Anya Taylor-Joy’s Flower Power

Anya Taylor-Joy poses with sunflowers on the cover of InStyle

Anya Taylor-Joy covers Instyle’s Beauty Issue. She talks about how her friends keep her grounded (“I also have great friends who tease me mercilessly if I even hint at being overworked or stressed. They’re like, ‘Oh yeah, honey, it’s so sad that you have to go get on a plane and go do whatever'”) and learning boundaries (“I really struggle with wanting to give everybody everything all of the time”).

-Besides Dune, her new movie (Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho) is the hottest ticket at TIFF. A new trailer dropped today and it’s both creepy and intriguing.

-Big news broke last night: Jamie Spears asked a judge to end his daughter’s 13-year conservatorship. There’s chatter that he didn’t want to deal with the “pressure” Britney’s new attorney has kept up on him, accusing him of abusing his power over her and of dissipating her estate. He also resisted Jamie’s attempts to be compensated for stepping down as her conservator, saying there was nothing to negotiate and that Jamie should resign immediately.

-Though this is a good step forward, ending her conservatorship likely won’t be a quick process.

-Last night’s other big news: John Mulaney appeared on Seth Meyers’s show last night and spoke candidly about his intervention and subsequent trip to rehab, and confirmed he and Olivia Munn are expecting. Meanwhile, the discourse around him has grown exhausting. I think two things can be true at the same time: people are very invested in his personal life because he’s made that such a huge part of his standup that they’re now pushing back against (unjustified) feelings of betrayal, but also he traded on his rep as Hollywood’s “good guy/non-toxic celeb/the marriage guy” a little too heavily to make the timeline of events (not to mention his ex wife’s reactions) sit well with some folks. This thread pretty much nails it.

-Speaking of the timeline, he opened the interview with some clarification (or revision?). He said he first went to rehab in September last year, split from his ex-wife in October, then relapsed and went back to rehab for two months, and didn’t start dating Munn until the spring.

Kylie Jenner announced that she and Travis Scott are going to have another baby with this cute Instagram video, and fans are convinced she hinted it’s a boy.

Bob Odenkirk posted a photo of himself look happy and healthy back on the set of Better Call Saul.

-This Vulture review of Drake‘s new album is the best one I’ve read yet. “It is a trip through a world we already know. There are no surprises in its landscapes. Maybe this is the source of its appeal.”

Nicole Kidman made an ad about why everyone should return to AMC, and a lot of people are pointing out that her watching movies in an empty theatre is kind of missing the point.

Eva Longoria has resigned from the Time’s Up board amid the organization’s turmoil.

-Though no official cause of death has been determined yet, authorities are reportedly investigating Michael K. Williams‘ passing as an overdose.

-Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has been officially revived by as a Christmas TV movie by Roku, marking their foray into original programming.

-Netflix dropped a trailer for Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan‘s follow up to The Haunting of Bly Manor. Saracen!

Riz Ahmed plays a Marine who goes on a rescue mission to save his two young sons from an alien threat in the Encounter trailer.

-The first teaser for Netflix’s star-packed Don’t Look Up has arrived. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet and Meryl Streep.

Jennifer Hudson Talks Playing Aretha

Law Roach is on fire right now. He styled pregnant Halsey’s Allure cover, as well as InStyle’s Jennifer Hudson one. In the interview, JHud talks about stepping into Aretha Franklin’s shoes for her new biopic Respect, and how her dogs predict success. “I got the dog Oscar before I won my Oscar for Dreamgirls. And then I said, ‘Oscar needs a wife. So how about I get a dog and name it Grammy, and maybe I’ll win a Grammy.’ And then I got the dog Grammy, and I won the Grammy.”

-In his new GQ profile, Jason Sudeikis says he still doesn’t know why Olivia Wilde left him after nine years together. “I’ll have a better understanding of why in a year, and an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it’ll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle.” He added, “That’s an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about. You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it.” He also confirmed they split “in November 2020” (so months after their rumoured split in March 2020, but before she was spotted holding hands with Harry Styles in January 2021).

-The Crown, Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, and the recently cancelled Lovecraft Country were some of the shows leading the Emmy nominations this morning. I’m glad that Ted Lasso scored 20 nods, including 6 for Supporting Actor/Actress (all but Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie), that The Boys snuck into Best Drama category, that Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You got some love, and that Jean Smart was nominated for both Hacks and Mare of Easttown. But it sucks that Girls5Eva didn’t make it into the Best Comedy section.

-I agree that these five nominees are among the top to root for. Roy Kent!

-Eyewitnesses claim that video of Justin Bieber appearing to yell at wife Hailey Bieber is misleading.

Britney Spears’ personal conservator Jodi Montgomery claims her dad, Jamie Spears, used $2 million of her funds for his defense.

