Ana de Armas Gets Her Turn

Ana de Armas vanity fair

-I was actually surprised by the lack of coverage Ana de Armas was getting after her scene-stealing performance in Knives Out, so it’s great to see her land a Vanity Fair cover story. (Written by Sloane Crosley, no less!)

-In her new Variety cover story, Kerry Washington talks steering her own career after Scandal, and tackling the challenge of Little Fires Everywhere.

-If you can ignore the weird flourishes from the author, this is a good NYT interview with Ben Affleck on his struggle to stay sober.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are skipping Prince Andrew’s 60th birthday party on February 19, citing “commitments.” Is it because they’re committed to not celebrating a possible sex offender?

Justin Bieber got emotional while talking about protecting Billie Eilish. She posted the video on IG, with images of her old bedroom adorned with his posters.

-Meanwhile, Billie says she’s stopped reading comments on her social posts because they were “ruining” her life. Smart cookie.

Britney Spears‘ Womanizer video from 2008 is suddenly and inexplicably one of YouTube’s most viewed videos — and no one knows why.

-This is a good piece on how The Flash hired its first black showrunner in season six, and it’s finally acknowledging that Iris is black. “I feel more comfortable bringing up concerns that I have, and I feel like those concerns are received and listened to a little differently,” Candice Patton says, adding that she’s addressed longstanding issues like the way in which her skin was lit during scenes or having access to artists equipped to style her hair and do her makeup.

-I tend to not love celeb couple ads, but Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr‘s Cascade commercial is very cute and I want them to have all the success in the world so let’s just allow it.

Dwayne Wade was on GMA today and talked about daughter Zaya: “I knew that I had to check myself. I have been a person in the locker room who has been part of the conversation that has said the wrong phrases and wrong words…As I got older and watched my daughter grow, I had to go look at myself in the mirror and say: Who are you?”

Jameela Jamil‘s boyfriend James Blake has jumped to her defense.

Stephanie Beatriz cried while meeting Dan Levy on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show, and praised his impact on the queer community. Then he praised hers. Then everyone was crying and it was all very adorable.

-I haven’t really loved Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector test segments because most of the questions are such softballs but the Noah Centineo and Lana Condor one is actually great — mostly because they lie.

-First Alison Brie alluded to it on Reddit, and now Yvette Nicole Brown is hinting at a Community movie on Twitter.

-We’re already talking about next year’s possible Oscar contenders? Settle down, Hollywood.

Jessie J and Channing Tatum having impromptu dance parties to Sam Smith songs is very cute.

-Congrats to Patti Murin and Colin Donnell, who are expecting their first kid. I love them both even though I don’t think I watch anything they’re actually in.

-The Fug Girls have written a follow up to The Royal We and why are they starting the promo tour so early when it doesn’t come out until July? The wait is going to be torture.

-Pete Davidson plays a grown ass man who hangs out with a 16-year-old kid in the trailer for Big Time Adolescence.

-Here’s the trailer for the Apple+ revival of Steven Spielberg‘s anthology series Amazing Stories.

Domhnall Gleeson and Merritt Weaver escape their lives in the first trailer for HBO’s Run, produced by Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Vicky Jones. Weaver plays a woman living a humdrum existence who one day gets a text from an old flame inviting her to fulfill a youthful pact.

Mae Martin created and stars in Netflix’s Feel Good, a semi-autobiographical exploration of love, addiction, and sexuality that critics are loving.

Zoë Kravitz Goes Makeup-Free for Harper’s Bazaar

zoe-kravitz-no-makeup-harpers-bazaar

Zoë Kravitz goes completely unretouched (and looks phenomenal) on her new Harper’s Bazaar cover. She talks about previous magazine Photoshop experiences: “I did a cover of a magazine once and noticed that my eyes were this beautiful hazel-green color, which would be great, but they’re not that color! Little things like that. I’ve seen my hands be changed before. It makes you think, “What’s wrong with my hands? Or my eyes?”

-So, despite those reports, Hailey Baldwin is denying that she and Justin Bieber got married this week.

Ariana Grande posted a very sweet IG video of Mac Miller, saying “I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix it or take your pain away.”

Lady Gaga reveals what she thinks is her #1 look ever in Vogue’s 73 questions. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t the meat dress. (Sidenote: is this the most stationary 73Q segment ever? I wanna see her house!)

-In a recent interview, Bradley Cooper addressed the news that A Star Is Born producer Jon Peters has been sued by at least five former employees for sexual harassment.

-This interview with TATBILB’s Noah Centineo (“the best thirst architect the internet’s ever seen”) is great. I LOVE that the author made him recreate the pocket spin with her!

Meaghan Markle is reportedly having trouble figuring out which of her friends she can trust, while her former Suits costars are struggling with being asked about her all the time. (I get it; we saw Patrick Adams hanging out at TIFF and it was hard not to bug him about it.)

Cardi B hits back at Nicki Minaj’s payola claims. (Is payola still a thing? Radio plays don’t seem to matter much these days…)

-Modern Family will kill off a main character in Season 10. Wait, Modern Family is still on?!?

-God, I love that Candice Patton of The Flash is calling out DC/Funko for releasing figurines for only the show’s male characters. Even Wally West got one? Come on.

-First Brandon Routh‘s wife, now Stephen Amell’s wife. If you want a role on the CW, just marry one of its stars.

