Emmys Red Carpet: Best and Worst Dressed

 

Red and pink dresses, pale blue gowns and side boob were the biggest fashion trends at the 2019 Emmy Awards red carpet. Here are my picks for the best and worst dressed of the night:

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2019 EMMYS:

Zendaya SLAYED the red carpet. She was one of the last stars to arrive and girl shut it down with this Poison Ivy-inspired corseted Vera Wang. She could, as the kids say, step on my neck.

 

Russian Doll’s Natasha Lyonne was dripping in gold Gucci. Impeccable styling, impeccable posing, impeccable attitude.

 

I feel like I’ve seen a version of Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s Monique Lhuillier multiple times before but I don’t care. I still love her in it. If she isn’t going to wear the jumpsuit, this is a close second.

 

Regina King jumped on the baby blue bandwagon but added some extra flair with the straps on her Jason Wu dress.

 

GLOW star Betty Gilpin glowed in this sparkly Jason Wu dress paired with simple hair. I wish she’d had a bold lip but otherwise this is stellar.

 

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2019 EMMYS:

Look, I worship at the alter of Gwendoline Christie and I fully admit that she’s my personal Jesus. But that doesn’t mean I want her to dress like it.

 

The ladies of Game of Thrones should be taking a victory lap, as this is the last season the show is qualified for an Emmy. But they were uniformly underwhelming, especially Sophie Turner. She blended into her pale in Louis Vuitton — a dress that somehow managed to look both wrinkled and stiff.

 

There was a lot of weird bows or folds over boobs on this red carpet. There was also a lot of pale blue. Jameela Jamil in Monique Lhullier was my least fave in both these trends. It looked off-centered and awkward (though she gets points for admitting she did her own makeup).

 

It takes talent for a dress to look both too sheer and too heavy, but Amy Adams‘ dowdy Fendi managed to do just that.

 

Red and pink colour blocked dresses were a huge theme on the red carpet, worn by Marisa Tomei, Taraji P. Henson, Susan Kelechi Watson, and more. For my money (and I know I’m in the minority here), Mandy Moore was the most awkward in a droopy Brandon Maxwell dress that looked like it was always on the verge of falling off. The vampy hair and makeup were on point, though.

 

 

 

Jennifer Lopez Wears Her Iconic Green Dress at Versace’s Fashion Show

-Nearly 20 years after she wore it at the Grammy Awards, Jennifer Lopez just closed out the Versace S/S 2020 show by walking the runway in her infamous jungle print dress. She looks the same — maybe better. What kind of sorcery is this?!?

-Ya know, for someone who claims he isn’t campaigning for an Oscar, Brad Pitt sure is everywhere. He appeared in a sketch on Jimmy Fallon last night, was grilled by a kid reporter for Ellen, and he gave an interview to CNN in which he said that when his then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow told him Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed her while she was working on Emma, he confronted him. “At that moment, I was just a boy from the Ozarks on the playground.. and that’s how we confronted with things.” (Paltrow has said that they ran into Weinstein at the Broadway opening of Hamlet and Pitt threatened to kill him if he ever made her feel uncomfortable again.)

-The reviews for the Downton Abbey movie are really positive. I wouldn’t be surprised if this thing kills at the box office this weekend.

-In a new interview, Lucy Boynton says boyfriend Rami Malek‘s fans can get too handsy for her liking. “It’s lovely to see people who are excited about his work — if they’ve seen Mr. Robot or Freddie — but it’s just that thing of people grabbing him. I mean, you’d never grab a complete stranger in the street. And I think there’s a sense of ownership. It’s OK to just come up to someone, with your camera already out, and disregard whoever they’re with. It happened when we were with my mother, and we were just shoved out of the way. It’s quite shocking.”

-Here’s the first footage of Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in season three of The Crown. She looks amazing!

-In her new memoir, Demi Moore says she regrets having two threesomes with Ashton Kutcher during their marriage, which she says he then used as an excuse to cheat on her. “Because we had brought a third party into our relationship, Ashton said, that blurred the lines and, to some extent, justified what he’d done.”

–Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman took a break from their social media trolling to enjoy a cup of coffee together in NYC.

–Mayim Bialik is re-teaming with her Big Bang Theory on-screen husband, Jim Parsons, for a Fox comedy called Carla.

-I enjoyed this oral history on Little Women.

-I was sure it was going to be cancelled, so I’m glad Netflix is giving GLOW a fourth and final season. That being said, I’m kinda bummed about this new TV landscape where we can’t expect shows to get renewed past seasons 3 or 4.  This thread sums it up well.

-The Between Two Ferns movie drops on Netflix today, and this clip of Keanu Reeves makes me wanna watch it. The Paul Rudd bit is good too — mostly because he spends the entirety of it trying not to break.

-The more Joker reviews I read from female critics, the less I want to watch it.

–Kanye West and Kim Kardashian got a visit from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department after they shared a video on social media of them harassing wild antelope.

-I love how Google is incorporating pop culture references into their entertainment-related searches. Search Friends Ross and click on the couch, Friends Pheobe and click on the guitar, or Wizard of Oz and click on the shoes.

-This is super sweet: Will Smith surprised the two kids who went viral on social media for a clip of them giving a bullied kid new clothes.

-The Quebec film Antigone has been selected to represent Canada at the Oscars. I didn’t catch it but it got raves at TIFF.

–Blake Lively is like a female, wonky-accented John Wick in the trailer for The Rhythm Section.

 

Shia LaBeouf Says He Wrestled Tom Hardy Naked

–Shia LaBeouf told a story about wrestling Tom Hardy while naked that has to be heard to be believed.

-One day after Nick Carter filed a restraining order against his younger brother Aaron, court documents reveal that Aaron allegedly told their sister he “thinks about killing babies and has thought about killing [Nick’s pregnant] wife, Lauren.”

-A heavily bearded George Clooney appeared at a news conference in London to call for ending human rights abuses in South Sudan after presenting findings of a new report from his watchdog group, The Sentry.

–Tom Welling will reprise his Smallville role in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths. At some point in the very near future, it will be easier to list who *won’t* be appearing in this thing.

–Celine Dion is not impressed by rumours that Drake wants to get her face tattooed on his body. “Please Drake, I love you very much. Can I tell you something? Don’t do that. You can write me love letters, you can send me autographs for my kids, you can come and visit. I can have you home for lunch or dinner, we can go for a drink, we can sing together. Whatever you want to do. I can talk to your mother. Whatever you want, but please…”

-Yay for Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, who just landed an overall deal with ABC Studios. I will always remember him as the host of the first after show I’d ever seen — for The Hills, of all things.

-I binged Netflix’s Unbelievable (not a great idea, considering the subject matter) and I couldn’t get over how empathetic it was. All of the performances were great, including Toni Collette and Kaitlyn Dever, but I think Merritt Wever in particular is doing something special here. She so quietly powerful.

–Connie Britton doesn’t think a Friday Night Lights reboot is a good idea. Preach!!

-A reboot I can get behind is The Nanny with Cardi B.

–This video of Jennifer Lopez learning her routines for Hustlers is insane.

–Sarah Silverman says “cancel culture” is “a mutated McCarthy era, where any comic better watch anything they say.” Uh, hard pass. Comedians can say whatever they want — but they also shouldn’t be excused from the consequences.

-Here’s the first trailer Alfre Woodard‘s Clemency. Just Mercy was the death row film that got the most amount of buzz at TIFF, but this one has stuck with me since seeing it.