Scarlett Johansson chatted with Seth Meyers about her pandemic wedding to Colin Jost. “Obviously we wanted to take all the precautions, every precaution that we could, so we had the masks [with ‘Jost 2020’ on them] made. It definitely was a weird party favor that could only happen now, but you just gotta go with it.”

Drake‘s girlfriend has been revealed to be 40-year-old model Johanna Leia, who he’s reportedly been dating for several months.

-Seems like Olivia Rodrigo is over that guy she wrote “Driver’s License” about; she’s dating Adam Faze.

-I always worry that Joshua Jackson is going to end up disappointing me, but not today! His Esquire interview is excellent, especially the part where he talks about having a home birth because “the American medical system has a horrendous track record with Black women.” The accompanying video is also great, including when they ask why he’s turned his Instagram into a stan account for his wife. “I think it’s important to celebrate women in media where they want to be, rather than the objects that we want them to be.” Gah! Perfection!!

-I liked this love letter to the bad girls of 90s teen dramas. Justice for Rayanne Graff, Kim Kelly and Jen Lindley!

-A video appears to show Mel Gibson saluting Donald Trump as he arrived at UFC 264 on Saturday evening. How is anyone at all surprised by this?

-Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet were all kinds of cute together at Cannes.

-For the same premiere, Owen Wilson (who I’m convinced will end up being the bad guy in this week’s Loki finale, because the person behind the TVA can’t just be some random dude, right?!) also looked great.

-Meanwhile, here’s a clip from the movie (Wes Anderson‘s The French Dispatch), featuring Chalamet having a bath in front of Frances McDormand.

-I’m very ready to watch Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino kick butt in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake this weekend, which is getting decent reviews.

-Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s conversion therapy documentary Pray Away, from producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, and directed by Kristine Stolakis.

-Disney/Pixar’s new movie Turning Red takes place in Toronto!

Christina Aguilera Defends Britney Spears

Christina Aguilera took to Twitter and Instagram to speak out in defense of Britney Spears, saying her Mickey Mouse Club alum has “the right to her own body, her own reproductive system, her own privacy.”

Kevin Federline also issued a statement supporting Spears. I’ve often wondered where he is on all this, seeing as he has primary custody of their boys. A couple of years ago he got a restraining order against her dad, alleging that he shook a then 13-year-old Sean Preston.

-This profile on Rosie O’Donnell’s show (which turns 25) is incredibly compelling, especially in contrast to current talk show hosts. She insisted on giving staffers paid summers between the seasons, free on-set day-care, and longer contracts for job security. When Warner Bros. warned such perks would “set a precedent,” and says she countered, “I don’t really care. If you want me to do the show, you have to be kind to the people who work here making you millions of dollars.” (I also loved the bit about Tom Cruise being nervous about which flowers to give her on his long-awaited appearance.)

-This is a great cover story on Annie Murphy, who is having a moment.

Kim Kardashian is launching a home goods line, which is weird because her house is famously devoid of home goods.

-It looks like Jason Sudeikis really is dating his Ted Lasso costar, Keeley Hazell. (She plays Bex, Rupert’s girlfriend.)

-Speaking of relationship rumours, Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp appear to be back on.

Andra Day laughed off rumours that she’s dating Brad Pitt. “Oh my gosh, child…we’ve never met.”

-The L Word’s Sarah Shahi and Shameless star Steve Howey finalized their divorce earlier this year, and she’s now gone public with her relationship with Sex/Life costar Adam Demos.

-But really the only thing people are talking about when it comes to Netflix’s Sex/Life is Demosfull frontal scene in episode three.

-That’s So Raven’s Kyle Massey was charged with a felony after he allegedly sent messages of a “sexual nature” to a 13-year-old girl.

John Lithgow is returning for a “short but decisive” appearance in the Dexter reboot.

-Three weeks into its streaming release, Manifest is still the top show on Netflix, despite its cancellation on NBC and the fact that Netflix passed on picking it up.

-We’re getting season 3 of The Wine Show with Matthew Goode, Matthew Rhys, James Purefoy and Dominic West.

-Hulu’s This Way Up returns in July. I adored this show.

-I didn’t see this coming, but Good Omens has been renewed by Amazon Prime for a season two.

-Also pleasantly surprising: A Quiet Place 2 will stream in Canada on Amazon Prime, starting July 13.

-The Sopranos is one of my pop culture blindspots (I think I watched a few episodes? Maybe?) so I have little interest in the prequel, The Many Saints Of Newark. But it is very sweet that Tony Soprano is played by Michael Gandolfini, the son of the late James Gandolfini. Here’s the trailer.

Kate Beckinsale stars as a badass bouncer with anger issues in the official trailer for Jolt, coming to Amazon Prime Video on July 23. This looks like silly fun, and the supporting cast is stacked: Bobby Cannavale, Jai Courtney, Laverne Cox, David Bradley, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci.
