Justin Timberlake Does Post-Super Bowl Damage Control

Justin Timberlake‘s Super Bowl performance was not good. The sound mixing was way off, his outfit was widely ridiculed, and his use of Prince (with whom he had a complicated history) did NOT go over well.  In his post-game appearance on The Tonight Show, he leaned on Questlove for validation.

Kylie Jenner didn’t talk at all about her pregnancy (not even to confirm it) and then this weekend she announced she’d given birth on Feb 1 with this insanely well-edited, oddly moving 11-minute video chronicling her pregnancy.

-In a harrowing new interview (which I wish was written by someone other than Maureen Dowd but alas) Uma Thurman broke her silence about the time Harvey Weinstein attacked her. Equally horrific was her details about a car crash on the set of Kill Bill (complete with video footage) and the subsequent attempt to cover it up. Quentin Tarantino does NOT come off well in the story, but Thurman later took to Instagram to praise him, saying he was “deeply regretful and remains remorseful about this sorry event, and gave me the footage years later so I could expose it and let it see the light of day…He also did so with full knowledge it could cause him personal harm, and I am proud of him for doing the right thing and for his courage.”

-Meanwhile, a new statement from Weinstein’s attorney says Thurman’s sexual-assault accusations “are being carefully examined and investigated before deciding whether any legal action against her would be appropriate.” Jesus.

-The Thurman story got all the coverage this weekend, but equally disturbing and important was the story from the Washington Post about nine women accusing veteran talent manager Vincent Cirrincione, who guided the careers of many women of colour, of sexual misconduct. Halle Berry, his most famous client, says she cut ties with him three years ago when she first heard of the allegations, telling the Post “I immediately confronted Vince about it, and he denied it completely. But even with his denial, something didn’t feel right in my spirit, and with the possibility that it could be true, I immediately ended our over-25-year relationship…While Vince never made an inappropriate gesture toward me, nor did I hear about this type of behavior from any woman or man while we worked together, I have always had a no-tolerance policy when it came to such matters.”

-Meanwhile, Cirrincione’s company, whose current clients include Empire’s Jussie Smollett and The Flash’s Candice Patton, was immediately shuttered.

Sarah Silverman announced on Twitter than she and Michael Sheenconsciously uncoupled over Christmas” because “we live in different countries & it got hard.” Too bad; I liked them a lot together.

Taylor Kitsch told Seth Meyers that FNL fans approach him a lot because “they want to get drunk with Tim Riggins.” Fair.

Cardi B denounced pregnancy rumours with my favourite statement ever: “I’m just getting fat. Let me fat in peace.”

-R.I.P. John Mahoney. The actor best known from Frasier and Say Anything has died at 77. (“I’m incarcerated, Lloyd!!” remains one of my favourite line readings ever.)

-Awkward: Xavier Dolans cut his BFF Jessica Chastain out of his new movie.

-My least favourite part of This Is Us is how obsessed they have always been about Jack’s death and last night’s episode didn’t change that, but my god, give Mandy Moore an Emmy for this scene.

Ben Platt, Barbra Streisand, and Gwyneth Paltrow are set to star in Ryan Murphy‘s upcoming Netflix series The Politician.

Kevin Hart says his wife tried to stop him from posting this drunk Super Bowl video on Instagram, but he went ahead and did it anyway.

-Netflix had a Super Bowl shock up its sleeve: a surprise trailer for the next film in the Cloverfield series, followed by the unannounced premiere of the movie on the streaming service right after the game. In retrospect, the surprise drop strategy makes a lot of sense when you see how bad the reviews for it are. It’s at a dismal 16% on Rotten Tomatoes.

-I don’t care about football, but it’s clear that Stranger Things star David Harbour was the real Super Bowl winner.

-The Super Bowl dropped a lot of new movie trailers, including Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Jennifer Lawrence‘s Red Sparrow, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt‘s A Quiet Place, The Rock’s Skyscraper, and Mission Impossible: Fallout (which was weirdly my favourite).

-The biggest trailer was of course the teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story (which had people freaking out at our first glimpse of Donald Glover‘s Lando). The full trailer came today, which is more about Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo and Emilia Clarke‘s Qi’Ra. Needs more Lando.

-Holy moly, Uma Thurman‘s Thanksgiving message is intense! “Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! (Except you Harvey, and all your wicked conspirators – I’m glad it’s going slowly – you don’t deserve a bullet) -stay tuned”. She also just dumped her agency. It’s coming, y’all!

Beyonce announced that she’s launching holiday merch and it’s a true Thanksgiving miracle!

Jimmy Fallon covered Prince during the Macy’s parade and Twitter was not kind.

-I’m really down with this trend of rappers interrupting their concerts to protect women or give them inspirational speeches. Check out this pep talk by Jay-Z to a 9-year-old fan.

-Speaking of Jay-Z, Mariah Carey will reportedly be managed by his Roc Nation.

-Are we getting a royal engagement announcement soon? Like, really, really soon??

