Dwayne Johnson on Fame and Fans

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson talking about how one bad experience made him change how he deals with fans who approach him for selfies or autographs is really worth a listen. “It took all of 30 seconds for me to realize that I had an opportunity to make somebody feel good and I made them feel bad and what an a-hole that made me…Now they all get the same treatment and that treatment is gratitude. The alternative to that is I go back to having seven bucks in my pocket and nobody giving a sh-t to get my autograph or get my picture. On top of that, here’s the truth. Taking a picture, a selfie, or signing an autograph is literally one of the easiest parts of my job. I do a lot of things that are a lot harder.”

-The bloom continues to fall off the rose when it comes to Ellen Degeneres‘ public reputation. Variety posted a story last night about her show’s crew members (some of whom have been with her for 17 years) being outraged over their treatment during coronavirus. They received no communication about their hours or pay for over a month. She further angered them by bringing in non-union crew members to help with her current at-home taping of the show — which they learned about via social media. “Be kind” indeed.

-People are making fun of January Joneslatest Instagram video but I find this kind of unhinged entertainment delightful.

-Speaking of delightful celebrity quarantine content, Kathryn Hahn and her family did Glengarry Glen Ross with dolls.

-Last night’s Disney Family Singalong on ABC was surprisingly awesome. Ariana Grande harmonized with herself while singing “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” from Hercules, Beyonce made a surprise appearance to sing “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and the cast of High School Musical cast reunited to sing “We’re All In This Together.”

-For the first time in 50 years, San Diego Comic-Con has been cancelled. It’s the right thing to do. Plus, what will movie studios and TV shows have to promote?

-Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has cancelled all her 2020 appearances and concerts.

-Outlander star Sam Heughan sounds like he’s been dealing with a lot of fan harassment and is sick of it. I don’t watch the show so I don’t know much about that fandom, but I’ve certainly seen some people on Twitter get very, very invested in theories about him and his costar dating — and get very, very angry when she married someone else last year.

Fiona Apple released a new album today and the reviews are glowing. Even Pitchfork gave it a rare 10/10. (The title comes from a line Gillian Anderson says in The Fall, which the actress tweeted today.)

-Lucifer season 6 may be in jeopardy over a potential Tom Ellis contract dispute.

-Critics are really liking Mindy Kaling’s new Netflix show.

Martha Stewart is getting flak for telling Seth Meyers that she’s sheltering with her driver, housekeeper and gardener at her estate in the Bedford, N.Y., area and referring to them as her “detainees.” She added “They’re not sick of it yet but when I see the edges fraying, I’ll give them a day off.” Oof.

-Deep fakes are so, so weird but this re-imagined Parks & Rec intro with every character replaced by Ron is very clever.

Meghan Markle appeared on a video call to raise funds for the delivery of food to poor, elderly and vulnerable Londoners during the coronavirus epidemic.

-Speaking of Zoom calls, Seth Rogen showed Jimmy Kimmel how he likes to prank people in video meetings.

-In his new cover story for GQ, Kanye West says he’s a formerly “functioning alcoholic” and implies he’s still planning to vote for Trump.

Dua Lipa (who’s new album is fire) covers the new issue of Elle. She talks about self-isolating with boyfriend Anwar Hadid (Gigi and Bella’s brother) and how they’re binging shows. “Oh my God, I’ve watched so many shows—Ozark, Tiger King, The Night Of, The Outsider, Servant, did I say Ozark? And lots of movies, too.”

Shailene Woodley is also binging shows — for the first time ever. “I never really watch films or TV, which is so funny considering what I do for a living. I didn’t really grow up watching them, so it isn’t something that came into my adult life. I’ve been watching a movie a day and it feels really rewarding. I’ve been texting a different friend every day and asking for recommendations.”

-The fact that Ana de Armas is blocking fan accounts is so, so tone deaf and hilarious.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped off a week’s worth of perishable meals and three weeks’ worth of shelf-stable foods to 20 charity clients last week.

-Who knew that Britney Spears would be the shining star of social media during quarantine? Her latest is a passive aggressive shout-out to both Justin Timberlake and Tik Tokers.

-Oh no, Brian Dennehy has passed away.

-SNL’s Michael Che, who’s grandmother passed away recently, has pledged to the pay the rent of the residents in her building.

-Last night’s Survivor made me cry. Not only did they extend the loved ones’ visit to kids, they also gave it to the contestants on the Edge of Extinction. I’m not sure if they just knew that’s what the world needed to watch right now, but they’ve never opened an episode before with the family visits, and they’ve certainly never devoted so much time to them.

-Anyone else finding immense comfort these days in sweet Twitter threads? This one on the best TV first kisses blew up today.

-Speaking of sweet threads, this Gourmet Makes supercut of all the times Brad talks nonsense and Claire responds with “uh huh” made me so weirdly happy.

-Here’s the first trailer for the Saved By the Bell revival. I dunno about this one.

Anna Kendrick befriends a sex doll in the trailer for the new Quibi show, Dummy.

-Netflix released a trailer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s interactive special that is hitting the streamer next month.

-Netflix also released the first full trailer for the latest project from Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever, which looks great.

-The first trailer for Capone, starring Tom Hardy, is here. This is not the type of Tom Hardy the world needs right now. Remember how charming he was in the terrible This Means War? Let’s bring him back!

-In her new People cover storyJulia Louis-Dreyfus talks about how surviving breast cancer led her to ramp up her environmental activism. “Once you’ve faced a near-death experience like that, you do begin to realize that, at some point, you’re going to be out of here. We all are. So, how best to spend my remaining time on this planet?”

-Media-shy Cameron Diaz appeared on Who What Wear CEO Katherine Power‘s Instagram Live yesterday and talked about motherhood and being married to Benji Madden. “I love being a mother. Jennifer Lopez and Robert DeNiro surprised hospital staff with video messages of support.

Judi Dench‘s grandson continues to make hilarious TikTok videos with her and I love him.

Nicki Minaj dropped her husband’s name on her social media channels, but apparently it’s just because she’s getting ready to promote new music.
