Angelina Jolie Breaks Instagram Records

-I wondered if Angelina Jolie‘s decision to join Instagram was tied to her Marvel contract, but sources say she was compelled to join and speak out about what’s happening in Afghanistan. In her first post, she shared a letter she was sent from a teenage Afghan girl.

-Another day, another adorable set of photos of Channing Tatum and Zoe Kravitz hanging out in NYC. Ok, now that it seems like they really are together I want to wrap them in bubblewrap and make everyone leave them alone.

Kylie Jenner is pregnant — she’s expecting her second child with Travis Scott.

-So, it happened. Mike Richards quit Jeopardy after his first day of taping following Ringer’s explosive report and rumblings that Sony was unimpressed. When I say he quit Jeopardy though, I only mean his new hosting gig. He’s still an executive producer. I can’t imagine what it must be like to work there now (or what the next host will deal with). According to the NYT, staff aired grievances at meeting on Thursday, while Ken Jennings and Buzzy Cohen were not allowed to watch the in-studio taping and were told that Richards was too nervous about their presence.

-Meanwhile, The Ringer’s Claire McNear talked about how her story came together, the response she received, and what she predicts comes next.

Ryan Reynolds tweeted his support for Levar Burton to take over hosting, bringing up the fan campaign that got him cast as Deadpool.

-The woman who was assaulted by Nicki Minaj’s husband is speaking out and taking new legal action after saying she’s experienced several months of alleged harassment, threats and intimidation from Minaj, her husband and their associates.

-There were some reports this week that Britney Spears had secretly married and divorced her then-fiancé and former agent Jason Trawick in 2012. The speculation surfaced when her conservatorship court filings included an expense of $9,150 for a lawyer “Consultation on Dissolution of Marriage,” but the most likely explanation is that it was a meeting about a prenup.

-Even though Johnny Depp lost his defamation suit in the UK, a Virginia judge has ruled that he can file a separate suit against Amber Heard in the US.

Lizzo says she stopped wearing deodorant. Celebrities, you continue to have the option to not tell us things! We would never know and everyone could just go on living their lives.

-There’s a bit of a backlash to Ted Lasso happening right now that I find both predictable and exhausting. I agree with both this take and this review — but I just want to keep liking it.

-I’ve never seen this clip of Will Smith talking about how he passed on playing Neo in The Matrix because the Wachowskis’ pitch was awful. “As it turns out, they’re geniuses. But there’s a fine line in a pitch meeting between genius and what I experienced in the meeting.”

Mindy Kaling says that a lot of what she writes about is informed by a “devastating” remark about her weight that a fellow writer said to her when she was 25 and on The Office.

-Shadow and Bone star Ben Barnes celebrated his 40th birthday by announcing a debut album.

-This is an interesting look at how TV’s shifts toward streaming and fewer episodes is making it harder for writers to train to become showrunners. In network TV days, writers would get to visits the sets and see how showrunners navigated the management side of things, but now most writers rooms are off the payroll before the show has finished production.

-I liked Sydney Sweeney in Euphoria but it wasn’t until The White Lotus that I realized what she could do. She stars in the trailer for the erotic thriller The Voyeurs, coming to Amazon Prime.

Scarlett Johansson Sues Disney

-This is HUGE: Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit today against Disney, claiming that the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+ while also releasing it in theaters breached her contract and could cost her tens of millions of dollars. Her salary was largely based on the theatrical box office receipts and she gets bonuses whenever the tally reaches certain milestones. Estimates suggest she lost out on $50M in bonuses when Disney pushed it to streaming and refused to renegotiate.

-Disney fired back, saying that she has so far received $20M from the project and her lawsuit shows a “callous disregard” to the pandemic. Please. At this point when almost all theatres have reopened, its simultaneous debut on streaming had less to do about safety and more about adding Disney+ subscribers. She’s missing out on bonuses her male counterpoints have reaped because the distribution strategies have shifted while their compensation structures haven’t changed. It’s not just about a millionaire complaining; it’s about the old way of doing things being dead. Netflix already pays out talent up front, and after announcing their simultaneous streaming debuts, Warner Bros went back and amended contracts to pay actors more up front since the potential box office take was reduced.

-The Hawkeye series at Disney+, starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, will debut on November 24. I became way more interested in this show once I realized that’s where Florence Pugh‘s Black Widow character is heading next.

-Broadway is the latest to require all workers to be vaccinated.

-Manifest is in top spot on the streaming chart for the third straight week, even though its future remains in limbo.

-With all the love that James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad is getting from critics (it’s 97% fresh!), David Ayers made a post about his Suicide Squad: “The studio cut is not my movie… A handful of people have seen it. If someone says they have seen it, they haven’t.”

-The first posters for the House of Gucci trailer by Ridley Scott have arrived. Lady Gaga looks amazing; Jared Leto is ridiculous.

-It leads in nicely to this piece on Hollywood’s enduring love of fat suits.

Camila Cabello posted a video about waiting to fart until Shawn Mendes left the house. Ok then.