-Netflix is getting flak for moving quickly to remove Kevin Spacey, but dragging their feet on Danny Masterson, who has been accused of rape by four women. Not helping matters, the actor’s longtime publicist told an alleged victim that a woman cannot be raped by a man she’s dating.

Ryan Phillippe is suing model Elsie Hewitt over allegations he physically assaulted her.

Kate Beckinsale is reportedly “hanging out again” with the 22-year-old. Get it, girl.

Denzel Washington is very confused by the news that Drake has a tattoo of his face.

-SNL’s Colin Jost helped Scarlett Johansson ring in her 33rd birthday.

More women are coming forward to accuse Jeremy Piven of sexual harassment.

-I really, really want to believe Reese Witherspoon when she says: “I’m determined to create more opportunity for other women and people of color. To help them tell their stories. To encourage CEOs to take chances on high-level female executives and champion new female voices on film.”

-Here’s the trailer for NBC’s new drama, Rise. I’m cautiously hopeful about this one. Jason Katims rarely makes a misstep.

Taylor Swift Butts Heads with ACLU

-Whoo. This story about Taylor Swift denouncing white supremacy in a letter that she demanded wouldn’t be published on copyright grounds sure is…something. Why is she flexing her legal muscle against some random blogger? Why won’t she just publicly say that she’s not down with white supremacists? I’m so confused.

George Clooney is refreshingly honest when asked why he doesn’t act much anymore: “Acting used to be how I paid the rent, but I sold a tequila company for a billion f**king dollars. I don’t need money.”

Meghan Markle is moving to London. It’s all happening, people!

Will and Jada Smith gave Tyrese $5 million to ‘stay off the internet’ – which he promptly revealed on the internet.

-In a new interview with Howard Stern, Kelly Clarkson recalls a time when Avril Lavigne elbowed her at the VMAs when Clarkson was presenting Lavigne with an award. “She did it, but I don’t know if she felt bad about it, or, like, she didn’t mean to do it or what. But it felt purposeful.”

Tom Hanks helped a man pull off a surprise wedding proposal at the Texas Book Festival.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas engagement party was apparently “star-studded” except I don’t actually know any of these people. Well, except this guy.

Mariah Carey and her longtime manager have parted ways. Hmmm…there is a story there — and possibly a Brett Ratner connection.

-Is it weird that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are having date nights at Morton’s? That strikes me as place for rich old white dudes.

Kevin Spacey‘s agent and publicist has dropped him and Netflix says that if they go forward with House of Cards, it will be without him (though no one seems to be expecting it to finish out its final season).

-Also, people who worked on House Of Cards told Buzzfeed that Spacey‘s alleged behavior was common knowledge.

-Meanwhile, Spacey has entered the sex addiction rehab program at The Meadows clinic in Arizona. But is the counseling for sex addiction the same as counseling for assaulters?

-Check out this clip of Uma Thurman. When she ends up telling her story, she’s going to burn Hollywood down!

Julianna Margulies told a story about a horrific hotel room meeting she once had with Steven Seagal, saying “He was alone and he made sure that I saw his gun… I don’t know how I got out of that hotel room.”

Ben Affleck has updated his position on the scandal, saying he’ll donate Miramax residuals to charity and that he’s “looking at my own behavior and addressing that and making sure I’m part of the solution.” Too little, too late?

Alec Baldwin claims that Rose McGowan ‘delayed justice‘ by settling. Nice allyship, asshole.

-And just like clockwork, the backlash to all the sexual assault stories has begun, starting this this bullshit Hollywood Reporter story about a “witch hunt.” The idea that the LA Times and NYT and their lawyers didn’t fully vet all published allegations first is ridiculous. This is a much better take on how the mood in Hollywood has changed. So is this. And this.

-Queen Elizabeth II grapples with scandal after scandal in the trailer for The Crown’s second season.

Wentworth Miller is leaving the CW. I’m not surprised. After signing a contract that was supposed to span all of their superhero shows, he’s barely appeared in any of them.

Jimmy Fallon’s tapings have been canceled this week, following the passing of his mother Gloria.

-If you’re wondering why there may be less reviews of the new Star Wars movie than usual, it’s because journalists are boycotting Disney films, pledging solidarity with LA Times until Disney drops a ban on its access.

-Meanwhile, a report surfaced today that 20th Century Fox is in talks to sell most of the company to Disney. It sounds like the deal won’t go through, but the fact that one of the oldest studios may be giving up on movies is sure to shake Hollywood.

-I love that Crazy Rich Asians landed a EW cover!

-I was shocked when I read that Izzie would be returning to Grey’s Anatomy for the show’s 300th episode — and then I realized it would just be her “spirit.” No way Katherine Heigl is getting back on that set.

-That Stranger Things kid doesn’t owe anyone anything. Leave him alone.

-As expected, Thor: Ragnarok killed it at the box office this weekend, giving Marvel their 17th straight number one opening.

-This profile on SNL’s Aidy Bryant is wonderful.

-The Fifty Shades Freed final trailer shows Ana and Christian‘s honeymoon. Wait, she MARRIES that psycho? Oh girl, no.
