Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell are Promising Young Women

-Christmas Day is going to be a bonanza of new content. We’ve got Bridgeton on Netflix, Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max and Promising Young Woman on video on demand. (I had no idea that writer-director of PYW is Emerald Fennell, who played Camilla on the most recent season of The Crown.) She and Carey Mulligan cover Variety and talk about making the most audacious, feminist movie of the year.

-Speaking of cover stories, this is a very good one from THR on the career implosion of Johnny Depp, a casualty of Hollywood’s sycophant culture in which his wild spending and substance abuse were rarely challenged. “He’s just never been told no for the past 35 years.” Some of the highlights: despite being fired from Fantastic Beasts after only shooting one scene, he’ll still be paid his full $16-million fee due to him having “a pay-or-play contract, which requires that he be fully compensated whether or not the film is made and even if it is recast,” production on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales had to be shut down for two weeks after Depp reportedly swallowed eight ecstasy pills, and his romantic partners allegedly include former co-stars Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard, and Keira Knightley.

–Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn cover the latest issue of People and talk about their 37-year relationship. “People who have been together for a long time, they experience something that only people who have been together for a long time can talk about and relate to. For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have.”

-This is a great piece on how 2020 was the year celebrities lost their shine. “With little else to do, celebrities have been showing their asses at every opportunity. Similarly, as we sit at home with nothing to do, we have been more than willing to hand their asses to them with newfound rigour.” (Dolly Parton is the only celeb I can think of who is ending the year with an even stronger reputation than she started it with.)

-Is EVERYONE going to be in the new Spider-Man movie? Charlie Cox is reportedly reprising his Netflix role as Daredevil in MCU’s Spider-Man 3.

-Disgraced Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz has entered treatment for anxiety, depression, and burnout.

-A True Blood reboot is in the works at HBO. This is weird, mostly because there are SO many buzzy supernatural books out there right now that they could adapt instead. When True Blood was good, it was good but I remember longgggg stretches where it was very, very bad.

–Shawn Mendes played Spill Your Guts with James Corden and had to eat blood and pork jelly to avoid picking between who he liked collaborating with more: Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift. He also refused to answer how much he’s been paid for his Armani endorsement, which led to him eating scorpion dusted plantains.

–Nicolas Cage enthusiastically gives an etymological lesson on the word “pussy” in the first trailer for Netflix’s History of Swear Words, debuting Jan 5.

–Natalie Portman appeared on Dax Shepard’s podcast discussed how “being sexualized as a child took away from my own sexuality because it made me afraid. It made me feel like the way I can be safe is to be like, ‘I’m conservative, and I’m serious, and you should respect me, and I’m smart and don’t look at me that way.'”

-Memoirs continue to be a cash cow for celebs. Amazon Studios is prepping a new docuseries about Jessica Simpson based on her memoir, while Mariah Carey says she’s in talks for a potential movie or TV series based on hers.

-Mariah also gave props to Vulture’s latest article on her pop perfection.

–Victoria Beckham gushed about son Brooklyn’s wife-to-be Nicola Peltz in a new interview. “They’re so happy. She’s wonderful, sweet, and kind. She’s such a lovely, warm woman. We couldn’t have asked for Brooklyn to meet a more adorable lady. We’re very, very happy. We love her, he’s so happy.”

–Jason Sudeikis talked about how his character on Ted Lasso was inspired by Robin Williams. I didn’t think I was going to like that show, but it ended up as one of my faves of the year.

-The Riverdale season 5 trailer proves the show is still as bonkers as ever.

-A married man is tricked into a murder scheme by a police detective in the trailer for Fatale, starring Michael Ealy and Hilary Swank.

Shawn Mendes Teases Fans with Shower Scene

-The trailer for the new Shawn Mendes doc is out and it starts with him in the shower, which means Netflix has a lock on what his fans wanna see.

–Dominic West is reportedly in talks to play Prince Charles in the fifth and sixth seasons of The Crown, which is kind of delicious considering the past few weeks.

–Mark Ruffalo has jumped to Chris Pratt’s defense, calling him “not overtly political.”

–Kim Kardashian sat down with David Letterman for his Netfix show and offered a clue as to why the family is ending their reality series: “Realistically, we can post something on social media and make more than we do a whole season.” Gawd, that’s depressing.

-After postponing their wedding twice, Taraji P. Henson and fiancé Kelvin Hayden have decided to split.

-Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey used his OnlyFans account to confirm he’s hooked up with guys. Didn’t he already do this, or am I just getting it confused with all the blind items?

-BIPOC members of the cast of Glow shared a letter they sent to Netflix before the show was cancelled, asking the creators asking for better representation.

