how the Canadian judicial system failed them.

-Crazy Rich Asians’ early word of mouth is GREAT.

-How the hell does a teen-targeting Netflix show that features a girl in a fat suit who only achieves agency once she gets her jaw wired shut and loses weight get made in 2018? How is that even possible? This entire fat-shaming premise is disgusting.

–This made me laugh and laugh.

-Director Gus Van Sant was originally tapped to direct Brokeback Mountain, and is spilling tea over which huge stars turned it down. “I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.”

-This investigation into the rumoured American Sailer Moon is weirdly fascinating.

–Christine Baranski says her high kicks have become something of a trademark. “It’s my one good dance move.”

–Amanda Seyfried did The Tonight Show’s Google Translate Songs: Mamma Mia edition, and things got really weird.

–Russell Simmons once told the staff at his yoga studio that he might become “collateral damage” of the #MeToo movement.

–Mark Duplass has walked back his dumbass tweet.

-This is a really fascinating read on celebrities and the opioid crisis. “The overall reaction to Prince and [Tom] Petty’s overdoses — and to the opioid-driven losses before them of such other popular performers as Philip Seymour Hoffman and Heath Ledger — has amounted to nothing much when it comes to awakening Americans to the scope of the national crisis.”

-A defamation lawsuit surrounding The Biggest Loser claims that former contestants are alleging the NBC show supplied them with drugs, including Adderall and the FDA-banned ephedra.

-I really liked this piece on why this year TV dramas have had so many disappointing second seasons (The Handmaid’s Tale, Luke Cage, Westworld, Legion, 13 Reasons Why, Jessica Jones), while comedies are finding their groove in the 2nd season (Atlanta, One Day at a Time, The Good Place, Glow). I think there’s something to be said for dramas getting fixated on plot twists (usually dark and grim ones at that), while comedies do better at focusing on characters you want to follow.

-Everyone and their dog is raving about the book My Year of Rest and Relaxation. I’m saving it for the long weekend!

-I’m not a comic book person, but is this really what the audience wants from Titans? A Dick Grayson who murders people and says “f**k Batman”? Because this looks cheap, terrible and certainly not worth signing up to a new subscription service for.

–Jodie Whittaker wakes up in the Doctor Who trailer they just showed at Comic-Con.

–Jennifer Lopez scams her way into a management job Working Girl-style in the Second Act trailer, which costars Leah Remini as her BFF and Milo Ventimiglia as her BF.
