Golden Globes 2019: Best and Worst Dressed

TV and film’s biggest stars pulled out all the stops at the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. Red lips, big sleeves and plunging necklines were the big themes of the red carpet. Nicole and I made our picks for the best and worst looks of the night below. (Spoiler alert: we both liked Kerry Washington’s boob necklace. Fight us.)

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2020 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Jen: I adore a good ladysuit and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge more than delivers in this sparkly Ralph & Russo. Love the cut, love the hair, love the attitude, love her.

Nicole: Although the structure of Beanie Feldstein’s Oscar de la Renta gown is simple, it’s flattering and I like the way the neckline frames her face and her simple yet elegant braided headband. The look is fun, youthful and perfect for a young nominee.

Jen: Ana de Armas‘ knives are out in this sparkling blue Ralph & Russo number. Bonus points for the pockets!

Nicole: Taylor Swift is wearing boho Italian brand Etro and the bold print is a standout on the red carpet. The tank-style top is casual and the cutout keeps the large structured gown from overwhelming her frame. The gown says ‘I know I’m just here for fun and definitely not to win for #Cats.’

Jen: When Zoey Deutch stepped onto the red carpet in this perfectly tailored canary Fendi jumpsuit, I gasped. The colour is perfect, the hair is excellent and the jewelry pulls the whole thing together. A stunner.

Nicole: Charlize Theron is wearing Dior as per usual but this look is carried by her overall styling with the black nails, the corset trend, the shoulder cape and a totally different green shade that we’ve not seen. Electric and edgy and matches her overall vibe. Max girl crush.

Jen: I was really hoping Saoirse Ronan would bring it, and she did not disappoint! This slinky, backless, sideboob-y Celine is a dream. She can, as the kids say, step on my neck.

Nicole: Kerry Washington in Altuzzara is a revelation. I love the slinky skirt which totally offsets the structured jacket under which she’s wearing… a necklace? God, I love this even though I have no idea what’s happening. Her styling is impeccable with a sleek bob and bright red lip. Edgy and elegant. [Jen: I also love this look but judging from the internet, we’re totally alone in this 🤣]

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2020 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Jen: I love when stars take a risk on the red carpet, but Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Fendi look is a LOT to process. My eyes don’t know where to focus first. The ab-baring bikini with the prairie dress cover up? The necklace buried underneath? The colour that matches her spray tan? The ass corset? It’s all too much!!

Nicole: Jennifer Lopez showed up with A Rod who looked more like her security detail than her fiancée. From the neck up, she’s gorgeous. Then it’s like a Christmas gift that I wrapped (i.e. – no amount of bows can make up for how awful it looks). Wrinkled and big and not what I would have expected from Maison Valentino or her. (Also shut the f*ck up during her interviews, ARod.)

Jen: I know the internet is in love with Baby Yoda, but there’s no need for cosplay, Jodie Comer. This is a wrinkled, shapeless disaster from Mary Katrantzou. Villanelle would never!

Nicole: Cate Blanchett is a VIBE but her Mary Katranzou dress is as messy as the film she’s nominated for (Where’d You Go Bernadette was better as a book!). She leans into the statement sleeve trend but the bodice and skirt throw this look off-kilter. New York Times’ IG caption said “wait for the back” but I guess that’s only because it’s just as bad from behind?

Jen: Dakota Fanning plays the part of a pouffy princess in Dior. I’m all for a bit of whimsy on the red carpet, but Kirsten Dunst did it better tonight in pale pink Rodarte.

Nicole: From the waist up, Scarlett Johansson up looks lovely. Predictable but lovely. So why on earth would Vera Wang feel the need to add a giant ass bow? Why does this continue to be a thing? Also can we just construct better gowns that don’t need figure skater material to hold them together? What happened to good old fashioned double-sided tape??

Johnny Depp Profile Goes Viral – For All The Wrong Reasons

Johnny Depp‘s shady lawyer arranged for a profile in Rolling Stone, and whatever sympathy they were trying to garner with this article — it totally backfired. (Variety just called it a “PR liability.”) Written by Stephen Rodrick and titled ‘The Trouble With Johnny Depp’, it does not paint a favourable picture of the fading star. You really should read the whole thing because it’s batcrap crazy, but the most eyebrow-raising parts are when he argues that his financial troubles were actually *under* reported (“It’s insulting to say that I spent $30,000 on wine. Because it was far more…By the way, it was not $3 million to shoot Hunter [S. Thompson] into the f***ing sky. It was $5 million”), Rodrick’s view of how the actor considers his legal woes (“Depp seems oblivious to any personal complicity in his current predicament. [Lawyer] Waldman seems to have convinced Depp that they are freedom fighters taking on the Hollywood machine rather than scavengers squabbling over the scraps of a fortune squandered”) and the article’s closing salvo (“‘Thanks for coming,’ says Depp. ‘This could be your Pulitzer.’ For the next 15 minutes, Depp tries to figure out how to open the gates to his mansion fortress. He clicks buttons and pushes the fence, but nothing budges. He is a lost boy who won’t find his way home before dark. I finally tell him I can shimmy over the fence. I clamber over and jump down. Through the bars we say good night.”)

Michael Schur says his favorite joke from this season of The Good Place is a Pirates Of The Caribbean diss. It is pretty perfect.

Pete Davidson officially confirmed his engagement to Ariana Grande on Jimmy Fallon’s show last night:  “Some people come up to me and say, Yo man, you give me hope. I didn’t know I was that ugly…I’m a lucky motherf***er.”

-I love that a bunch of TV writers rooms across all types of different networks have banded together to support an initiative to help families separated at the US border.

Demi Lovato dropped a surprise new single called Sober, in which she reveals that after six years of sobriety, she apparently relapsed.

-While Brad Pitt‘s camp is planting stories about how he’s being cheated out of custody rights, Angelina Jolie  is visiting Mosul a year after its liberation from ISIS, and talking about the world’s lack of action.

-This GQ first person essay by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz is really worth your time.  She talks about how she’s getting married to a man, but how that shouldn’t make her seem any less bi.

-Bless Zoey Deutch for not holding back her criticism when asked  on Watch What Happens Live what it was like to kiss James Franco.

-It’s good to see that Rian Johnson has a sense of humor about this kind of fandom bs.

Justin Theroux posed for the cover of Men’s Health and kept his shirt on so what was even the point?

-Speaking of covers, Janet Jackson looks amazing on the new issue of Essence. In the interview, she talks about going through an “intense” bout of depression in her 30s.

Seth Rogen is justifiably excited about the possibility of sharing a song credit with Beyonce on the upcoming Lion King soundtrack.

-MTV is rebooting Daria, Made, Aeon Flux and The Real World — and hopes to sell them to other networks/streaming services — as it launches MTV Studios. The studio push is an effort across all Viacom brands, which is why Nickelodeon just sold an animated kids show to Netflix.

-Wait, Ozark is actually getting a season 2?  That surprises me.

-This is an excellent look at Queer Eye’s latest iteration.

Jim Carrey sings a sad song for Michel Gondry in the Kidding teaser.

-Netflix is really out here bringing back the romcom, huh? They just released the trailer for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. It looks super cute and I devoured the book it was based on so I’m here for it.
