Tom Cruise Thinks Tenet’s Worth Dying For

–Tom Cruise posted a video about going to see Tenet in a crowded theatre and saying “Welcome back to the movies everybody.” I know this was shot in London, but this still feels wildly irresponsible. It doesn’t help that he’s wearing a vented mask.

-I agree with this take on how Christopher Nolan has handled this whole thing has really soured my view of him.

-Some major film publications are refusing to review The New Mutants because Disney did not make screening links available or offer socially-distanced press screenings to film critics.

-In a new interview Jon Hamm says he’s already seen a cut of Top Gun: Maverick and gives it two thumbs up: “It just has that amazing Tom Cruise, tentpole blockbuster, summertime thing. It’s so good. Obviously, Tom knocks it out of the park and all the young kids are great in it. It’s the movie equivalent of a fist pump. You’re just like, ‘Yes!’ It’s exactly what it’s meant to be.”

–Meghan Markle and Gloria Steinem sat down to record a backyard chat to talk about representation, women’s rights, and voting. In the preview video, their dogs make a surprise appearance.

-I loved Fringe and am seriously considering a quarantine rewatch, but actress Jasika Nicole is right about how terrible the show’s running joke about mispronouncing her character’s name was. She also tweeted that at the beginning, she wasn’t given rides to work despite all the regular cast members getting it, and that one director refused to learn her name. “It was so bad that josh [Jackson] found a name tag, wrote the phonetic spelling of my name on it, and put it on his shirt, knowing the director would pay attention to HIM, might show me some respect that way. josh was trying to use his power/clout for good. Still didn’t work tho.”

–Jennifer Garner posted a cute video making fun of herself for crying over the finale of The Office.

-This is a good review of Lovecraft Country.  I was blown away by last week’s premiere, but the follow up episode was surprisingly shaky.

–Natalia Dyer says she feels protective of her younger Stranger Things costars: “I generally feel like, to me, it’s oversexualizing them. I feel protective over the younger kids even though they’re not kids anymore, they’re teens. They’re all great people and all having to grow up in very crazy circumstances.”

-In the first Enola Holmes trailer, Millie Bobby Brown is on the case. Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham-Carter costar in the upcoming Netflix film. This is a *very* good trailer!

–Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan fall in love in the trailer for Ammonite. It will premiere at TIFF — which, thanks to the fact that the festival will be mostly digital this year, anyone in Canada can get tickets to! Digital screenings are $19 each and you get the movie for 24 hours. Tickets go onsale to the general public on Sept 5.

Chris Evans Sends Captain American Shield To Young Hero

–Chris Evans sent an incredibly sweet video message to Bridger, the little boy who protected his sister from a dog attack. Anne Hathaway, Mark Ruffalo, Winston Duke and other stars have also shouted him out.

-This 5-minute video of Henry Cavill building a computer from scratch is simultaneously hot and relaxing.

-The Bold Type’s Aisha Dee, who plays Kat, posted about her frustration over the lack of diversity behind the scenes of the show. She also echoed many fans’ disappointment for her character’s bizarre new relationship with a rich conservative woman, saying that it felt “felt confusing and out of character.” She added, “It was heartbreaking to watch Kat’s story turn into a redemption story for someone else, someone who is complicit in the oppression of so many. Someone whose politics are actively harmful to her communities.” The season finale airs tonight, ending an abbreviated season after production was shut down due to covid.

–Prince Andrew’s website has been removed.

-With Britney Spears‘ conservatorship nearing its August 22 deadline, #FreeBritney is trending again. Anyone who follows gossip has known for years how messed up her situation is, but now it seems to finally be hitting mainstream consciousness, with multiple sites posting backgrounders this week.

-It’s also in the news because her mother Lynne Spears has filed a legal request to be more in the know about “all matters” surrounding Britney’s finances and trust.

–Cory Monteith‘s mom talked about his friendship with Naya Rivera in an emotional Instagram post.

–Cardi B is defending Offset’s present to their two-year-old daughter: a $20k Birken bag.

-In Johnny Depp‘s libel case, the court heard a witness statement provided by Winona Ryder: “I understand that it is very important that I speak from my own experience, as I obviously was not there during his marriage to Amber, but, from my experience, which was so wildly different, I was absolutely shocked, confused and upset when I heard the accusations against him. The idea that he is an incredibly violent person is the farthest thing from the Johnny I knew and loved. I cannot wrap my head around these accusations. He was never, never violent towards me. He was never, never abusive at all towards me. He has never been violent or abusive towards anybody I have seen.” Vanessa Paradis‘ statement was also read, in which she said: “This is nothing like the true Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience of many years, I can say he was never violent or abusive to me.”

–Amanda Peet and Sarah Paulson did a wonderfully chaotic IG Live for Instyle. (This short clip perfectly sums up the energy.) They call each other “Bird” and have been friends since Jack & Jill, a terrible show I used to love.

-Barely 24 hours after NBC’s new streaming service Peacock launched, some movies are already being removed. So strange, especially since one of the movies is Shrek, which was a major part of their marketing.

Taylor Swift Puts Scooter Braun on Blast

–Taylor Swift accepted the Billboard Woman of the Decade award last night and she used her speech to blast Scooter Braun. Among the highlights: “Scooter never contacted me or my team to discuss it prior to the sale or even when it was announced. I’m fairly certain he knew exactly how I would feel about it, though. And let me just say that the definition of toxic male privilege in our industry is people saying, ‘But he’s always been nice to me’ when I’m raising valid concerns about artists and their rights to own their music. And, of course, he’s nice to people in this room; you have something he needs…Private equity is what enabled this man to think, according to his own social media posts, that he could ‘buy me.’ Well, I’m obviously not going willingly.”

-All the yes to the NYT’s take on the garbage fire that has been this season of Survivor: “In a workplace — a morally and legally responsible one, anyway — just imagine if you responded to documented misconduct by telling your employess: Well, you deal with it if you don’t like it. Imagine telling them the only way for them to get rid of their inappropriate coworder was through a public vote, at risk of personal loss and possibly being voted out themselves? Then imagine putting the whole thing on broadcast TV as a lesson to America in what happens when you speak up.”

-Meanwhile, CBS announced the reunion show won’t be airing live as per usual. Instead they will be taping it that afternoon due to “security concerns.” Oh sure. I’m certain that it has nothing to do with the fact that if any contestant criticized CBS or Jeff Probst on the handling of all this on the live show, they wouldn’t be able to edit it out.

-On Ellen’s show, Jason Momoa surprised a couple with an all-expenses-paid trip around the world for their “dream honeymoon” because they haven’t been able to go anywhere after an accident left the husband paralyzed.

–Justin Timberlake also got into the surprise gift giving action for Ellen.

-I’m actually kind of surprised that Shazam is getting a sequel.

–Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach discuss their relationship in the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Says Greta: “It’s exciting to have mutual acknowledgment of the work that he and I have both put into [our movies]. There is a sense of wanting to show off for each other. At least on my part. I remember when I showed Noah cuts or drafts of Little Women. He’s my favourite filmmaker and my favourite writer. It means everything to me that he thinks it’s good.”