-Netflix once again proves that you shouldn’t fall in love with their shows unless you like heartbreak — they canceled Away, starring Hilary Swank and Josh Charles. I’m surprised by this one; it felt like a show that critics didn’t love or talk about but was drawing in the type of quietly loyal audience that watches CBS procedurals.

-Netflix confirmed that Dawson’s Creek won’t have its iconic theme song when it hits the streaming giant’s library next month, instead replaced with Jann Arden’s “Run Like Mad.” Good for her!

-I know this is sounding like a broken record, but my god, what’s going on with Britney Spears’ Instagram?

–Harvey Weinstein’s request for a bail release pending appeal has been denied, reportedly due to his overwhelming amount of resources and motive to flee the country.

–Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are reprising their Hocus Pocus roles for a virtual reunion on Oct 30. Tickets are $10 to support the New York Restoration Project and special guests will include Meryl Streep, Jennifer Hudson, Glenn Close, Elvira, Billy Crystal, Billy Eichner, Adam Lambert, Thora Birch, Sarah Silverman, Martin Short and more.

-Warner Bros. is eager to release Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020, but there likely won’t be decision about its debut for at least another few weeks as movie theatres in parts of New York are reopening. I still don’t think it’s gonna happen this year.

–Jake Gyllenhaal is teaming up with Canadian director Denis Villeneuve for a new HBO limited series. (I still haven’t forgiven either of them for the ending of their last project together, Enemy.)

–Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fischer hosted a Borat screening that was attended by Katy Perry, Josh Gad and Ariana Grande.

-Aw man, Jeff Bridges announced on Twitter last night that he has lymphoma.

-We could all use a little good news and Zendaya is delivering: two special episodes of Euphoria are coming to HBO in December.

–This voting PSA from the Succession cast made me really miss Succession!

–Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis‘ gay romcom is coming to Hulu, which sucks for us Canadians.

–Viola Davis plays legendary blues singer Ma Rainey alongside Chadwick Boseman in his last role in the trailer for Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

 

Cardi B Lands the September Issue of Elle

–Cardi B’s first Elle cover happens to be its most important. She doesn’t waste it either, using the interview to call out male rappers for not talking about Breonna Taylor (“She was young. She looked like she was listening to your music. She looked like she was your fan. You should stick up for her”), and criticize Trump (“Those people that he caters [to], he’s not going to do anything for them. It’s not like Republicans are getting better housing. It’s not like Republicans are getting better benefits. They’re not. He’s not doing anything for anybody”). She also addresses her controversial marriage to Offset (“I do know that my relationship has a lot of drama and everything. But there’s a lot of love, there’s a lot of passion, there’s a lot of trust, there’s a big friendship. It’s always us against the world”).

-In her new Cosmo cover story, Joey King reveals that it wasn’t easy pretending to be in love with Jacob Elordi for Kissing Booth 2 – who she split from in real life. “No one’s thinking to themselves, That was easy, because it wasn’t. I’m sure people will analyze every movement and every detail. And you know what? Let them. But at the end of the day, I was just thrilled to be Elle Evans again…What’s the most, um, correct way to go about this? Elle Evans needs her Noah Flynn, and whatever that means for my personal life, I’ll do anything to make sure the story of my character who I care about so much is complete.”

-In her Health cover story, Hilary Swank talks about returning to Hollywood after taking a five year break to care for her dad.

–Beyoncé made a fan’s day by surprising her with a sweet phone call.

-I don’t believe any numbers/ratings put out by streaming companies, but a third party analyst claims Hamilton got blockbuster views.

–Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the house DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, made a supportive (I think?) comment about working for her, saying “We can’t speak too much legally about it, but I’ll say this, there’s been love. Obviously there’s some things to address, but from my standpoint and from countless others, there’s been love.”

-Former castmates and friends toast Eugene Levy while he tries not to tear up in this video.

-If I had to guess which new movie is actually going to make it into theatres in two weeks, it wouldn’t be New Mutants, which has suffered multiple delays in the past two years.

–Kanye West met with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner last week  — and TMZ is saying that Kim knew nothing about it.

-This is a fantastic NYT profile on Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards and why she stepped away from the music industry for so long.

–Viola Davis didn’t actually purchase the former South Carolina plantation where she was born 55 years ago — her caption meant she owns the “story” not the house.

-This is a pretty great list of the 100 best TV characters of the 21st century. Love seeing Tami Taylor, Tom Wambsgans, Arabella, Forrest MacNeil, Elizabeth Jennings, Paper Boi, and Blair Waldorf make the top 20.