-Netflix renewed Sweet Tooth (a show I really liked but haven’t gotten around to ep 3 yet) for season 2.

Candace Cameron Bure has apologized for dancing sexily with a Bible in a TikTok clip, saying “So many of you thought I was trying to be seductive, which clearly means I’m not a very good actress because I was trying to be strong, not sexy. So I guess that didn’t work, but I deleted it.”

DaBaby just can’t seem to help himself.

Jason Sudeikis talked about how Foo Fighters song “My Hero” influenced Ted Lasso season 2.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s daughter is named Delta, which isn’t working out so well for her at this particular moment of humanity.

Jennifer Garner inked a partnership with Netflix that will see the actress star in and produce movies, including a sequel to Yes Day.

Joshua Jackson revealed that he bought his childhood home, and his daughter now sleeps in his old bedroom. “There was a mural of a dragon on the wall in that room that I couldn’t believe was still there, years later. The owner [who sold him the house] said, ‘I knew it meant a lot to somebody and that they were going to come back for it some day.'”

-Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall are leaving the show in 2022.

Angelina Jolie earned a victory in her lengthy court battle against Brad Pitt over custody of their children, but it could lead to their current custody arrangement being overturned, with the proceedings starting over again.

-I love that Vulture has brought back the report card-style reviews for Gossip Girl. Ah, memories!

Oscar Isaac is haunted by his past in the trailer for The Card Counter, co-starring Tiffany Haddish.

Will Smith plays Richard Williams, the father of legendary tennis siblings, Venus and Serena Williams, in the new trailer for the Oscar-baity King Richard.

Angelina Jolie Invites Us Into Her Home

Angelina-Jolie-British-Vogue

Angelina Jolie covers the March issue Of British Vogue, and the interview is a good mix of hints about her split from Brad Pitt (“The past few years have been pretty hard. I’ve been focusing on healing our family. It’s slowly coming back, like the ice melting and the blood returning to my body”), passion about her activism (“I see a lot of older people making excuses for certain behaviours, and it tends to be the younger person who is quicker to say, ‘But this is simply wrong, and we stand against it'”) and cute anecdotes about her kids (“I feel that I’m gonna hit my stride in my fifties. Though we were on the trampoline the other day, and the children said, ‘No, Mom, don’t do that. You’ll hurt yourself.’ And I thought, ‘God, isn’t that funny?’ There was a day I was an action star”). The family photos are just as fascinating as the quotes — I love the one where she’s giving Maddox a haircut.

-Uh oh. A former costar of Adam Driver went on a Portuguese podcast and accused him of “behaving very badly” on the set of 2018’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. According to translations, she said “he demanded, I think by contract, that no one could look at him. If they looked, the extras were immediately fired.” She also said he got too rough with her during filming: “He behaved very badly with me. Physically. He attacked me… And it had nothing to do with the scene.”

Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson will announce the major Golden Globes categories live on TV tomorrow morning. Weirdly, Best Comedy Movie won’t make the cut.

-Starz announced today that it will remove Marilyn Manson from his upcoming appearance in its drama series American Gods.

Dolly Parton turned down an offer to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice during the Donald Trump administration — possibly because she had scheduling conflicts but I prefer to believe she’s just that good.

-Although she helped fund the vaccine research, she still hasn’t gotten the shot. “I’m not going to get mine until some more people get theirs. I don’t want it to look like I’m jumping the line just because I donated money.”

-I’ve been really enjoying the Too Long; Didn’t Watch podcast, in which a celeb watches the first and last episode of a series they’d never seen before and tries to figure out what they missed. Jon Hamm watched Gossip Girl, Alison Brie watched Game of Thrones, Kumail Nanjiani watched Veronica Mars, and this week Sophia Bush watches Parks and Rec.

Mariah Carey‘s family continues to be garbage. Her sister is suing her for $1.25 million, alleging infliction of emotional distress.

-The palace is refusing to take the blame for the birth certificate fiasco.

-Stars like Charli XCX and Rihanna are mourning the death of producer Sophie.

-Also, Rihanna is shining light on India’s farmers protests.

-This article on stressed-out COVID compliance officers and assistants who work on TV shows is terrifying. “I have no formal training. I have no medical training. I don’t know anything more or less about coronavirus than the next person.”

-I really liked this piece on Hannah Waddingham’s arc on Ted Lasso. It’s so rare to see such a fully realized character in a comedy, especially a woman over 40.

Ariana Grande is releasing a deluxe album — and it’s got 4 different versions of “Positions.”

-Here’s the trailer for The Nevers, HBO’s Victorian sci-fi drama that Joss Whedon created — and then left. I must say I’m intrigued by this first look.

Will Smith is featured in the trailer for Amend: The Fight for America, which also features Mahershala Ali, Diane Lane, Samuel L. Jackson, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sterling K Brown, Joshua Jackson, Yara Shahidi, Laverne Cox and more. It drops on Netflix next weekend.

Amy Poehler directs and co-stars in Moxie, playing a woman who inspires her teen daughter to start a rabble-rousing zine. It’s coming to Netflix next month.