-For reasons I can’t begin to comprehend, the New York Review of Books let Jian Ghomeshi write a self-pitying, self-pardoning reflection on his ouster from Canadian media. (I love that everyone is circulating a link to this PDF instead of the actual article itself to avoid contributing to its pageviews.) It is so tone-deaf that it has to be seen to be believed (it begins with a woman *apologizing to him* for bringing up what he did, and ends with him congratulating himself for meeting a woman on a train and not trying to hook up with her). Many people much smarter than I am have pointed out the piece’s problems, but I think my issue with his article — and Louis C.K.’s return and all of these comebacks and handwringing about their reputations/future — is that not one of these men are actually acknowledging that they’ve contemplated the hurt they’ve caused their victims and/or learned from it. Dan Harmon‘s apology and subsequent actions is the only guy that comes to mind.

-Meanwhile, my favourite reaction is Roxanne Gay’s tweet: “I wonder which publication will give a victim of sexual harassment or violence 7,000 words to discuss her or his experience.”

Julie Chen signed off Big Brother last night as “Julie Chen Mooves” so…yeah.

-Is Jake Gyllenhall the patron saint of movies? First he helped the latest Halloween movie get off the ground, and now comes word that he also helped If Beale Street Could Talk happen.

John Goodman and Vera Farmiga star in the Captive State trailer.

Hollywood Heavyweights Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon and More Say #TimesUp

-God, I’m relieved it’s so much more than black dresses at awards shows. Yesterday, in unity, 300 Hollywood women  announced the launch of Time’s Up, a new initiative which includes a legal fund aimed to protect sexual harassment victims in every workplace, from janitors to waitresses to factory workers, and specially immigrant women. Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon, Donna Langley, and Nina Shaw are among the key players. Contributors to the defense fund include Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Stacey Snider, Dana Walden, Regina King, Felicity Huffman, Megan Ellison, Kate Hudson, Viola Davis, Ava DuVernay, Alicia Vikander, Amy Poehler, Olivia Munn, Taylor Swift, Jessica Chastain and more. Learn more at their website.

Hoda Kotb has been named a permanent Today Show co-host, taking over for Matt Lauer after his firing due to sexual harassment complaints. I wonder if she’s also taking over his reported $20 million salary?

-Here’s an interesting look at how men are losing their jobs over sexual harassment — and women are replacing them.

-And here’s a look at the female-led plans to turn the Weinstein Co’s tainted assets into something positive.

-The Hollywood Reporter has created a sexual-misconduct beat and assigned seven reporters, who are “fielding ten to fifteen tips a day.”

-Lots of people on Twitter are speculating that the next man to be exposed will be Max Landis. But will he?

-Huh. Paris Hilton is engaged to the Chris Zylka, aka guy who played Justin Theroux’s son on The Leftovers.  Double huh: He somehow got her a 20-carat ring, $2 million ring.

-This article on how Tom Hanks‘ Big is secretly a horror movie actually makes a lot of sense.

-One of my favourite New Year’s Day traditions is hungoverly scrolling through CDAN’s blind item reveals. I always skip right over the Old Hollywood ones, but I really gravitated towards the kindness ones this year for some reason (maybe because 2017 was such a garbage fire). Some of the best involved Ed Sheeran, Hugh Jackman, Bruce Willis and Ryan Seacreast.  In non-kindness ones, I really hope this Candice Patton reveal is true because I really dig her and this is a boss move. (But if it is, it’s also why I find it so impossible to decipher his TV blinds because his clues make no sense. The Flash *is* the most popular CW show, ratings-wise).

-Here’s Justin Timberlake‘s new album preview. Oh god, he’s gone full Bon Iver, guys!

-I actually don’t think Chrissy Teigen was trying to defend Logan Paul in her tweets this morning; I think she was trying to have a conversation about the knee-jerk internet campaigns designed to ruin people when they screw up. He is not the example I would have used because I personally think this guy’s career is an escalating waterfall of f**kery and should be ended, but I get what she was trying to say. (She’s since made her account private.)

Jessica Alba closed off the year by welcoming a new son.

Will Smith made a very gushy Instagram post on his and Jada‘s anniversary.

Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon did a fake Rose Bowl parade commentary and everyone was very confused.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reportedly flew to France in coach. Celebs, they’re just like us! I mean, they took up three rows in the back, were surrounded by bodyguards, and got to board before everyone else, but otherwise: totally like us.

-I’m pretty sure if someone called me the c-word on Twitter I would just ignore them or fight with them. But Sarah Silverman is clearly a way better person than I am and got to the bottom of her troll’s problems.

-So this is Dave Chappelle‘s take on Louis CK? In the words of @ira: keep it.

-More reviews of The X Files’ new season have come out, and then general consensus seems to be that if you can get past its bad season premiere, the rest of the episodes are solid and overall it’s way better than last year. I still can’t figure out why anyone thought it would be a good idea to start this week (when no one is expecting new episodes of anything) and then immediately take a week off?

-Meanwhile, Gillian Anderson has confirmed that this is it for her and The X Files.

-All of these deleted scenes from the final season of Parks & Rec sound awesome and I want to watch them right now.

-Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World, the super dark teen romance series based on the graphic novels. This has potential.

-The new Fifty Shades Freed trailer includes a car chase, a wedding, and a pregnancy reveal. I guess they can give everything away in the trailer because it’s not like the people who are going to see it are watching it for plot.
