Viola Davis Gives Powerful Speech at Women’s March

-Celebrities joined the women’s march on Saturday and offered some rousing speeches. Scarlett Johansson (not a particularly unproblematic spokesperson but ok) talked about gender equality, Halsey wrote a gutting poem, and Viola Davis brought the roof down.

-On the day when hundreds and thousands of women took to the streets, Ciara shared a video that tells women how to find a husband. Gross.

-Every time Jennifer Garner calls her Alias costar Victor Garberspy daddy,” I get a little choked up.

-Oh. My. God. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are bringing the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows to the small screen. This is incredible news.

-It was a weekend of famous dudes that I didn’t even know were in a relationship getting engaged. Ed Sheeran debuted his new relationship status on Instagram, and Darren Criss popped the question to Mia Swier.

Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis will announce the Oscar nominations tomorrow. Uh oh. Does this mean she isn’t getting one? Because that seems to be the trend with announcers lately.

Tracee Ellis Ross clarified her Blackish salary dispute, and seems to dispel the rumours that she threatened to cut back on her hours.

-If Stranger Things star David Harbour wants to dance with penguins, then internet, we need to make that happen!

Olivia Munn texted Anna Faris to make it clear that she’s not dating Chris Pratt, despite what the tabloids say.

-The Stark sisters are sticking together IRL. Maisie Williams is going to be Sophie Turner’s bridesmaid.

-On the SAG Awards red carpet, Alison Brie addressed the allegations of sexual misconduct made against her brother-in-law, James Franco by saying: “I think that above all what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone that feels victimized should and does have the right to speak out and come forward.”  So good! If she had stopped it right there, it would have been perfect. But then she had to go and add “not everything that’s been reported has been accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information.”

-Speaking of stars I like putting their foot in their mouth, William H Macy said at the SAGs: “It’s hard to be a man these days. I think a lot of us feel like we’re under attack and that we need to apologize, and perhaps we do.” He goes on to talk about what men can do as part of the Times Up movement, but that first part…yeesh.

-It turns out it was Lily Tomlin that Morgan Freeman was calling out at the start of his SAG speech.  I thought he was reprimanding someone for being on the phone or something.

Alexander Skarsgård brought his longtime BFF Jack McBrayer as his SAG Awards date. I didn’t know these guys were buddies, and now I’m obsessed with how that possibly came to be.

-Also, Skarsgård may be in the second season of Big Little Lies (which makes no sense).

Nick Offerman has no use for your Ron Swanson parody account.

-Some hits are starting to emerge from Sundance already. I love that The Miseducation of Cameron Post is getting such raves because that book was wonderful. Lizzie is also sparking buzz, possibly because Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny have hot barn sex and axe-murder a man together.

-This is a really good piece on how some of the pop culture romances we loved when we were young actually glorify or excuse predatory male behaviour.

-The Resident, Fox’s new medical drama starring Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp, debuted last night — but all anyone is talking about today is how one of the show’s staff writers managed to get a job there since he was investigated for sexual harassment on his two most recent shows, The Night Shift and Code Black.

-There’s a new Wrinkle in Time trailer. The more I see of this thing, the more I can’t wait!

SAG Awards 2018: Best and Worst Dressed

While the recent Golden Globes red carpet was a sea of black gowns, celebrities brought colour back in a big way at the SAG Awards (but weirdly, most seemed to drop the #TimeUp pins). But on the plus side, E! seemed to get the memo and asked actors about the movement instead of just talking about it with the actresses. Meanwhile, the winners were basically a repeat of the Globes with 3 Billboards leading the way, which…oof.

Fashion-wise, the good outweighed the bad, but not everyone knocked it out of the park. Here are my picks for the best and worst dressed at the 2018 SAG Awards.

BEST DRESSED:

Grownish star Yara Shahidi proves that jumpsuits can make just as much of an impact as a ballgown. This look is fire!

Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks‘ red and black sequined gown by Marc Bouwer is one of my faves of the night. Simply stunning.

Silver sequins are a very big theme on this red carpet, with Allison Janney and Olivia Munn serving up some fierce metallic looks. But no one did it better than Lupita Nyong’o in this flattering, form-fitting Ralph & Russo. I want to marry this dress.

I love Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer’s look. She knows how to dress for her petite frame, and the embellished skirt on her Christian Dior gown is a weird twist worthy of her show.

Gina Rodriguez is one of the few women to wear a #TimesUp pin which makes us love her. We’re also feeling the love for her detailed floral Rasario number.

Honourable mentions: Samira Wiley, Allison Williams, Brie Larson, Halle Berry and Mary J. Blige

WORST DRESSED:

Pale pink is a major theme, with Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Marsia Tomei, Laura Linney, Connie Britton, and Millie Bobby Brown all sporting the hue. Frankly, I don’t love any of them, but Saoirse Ronan is the worst for me. She’s always taking risks this year and I love her for it, but this Louis Vuitton dress is a miss. The silver strip looks like it was added at the last minute and is barely hanging on.

Kate Hudson has a badass new haircut and should be wearing a badass dress to match. Instead, she looks like an old-timey grandma in this matronly Maison Valentino.

When I first saw Laura Dern I could only see the top half of her Dior and was so hopeful. And then the camera panned down to reveal the sheer madness of the bottom. Any dress that makes it look like you’re wearing grey granny panties should be an automatic “no.”

I love the structure of Holly Hunter’s Paule Ka dress (and it has pockets!), but I hate the colour. To be fair to her, I’m not sure anyone could possibly make this work. Greta Gerwig had a similar colour issue with her dress.

How does a bad outfit like this happen to a good person like The Shape of Water star Sally Hawkins? I don’t understand.

Dishonourable mentions: Alison Brie, Nicole Kidman, Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Maya Rudolph

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Reveal New Baby’s Name

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West named their new daughter Chicago. Who do they think they are, the Beckhams? (j/k, I actually think it’s a cute name.)

-Meanwhile, Kim burned Lamar Odom on Twitter in a pretty spectacular fashion.

-In her new Billboard cover, Lorde talks about the #MeToo movement (“What is really interesting and important about this moment is that every man I know is having to check himself — having to be aware of his misogynistic biases, having to re-examine his understanding of consent”) and Cardi B’s lack of Grammy noms (“Cardi B should have gotten a nomination in one of those big categories. She kind of defined 2017”).

-The Mark Wahlberg story just gets worse and worse. It turns out that, despite being a secondary character in All The Money In The World, his regular salary was almost 10 times more than Michelle Williams (who was the female lead). He made $5 million, while Williams made a mere $625,000.

-Ooh boy. Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet claimed his contract blocked him from criticizing Woody Allen and supporting Dylan Farrow. Except it didn’t.

Colin Firth is the latest actor to say he’ll never work with Allen again.

-Meanwhile, this is a good look at why so many famous dudes still refuse to condemn Allen.

-Is it possible for Justin Timberlake to release an album without subtly dissing Britney Spears? Just once?

-Amazon canceled Tig Notaro‘s terrific One Mississippi. It’s a weird moment for Hollywood to be canceling so many women-led shows (Maria Bamford s Lady Dynamite and Jill Soloway‘s I Love Dick were also cut loose).

Frances McDormand talking about how Joel Coen seduced her on the set of Blood Simple with literature and hot chocolate is everything.

Gerard Butler used his fling with Real Housewives star Brandi Glanville for talk show fodder, and she was not having it.

Daniel Radcliffe goes to desperate lengths to save his wife in the Beast of Burden trailer.
